(Seguin) -- The days of having someone else pump your gas, clean your windshield, and check your oil are officially over, at least here in Seguin. Today, Randy’s Exxon, Seguin’s only full-service gas station and inspection center on East Court Street, is saying goodbye to the nostalgic practice.
Owner Randy Moore is closing up shop after 40 years of servicing the vehicle needs of local residents and opening up the bay doors for state vehicle inspections.
The end of Moore’s chapter is another casualty in the dying business model. In fact, he believes there are only 11 full-service gas stations still in existence in Texas.
“It’s been full service (since) around the 40s. I bought this place about 26 years ago. There are probably say about 11 of us left in the state of Texas. Me -- I’ve been staying with it for a pretty while so I don’t know if there are anymore out there staying a little longer than me but not too many. This is kind of a family thing (gas station business). It’s been in my family for 55 years. I came from Luling in 1998,” said Moore. Moore’s decision to close the
business follows the state’s move to no longer require safety inspections for vehicles starting Jan. 1, 2025. While it wasn’t the primary decision to say goodbye, he says it did weigh heavily in his decision to retire.
“It was used (inspections) to be able to pay my help and we did a lot of inspections so I saw the writing on the wall. I should have saw the writing on the wall last year but I thought I was going to go ahead and go another seven years and put new pumps in but about two weeks ago, I changed my mind,” said Moore.
Above all, Moore attributes the shutting down of a town staple as God’s timing.
“I think it’s the man upstairs that told me I was going the wrong way so I decided, hey, I’m going to close up and that’s what we are going to do and maybe try to sell this place. If it wasn’t for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, I couldn’t get up everyday and all I’m telling you right now is this city is a blessed city. We’ve got a lot of god fearing people. In fact, it’s a great city to raise a family,” said Moore.

(Guadalupe County) -- A burning pile of tires and scrap metal kept area firefighters busy Tuesday morning.
Bryce Houlton, assistant fire marshal and emergency management coordinator for Guadalupe County, says the fire was reported at 8:45 a.m. at Roadrunner Recycling near Beback Inn Road and State Highway 123 North.
“Units arrived in the area to find a cloud of black smoke coming from behind a scrap metal yard in the 16,000 block of State Highway 123 North. The fire was contained to a pile of tires and scrap metal approximately 15 x 15. Crews were able to keep the fire from spreading to the other piles of debris and also a structure near by. Crews did a pretty good job in getting the fire put out quickly and cleared the scene right before noon,” said Houlton.
Houlton says it’s challenging for firefighters to encounter these types of fires, as there are always unknown risks.
“It’s definitely challenging. Not only because of the toxic nature of the fire. Tires are sometimes made of a petroleum product and there is usually other items in those piles at a scrap yard. I’m not exactly sure what can be in there. We had a couple of those large scrap metals fires at CMS Steele in the past and those have always been challenging because you are not putting water on wood. You are actually trying to snuff the fire out which can be a little more difficult because of the nature of how that material is piled up. The fire can kind of hide in there and burn for a while so it takes a lot of water and moving lots of stuff around. Of course, it’s not light. It’s metal and heavy
equipment and it’s sharp so it’s definitely a hazard for fire fighters to put that fire out,” said Houlton.
Assisting the York Creek Volunteer Fire Department were Guadalupe County Fire & Rescue, the city of San Marcos Fire Department, South Hays Fire Department, the city of New Braunfels Fire Department, and the Guadalupe County Fire Marshal’s Office.
(Seguin) -- A trio of properties is getting a much deserved makeover thanks to funds approved by The Help Seguin Shine Task Force.
The grant awards totaling $7,500 are made possible from funds donated by City of Seguin utility customers and individual donations.
The 2023 award winners include the Texas Theater. The theater will receive an awning shade replacement in the amount of $2,500. The Seguin Heritage Museum will also use it's
$2,500 for building façade repair and clean-up. Also awarded $2,500 for façade repair for his Court Street business was Fabio Benjumea of Fabio's Jewelry.
Each applicant matched the award with volunteer labor and other donations. They now have one year to complete their projects before they can be reimbursed up to the amount of their grant.
The Help Seguin Shine fund is managed by a task force of eight
organizations and citizen boards. Those groups include the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce, Seguin Conservation Society, Seguin Guadalupe County Hispanic Chamber, Seguin NAACP/MLK Committee, Seguin Parks and Recreation Board, Seguin Planning and Zoning Board, and the Main Street Citizen Advisory Board. Proposals are judged on visibility, feasibility, cost-effectiveness, and community benefits. The task force
(New Braunfels) -- Texas State Technical College has named Mike Anderson as provost of its New Braunfels campus.
"Mike Anderson is a seasoned educator and the founding executive in charge of our New Braunfels campus," TSTC Chancellor and CEO Mike Reeser said. "His leadership is a key reason why his campus is growing."
Anderson began working in education in 2006 as a track coach in Vermont and since has worked at numerous colleges and universities across the United States. He came to TSTC in 2023 from Portland, Oregon, where he served as senior vice president at Multnomah University.
"I have purposely taken jobs with startups to build up, and not only build well, but quickly," he said.
