Seguin ISD holds off on welcoming homeschool students to its campuses

(Seguin) -- Folks will have to wait and see whether the Seguin ISD will allow homeschool students the opportunity to participate in its UIL activities.
The motion to table the decision was made Tuesday night by Trustee\ Denise Crettenden.
After district officials reviewed the measures as outlined in the House Bill Crettenden felt that more homework was necessary to justify a decision one way or another.

Seguin High School Senior Diego Hernandez is inviting the community to learn more about his “Save Money, Save the Environment” campaign. According to Hernandez, the special Saturday afternoon presentation at the Seguin Public Library is to “mainly bring awareness and to teach people how we can live a better future and how we can be an advocate for that better future.”

Following a few seconds of silence among the other trustees, Crettenden opted to table the item instead of agreeing to the district’s recommendation not to allow non-enrolled students to participate in UIL activities at this time.
As reported by KWED, interest from some parents prompted the agenda item. The interest was in response to recent legislation spelled out in House Bill 547 that now allows homeschooled children to participate in UIL activities. The House bill, however, can only be implemented if approved by each respective school district.
“I looked up some other school districts who have started to allow home school students to participate. I saw that their perimeters were very robust. They knew exactly – they had picked the Stanford Achievement Test. They had chosen was sports and activities. They just had a lot of information. They had designated who was looking at eligibility, who was bringing in that test. There were just a lot of specifics that I don’t think we had, and I would want to hear about what activities people may want to participate in and things like that and craft a local policy before we just pass a blanket policy,” said Crettenden.

SHS student council chair takes action for local environmental
(Seguin) – While most kids are resting and having fun this summer, one local Seguin High School student is busy leading an environmental campaign. With a public presentation set for this Saturday at the public library, SHS Senior Diego Hernandez hopes to share more about his chosen campaign, “Save Money, Save the Environment.”
Hernandez’s effort is under the umbrella of Student PIRGs (Public Interest Research Group), a national non-profit designed to unite students with the hopes of creating a “greener, healthier, more meaningful future.”
With many sister affiliates across the country, Hernandez says he has picked up one of the group’s activist toolkits with the desire to bring on change beginning here in his community.
“Student PIRGs has multiple campaigns where students like me can get out in the community, become an advocate, try to make a change. I chose to campaign for ‘Save Money, Save the Environment.’ I am currently reading to further my research into the environment, ‘Not the End of the World.’ I actually got it here at
Pecantown here in Seguin by Hannah Ritchie. It’s really eye-opening to everything because my campaign, it seeks out signatures and petitions to keep funding for the IRA and basically, what that means is if we keep funding for the IRA, we will have money so America can have an easier transition into a greener lifestyle by providing tax reductions. It also gives us funding to create those green energy facilities like solar plantations and wind plantations especially if we want to reach our carbon net of zero
in the Continental United States by 2050,” said Hernandez.
Carbon net zero, also known as net zero emissions, is a “state where the amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere by human activities is balanced by the amount removed over a specific period.”
Now, instead of just dreaming of this healthier world, Hernandez is taking action to engage and educate folks in smaller communities like Seguin. Environment, pg. 3

Not only is he the chair of the energy environment committee for Seguin High School’s Student Council, but Hernandez has already spent much of his personal time with the public leading community efforts such as trash cleanups along Walnut Trail.
Hernandez’s latest effort in his environmental campaign will be an informational meeting this Saturday in the Seguin Public Library. Hernandez says the event is simply an opportunity for folks to learn more about how they can improve things.
“Like I said, this book that I’m reading is really eye opening. It’s telling us that it’s not the end of the world. We are actually on good standards right now but what we need to do is
keep that track going and by keeping this funding. We can stay on that track to provide a better future. I would love to see more people care about the environment. It is definitely something that is lacking in smaller communities. My organization is non-partisan, so it’s not politically affiliated with anybody.
It’s mainly to bring awareness and to teach people how we can live a better future and how we can be an advocate for that better future,” said Hernandez. Hernandez’s presentation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday in the library’s conference room. The library is located at 313 W. Nolte St.

