SHS athlete critically injured in accident

(Seguin) – A Seguin High School athlete is fighting for her life today after being seriously injured in a car crash Wednesday afternoon in San Marcos. According to San Marcos Police, the accident occurred just before 5 p.m. on State Highway 123 near Lovelady Lane.

The initial investigation indicates that a minor collision left a Ford fourdoor passenger vehicle disabled in the roadway.

After the minor collision, officers say the driver of the Ford got out of the vehicle while the driver of the other vehicle was able to pull off the roadway.

However, the passenger of the Ford, also the SHS student identified as Chloe Belicek, remained sitting in the front seat while the vehicle sat disabled in the roadway.

That’s when officers say a second collision occurred when a Dodge pickup truck collided into the back end of the Ford injuring Belicek.Belicek was transported to Ascension Seton Hays with life-threatening injuries. The driver and sole occupant of the Dodge was also transported to Ascension Seton Hays

with non-life-threatening injuries.

Since the news of the accident, the Seguin community has been rallying to support Belicek, her family, and the entire Matador family. Uplifting postings continue to flood social media pages as Belicek remains in critical condition.

To further show support, the public is invited to join Matador Nation for a morning of prayer with Pastor Chris Larson. The gathering will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Matador Stadium.

San Marcos Police say the crash remains under investigation. They say it’s also not clear whether any charges may be filed at this time.

Miss South Texas Junior Teen seeks national title

Crown holder from Seguin to represent all of South Texas

(Seguin) -- At the start of summer, 16-year-old Casey Hernandez was just beginning her journey into the pageant world. Now mid summer, the Seguin High School student officially holds the title as the Miss South Texas, Junior Teen for the America’s National Teenager Scholarship Organization (ANTSO). Her journey, however, does not stop there and she is now preparing to compete for the national crown this weekend in Dallas.

Hernandez, who will represent Seguin and all of South Texas, says she never imagined so much experience in a very short time.

“I think it was a lot to take in at first being crowned Miss South Texas but at the end, I just thought this was a really great opportunity to showcase my community, my talents and also I have younger nieces and so it also helps them get out of their little shell and be a role model for them. It was a lot to take in at first

New Seguin

but I got adjusted to it pretty easily,” said Hernandez.

Prior to her daughter asking her to join the pageant circuit, Mother Penny Bright says the teen was shy and lacked a bit of ambition. But after the short couple of months of experience, she says all that has now changed.

“Oh my goodness, she has really just come out of her shell. She has taken on this. She is excited about it. She wanted to do the additional

optionals which they have different things they can do. They can do acting, or talent or portfolio -different things that they can choose from. The first pageant, we were nervous and we were not quite sure what we were doing so we couldn’t do a whole lot and this one, she is ready to take it all on. She is excited because now she gets to compete with girls from all over the country. And since this has all happened, she’s really come out of her shell that she has actually talked to a recruiter and she is planning on joining the National Guard when she is 17 and doing her basic next summer. So, she’s got plans already so I think this has really helped her organize her thoughts and where she wanted to go,” said Bright.

Each of the states will be represented in this weekend’s contest. The national contest begins Friday and wraps up with finals on Monday.

Storytellers group to launch Speakers Program this weekend

(Seguin) -- Let the storytelling begin. Seguin Storytellers, the town's newest non-profit, will officially host its first event as a brand-new organization this Sunday in the Seguin Public Library.

Complete with its own board members and the vision for a wide range of future events, the group is excited to host the first of eight in a panel of guest speakers for the community. This Speakers Program will continue the last weekend of each month.

Joe Saenz, the new board president for Seguin Storytellers, says this Sunday, the group will welcome the words of Mark Keddal, a recently retired Seguin High School humanities teacher. He says Keddal's presentation titled "Living a Story Makes Us Truly Human," is the perfect

way to introduce the newly formed group to the community. "Many people have spoken to me about his very inspirational thinking and travels and so he is going to bring a talk to our audience. I personally am looking forward to the inspiration that that is going to provide to all of us. Students of his have told me how instrumental he has been in influencing their lives and I've encouraged them to attend. But he's extended his concern for his students by mentoring some of them and including them in his travels abroad. So, I think the whole underlying goal is to renew the appreciation among the business community and residents at large and what people have contributed to Seguin's history and to its culture," said Saenz. Storytellers, continued.

Saenz says this Sunday will also be a great way for the community to learn about the key branches of the new group. He says the vision initially started a couple of years ago with his own personal interest in poetry and his desire to one day host a Poetry Festival in Seguin. He says the band of friends and community members that came together to hear more about the poetry festival has since evolved into this more elaborate group - a group that is already contributing to the community.

He says one of those contributions is the fostering of a teen writing and art program at the Seguin Public Library. He says Bianca Perez, one of its board members has been helping to lead the program which works with the youth in sharpening their talents. As the Deputy Director at Texas State University for the Master's in Fine Arts Program, he says Perez has been bringing graduate students and the teens together for the one-of-a-kind experience.

He adds the partnership with the Seguin Public Library has also helped to make this group a reality - further fueling the future of this group. Other formal board members include Tess Coody-Anders and Cathy Fennel.

The launch of the Seguin Storytellers' Speakers Program gets underway at 2 p.m. Sunday in the library's Community Room. The event is free.

(Kingsbury) -- Things will definitely be heating up at this year's 54th Annual Kingsbury VFD's Benefit Bar-BQue & Drawing.

The fundraiser is set for Saturday night at the volunteer fire department.

Barbecue plates will be served from 5 to 9 p.m. Cost is $15 a plate. This year's event will again feature a country store, auction, beer garden and margaritas.

The auction gets underway at 7 p.m. followed by a free dance at 9 p.m. The dance will feature live music by Clint Taft & The Buck Wild Band.

All proceeds go to help support the area fire department. The volunteer fire department is located at 1066 FM 1104 in Kingsbury. The event is free.

"If you want to see stellar children in this community just come see what these kids can do. It's heartwarming and it will make you smile and if you are having a bad day, come out and see Finding Nemo Jr. We will brighten your day. I guarantee you. We have fish of every color, shape and size -- flying through the audience, swimming under the sea and singing and dancing. it's just going to be magical. It's an hour of pure magic so don't miss it," said Lucas.

Lucas says she continues to be amazed by all the new talent that the program welcomes. She says they are indeed stars in the making.

"They become stars overnight and our youngest are five years old. They are in kindergarten and we go up to 14 years old in the 9th grade and our five-year-olds, they steal the show -- of course. They can't help it. They steal the show," said Lucas.

Show times are at 7 p.m. both Friday and Saturday. A Sunday matinee is also scheduled for 2 p.m.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under.

Tickets can be purchased online at www.thetexas.org. They can also be picked up locally at Gift & Gourmet, Keepers Interiors & Furniture or at the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce.