Anderson is a native of Schertz, Texas, a town 16 miles from
Exxon, continued.
Moore adds that since he took over twenty-plus years ago, almost half of his clientele have died. He says it’s just the birth of new generations and the evolution of gas stations.
While things might have changed in the world, there are certainly things that have remained the same at Randy’s over the years. One constant was the duo you got with Randy and longtime employee Jimmy Rosas.
Moore says since the very beginning, Rosas, an inspector, has been working alongside him. He says that, following a 35-year career as a Seguin Fire Fighter, Rosas joined him on day one and has been working with him at the location for the last 22 years.
Rosas says that although today is bittersweet, he is very
New Braunfels. When he saw an opportunity to move back to Texas, he took it.
"I grew up driving through New Braunfels and always thought it would make a great college town," Anderson said. "Now here I am, turning it into a college town."
He holds a bachelor's degree in liberal arts from Thomas Edison State
appreciative of having been a part of the history of the gas station.
“We appreciate everyone that has come through here. It was a long ride for us and we enjoyed every minute of it. We were like mailmen, through rain, snow, sleet, sunshine, we were out there from day one till the final day,” said Rosas.
Although the pumps have officially been shut off, Moore and Rosas say they plan to finish off a full day on the job. They say it will also allow them to say “thank you.”
“I just want to thank the people of Seguin and thank my customers. I’m going to miss this place and also, I’m going to miss seeing some of these familiar faces that I have been seeing for years,” said Moore.
Randy’s Exxon is located at 502 E. Court St.

Chloe Marie Belicek, age 17 of Seguin, went to Our Lord on July 25, 2024. Chloe was born on May 17, 2007, in New Braunfels, Texas to Christina Marie (Machicek) and Brian Timothy Belicek. She was a member of the Seguin High School Class of 2025, the Gulf Coast Bombers 18u softball team, and an active member of St. James Catholic Church.
Chloe loved life and was a friend to everyone she met. She had a smile that could light up a room. She had an energy to her that kept others on their toes. She was smart and sassy, but in a good way.
Standing at a whopping 5 foot 4 inches, Chloe was larger than life and feared no one. She was well respected by her friends, teammates, teachers and coaches. She was outspoken and determined to do the right thing for herself and others, and she always defended her faith. She loved to hunt with her brothers and sister, even in the early morning cold. She loved to laugh with family and friends, especially gathering around the dinner table to share stories.
Strong in her faith, Chloe grew up in a Catholic family where she attended and graduated from St. James Catholic School. She was an active member of the St. James Youth Ministry and Junior Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She served our Lord as a responsible and diligent altar server on Sunday masses. To demonstrate her dedication of service to St. James, when she knew she had a softball game on Sunday morning after mass, under her altar server attire, she was dressed in her gameday uniform, ready to go. She was a “daughter” to many of the parishioners of St. James, especially to Father Greg and Father Dennis, who were the priests of the church. Because of her faith and family, Chloe was a role model to others, both younger and older than her.
Chloe attended Seguin High School for her Freshman, Sophomore and Junior years. While she was a good student in the classroom, she was a fierce competitor and focused athlete in volleyball & softball, and was an active member of the FFA. At times her daily schedule started before the sun came up and ended after it set. She played hard all the time and demanded the same from her teammates. She was tough on them when they made an error, but after the game, she showed love and encouragement. When things weren’t going her way on the court or field, she fought harder to be better. She was tough on others, but tougher on herself. She was a first-class athlete both on and off the field. Chloe was outspoken and a true leader. She motivated others and she always lead by example, both in faith and in life. After a long hard day
of school and sports practice, you could find Chloe on the tree swing in the front yard for much needed Chloe-time.
Growing up as the 2nd child of four, Chloe loved her family. As any child is expected, she did her chores, attended family functions and played with and supported her siblings. Living 5 miles outside of the City of Seguin, she treasured her family at home. She had a special bond with her siblings. Even though they fought and argued as siblings do, at the end of the day, love prevailed. She helped her parents with duties in the home, taking care of the land, running farm equipment, feeding cattle and other animals, and bringing in the harvest from their garden. She belonged to a close-knit family that ate and prayed together every day. Faith was so important to Chloe and her family that even on the road for out of town tournaments, she made it a point to attend mass.
Chloe dreamed of becoming a veterinarian and playing softball in college. She loved animals…chickens not so much. Chloe had the potential to play softball anywhere. She expressed interest in playing college ball in Florida or Tennessee, but getting closer to starting her high school senior year, Texas was where she wanted to play. While she considered Tarleton State University in Stephenville, her most recent decision was to play at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin.
Chloe is preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Julius Eugene Belicek, and her cousin, Faith Janak.
Survivors include her loving parents, Christina and Brian Belicek; brothers, Timothy Belicek and Gregory Belicek; sister, Audrey Belicek; maternal grandparents, Mary and Joe Machicek; paternal grandmother, Theresa Belicek; numerous aunts, uncles, great aunts, great uncles, cousins, other loving family members, and an entire community of friends including her St. James Catholic Church family, Seguin Matador family, and Gulf Coast Bombers Softball organization.
