Online contest has Seguin in the running for $75,000 worth of playground equipment

(Seguin) – This week is the beginning for Seguin residents, and other supporters, to vote for an effort that will give the city a chance to win $75,000, that will be used to help purchase new playground equipment for Max Starcke Park.

Max Starcke Park East has been selected as 1 of 9 park projects in the running for the money being made available through the 2023 Niagara Perk Your Park Campaign from Niagara Bottling’s charitable program, Niagara Cares. The Perk Your Park Campaign is the company’s initiative that focuses on park and community space revitalization across the country.

The Niagara online contest is also being conducted in partnership with the National

Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). Jack Jones, Seguin Parks and Recreation Director, says with the community’s support and daily votes online, the city of Seguin has a chance to assist the rebuilding the beloved Kids Kingdom playground that was removed from the park this past spring due to safety issues.

“The competition is pretty stiff because it’s got Seguin. We are about 35,000 people and some of the cities that we are up against in this competition -- one is Ontario, California. That’s a big city. We are up against three cities in Texas – Lancaster, Texas I think is bigger than Seguin. Baytown, Texas I think is bigger. Missouri City is a little bigger I believe so we are ready to go with this campaign to get people to use their devices this time instead of their hands to be involved in helping the city of Seguin to be one of the top three vote getters to be awarded this $75,000 grant that will help us to pay for this new playground to be installed,” said Jones.

Winning this grant Jones says will help the city construct an all-inclusive playground that will again sit next door to its current playground equipment. He says the plan is for the play structure to include four accessible play features for children with disabilities.

“With the new playground that is there now, we can put in things in this new playground that are not in the other playground.
