WEEKEND EDITION

Train versus 18-wheeler accident reported at area intersection

(Guadalupe County) -Another accident was added to the books Thursday morning at the intersection of FM 78 and FM 1044 near Marion. Guadalupe County Sheriff's officials say no injuries were reported in the train versus 18-wheeler accident that occurred just before 11 a.m.

The accident did, however, shut down the roadway to traffic for an extended period of time. The

Guadalupe County Commissioners Court has been publicly encouraging the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to speed up its timeline for installing a traffic signal at that location. For years, they say that intersection has caused multiple accidents and in several of those months as many as one accident every two weeks.

Officials say investigation into the crash continues.

Urgent care center to host Back to School Bash

(Seguin) -- A local medical team wants kids to be both happy and healthy when they head back to school.

Rapid Urgent Care located at 920 W. Court St. near TLU is inviting families to its Back to School Bash this Saturday from noon to 2 p.m.

Businesses also joining forces with Rapid Urgent Care to help get kids ready for the classroom are Beyond Coffee and Seguin Wellness & MedSpa.

Urgent Care Manager Jill Ewald, says it was important for the team of businesses to come together and ensure that kids get what they need for free.

"We are doing a Back to School Special. We are giving out school supplies. We are doing back to school physicals for free that day within the 12 to 2 hour timeframe. Patients show up and just fill out the paperwork and we will get them taken care of as quickly as possible -- vision, hearing -- make sure everything is A-Okay. We've got some raffle tickets, some cotton candy, some popcorn and ice cream. We (also) have a mobile snow cone machine coming in. It's kind of saying goodbye to summer and hello to the school year," said Ewald. Bash, pg. 3

Marion VFD to host annual Sausage Supper fundraiser

(Marion) -- The Marion Volunteer Fire Department is inviting its surrounding neighbors to its annual 88th Sausage Supper and Live Auction.

The event will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Church.

Marion Fire Chief Jeremy Davenport says his crew is looking forward to another successful event.

“Traditionally, it’s a sausage plate that we sell there and it’s even a special blend of sausage that we get from Penshorn’s for the event. We are using local people as well as Circle G Catering to help us with getting the place prepared and then, we bring all the local businesses to help provide items for a live auction and this is a significant portion of our budget to be able to continue to buy the needed equipment and gear that we need for the volunteers in our community to serve it,” said Davenport.

Sausage plates catered by David Goerke’s Circle G Catering are $15

each and will be served from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. or until food runs out. Both a drive thru and pick up line will be available. Seating will be held at the church pavilion.

Other activities that day include a variety of games, bounce houses, bake sale and live music.

Davenport says folks will also want to warm up their arms for a little added fun at this year’s event.

“We’ve got a dunking booth. I’ll be sitting in the dunking booth from 11 a.m. to noon. We’ve got the school superintendent as well as the school principals from the Marion ISD. (They) are taking shifts as well so come out and dunk your favorite administrator,” said Davenport.

The invitation to come out and support Marion is an invitation for anyone in the area. That’s because when it comes to VFDs, Davenport says everyone benefits.

“Our district covers from just south of I-35 all the way to I-10 and

then between Cibolo and McQueeney. So, we cover a very large area. It is not just the city of Marion. We cover the county and then on top of that, we mutual aid to all of the other county departments. We have fought fires in York Creek. We have fought fires in Kingsbury. We’ve been to fires in Sand Hills and of course, all of our direct neighbors as well. To say that the Marion Volunteer Fire Department is just covering Marion is not true. We provide resources to the entire county and we’ve even been into Bexar County several times too, helping the big guys whenever they get very large events that happen,” said Davenport. To get a head start in the bidding process for this year’s live auction, folks are encouraged to check out the items on the Marion VFD’s Facebook page. This year’s auction which features 85 items gets underway at 2 p.m. Immaculate Conception Church is located at 212 N. Barnett St. in Marion.