Also agreeing to the decision to table the item was Trustee Linda Duncan. Duncan indicated wanting to hear even more from those parents who have chosen to homeschool.
“I also would like to hear the rationale between yes, we’d like our student, our child, to participate in UIL activities but not participate in your educational opportunities. I’d like to see what the difference is between those two things,” said Duncan.
Before discussing the issue, trustees heard from a pair of homeschool parents. The first was Jackie Biesenbach. The mother of two stated that when looking at the community as a whole, the city of Seguin’s homeschooled children, they are still students of Seguin. She says they live here, work here, run small businesses here, and give back to the community.
Following the board’s decision to table the item, Biesenbach said she is at least appreciative that her reasoning was considered.
“It’s a win so far. I mean, they didn’t say no. I know they were kind of hesitant to even make any kind of motion. But I think that if they were able to speak to the home school parents on our reasoning behind this, they might be able to change their minds,” said Biesenbach.

Forrest Fletcher. Fletcher says while he understands that there might be concerns about resources and fairness, he believes these challenges can be managed effectively.
“It’s a good sign that they are wanting to do the due diligence. I think that’s a big, big indicator. I think rather than paint this picture that we are going to have 100 students come and bombard our school district, I think I see some interest and opportunity. I think that I understand that this will require a lot of change. It’s going to acquire some accommodations and stuff but at the same time, I think it’s a positive outcome for the community. In my case, my daughter is special needs. She does not flourish in a school setting, but she does flourish in a single setting where it’s parent and student. However, she is very outgoing and wants to participate in events and she wants to participate in sports, and I don’t know that they are quite considering special circumstances. I think they are looking at this as a whole and not looking at it on a case-by-case basis and I think that if they did investigate it to that point that they’d find that there is a need and a niche for this,” said Fletcher.
According to Biesenbach, she has reached out to districts who have already approved the House Bill. Currently, 35 out of the state’s 1,20 school districts have made the local decision to allow home school students in their programs. District officials hope to have the item back on the agenda for an official decision as soon as possible.

Bulldogs Earn ABCA Academic Excellence Award
SEGUIN, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran baseball team was one of 800 member college and high school programs from across the country to receive the 2023-24 Team Academic Excellence Award from the American Baseball Coaches Association(ABCA), the association announced Wednesday.
Texas Lutheran was one of two SCAC schools (Schreiner) to be recognized with the award.
The Bulldogs had 12 players earn SCAC Spring Academic Honor Roll this spring.
Teams from every level of college and high school baseball were honored with this year’s award, which highlights programs coached by ABCA members that posted a GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale for the cumulative 2023-24 academic year.
The American Baseball Coaches Association has a long tradition of recognizing the achievements of baseball coaches and student-athletes. The ABCA/Rawlings All-America Teams are the nation’s oldest, founded in 1949, and the ABCA’s awards program also includes the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Awards, the ABCA/ATEC Regional & National Coaches of the Year and several other major awards such as the ABCA Hall of Fame
and the Dave Keilitz Ethics in Coaching Award.

Fruehling
Gladys Evelyn Kuhn Fruehling, age 102, of Seguin passed away on July 11, 2024. She was born on October 31, 1921, to Emma Orts Kuhn and Albert John Kuhn in the home of her grandmother Orts in Paige, Texas.
She was baptized in the same house on April 23rd, 1922. Rev. Gerhard Poehlman confirmed her on July 13th, 1936 in St. John’s Lutheran Church in Paige, Texas.
She attended a four-room school in Paige through the 10th grade. For her last year of school (11th grade), she commuted to Giddings daily by a commercial bus. She also worked, as needed, at the General Store in Paige that was run by her family.
After graduating from High School in 1939, she made the decision to become the first in her family to attend college. She went to Texas Lutheran College for two years. To further her education, she taught for two years in country schools and attended The University of Texas in the summers.
She graduated from UT on Feb. 6th ,1945 and moved to Iowa where she worked as a Social worker for Lutheran Social Services. While there, she met a charming young pastor. She married H. Walter Fruehling on Dec. 5th, 1945 in his father’s church in Nemaha County, Nebraska. His father, William R. Fruehling officiated.
Together, Walt and Gladys, served congregations in Windsor, Colorado; Marion, Texas; Overland Park, Kansas and Beatrice, Nebraska. Gladys met the challenges of a pastor’s wife and was a great support to Walt. She was active with her church family wherever she was. Her faith was the most important part of her life. She spent time studying the Bible and praying every day. She died secure in Jesus’ arms.
She was preceded in death by Walt after 76 years of marriage. They were in love until the end. She is survived by their four children; Mary (Raymond) Grote; Mike (Mary Lou) Fruehling; Sam (Anne Bogaev) Fruehling; Becky (Susano) Galvan; 9 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family members and friends.
Private interment will be held at a later date.

