New school year in Marion ISD brings excitement, growing pains
(Marion) -- The Marion ISD today officially kicks off its new school year. The 2024-25 school year will bring with it a number of changes for the new year, including more construction work and rising enrollments at each campus.
Marion ISD Superindent Don Beck says they want everyone to practice a little bit of patience on these first few days of school.
“This will be a little bit more unique than other (years). They always have to pack their patience on the first couple days of school, with all the newness and everybody new moving in and all that good stuff. This year, we have a lot of construction going on, and the things will be a little bit different, with traffic being re-routed, especially at the secondary campuses. But really and truly (we want people) just to be aware of all the signs that are up, and follow the directions from the police officers and the traffic signs and administrators,” said Beck.
He says if people are prepared for some of these changes it will help them get students to and from school.

Navarro ISD officials provide helpful information to jumpstart coming school year
(Seguin) -- The new school year officially begins on Wednesday for Navarro ISD students, but NISD officials say the preparations for that first day should actually start now.
Navarro ISD Superintendent Mandy Epley says they want to start by reminding students to watch their bed times.
“Well, it’s important to remember that kids have been on some unusual schedules this summer. So, starting this week, it’s important to start getting into that routine of getting into bed early, eating well and being ready for that early start time,” said Epley.
Epley says there are also some bell schedule changes on tap for some
Darren Dunn
Navarro ISD students this year. She says the changes will hopefully help making getting kids to school a little bit easier each day.
“For the first time in Navarro’s history, we will be going to a staggered start with our elementary and intermediate (schools) opening their doors at 6:45 (a.m.), with the first bell at 7:30 (a.m.) and dismissal at 3:05 (p.m.). Our junior high and high schools will have their study hall available at 7 a.m. in the junior high cafeteria, with the main doors for both campuses opening at 8 a.m., and our instructional day going from 8:35 (a.m.) to 4:10 (p.m.),” said Epley.
With schools set to open on Wednesday in the Navarro ISD,
Epley says the district has made a number of resources available to students, parents and the community.
“We have a lot of great information on our website, as well as on our Facebook page to help families be prepared for transportation services (and) their school supply lists,” said Epley.
Much like the Marion ISD, schools in the Navarro ISD are growing at a rapid pace. We’ll take a look at NISD’s enrollment numbers and discuss other plans for its first day of school on Wednesday. More helpful information is also currently available on the Navarro ISD’s website, nisd.us.
Math Grades Below Pre-COVID
(Austin) -- Kids across Texas are going back to school this week. And, this year, there is a focus on math, because math standardized test scores have plummeted. Texas Education Agency Commissioner Mike Morath says they have to do more to bolster those scores during the new school year.
“Covid disruption, or course, caused a massive decline in mathematics achievement. But you can see in the most recent year, recovery has essentially stalled out,” said Morath.
Morath says pulling kids out of the slump that started with COVID is something they have to do. He says some of the gains that were made prior to the pandemic have not come back. The scores largely started to fall when kids were sent home.
“We are still well below our pre-Covid levels of mathematics proficiency,” said Morath.
Morath says the TEA has a plan to improve those scores. He says they want to focus on math in the earliest grades to start closing the gap.
“Problems in mathematics manifest because students
Marion, continued.
“We should have a smooth transition. It’s going to take a couple days to get reacquainted to a new set of traffic patterns, that’s for sure,” said Beck.
The growing pains aren’t just being caused by the ongoing construction in and around Marion schools. Dr. Beck says they are also experiencing rapid growth across the district, with their enrollment growing significantly this year.
“From last August to this August, we’ve increased about 180 students. And so, for us, that’s quite a gain. It’s about a 12, 13, or 14 percent gain from one year to the next. So, we are definitely experiencing some of that. We’ve been able to fill all the spots we need to with staff, and luckily, we have the building space to accommodate all that. It’s just trying to get adjusted to the new traffic patterns will probably be the biggest issues. There will be more cars here than normal, and that’s what we’re going to be working on,” said Beck.
Beck says the back-to-school transition isn’t just something for the teachers and students to worry about.
have not actually memorized the (multiplication) times tables, and those chickens come home to roost by the time you get to algebra,” said Morath.
Morath says this is a big deal for the state’s public education students. He says proficiency in mathematics is directly linked to how much a person will earn once they become an adult. The latest scores show that, while math has not returned to pre-COVID levels, reading levels continue to rise.
He says there will be increased traffic before and after school each day, and motorists also need to remember that those school zones will once again be active. He says it’s important to slow down when you get to those areas.
“Especially right around the schools, they drop the speed limit down considerably. Parents just need to be mindful of that. I’m sure the cops will be out checking those (speeds) to keep kids safe as they walk across the street because we still have quite a few walkers. Hopefully people will be mindful of that and take their time getting in and out of school, and plan plenty of time for the first day,” said Beck.
A new school year always brings with it a number of challenges, but Beck says his staff is excited about welcoming kids back to their classrooms.
“The excitement is definitely there. I see it in the staff. We had our convocation last Wednesday and it was great to see the smiles on their faces, and just the preparation. Our mission this year is Mission Possible, and they’re ready to take on the mission of making anything possible for these kids,” said Beck.
Information about bell schedules, the school calendar and more can be found on the Marion ISD’s website, marionisd.net.

Boothe
Samuel Neail Boothe was born at home in the Avant Community of Atascosa County TX on February 15, 1942 to James Thomas and Martha Ophelia (Paul) Boothe. It was said the doctor could not get across the low water crossing because of rain so his father took the tractor and picked up the doctor at the crossing. Sam was raised as the son of a dirt farmer and enjoyed the country life. His maternal grandparents immigrated from Germany and he was very proud of his German heritage.
He attended Christine school, and when they closed, he went to Jourdanton, and later transferred and graduated from Charlotte School all in TX. Many years later he graduated from Eastern Kentucky University.
Sam joined the U.S. Navy in November, 1963. While in the Navy during 1965-1966 he was stationed aboard the USS Forrestal aircraft carrier. During this time, he went to many different countries. (France, Italy, Spain, Greece and Lebanon) While on the Forrestal he was the engineer of the captain’s boat. Sam finished his enlistment in November, 1967.
