Tax Free Weekend now underway in Texas

(Seguin) -- Get ready to save at the cash register this weekend. That’s because it’s tax-free weekend all across the Lone Star State.

The Texas Comptroller encourages all taxpayers to support Texas businesses while saving money on tax-free purchases of most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks (sold for less than $100) during the annual Tax-Free weekend.

Qualifying items can be purchased tax free from a Texas store or from an online or catalog seller doing business in Texas.

This year’s sales tax holiday begins today and runs through midnight on Sunday.

The sales tax exemption applies only to qualifying items you buy during the sales tax holiday. Items you buy before or after the sales tax holiday do not qualify for exemption, and there is

no tax refund available.

Delivery, shipping, handling, and transportation charges by the seller are part of the item’s sales price.

Since clothing, backpacks and school supplies have to be less than $100 to qualify, customers have to look at the item’s total sales price to determine if they can buy it tax free.

Elks Lodge to host annual Kids Cuts

Local businesses to offer free back-to-school haircuts

(Seguin) – Going back to school also means having kids look and fee their best. Helping to provide that boost of confidence this weekend will be the Seguin Elks Lodge. The lodge will be continuing its tradition of providing free haircuts to kids from noon to 6 p.m.

Kristine Bode, president and exalted ruler of the organization, says the group is inviting families to stop by for free Kids Cuts plus some other back-to-school goodies as well.

“Over the last few years, we’ve tried to do things back to school. This year, it finally has all come

together as one event. Last year, we did the kids cuts and then in a different time frame, we did some back-to-school supplies. This year,

we combined it all to where it is a one stop shop. They can come in and get the kids cuts. We will have some snacks for them while they wait if there is a line. We also have goodie bags for them. Each bag has a little winter hat and some gloves. It has a few school supplies and lots of healthy after school snacks in it,” said Bode.

Bode says the Seguin Elks Lodge appreciates the five licensed cosmetologists who will be donating their time. She says they all understand the stress that this time of year can have on a family. Haircuts, pg. 3

AJB, Ball ECC to open doors for public tours

SISD to host new facilities ribbon cutting this Monday

(Seguin) – Doors to a pair of Seguin ISD campuses will be open for a special tour this Monday morning. A tour and ribbon cutting are being planned for the fully renovated A.J. Briesemeister Middle School and the newly expanded Ball Early Childhood Center. The voter approved bond projects officially wrapped

up this past spring. The ribbon cutting at Ball will be held at 9 a.m. Monday followed by the AJB ribbon cutting at 9:45 a.m.

Seguin ISD officials say the public is encouraged to take a sneak peek at the facilities before they become fully operational for the first day of school on Thursday, Aug. 15.

School supplies needed this Saturday at Austin Street Market

Donors to receive chance to win gift card prizes

(Seguin) – Don’t forget to bring your pencils, composition books and folders down to Austin Street Market this Saturday.

Owner Taylor Dvorak says after successfully accepting requests from families, the business had to quickly pull its online school supply registration link after quickly reaching 100 students.

"It's really mind-blowing. I reached out to David Ricker of Communities in Schools (of South Central Texas) to help us kind of meet that need. So, he is looking into what they have but it is an overwhelming need and there aren't many school supplies being donated through the Pack the Bus and those different sign-ups that Communities in Schools is also putting on. So, they will actually be there with us at our Back-to-School Market on Aug. 17 where we will be distributing and gathering as many school supplies as we can for all these students. I know that it's after school starts but even then, a lot of people are still in need," said Dvorak.

As an incentive, those who donate will automatically be entered into a gift card drawing. Dvorak says a number of businesses have all come together to support the effort. Gift card prizes include Schulze’s Pit Room; ZDT’s Amusement Park; Court Street Coffee and Cosmic Express Car Wash.

Donations can be made this Saturday at Austin Street Market during its weekly farmers and artisan markets from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A drop off box will also be available through Aug. 17 inside the Weyel West Mall located at 420 N. Austin St. Those who donate at the mall are asked to leave a note with their name and phone number so they too can be entered in the giveaway.

To donate online, visit the Austin Street Market Facebook page. Austin Street Market is located at 414 N. Austin St.

Deadline arrives for youth soccer season

Late registration ends Saturday

(Seguin) – You don’t want to miss out on the upcoming soccer season. Saturday, Aug. 10 is the last day for late registration for the Seguin Youth Soccer Club. Registration is available for players with birth dates between 2012 and 2021. The late registration fee is $90 and includes a jersey, shorts and socks.

Games begin Sept. 21st. The season will consist of 8 games. The league will consist of possibly six Saturday games and two weekday afternoon games for each team. Games that are played on Saturday mornings at Park West will be held between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. New players will need to upload a copy of their birth certificate for registration.

Practices begin the week of Sept. 9th and will be held on Tuesdays or Thursdays. Practice times will be determined by each coach. Coaches are also needed. The registration link is available at: https://tinyurl.com/24seguinys

The link can also be found on the Seguin Youth Soccer Club Facebook page.

Haircuts, continued.