Allan Gregg Krueger, age 90 of Marion, passed away on July 9, 2024. Allan was born on April 21, 1934 in Guadalupe County, Texas one of thirteen children, to Milton and Hilda (Laechelin) Krueger.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his daughter-in-law, Cynthia Krueger and several brothers and sisters.
Survivors include his loving wife of 71 years, Ruby (Hoffman) Krueger; sons, Larry Krueger and wife Debra (Hunt), and Kenneth Krueger; daughter, Jannice (Krueger) Doege; grandchildren, Robyn Doege, Amber (Doege) Crawford and husband Dustin, Russell Krueger and wife Cheryl (Doell), Heather Krueger and husband Michael Bolanos, and Baylee Krueger; great-grandchildren, Aidan Krueger, Cole Crawford, and Waylon Krueger; several siblings, numerous nieces and nephews, other loving family members and friends.

Deharde
Mary Rose Velek Deharde, age 92 of Seguin, passed away on July 17, 2024. Mary was born on January 31, 1932 in Shiner, Texas, to Mary (Tousek) and Jerry Velek. Mary grew up in Shiner and worked in Yoakum at the leather factory known as Textan. In 1976 the Deharde family moved to Seguin where Tony and Mary purchased and operated a previously owned water well service. Mary worked at Deharde Water Well Service up until she was 90 years old, now owned and operated by her sons Larry and Gary.
Mary was an active member of St. James Catholic Church in Seguin as well as Catholic Daughters of the Americas. Other memberships she enjoyed were in the American Legion H U Wood Post 245 and the American Legion Auxiliary Post 245 here in Seguin.
She enjoyed sewing and cooking especially for family and friends. Hosting large family gatherings at Thanksgiving and Christmas were always a favorite and made for many great times and memories.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her previous husband Daniel Barcak, her husband Anton (Tony) Deharde Sr., brother Jerry Velek, and sons-in-law Robert Owen and Perry Lynn Bell Jr.
Fidel H. Aguilar, age 85 of Seguin, passed away on July 22, 2024. Fidel was born on April 24, 1939 in Seguin, Texas to Teresa (Herrera) and Santos Aguilar.
Fidel is preceded in death by his daughter, Diane Aguilar, his parents, and his siblings, Juana Rodriguez and Maria Rosales.

Cleburn Henry Roecker died on Saturday, July 20, 2024 at the age of 89 years.
He was born on August 28, 1934, in Belmont, Texas to Henry and Meta (Giesick) Roecker. He is preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Charlene Roecker Green, and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Bertha and Alfred Mattke, sisters-in-law, Rosalie Mattke, and Evelyn Friedeck and husband Helmuth, brothers-in-law, Leroy Mattke and wife Irene, James Cheatham, Charlie Mollenhauer, and Anthony (Tony) Baer.
Survivors include his loving wife of 69 years, Gladys (Mattke) Roecker; daughter, Karen Lynn Roecker Hartmann of Tomball, Tx.; Randall William Roecker (Annette) of Belmont; grandchildren, Michelle (Roecker) Barbee (Benjamin), Dustin Green, Dina Green Nall, Kaitlyn Hartmann, Travis Hawkins (Chelsea), and Wendy Hawkins Frazier (Tim); great-grandchildren, Sterling, Kailey and Grant Barbee. He attended and was very proud to have been in the last graduating class of the historical Dowdy High School. He furthered his education by attending Durham Business College in San Antonio.
He spent his entire adult life in the tractor business. He had a real appreciation for tractors and the differences they made in farming and ranching, which may have started when his father took him, as a child, to Gonzales to see one of the first tractors built, or later when his father purchased his first iron wheel tractor.
Cleburn first worked for Ewald Tractor Company as their accountant, but he learned so much more selling and ordering parts, as well as, selling tractors and equipment, customer service and equipment appraisals. Later he purchased T&E Tractor Company. He built his own building on Kingsbury Street where he became the Massey Ferguson dealer in Seguin for many years. After selling the dealership, he had a tractor repair and sales business, Seguin Tractor Sales and Rentals, until he retired for health reasons at the age of 80.
In his early years he enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards and dominos, and cooking. He was very active in the community; he coached

