City of Seguin takes official steps towards a possible aquatics/rec center
Darren Dunn
(Seguin) -- The city of Seguin is moving forward with a study that could eventually lead to a bond election calling for the possible creation of an aquatic and recreation facility.
The idea of creating a community recreation center, with swimming pools, was well received during a recent meeting of the Seguin City Council.
The item was back on the council’s agenda on Tuesday night, with a request that the city hire a consultant to conduct a feasibility study on the project.
Parks and Recreation Director Jack Jones says they are hiring Brinkley Sargent Wiginton Architects. The company will help better inform the city and the
public about the possibilities for the project.
“The study is just the start of the process to inform council, citizens, staff of what it would take, what it would cost, how big, how small, locations, programming, staffing -- all of those things come into play with a feasibility study,” said Jones.

(Seguin) -- The Seguin ISD will be giving its students and their families a running start when it comes to celebrating a brand-new school year.
The Seguin ISD will be hosting its 3rd Annual Back to School Bash tonight in the Seguin High School Cafeteria.
Instead of hosting the event later in the fall, Allison Seidenberger, Ace coordinator, says the district wanted to offer up the district wide event to families before the first day of school. She says not only does it allow them to help students get rid of any first day of school jitters, but
it provides another night of some summer fun.
“Every campus and several of our Seguin ISD departments
are part of the event and will run either a booth or an activity. We have some resource booths that are also going to be there and so we are just looking forward to having an opportunity to welcome back all of our Matadors from the youngest to the oldest and spend some quality time together. There will be a free hot dog supper with chips and water that will be provided as well. A couple of the booths involve snacks. I believe we have a pickle booth and a popcorn booth it will be a good time to connect and engage and do some fun stuff,” said Seidenberger. Bash, pg. 3
All Seguin ISD families invited to Back to School Bash Tickets now available for Seguin's birthday party
Entries sought for homemade ice cream contest
(Seguin) -- Well, here's your invitation to the city of Seguin's 186th Birthday Party.
The party hosted by the Seguin Conservation Society will be held this Friday from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Texas Theatre.
Conservation Society President Marty Keil, says the party includes a barbecue dinner, live music plus homemade ice cream contest.
"It's for a barbecue dinner catered by Next Door Catering and it will be brisket with sausage, green beans and potato salad and then you will have your water or tea. We will have entertainment on the stage with Kirk Herbold and Friends. Dottsy will be there. We also have a homemade ice cream contest. We invite anyone to enter. Just do not use any raw eggs and this year, we have
opened it up so there are no set categories. You just make your favorite recipe and if you would have it at the Texas Theatre by 4:45 on Friday afternoon, it will be judged at 5 o'clock and we have four judges that will be doing that and then after the judging and the awards have been placed, we will open it up to the public and we will serve ice cream to the public for $2 a scoop or 3 for $5," said Keil.
At 6:15 p.m., she says party guests will also get to enjoy the delivery of the proclamation of the city by a member of the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Posse. The proclamation will be delivered on horseback and presented to the mayor who will then read it before party goers.
Keil says the hosting of the birthday party is a longtime tradition and a very significant piece of the city's history. Birthday, pg. 3
Navarro ISD shares Meet the Teacher schedule
Bash, continued.
Seidenberger says tonight’s Back to School Bash is also the perfect time for families to stop by with any questions that they might have in preparing for the upcoming school year.
“I know transportation will be there to answer questions if anyone has questions about that. The Child Nutrition team will be there and will have a table as well. JAAM which is one of our afterschool programs that we partner with the city of Seguin with and then of course, the ACE Afterschool team will be present. We are just excited to provide information, see what help we can be to provide students and families with the support they need to get the school year off right. But more than anything, just some time together, to have some fun and enjoy a hot dog supper together so we hope everyone can come out,” said Seidenberger.
The Back to School Bash will be held today from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the SHS Cafeteria and Patio area. Free hot dogs will be served while supplies last.
(Geronimo) -- The Navarro ISD kicks off its Meet the Teacher schedule for students districtwide. Today is Meet the Teacher for Navarro High School students from 6 to 7 p.m. Today is also orientation day and Meet the Teacher for sixth graders at Navarro Junior High School. Sixth graders are encouraged to stop by campus today from 4:30 to 6 p.m.
On Friday, Navarro 7th and 8th graders will be returning to campus to pick up their
schedules from 4:30 to 6 p.m.
The Navarro Meet the Teacher schedule continues on Monday for both intermediate and elementary school students. Meet the Teacher for these two campuses on Monday will also be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m.
Navarro freshman will also be getting a head start in the new year with Freshman Camp scheduled on Monday from 9 to 11 a.m. The first day of school for all students in the Navarro ISD is Wednesday, Aug. 14.
Birthday, continued.
"The Seguin Conservation Society has hosted a birthday party for the city of Seguin for about 70 years since the conservation society was founded back in the 50s. Originally, I think it started being celebrated down at the Starcke Park Bowl. It has been held at Sebastopol and then most recently and for many years, it has been at the Heritage Village on the 200 block of East Live Oak. However, last summer, it was so beastly hot that we finally decided to move into an air conditioning place and we went to the Conservation Society's own Texas Theatre and that was a huge hit with the community because we were cool on the hottest month of the year," said Keil.
