Seguin ISD Meet the Teacher schedule begins TODAY
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) – Tonight is the night for Seguin ISD elementary school students to shake off any first day of school jitters. Today marks Meet the Teacher events at each of the elementary schools. Students and parents are encouraged to stop by their respective campus between 4 and 6 p.m. School officials say not only can kids visit their classroom, but they can also bring their school supplies so that they don’t have to haul them into school on the first day.
Meet the Teacher and Schedule Pick-Up are also scheduled this week for both middle schools.
A 6th grade Meet the Teacher and Orientation for A. J. Briesemeister Middle School (AJB) will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Schedules for all 7th and 8th grade students will also be available for pick up on Tuesday beginning at 5:30 p.m.
A 6th grade orientation at Barnes Middle School which includes a parent meeting, Meet the Teacher and tour of the building will also be held Tuesday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. As for Barnes 7th and 8th graders, students will receive their schedules during first period on the first day of school. Students at Jim Barnes can also access their schedules online. An open house for Barnes won’t be held until Sept. 3.
Over at Seguin High School, students today will have a schedule distribution day rather than a Meet the Teacher. Additionally, schedules will be available through the online portal, TEAMS. However, those wishing to stop by the school today are encouraged to do so at their designated time beginning with the first letter of their last name.
This includes A-D 8:30 to 10 a.m.; E-H, 10 to 11:30 a.m.; I-O 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.; P-S 1 to 2:30 p.m. and T-Z from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Those unable to stop by during their designated time will have until 6 p.m. today to obtain their schedule.
Meanwhile, unlike the rest of the district, all Seguin ISD Pre-K Ball students won’t be returning to school until Monday, Aug. 19. Meet the Teacher for Pre-K students at Ball Early Childhood Center are set for either Thursday, Aug. 15 or Friday, Aug. 16. Parents are reminded that teachers are working on scheduling those appointments personally.
District officials ask that Seguin ISD families continue to check their respective school’s Facebook page for changes or additional events being hosted at their campus.
continued.
Unlike past years, Dr. Vijil says this year’s convocation was bittersweet. That’s because this year’s message was more of a reminder for the district’s 1,000 plus employees.
“We have embedded the Matador Mindset. This is our hashtag for this year. We just want everybody to embrace this unity that has happened and it comes on the heels of the passing of Chloe Belicek who as a 17 year old was able to bring a community together like I’ve never seen so really just the words that I’ve heard spoken about her – her description, talking to her parents really has propelled us to know what
is really important in life. So, we can just make that energy, and that movement happen all year long and keep remembering to lift each other up. We are going to be okay, and our kids are going to be okay, and we are here for them and them for us, and we are here for each other. That’s the message,” said Dr. Vijil.
Chloe was a star athlete and a star student at Seguin High School who died from injuries sustained in a car accident in late July.
If anything, Dr. Vijil says Chloe embodied the direction that the district now takes.
“If a 17-year-old, in her 17 years, can model all the words that come to mind of what we think a Matador Mindset is – respect, kindness,
the love, the giving, the teamwork – all of that is really who we are. This is what Seguin is all about and this is what I have come to love and cherish about the Seguin community. In times of trouble or where there are obstacles, we have to come together,” said Dr. Vijil.
This year’s convocation theme was “Going for the Gold” in the spirit of the Summer Olympic Games.Employees at each campus uniquely represented their team at this year’s event. Following a cookout around the Coliseum gazebo, staff gathered inside for an “inspiring message” from Author Jill Siler.
The first day of school for the Seguin ISD is Thursday, Aug. 15.
Matador,
Boothe VITAL STATISTICS
Samuel Neail Boothe was born at home in the Avant Community of Atascosa County TX on February 15, 1942 to James Thomas and Martha Ophelia (Paul) Boothe. It was said the doctor could not get across the low water crossing because of rain so his father took the tractor and picked up the doctor at the crossing. Sam was raised as the son of a dirt farmer and enjoyed the country life. His maternal grandparents immigrated from Germany and he was very proud of his German heritage.
He attended Christine school, and when they closed, he went to Jourdanton, and later transferred and graduated from Charlotte School all in TX. Many years later he graduated from Eastern Kentucky University.
