Seguin Fire Department purchases EMS Units with grant funds
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- Two EMS units are hitting the streets of Seguin but one of them is not just any EMS unit. One of them is a state-of-the-art infectious disease ambulance. Thanks to $489,100 in grant funding from the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA), the city was able to purchase these vehicles.
Chief Dale Skinner says this is a big improvement for the city’s emergency medical service. He says the new IDRUs have the highest technology systems available. Whether it’s COVID or anything else, Skinner says they protect patients and medical personnel, giving them all peace of mind.
The new Infectious Disease Response Units (IDRUs) are specially equipped with a ceiling- mounted surface disinfection system, ultraviolet air purifiers, antimicrobial grab bars and a sealed rear cab with driver monitor communication, among other technological upgrades.

FOR SALE: Former South Texas Pregnancy Center looking for buyer
(Seguin) -- Are you in the market for a commercially zoned property near TLU? A local organization is hoping to find a buyer for its former location so that it can start paying down the amount it owes for its brand-new location.
Although it’s more than enjoying its newly constructed facility on East Kingsbury Street, The South Texas Pregnancy Care Center is working hard to close the chapter of its previous location.
Janice Weaver, the executive director for the non-profit program, says they are hoping to reach a buyer as soon as possible.
“Our old location is at 975 W. Court St. It is zoned commercial so it could be a commercial set of offices or things like that and right now, it is listed at $395,000. It’s 2,200 square feet and it’s pretty nice. It’s not like this but we were there for 14 years. It began at the strip center on 123 Bypass and College Street “we were in the strip center to start with and bought the building on Court St. in 2010. So, we were there for 14 years,” said Weaver.
Weaver says their other hope is that folks begin making donations toward their current building. The group, which had already outgrown its Court Street location, needed the larger and new space for programming, health services and to provide better privacy for families.
“The other thing I would say is that we have a goal of paying off our building and if someone would be willing to make a cash donation, we would put that straight toward the construction cost of this building. Our dream is to pay this off quickly because then all the money that donors donate to us -- all of that money can go back into the community,” said Weaver.
Weaver says they have been
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
more than grateful for the building experience and all those who came together to help provide this new space.
“We really would like to add a couple of staff people and to do that, you need more monthly operating expenses and so if we can pay the building off quickly, then we will have our donors -- we’ve got some great monthly donors, some churches, some businesses who send us a check every single month and that’s how we operate. We don’t take any federal or state funds,” said Weaver.
She says they are especially thankful to those who helped make a dent in the overall cost due to their in-kind donations.
“The Koehler Company bid this job at $2.5 million. Now, we have had some amazing donations and they actually cut their costs -- their profit margin and have given back some of that money to us. They have been amazing but we had roofing materials donated and steel donated and we had windows at cost and we had concrete donated at the cost of concrete. So we’ve had some amazing things come through to help build this building. So, right now we are
at $1.9 million -- not $2.5 -- $1.9 million. So, that’s pretty amazing right there,” said Weaver.
Weaver says donors are truly what helps keep the organization together for the community. She says they are there for those families who need it and understand the pregnancy care center’s mission.
“We would love for folks to come alongside us and support what we do, and we have monthly donors who give $10 a month and I have a monthly donor who gives quite a bit more than that. I mean, I have someone who gives $1,000 a month. It just depends on people’s ability and where their heart is and what they are willing to share. Everything helps. I’ll take the $10. We have quite a few who give $100 a month or $50 a month. Those are all treasured donations because everything that comes in here, we try to put back into the community,” said Weaver.
To donate, stop by The South Texas Pregnancy Care Center located at 1348 E. Kingsbury St. They may also donate online at southtexaspregnancycarecenter.com. Checks can also be mailed to P.O. Box 1962, Seguin, Tx 78156.
Getting ready to GO NUTS in Seguin
Special by Myra Salinas, Main Street & CVB tourism assistant
(Seguin) -- The City of Seguin’s Main Street Program and Visit Seguin are in preparation mode for the annual Pecan Fest scheduled for October 26, 2024. The annual event is a celebration of Seguin’s famous nut and the community’s cultural and agricultural heritage.
The annual event includes vendors, live entertainment, history, kids’ activities, and of course, pecans. Multiple nonprofit organizations and businesses host their own official Pecan Fest event creating a packed weekend of fun.
“Every year we (Seguin Main Street & Visit Seguin) work with our partners in planning and promoting Pecan Fest and all the activities associated with the day, like the Haunted Magnolia Hotel guided tours, the Wilson Pottery Foundation’s pottery show, and the Big Red Barn’s ag exhibits,” said Kyle Kramm, Seguin Main Street & CVB
Units, continued.
In early 2023, the Seguin Fire Department (SFD) received a Community Resiliency Award (CRP) funded through the Community Development Block Grant – CARES Act Program for the purchase of the two units.
The CRP is designed to help communities prevent, prepare for and respond to COVID-19 (or the potential for other pandemics) by creating, expanding or enhancing public services that provide medical care, among other things, in an effort to increase the community’s long-term resiliency and ability to mitigate future outbreaks.
The ambulances, manufactured by Frazer Ambulance Co. in Houston, were placed into service mid-April.
Director, “And we want to encourage other organizations to be involved in Pecan Fest 2024 by hosting their own Pecan Fest event.”
To host an official Pecan Fest event, the organization needs to develop an event that includes pecans or has a connection to Seguin’s heritage. Once the event concept has been developed, complete the participation form at the Seguin
Main Street office at 200 S. Austin Street. As your organization works to develop their Pecan Fest event, you are encouraged to consult with the staff of Seguin Main Street and Visit Seguin to discuss your plans.
Not looking to host your own Pecan Fest event? Maybe you might be interested in being a vendor at Pecan Fest. Seguin Main Street will be hosting their Fall Trade Days during Pecan Fest and there is still limited room for vendors. Vendor applications can be found online at www.seguingonuts. com or at the Seguin Visitor Center at 200 S. Austin Street.
Should you have any questions about participating in Pecan Fest 2024, contact the Seguin Main Street Program at (830) 401-2448 or mainstreet@seguintexas.gov.
Mark your calendars now to plan on having a nutty good time on October 26 at Pecan Fest 2024.
