Local non-profit to distribute school supplies
Deadline for online registration this Friday
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- A local organization is continuing its longtime tradition of making sure kids have the school supplies they need for the first day of school.
Precious Life Services is encouraging low-income families to register online for school supplies. School supplies are being made available for students in grades Pre-K through 12th.
Laraine Turner, of Precious Life, says although the free school supplies are free, registration is mandatory and must be received by this Friday, Aug. 9.
"They would go on our website preciouslifesuicideprevention.org and they would
click on the link to go to the registration form and they would just ask basic questions, how old is the child, the gender of the child and the school that your child will be going to and of course, the parent's name and their email and phone number in case we have to reach out to them. We really need to know because we are putting these kits together with the required materials that each grade level needs," said Turner. Supplies, pg. 3
Seguin invited to sound off on proposed Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone (TIRZ)
(Seguin) -- The city of Seguin wants to hear more about what the public thinks about the proposed Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone (TIRZ) for the city.
Kyle Kramm, Seguin Main Street and CVB director says a public hearing on the proposed idea is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 6 during the Seguin City Council meeting.
A TIRZ is a tool local governments can use to finance public improvements and infrastructure upgrades within a defined area using future tax revenues from the properties within the zone.
Kramm says the zone will have a tax increment base, which is what the city is currently collecting from the properties within the zone.
The city will continue to collect that same revenue, but as property values increase and bring in more revenue, a portion of that revenue
will be designated to go towards the zone. This is not an additional assessment on the properties. TIRZ, pg. 3
Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office warns of latest scam to hit the area
(Guadalupe County) -- Before you answer that next phone call, take note. Investigators with the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office say they have been made aware of people receiving calls from a person claiming to be Sgt. Kelly Mann.
Sgt. Mann, however, isn't the only name from the sheriff's office being used to threaten callers with paying a warrant for unpaid loans over the phone.
Sheriff's officials say they have received multiple reports about scam artists threatening citizens.
They say if they don't pay up, then they will be arrested.
Officials say this is not standard procedure for any law enforcement agency to call residents and request payment over the phone.
They also say that they do not ask for gift cards and bitcoins as payment.
Now if you do receive a phone call like this, officials advise that residents immediately hang up and report the call to their local law enforcement agency. More importantly, they ask that residents do not give payment or personal information over the phone.
Supplies, continued.
Turner says the non-profit organization understands that times are tough and wants to ensure that families who need the assistance are taken care of.
''We are just trying to help those during this time of the year especially if they have a lot of children. Money can get very scarce because they have to buy school clothes, shoes for the children, backpacks, things like that so if we can give them any ounce of support from what we give and we need to make sure we let the public know that of course, we are not going to supply the whole year of supplies to these children but we are going to give them something to give them a good start," said Turner.
For years, Precious Life, also known as Precious Life Suicide Prevention, has served the Seguin and surrounding areas providing total mental health services for youth, teens and adults. Turner says while efforts such as providing back to school supplies might seem simple to most of us, it can often disrupt the peace for moms and dads who also just want to do their very best for their children.
"We've been doing this since 1994 and it is actually a privilege for us to be able to be an outlet for the community especially families because in today's age, we are dealing with a lot of mental health issues that could lead to end
TIRZ, continued.
Kramm says in June of 2023, the Seguin City Council adopted the downtown master plan, which created a community vision for the future of the downtown district.
The plan included over 60 projects to implement.
Kramm says one of the projects the Seguin Main Street Advisory Board selected to accomplish first was the creation of the TIRZ in the downtown area.
“We are pleased to be making
of life and we want to tackle those mental health issues and sometimes being in a financial situation where you can't provide or you can't do what you normally would do because money is funny right now. To be able to find organizations such as Precious Life to be able to give some assistance -- we just want to help people, give them hope and let you know that you don't have to do this alone and it's not just us, there are other organizations out there," said Turner.
Turner says once registration is complete, then the organization will reach out to the families with details about how to pick up the school supplies. Again, she says the most important thing for the group is just making sure that whoever needs them gets them.
"You just don't have to be in need because you are on food stamps or whatever, you can be a working mom and dad working in a home that is still needing that extra help. So, we are available to anyone that is in need," said Turner.
To help distribute as many school supplies as possible, Turner says the group is also seeking school supplies and backpack donations.
To donate items, contact the Precious Life Services office at 830-372-5980.

progress with the projects in the downtown master plan, and this is the first step to give us another tool in our tool belt to work on the projects in the plan,” said Kramm.
“I see it as a way for downtown to invest in itself - the future taxes of downtown properties will be going to downtown projects.”
The revenue from the zone can be used for a variety of uses.
Such things include reservation of building facades, acquisition of land and structures, public infrastructure improvements,
streetscape beautification and economic development.
Once the TIRZ is created by the City Council, a board will be created that will develop a project and financing plan for the zone.
The proposed zone is anticipated to last 25 years and create at least $8 million to be reinvested into the zone.
The public hearing on the creation of the zone will be held as part of Tuesday’s regular council meeting.
The meeting gets underway at 5:30 p.m. today at Seguin City Hall.
Seguin boys force play-in game; Marion
Area high school football teams start practice for 2024 season
(Guadalupe County) -- Monday is the first day of practice for high school football teams in the state of Texas.
With UIL realignment, the Seguin Matadors, Navarro Panthers and Marion Bulldogs will be preparing for new district opponents this year.
The Matadors are looking to get back into the playoffs this year after having a school record streak of five-straight postseason appearances snapped in 2023. Seguin is moving into a formidable District 13-5A this season. Out of Seguin’s district are New Braunfels Canyon, Buda Hays and Kyle Lehman. Replacing the Cougars, Rebels and Lobos are New Braunfels, Comal Pieper and Victoria East.
The Matadors start their season on August 30th at home against Alamo Heights.
We’ll have the game for you on KWED and streaming at SeguinToday.com from Matador Stadium.
The Navarro Panthers will have three new
district opponents this season. The Smithville Tigers, Gonzales Apaches and Salado Eagles are replacing two teams, Manor New Tech and Austin Achieve in the new District 13-4A.
A tradition in Geronimo, the Panthers again made it three rounds deep in the UIL playoffs in 2023. Navarro opens their 2024 season at home against Floresville on August 30th.
The Marion Bulldogs will have one new district opponent while two schools move out of District 13-3A. Out are Blanco and San Antonio Cole and in is Florence.
After missing the playoffs in 2022, the Bulldogs made it to the Bi-District round of the UIL playoffs last season. Marion will be on the road at Stockdale on August 30th to begin the 2024 campaign.

Japanese Researchers Find Possible Cause for Autism
(Japan) -- Researchers in Japan say they may have found a link between symptoms of autism spectrum disorder and umbilical cord blood. According to a news release from the University of Fukui, the levels of a certain fatty acid in the umbilical cord blood during pregnancy appear to have an impact on developing ASD. This finding could “pave the way” to better understand how autism develops in children or developing tests that predict the likelihood that a child will have it.