Allan Dreibrodt Memorial Fundraiser tickets still available

(Seguin) -- There is still time to pick up your tickets for this weekend's annual Allan Dreibrodt Memorial Fundraiser. The fundraiser will be held this Saturday at the Columbus Hall of Seguin. The event is named after the late Allan Dreibrodt, who was both an agriculture teacher and banker and who had a passion for ag related youth programs, like 4H, FFA and the Guadalupe County Youth Livestock and Homemakers Show.

Son Brannon Dreibrodt says despite his father's battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease), it never stopped him from supporting these youth programs. He says that passion has carried into his family’s desire to keep fundraising for these causes each year.

Bash, continued.

"We go into this thinking, 'hey, we are going to do everything we can.' All the money goes to the kids anyway. We basically empty out our account other than what we need for the next year's event so it's a big

Ewald says school supplies will be available while supplies last. However, every child who attends will get the chance to win one of 10 clear backpacks filled with "extra" supplies.

Ewald says they also want to make sure that families take advantage of the free sports physicals. She says they are required if students plan on enrolling in those extracurriculum activities. She says there is no need for appointments or to pre-register.

"If they can provide the physical form, that will be the most helpful. We do have them. They can fill it out there and then we will have the doctor and the nurse practioner there that day and we will just have everyone come through and get a physical and make sure everyone is happy and healthy," said Ewald.

Ewald says Rapid Urgent Care is excited about serving the needs of Seguin and looks forward to everyone having a great school year.

"We are new but we are trying to be more involved with the community to be part of everything. If there is a need and if we can, we want to step up and fill that need," said Ewald.

Again, the Back to School Bash will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at 920 W. Court St.

deal to us. It means everything to us because that is what my dad wanted. This was his baby before he passed away," said Brannon.

The passage of the legislation follows pressure from children’s online safety advocates to regulate social media’s impact on youth mental health and potentially addictive features. Q: I have had a lot of tree trimming people coming by my house, and I’m receiving trimming notices on my door. I’ve heard we have Oak Wilt around here. What should these trimmers be aware of?

A: Oak trees that are susceptible to Oak Wilt are live oaks and the red oaks. Red oaks include blackjack, pin, Shumard, Spanish, and Texas. If you are trimming or cutting on any of these trees, spray the cut with paint. Usually the hottest or the coldest times of the year are the safest times to trim oaks, but I would still spray. If you need to plant trees, try to plant a mixed landscape with trees that are not susceptible to the disease. In the oak family, white oaks are the least susceptible and include bur, chinquapin, Monterrey and post oaks. I love my Monterrey oaks—they are large and beautiful. Other trees resistant to Oak Wilt include the cedar elm, pecan, redbud, Texas walnut, mesquite, Montezuma cypress, sycamore, Texas mountain laurel and desert willow.

Q: Should I be doing something to prepare my roses for fall bloom?

A: Doug Welsh’s Texas Garden Almanac suggests you should start to prepare your rose bushes in midAugust by pruning them back about 25 percent. Remove the old blooms and diseased rose leaves and clean up the dead debris beneath the plant. Pruning generates new

growth and, of course, more blooms. Fertilize with nitrogen. This can be one-fourth cup of urea per plant, or one-half cup of ammonium sulfate, or one cup of blood meal. Water thoroughly and mulch.

Q: I have a Warren pear tree that is covered in fruit right now. It also has a number of dying branches with blackened leaves and fruit. What is happening?

A: Fire blight is a pear disease that can cause severe damage and that can sometimes kill the tree. Warren pears are supposedly highly resistant to fire blight according to aggie-horticulture in their Home Fruit Production article on pears. The description of the disease says it appears in the spring, but this is late July. Prevention is spraying with streptomycin at first bloom, then at 5 day intervals. Once the disease is found, prune out the fire blightdamaged tissue by making cuts at least six inches below the diseased tissue. Sterilize your shears in a 10 percent solution chlorine bleach after you make each cut. One source says to prune during the dormant season, since pruning while the tree is actively growing may spread the disease.

FYI: Continue filling your birdbaths and water barrels for the wildlife around your house. To control mosquitoes, change the water frequently or use bacillus thuringiensis doughnuts to float on the water.
