Words of comfort, support continues to pour in for Belicek Family

Seguin mourns loss of SHS athlete killed in area car crash

(Seguin) -- The Seguin community continues to mourn the loss of a local Seguin High School teen who died following injuries sustained in a vehicle crash last week in San Marcos.

San Marcos Police responded to the crash before 5 p.m. Wednesday on State Highway 123 near Love-Lady Lane. The teen, Chloe Belicek, died a day later, just after 8 p.m.

Immediately after hearing the news, Seguin community members joined the Matador Family to comfort her family. Personal tributes continue to

pour in on social media, remembering the 17-yearold, who is described as an elite athlete. She played on the high school softball and volleyball varsity teams and was also an active member of the FFA. Most of the praise, however, has been on the teen’s strong and positive spirit.

In her post, Kristin Daws-Dailey, the wife of Seguin Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Craig Dailey, states that “she was the light in the dark. Belicek, pg. 3

Tickets, sponsorships still available for Allan Dreibrodt Memorial Fundraiser

(Seguin) -- Allan Dreibrodt’s legacy for agriculture and youthrelated programs continues to grow each year that he is missed, and that’s all thanks to his family’s commitment to continue the passion he left behind.

Son Brannon Dreibrodt says tickets are still available for this Saturday’s 7th Annual Allan Dreibrodt Memorial Fundraiser to be held at the Columbus Club of Seguin (formerly the KC) Hall.

For the last several years, Brannon says the event, which bears the name of his late father, has been a major player when it comes to raising money for local kids involved in agriculture-related programs, like 4-H and FFA.

Brannon says his dad, despite his battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), always put others first.  Whether he was fulfilling the role of an ag teacher or local banker, he says his dad always managed to give back to his community.

“My dad did a lot in this community. He was big on agriculture. He was big in youth in agriculture. He was an FFA advisor. He was an Ag teacher. Back in ‘89, he was diagnosed with ALS and was given four years to live. He told me he was going to prove them wrong. Sure enough he did. He lived for 30 years with it and when he passed away in 2017 -- we say 30 years because he really started showing symptoms of it years but he started writing his memoirs back in the mid 90s but he said that if he ever got those published, he didn’t want any money from it. He wanted all the funds to go to youth and agriculture. So whenever we sold books, we put them in a bank account and we just let that build up and then when he passed away in 2017, 2018 came around and with Wells Fargo, he would always go and do the projects for them so he’d go to the auction and he’d buy for Wells Fargo and

we decided in 2018 after he passed away, you know he wanted to give this money to youth and agriculture so why don’t we do that. So I put together that money and, then I sold about $1,800 worth of sports memorabilia that I had and we took that and I think mom took some money out of her pocket and we gave away our first three scholarships and we went from that,” said Dreibrodt.

Brannon says witnessing his dad’s life led to the start of this very successful scholarship fundraiser.

“We decided to do an event in 2018. We did really well with that event and every year from then, it got even better and better including 2020 when everything was shut down and it’s been just better and better every year and it’s all for kids in agriculture. It’s for FFA. It’s for 4H. It’s for these kids that are showing these projects that are trying to put together money for college and help themselves and help out the future. It was a big part of my dad’s life so it’s a big part of our lives now. We just want to pass on his legacy and keep helping out this community,” said Dreibrodt.

This weekend’s fundraiser includes dinner by Next Door Catering, live and silent auctions, a liquor raffle, gun raffle and a dance featuring music by Gary Glenn &

The 20X Band.

Brannon says folks also have time to become a sponsor for the event. He says three sponsorship levels are available.

“So the Lonestar Sponsorship ($1,000) gets an appreciation gift, 10 event tickets, four gun raffle entries, 20 drink tickets, social media advertisement, logo on the banner. Chapter Sponsorship ($500) gets four event tickets, two gun raffle entries, eight drink tickets, social media advertisement and logo on event banner and Greenhand (Sponsorship, $250) gets two event tickets, one gun raffle entry, four drink tickets, social media advertisement and logo on the event banner. So, everybody gets something special no matter what level they are and we have a lot of businesses that are not even going to make it but they are still doing a sponsor because they want to help the community,” said Dreibrodt.  Individual tickets are $50 for adults and $25 for kids ages 7 to 12. Pre-sale tickets can be picked up at Gift & Gourmet. They may also be purchased by calling Brannon at 830-305-6037.

Doors open at 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3. The Columbus Club of Seguin Hall is located at 1015 S. Austin St.

The Return of the Pride at Texas Lutheran University

(Seguin) -- The sounds of a summer tradition officially wrapped up this week on the marching grounds of Texas Lutheran University. Since 2019, The Texas Hill Country’s Fredericksburg High School’s awardwinning marching band has chosen TLU as its summer location for band camp.

