Baby Fever comes to Seguin
New baby store opens TODAY in downtown
(Seguin) -- Downtown Seguin is welcoming its latest edition to its list of local shops. kicks & giggles Baby Store is opening its doors today.
Kyle Kramm, Seguin Main Street and CVB director, says its great to see the downtown thriving. He says the local shop gives the community one more reason to spend its dollars locally.
“We are always excited to welcome new businesses to downtown Seguin and one of the things that the community really wanted to see was more retail coming to downtown and so we are excited to be meeting a need for the community. It’s called kicks & giggles and so it’s a baby goods and kids’ goods store and so you can get toys and if you need a gift for a baby shower and things like that. It’s going to be a great addition for you to shop in downtown Seguin,” said Kramm.
Kramm says all it takes is one business to add to the overall success of the entire downtown.
“We’d like to believe that a rising tide lifts all boats in downtown Seguin. So, the more we have coming to downtown, everyone is just going to benefit and so, somebody might be coming to downtown to grab a bite to eat at Amy’s and Cathey’s and they are going to take a stroll and they are going to come across kicks & giggles and vice versa -- maybe someone is coming downtown to get a gift for a baby shower and maybe decide to stroll around downtown a little bit more. So, we like to say that getting new businesses downtown is just going to benefit everybody,” said Kramm.
Hours are Tuesdays through Fridays 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 4 pm.
Additional Façade Grants Awarded for Downtown
Special by Kyle Kramm, Main Street & CVB Director
(Seguin) -- Recently, the Seguin Main Street Advisory Board recommended to the City Council the funding of six FIX-IT Façade grants in downtown Seguin.
The façade grants continue to be the most effective tool in downtown Seguin's revitalization. These small grants make a big difference in a building owner or downtown business' ability to invest in Seguin. The grant can go to any exterior improvements in the downtown district, including ADA compliance, painting, roof repairs, awning construction, and lighting.
The six projects recommended for funding included the following:
• 102 Mosheim - Repair cracks in the stucco on the façade.
• 301 North Austin - A new sign for a tenant in the building.
• 314 North River - Repairs to the front porch.
• 112 West Court - Reconstruct their awning.
• 114 North River - Replace balcony doors.
• 110 South Austin - Reconstruct the rear gate.
All these projects were recommended to be funded at 50% of the project cost. These projects represent an investment of over
$50,000 in downtown Seguin. Since the façade grant program began, there has been a reinvestment of $4.00 by the private sector for every $1.00 invested by the public sector.
"Seguin Main Street has been awarding façade grants since 1998 and have been a driving force in rehabbing downtown properties," said Kyle Kramm, Main Street & CVB Director, "We are pleased to announce these grant awards and cannot wait to see the impact the projects have in all of downtown."
The Seguin Main Street Program will release a call for façade grant projects in October at the start of the City's new fiscal year. All downtown businesses and property owners are encouraged to get to thinking about projects that would benefit their business.

Pesticides Pose Cancer Risk As High As Smoking Cigarettes
(New York, NY) -- Pesticides could pose a cancer risk on par with smoking cigarettes. That’s according to a new study published in Frontiers in Cancer Control and Society. In major corn-producing states in the Midwest, the widespread use of pesticides could lead to hundreds of thousands of more cancer cases. In February, scientists also raised concerns that there was no safe exposure level to many common pesticides, which have been linked to lung, pancreatic, and colon cancers in children and adults, as well as leukemia.
HIV Drug Could Treat Patients For Just $40 Per Year
(New York, NY) -- A new, highly-effective HIV drug could treat patients for just 40-dollars per year. Early trials of the “vaccine-like” drug lenacapavir demonstrated 100-percent efficacy as a preventative treatment for HIV. It comes as a twice-a-year shot. Current treatments cost more than 40-thousand dollars a year in several countries, including the United States.
Food Retailers Issue Major Produce Recall
(Undated) -- Three food retailers are issuing a major recall on vegetables and herbs in 15 states that may be contaminated with Listeria. Aldi, Walmart, and Kroger are recalling the produce items they received from Ohio based Weirs Farm Inc., which includes green beans, cucumbers, and several types of peppers. The recall impacts some shoppers in the Midwest and the east including New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Ohio, Delaware, and Maryland. Doctors say most people are able to recover from Listeria on their own but high risk groups, like young children, elderly adults, and pregnant women, must be more vigilant.
Artificial Heart Implanted In Patient
(Houston, TX) -- Doctors at the Texas Heart Institute say they have successfully implanted a valveless artificial heart into a human. The procedure was performed at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center in Houston. The implant from BiVACOR is made of titanium and features a rotary pump with a single moving part. The rotor that pumps the blood is suspended in a non-contact position by magnets. The BiVACOR Total Artificial Heart is expected to be used on patients with severe heart failure while they await a transplant. Now that the first implantation is complete, four other patients will be offered the chance to participate in the study of the device.