This is just something that is near and dear to us. We want to make sur each child has what they need as best as we can, and the free cuts are really a big deal. Parents are so strapped right now trying to get supplies and trying to get clothes and shoes,” said Bode.

There is no registration required and the haircuts will be provided on a first come, first serve basis at the Elks Lodge located at 1331 C.H. Matthies Jr. Parent haircuts will

also be available for a $10 donation.

Like the Elks Lodge, other businesses are also doing their part to send kids back to class with that extra boost of confidence.

Others offering free kid’s haircuts include Texas Styles (501 E. Kingsbury St.) from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday; Paramount Barber Lounge (225 Saunders St) from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday and The Ozone Barbershop (550 State Hwy. 123 Suite 15) from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

For example, you buy a pair of jeans for $95 with a $10 delivery charge for a total price of $105. Because the jeans’ total price is more than $100, tax is due on the entire $105 price. If a delivery charge is billed per item, and an invoice has both exempt and taxable items, only the qualifying exempt item’s delivery charge is exempt. If the delivery charge is a flat rate per package, and the amount charged is the same regardless of how many items are included in the package, the total charge can be attributed to any one of the items in the package.

This year the Texas comptroller’s office estimates shoppers will save $112 million in state and local taxes. For a complete list of items that qualify for the break at the State Comptroller’s website, visit comptroller-dot-texas-dot-gov.

Seguin Matadors prepare for tough District 13-5A

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Matadors are busy at work this week for the first week of practices ahead of the 2024 football season.

The Matadors are returning five offensive starters and six on defense from a team that finished 3-4 in a tough District 12-5A last season. The Matadors will compete in District 13-5A this season with a pair of teams that won district championships last year in District 125A champ Smithson Valley and Comal Pieper who won District 13-5A, Division II.

Seguin head coach Craig Dailey says his team will be challenged by their district schedule.

“It’s gonna be a good district. You’re gonna have to bring it every week and that’s fun. That’s what we told our guys, you have to go to work every week. If you want to be one of the best in the state of Texas, you have to play guys like that,” Dailey said. “If you get to the playoffs

in this district, that means you’re pretty good. You’re gonna have a chance to make a three or four round (playoff) run.”

Seguin starts their non-district season with Alamo Heights in their first game followed by a trip to Corpus Christi Miller. The Mats will see five-star wide receiver Michael Terry and the Mules in their first game on August 30th at Matador Stadium. Dailey says their non-district games will prepare them for their district schedule.

“In non-district, we know we got the number one athlete in the state of Texas in Michael Terry in game one. So, that’s gonna be a test. And then we’re going down to Corpus and from what I hear, Miller has the best athletes in Corpus with some pretty good receivers and a 2000-yard back,” Dailey said. “That’s why we’re playing that schedule to get us ready for district

and you really don’t have a week off.”

Seguin will feature three-star receiver Nik Henry and quarterback Corey Dailey who returns to the position for the third straight year. Corey is of course the son of the head coach and the elder Dailey says Corey is bigger and stronger heading into his junior year.

“The game’s slowing down for him when you play that many games. He’s matured a lot physically. He’s grown, put weight on and increased his arm strength. Now it’s just the mental side I think. We know he has the physical tools, so that’s the next step he’s gotta take.”

We’ll have all of the Seguin Matador games this season on KWED. We start with the August 30th game against Alamo Heights. You’ll be able to follow all the action on AM 1580 and streaming at SeguinToday.com.

EPA Bans Pesticide Linked To Fetal Harm

(Washington, DC) -- The Environmental Protection Agency is banning a pesticide linked to irreversible damage to fetuses. The pesticide, known as DCPA or Dacthal, can cause low birth weights, decreased IQs and impaired motor skills. It was first introduced in 1958 to control weeds and identified as a potential hazard in the 1990s. The EPA’s Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention said in a statement Tuesday that “DCPA is so dangerous that it needs to be removed from the market immediately.”

Judge Rules Ohio’s Ban On Youth Gender-Affirming Care Can Go Into Effect

(Columbus, OH) -- Ohio’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors is surviving a months-long legal battle. On Tuesday, a Franklin County judge ruled House Bill 68 can go into effect. The law makes it illegal for doctors to provide treatments such as hormone therapy to address gender dysphoria in patients under the age of 18. The ACLU had filed a lawsuit to stop the measure from being activated, arguing that the law violates a state constitutional amendment that says no legislation can prohibit the purchase of health care or health insurance. The Civil Liberties Union plans to appeal.

Climate Change Can Have Significant Impacts On Mental Health (Sacramento, CA) -- There is growing evidence that climate change has significant impacts on mental health. Dr. C. Freeman, an Adult and Geriatric Psychiatrist with the California Medical Association, says excessive heat can cause disturbances in sleep, memory, mood, learning, and our ability to regulate our body temperature. A recent study reveals, too, that air pollution, which contributes to climate change, increases our risk of Dementia. According to the National Institutes of Health, rising temperatures can also lead to more aggression and suicides, and events like extreme storms, extreme heat, and prolonged drought can lead to PTSD, depression, anger, and even violence.