This year, the group arrived on campus on Saturday, July 20, and stayed through Wednesday the 24th. TLU’s Tracy Donley says

their days on campus were packed with marching rehearsals, sectional practices, and music enough to fill the Weston Center-but they also scheduled plenty of time for fun and games.

Director Brian Hecimovich, who’s been leading the band since 2021, says the organization likes the fact that TLU is close to home and that they have some personal connections here as well, like Jeremy Kindla and Carla Hulcy, both of

The smile that would always brighten your day, the hug that was needed and the wittiness that was appreciated. She was the first to arrive and the last to leave. She is the type of kid that everybody wanted to be around because her presence radiated light.”

Even folks who have never met Belicek have since passed on their condolences to family and friends.

One of those remembering her spirit was Lori Major Redix who writes, “Chloe, sweet girl, before a couple of days ago, I did not know you. Now, I feel that I am proud to know who you are. My husband, Coach Philip Redix, said you were special. He says you were just a really good kid, the kind you wish was your own child. He said you had great manners and were so happy. He said you were a joy to have around. He could see your potential and knew you were a champion in the way you performed. Until, a couple of days ago, I hadn’t had a conversation with him about you but sadly, this tragic event gave him a reason to tell me who you were.”

The community can find a host of many other similar posts praising Belicek for the life she lived. Several prayer gatherings have already been held in her honor. A number

whom work with the band, and both of whom are TLU alumni.

With another successful band camp in the books, the band director continues to praise the TLU summer experience and adds that “it just keeps getting better and better.”

TLU is available for camps and conferences throughout the summer up until Aug. 1. To inquire about booking next summer, contact Director of University Events Jonathan Zitelman.

of folks attended a prayer gathering on Friday at Matador Stadium. A moment of silence outside her family’s church, St. James Catholic Church, was also held on Saturday. A regularly scheduled mass, dedicated in her memory, also followed that afternoon.

A full investigation into the crash continues this week. However, initial investigation, according to San Marcos Police, indicates that after a minor collision, the driver of a Ford four-door passenger vehicle got out to “possibly” exchange insurance and/or figure out the damage with the driver of the other vehicle. While that driver was able to pull their vehicle off the roadway, the Ford vehicle sat disabled in the roadway will Belicek still inside in the passenger seat.

That’s when officers say a third vehicle, a Dodge pickup truck, collided with the back end of the Ford, critically injuring the teen. The driver and sole occupant of the Dodge was also transported to the hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries.

San Marcos Police say, at this time, it’s also unclear whether any charges will be filed.

Meanwhile, a Chloe Strong Memorial Fund has been set up at First United Bank in Seguin. Donations will be collected to help the family with funeral and medical costs. The bank is located at 200 N. Austin St.

COMMUNITY

For the second month in a row, the number of people unemployed has risen in our area and across Texas. The latest data from June 2024 shows a 4.2 percent unemployment rate for the eight-county San Antonio-New Braunfels metropolitan statistical area (MSA). The unemployment rate was 3.5 percent in May and 3.3. percent in April. Statewide unemployment is at 4.5 percent, up from 3.8 percent in May.

While there is a decrease in employment, the civilian labor force showed strong growth last month, adding nearly 50,000 Texans. Industries that added the most jobs were Construction, Private Education and Health Services.

We’re doing better than many other states and regions, however challenges still exist for those wanting to work. For instance, maintaining employment is hard to do when consistent childcare is unavailable.

Workforce Solutions Alamo helps working families receive assistance for quality childcare in your area. To qualify for financial help, family income must be below 85% of the state median income, which for a family of four would be $6,691 or less. Parents must be working, attending school or in training at least 25 hours a week or a combination of 50 hours for two-parent households. Unemployed parents may receive up to three months of childcare while searching for employment.

Enrollment in the childcare program is subject to the availability of funds. The need for childcare services is great in our community; therefore, we currently maintain

a list of families interested in enrolling in the childcare program.

Workforce Solutions Alamo staff works hard to find resources that open more opportunities for quality childcare spots. Texas Mutual Insurance Company just announced Workforce Solutions Alamo is one of this year’s recipients of $100,000 in grant money that helps non-profits like ours provide learning support for working families. We plan to use these funds to purchase curriculum for our childcare network, among other projects. So where do you start? Workforce

Solutions Alamo has 16 one-stop career centers throughout the 13-county region we serve. In addition to childcare resources, we provide job seekers employment information, and career development training opportunities. Whether you need a computer to fill out an application, want to explore training opportunities or get resume advice, our team is ready to help connect employers and employees.

We’ve also worked to make sure these centers are located near you. Call (210) 224HELP (4357) or go to workforcesolutionsalamo. org to find the closest location.
