Seguin Chamber names 2024 Texas Woman of Influence
Tickets
sold out for this week’s annual conference
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- The two day 2024 Texas Women of Influence Conference is officially sold out.
The event, which is hosted by the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce and promotes the influence and contributions of incredible women in Seguin and throughout the state, is scheduled today, Aug. 7 and Thursday, Aug. 8 in the Seguin Coliseum.
The conference, which includes an evening gala and conference day, has managed to sell out back to back years.
Chamber President Chester Jenke says he believes the sold out crowd only solidifies the chamber’s initial vision for this event.
“When we originally sat down and started this event, we were looking at how do we honor somebody locally but how do we also reach out into the state and find somebody inside the state of Texas that is making an impact inside of not just our community but for the state itself -- to be that woman of influence. So, to grow it from our local folks and our first selectee which was from the Houston area -- to see those nominees that have come in after that
have just been impressive to me,” said Jenke.
The announcement of Elaine Bennet as this year’s Guadalupe County Woman of Influence award winner may have helped to drive the ticket sales.
Bennett serves as the CEO of Guadalupe Regional Medical Foundation.
Jenke says she was one of the nominees for the award and was chosen the winner by an outside
group that made the final selection.
“If you look at things that she’s been able to accomplish inside of our community, it’s head and shoulders above what most would expect. I think it’s more important to share that when we sent that out to five independent folks from different parts of the state, that they all came up with the same number one person out of the group of nominees that we had,” said Jenke.
Jenke says Bennett personifies community service.
She serves as the Secretary for the Seguin Economic Development Corporation, she’s a member of the Texas Lutheran University Business Advisory Committee, a member of the Texas Hospital Association Board of Directors, she serves as a board member for Communities in Schools of South-Central Texas, and she’s the Chair of the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce Public Affairs Committee.
Her past community involvement has also include things like serving as the Chairman of the Board for the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce, Church Council President of Seguin’s Faith Lutheran Church, and she previously served as a School Board Member for New Braunfels Christian Academy.

Candidate filing now underway for Navarro ISD School Board
(Geronimo) -- The deadline is fast approaching for those wishing to serve on the Navarro ISD Board of Trustees. The filing deadline for a place on the Nov. 5 school board election ballot is Monday, Aug. 19.
Chelsea Ormond, the director of communications for the Navarro ISD, says several positions will be up for grabs including one unexpired position.
“It will have three board of trustees at-large positions for four year terms which will begin Nov. 5, 2024 through November 2028 and there is also one seat that’s an unexpired term for a board of trustee at large position to fill a two-year term beginning Nov. 5, 2024 through November 2026 and that is the current vacant position which Mr. Hank Dietert had sat and he resigned recently,” said Ormond.
Influence, continued.
Throughout the years, chamber officials say Bennett has picked up numerous awards for having a servant heart and for never stopping until the work is complete.
Among her most notable work is the continued efforts to address food insecurity within the community by setting up food pantries for families in need and for the mega food distributions in Seguin and Cibolo.
The other available at-large positions are currently being served by President Renee Rehfeld, Vice President Melissa Sartain and Assistant Secretary Client Scheib.
To be eligible to be a candidate, a person must be a United States citizen; be 18 years of age or

In 2021, Bennett was recognized for coordinating a Food Bank distribution where over
older; have not been determined by a court to be totally or partially mentally incapacitated without the right to vote; must not have been convicted of a felony and must have lived in Texas for at least 12 months and six months in the Navarro ISD prior to filing. They must also be a registered voter in the Navarro ISD.
Ormond says access to candidate filing has been made simple and encourages anyone with questions to contact the district.
“They can either access the application online on our district website and the site is www.nisd.us/ elections and they can either access it there or we can print one out and they can come pick it up in person at Central Office,” said Ormond.
All applications both online or in person must be returned by 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19.
1.6 million pounds of food was distributed over several distribution events -- benefiting nearly 650 families
Despite her impressive resume’, Bennett says she was shocked when she heard that she had been chosen as this year’s Guadalupe County Woman of Influence.
“I was literally speechless because as Chester was telling me this, it just wasn’t sinking in and he did share the letter of recommendation and of course, it came from an
internal person here at the hospital that I work really closely with and she is really a dear friend and it just made it more important to me. I don’t know. I just do what I do because I like what I do. I love this community and to be recognized for these kinds of things, it just kind of takes you aback,” said Bennett.
Professionally, Bennett has provided the leadership for the Guadalupe Regional Medical Foundation, raising millions of dollars the non-profit foundation, Influence, pg. 3

which helps to advance the mission of Guadalupe Regional Medical Center.
Most recently, Bennett secured $10 million from the Texas State Budget, to construct a new medical office building that will support further advancement of local healthcare providers.
Bennett says she takes pride in her role at the hospital, which allows her to serve the community as a whole.
Although Bennett was surprised by the recognition, she says looks forward to Wednesday night’s gala when she is presented with the honor, and will be given the chance to encourage others to follow their hearts and rely on their talents.
“I think that every person has their own special
passion that they carry with them and I would say that sometimes it is maybe something that you are kind of afraid to do but I would say if it is within you and it’s outside of your realm of comfort zone, that is exactly what that person that we all listen to -- the man above -- he wants us to stretch and serve others and when you have the ability to do that and the confidence of him knowing that he is guiding you, I mean there is nothing that you can not do,” said Bennett.
Tonight’s gala will be followed on Thursday with the annual conference which will feature two speakers, six breakout sessions, an Inspiration Center, vendors plus this year’s Keynote Speaker Jan Hargrave.
Chamber officials say those who managed to secure a ticket will get to enjoy several other inspirational speakers, personal and professional development, and a special surprise networking event at the end of the day.

Navarro Panthers start preparation for 2024 football season
(Geronimo) -- The Navarro Panthers got in their first day workouts on Monday in preparation for the 2024 football season.
The Panthers have only 17 returning lettermen from a squad that went 9-4 in 2023 and finished second in District 13-4A at 4-1, one game behind district champion Wimberley. Navarro head coach Rod Blount is preparing his team for his seventh season in Geronimo. The Panthers have advanced at least three rounds in the UIL playoffs in each year of Blount’s first six seasons as coach.
Blount says his players were ready to go on the first day of practice.
“It’s just a learning day coming out and trying to set the tone for the season, get all the fundamentals taught, stance alignment
and getting our keys done and making sure everybody’s on the same page. The kids came out with a good attitude. At five o’clock this
morning, the kids were here an hour early ready to go and it’s great to see that excitement.”
Navarro will start the season on August 30th at home against Floresville. The District 13-4A season for the Panthers will begin on September 27th when the Wimberley Texans come to Erwin-Lee Field on the campus of Navarro High School.
The Seguin Matadors and Marion Bulldogs are also underway with workouts this week. We’ll have a look at how their early practices are going later this week. Our high school broadcast schedule begins on August 30th when Seguin hosts Alamo Heights at Matador Stadium. You’ll hear all the action on AM 1580 KWED and streaming at SeguinToday.com.