The birthday party will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
Dinner tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Pre-sale tickets can be purchased at Gift & Gourmet or at the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce.
Keil says only a limited amount of tickets will be available at the door.
"We also have a to-go line for the barbecue out in front of the theater and if you will drive north on North Austin Street and stop in front of the double glass doors, someone will come to your car. If you have your tickets in advance, you will be at an advantage because I don't know how many we will actually have left if you pull up and don't have a ticket," said Keil.
Those wishing to enter the homemade ice cream contest are asked to call Edith Lange at 830-660-1732.
There is no fee to enter the ice cream contest. The Texas Theatre is located at 425 N. Austin St.
Aquatic, continued.
The firm has a long history of helping to inform decision makers about these kinds of projects. Jones says that’s one of the reasons why they were selected to work with the city of Seguin.
“Brinkley Sargent Wiginton Architects -- they did the one in New Braunfels back in 2014. That led to Das Rec that opened in 2018. Currently, Brinkley Sargent and Wiginton, they are working on several projects just in the past couple of years in Sherman, Texas; Pasadena, Deer Park, College Station, North Richland Hills, McKinney, Irving and New Braunfels,” said Jones.
Jones says that the study will look at every aspect of this potential project, including things like what people want in a recreation center and ultimately what the city can afford to build and operate.
The study will explore all options and give the city all the information that it needs to make a decision about the project’s future.
“It does incorporate a recreation center and it is also indoor, outdoor aquatics. That can be indoor. It can be outdoor. It can be both. So, the study will look at Seguin and look at us and see
what we can afford and really the company, their philosophy is provide sound data and informed advice to the client to enable the most educated decision making possible which this is. We are educating ourselves to make a decision about a possible rec center, aquatics center at some point down the road,” said Jones.
The architectural firm will do more than just look at the building and the programs that could be offered there.
Jones says the consultants are bringing in some additional professional help that will pinpoint the financing and costs of the project, and also help to determine exactly what people want and what they are willing to pay if the center is built.
“They have a couple of sub consultants. One is called PROS Consulting. They help with the financial stuff. They do financial analysis across the country and also, for the statistically valid survey, that is going to be subbed out to a company called ETC Institute. They do the surveys in their sleep across the country over 600 in 49 states,” said Jones.
Jones says the statistically valid survey will be a very important part of the overall feasibility study. He says it will give the city the best possible
feedback from the public, and provide a better picture of what the community really wants.
“We know antidotally in the parks master plan of 2020 that people want this. People are telling us they want this. If you want this, we are hearing some of the things that you have to consider. So, the survey, when it comes out, will be statistically valid. It’s one thing for people to go online and hit ‘yes, yes, yes, no, no’ and all of that -- This will be something that is mailed out to all demographics, neighborhoods -- things like that. There is a science to this and then, the response can be either in writing or online through a QR code that can only be used one time. So, it can’t be some group, a bunch of swimmers that say ‘hey, we want big 50 meter pool and they just stack the decks. That can’t happen,” said Jones.
The city will pay just over $106,000 to fund the feasibility study. The work on the study will be done in phases. Phase one will be a needs assessment. Phase two will provide concept options for the project and establish an overall vision for the work. The third and final phase will provide an operation and financial plan for the project.
The council voted unanimously Tuesday night to move forward with the study.
Seguin boys force play-in game; Marion
Marion Bulldog workouts underway for 2024 high school football season
(Marion) -- The first week of practices are underway for the Marion Bulldog football team.
The Bulldogs finished fourth in District 13-3A last season and reached the BiDistrict round of the playoffs. Marion head coach Ryne Miller is entering his seventh year as the Bulldogs’ head coach. He says the first couple of days of practice have been productive.
“It’s going great. We’ve got early morning practices right now with guys up here at 4:30 in the morning ready to roll and we weren’t on the field until 5:45,” Miller said. “The sense of urgency is there and you couldn’t ask for more. We went straight to work and I feel like we’re ahead of where we need to be, which is a good thing but I know these are gonna keep trucking along and be ready for
non-district and district.”
This season, the Bulldogs will see some small changes in their district with UIL realignment. New to District 13-3A this year is Florence, while shuffling out are Blanco
and San Antonio Cole. Ingram-Moore, Llano, Luling and Randolph are back as Marion’s district mates. The Randolph RoHawks were the co-champions of the district last season with Blanco.
Marion will open their season on the road on August 30th against Stockdale. The Bulldogs start district play on October 4th against Luling in a game you’ll be able to hear on KWED.
The Seguin Matadors and Navarro Panthers are also underway with workouts this week. We’ll have a look at how the Matador practices are going on Thursday. Our high school broadcast schedule begins on August 30th when Seguin hosts Alamo Heights at Matador Stadium. You’ll hear all the action on AM 1580 and streaming at SeguinToday.com.