Sam joined the U.S. Navy in November, 1963. While in the Navy during 1965-1966 he was stationed aboard the USS Forrestal aircraft carrier. During this time, he went to many different countries. (France, Italy, Spain, Greece and Lebanon) While on the Forrestal he was the engineer of the captain’s boat. Sam finished his enlistment in November, 1967. Upon discharge he returned to Jourdanton, Texas.
On February 20, 1965, Sam met the love of his life, Eva Rachel (EvaRae) Bowles on a blind date. Thirteen days later they decided to marry and had a large church wedding on April 16, 1965. One month later they were on the road to Portsmouth, Virginia to Sam’s new duty location. Sam and EvaRae were married 59 years.
His pride and joy was his family. He had two sons, Dustin Neail Boothe and Clayton Neail Boothe. He coached each of his sons in sports, taught them to hunt and fish and to be hard workers. Every moment not spent at work was spent with his family, both at home and church. Sam was a deacon and he was very devoted and active in both families. He was ordained as a deacon in June of 1975.
Sam was a diesel mechanic for large equipment from 1968 until June, 1970 when he went to work as a mechanic at the laundry at Fort Sam Houston Texas. He moved up through the ranks and later retired as Manger, supervising
the laundries at Fort Sam Houston and Fort Hood simultaneously. Sam was talked into volunteering as a coach long before he had a child to participate. He coached teams in multiple leagues and sports for nearly 20 years, some years having two teams in different age groups playing at the same time. He mainly coached football, but also coached basketball, baseball, and even soccer. Over the years he treated all kids the same, no matter their ability.
Some of the happiest times were time spent in McMullen County visiting with his sister, brother-in-law and their family and friends (always watching old westerns). He also loved to Bar-B-Que for special events in the lives of family and friends. His specialty was brisket which he enjoyed serving to everyone.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother, Norman Edgar Boothe; sisters and husbands Jimmy Dell Mikolajczyk Lawson & Emmett Mikolajczyk Sr., and William Lawson; Bobbie Rae Swaim & Rodney Swaim, Jr.
He was survived by his wife EvaRae Boothe; sons Dustin (Olivia) Boothe, and Clayton (Jill) Boothe; grandchildren Garrett (Kaia) Boothe, Kasey Wade, Paige Boothe, Manuel Cintron, Marcus Cintron and Eoghan Roe Alfarano; great granddaughters May Lynn Boothe and Kynix Wade; many cousins, nephews, and nieces, other loving family members and friends. Visitation will be held on Friday, August 16, 2024 from 5-7 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary. A funeral service with military honors will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2024, a 11 a.m. at McQueeney Baptist Church with the Reverend Dale Jones officiating. A reception will follow. Private interment will be held at a later date.
Serving as pallbearers will be Garrett Boothe, Kasey Wade, Kevin Bowles, Rob Swaim, Marcus Cintron, Manuel Cintron, Justin Boothe, and Rusty Gardiner. Honorary pallbearers will be Murray Swaim, Wayne Swaim, Emmett Mikolajczyk Jr., William Boothe, Billy Boothe, and Bill Langenberg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the McQueeney Baptist Church Building Fund, 201 Schumann Road, McQueeney, Texas 78123.
You are invited to sign the guest book at www.treshewell.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Tres Hewell Mortuary, 165 Tor Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155, 830-549-5912.

There’s a nationwide recall of the brands’ chocolate bars, cones and gummies, after over a hundred people in 28 states became sick. Third Person Dies In Connection To Listeria Outbreak
(Undated) -- A third person has died in Viriginia in connection to a multi-state listeria outbreak found in Boars Head deli meat. New Jersey’s Holy Name Medical Center’s Chief Infectious Disease Doctor Suraj Kumar Saggar isn’t sure how long it will take for listeria to work its way out of the food chain, explaining its not clear where in the supply chain the disease is coming from. Dr. Saggar says listeria can survive refrigeration, which is why it’s important to wash foods, even organic foods. Saggar underscores that many people will recover from listeria, adding sensitive groups include young children and older adults.
One In Four Intimate Partner Murder-Suicides Involved Someone Banned From Owning Guns
(Washington, DC) -- Nearly a quarter of intimate partner murder-suicides are committed by someone banned from owning a gun.