Esther Rodriguez Souvenir died July 18th,2024 at the age of 40. little league and was overjoyed when their team became city champions for 2 years and the entire team went to the Astrodome each year in Houston for an Astro’s Game.
He was always willing to help with the Vocational Tractor Mechanics program, when it was taught at Seguin High School, donating many tractors and parts. He hired many of the young students who completed that course. He spent many years on the Vocational Education Board at the High School.
He was on the Guadalupe County Fair and Rodeo Board for many years, where he earned a lifetime membership. On his years with the Fair Board, he also helped put together the first tractor pull in Seguin.
He was a charter member of the rural water company and later served on their Board. He was also a supporter of the local Youth Show. He received Agri-Business Award from the Seguin Chamber of Commerce.
He and Gladys loved to talk about their Family Tree. They collected old family photos and attended many family reunions. If you ever attended a local wedding, you probably saw Cleburn and Gladys leading The Grand March at the wedding celebration or waltzing across Texas and dancing the Beer Barrel Polka. He was quite the dancer. He loved to travel whenever he could. He would go to many areas including, Mexico City, Beaumont, Houston, Eagle Pass, Colorado, Florida and Louisiana, but most of all, loved visiting with family and friends. He always loved to help cook for holidays and get-togethers!
After retirement he enjoyed watching the news and football on TV, checking his cattle and other animals on his farm south of Seguin, and he was always ready to give advice and share thoughts. We always enjoyed listening to his stories about his childhood and early adulthood. He always tried to take care of his family and put their needs before his own.
Viewing and visitation will be on Thursday, July 25, 2024 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm at Tres Hewell Mortuary with services to follow on Friday, July 26, 2024 at 10:00 am at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel with the Reverend Marcus Bigott officiating. Interment will follow at Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park.

Iowa Abortion Law Takes Effect Next Week
(Des Moines, IA) -- Iowa’s law that bans abortions at around six weeks is set to take effect this coming Monday. A judge gave the order on Tuesday to dissolve the temporary injunction after the state’s Supreme Court denied a rehearing request by Planned Parenthood and the ALCU of Iowa. The law, signed by Governor Kim Reynolds last year, will ban abortions after embryonic cardiac activity is detected. Planned Parenthood estimates that up to 98-percent of abortions currently performed in Iowa will be banned under the law.
NY Gov Gets Feedback On Mental health For School Phone Ban
(Windsor, NY) -- New York Governor Kathy Hochul is getting feedback from parents and officials as she explores a proposal to ban cell phones in schools statewide. She took part in a youth mental health roundtable discussion today on the matter in Broome County as part of her statewide listening tour. Hochul points out that 72 percent of teachers say cell phones have become a major problem in their classroom. Hochul thinks cell phones are a driver of mental challenges young people face.
UNAIDS Pushing To End AIDS Pandemic By 2030
(Geneva) -- UNAIDS is setting the bar for world leaders to make a push to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. This, as AIDS 2024, the 25th International AIDS Conference is currently underway in Munich, Germany. Despite major progress in life-saving AIDS medication, UNAIDS says one in four infected people still have no access to treatment. The organization believes world leaders can uphold and achieve their promise of the 2030 goal by funding initiatives and protecting human rights.
Rodent To Human Virus Warning In Arizona
(Scottsdale, AZ) -- There’s a warning in Arizona about a dangerous virus spread from rodents to humans. Health officials say hantavirus is causing an increase in a potentially fatal lung syndrome. There’s been three deaths in the past few months in Arizona. Experts say the rare respiratory infection is transmitted through different types of rodents and causes anything from a mild disease to fatal one.
