Sound the bells: Schools open TODAY in the Navarro ISD

(Seguin) -- The Navarro ISD is starting its new school year off today by welcoming in a record number of students. Navarro ISD Superindent Mandy Epley says the district’s enrollment continues to grow. The growth isn’t a surprise to anyone who’s watched the large number of new homes that have been built in the Navarro ISD.

Epley says they are excited about all of their students -- old and new -- and they are ready to start this new year.

“The growth is continuing to come. We are projected to go from about 2,400 students to 2,697 students this year and we have seen that in our early enrollment figures. We’re seeing about 300 new students to the district. So, we’re working hard to make sure that our staff is prepared and that everybody will have a seat (and) have a teacher. We know the growth is coming. We’ve prepared for that and we’re looking forward to welcoming more people to the Panther Family,” said Epley.

Seguin ISD officials gearing up for Thursday’s first day of school

(Seguin) -- The Seguin ISD held its fall convocation ceremony Friday at the Seguin Coliseum. All district employees were invited to lunch and a special program, which helps the district kick start its new school year. The first day of school in the Seguin ISD is Thursday. Visit seguinisd. net to find out more information about the first day of school. Here are a few of the pictures captured by the district at Friday’s convocation.

State education officials worried about growing number of uncertified teachers levels

(Austin) -- As Texas grows, so does the demand for teachers. But there’s concern that a growing number are not certified by the state.

“Over a third of the 49,000 newly hired teachers last year did not have a teaching certificate. That’s over 16,600 uncertified teachers that we hired last year,” said Kelvey Oeser, of the Texas Education Agency.

Oeser says that the latest data also shows that nontraditional teachers also quit the teaching profession at a faster rate. “After five years, the average retention rate for uncertified teachers is only 39-percent,” said Oeser.

Oeser with the Texas Education Agency says that non-traditional teachers, who come from the business world, also quit the profession at a faster rate. A study by Texas Tech found that certified teachers lead to better

outcomes. It also found that non-certified teachers were more likely to miss signs that a student has a learning disability.

continued.

The growth also means that there were be more cars on the roadway near Navarro schools. Epley says they are staggering start times at some schools to help with the traffic flow, and they have also been sharing maps and other resources with the community to help the traffic flow more smoothly on this first day of school.

“We’ve got some amazing photos of our traffic patterns and we’ve even released a video that shared the rules of the road with buses. Oftentimes in those first couple of weeks as people are figuring things out, maybe trying to take their children in their own vehicles, (and then) changing their mind and going to riding the buses and so forth. It is a lot of congestion as people work things out. But every year by the second week we’re in a good rhythm. It’s important to slow down (and) take a deep breath. We know that everybody is getting back into that routine and and we have a lot of grace for that. So please, yes, be patient, have some grace, communicate with us and we’ll continue to communicate with you. Be safe on the

road and know that we’re ready for you. We’re ready for your students in the classroom,” said Epley.

Epley says staff has been working hard in preparation for today’s start of the new school year. She says they have some exciting plans in place for this year.

“We had an amazing convocation, where we had former students share the impact that their teachers made on them while they attended the Navarro ISD. We’ve welcomed over 70 new staff and everyone is just thrilled and excited to execute that collaborative vision that our community, students and teachers helped to put together last year. We’re ready to put that vision into action. They’ve been meeting all week, not only learning and preparing for your students, but preparing that environment for learning. We all look forward to that first day and that awesome energy of the kids coming out of the cars and the buses -- ready to learn and ready to start the year,” said Epley.

The Navarro ISD is also offering parent resources on things like bell schedules, transportation and food services on the district’s website, nisd.us.

Navarro takes down Cuero and Seguin to start 2024 high school volleyball season

(Geronimo) -- The Navarro Lady Panthers went 2-0 in opening the 2024 volleyball season on Monday night at Navarro High School.

In their first game, Navarro took down rival Cuero in a two hour five-set marathon 17-25, 25-16, 25-17, 23-25, 15-9. In the final match, the Lady Panthers dispatched the Seguin Lady Matadors in four sets 28-26, 25-18, 22-25, 25-16.

Navarro junior Avary Sisak was active as a setter, assisting hitters including senior Morgan Helms and junior Rylee Smith with perfect setups for kills throughout the night. Senior back line player Tegan Harborth covered the court well making several diving digs. And senior Kate Wozniak showed off her all-around game with set-ups, monster kills and a few drop serves that led to a number of Lady Panther points.

Navarro head coach Page Poth said Wozniak was asked to take on a larger role filling in for an injured teammate. Poth

raved about Wozniak’s versatility after their victories.

“We can move her wherever we need her. She’s a great player to have with all the options that we have,” Poth said of Wozniak. “We can move her around and swing-wise, she can score on pretty much anything she gets. Even as a setter that we didn’t plan to have her at,

she still runs an offense and gets us our win.”

The Lady Panthers next play in the Northeast Tournament in San Antonio. District 27-4A rivals Fredericksburg and Davenport will also be in the tourney. Navarro starts tournament play on Friday against San Antonio O’Connor.

Meanwhile, the Seguin Lady Matadors fell in both of their matches. Cuero defeated Seguin 27-25, 25-17, 25-22 in last night’s middle match. Senior Karina Lerma along with sophomores Britlyn Walls and Elli Anderson had strong performances on the night for Seguin.

The Lady Matadors will next play in the John Turner Classic in Pearland which gets underway on Thursday.

(Marion) -- The Marion Lady Bulldogs will get their season underway tonight. Marion will host Canyon Lake. First serve is set for 6 O’clock this evening at Marion High School.

Erythritol Study Shows It Raises Risk Of Blood Clotting

(Cleveland OH) -- A study suggests a common low-calorie sweetener may be riskier for the body than sugar. A Cleveland Clinic trial tested how “erythritol” [[ ur-i-thruh-taal ]] affects cardiovascular risks compared with sugar. The sweetner is used in “keto-friendly” foods, baked goods and candies. Researchers found people who drank glasses of water with erythritol had an increased likelihood of blood clotting than those who drank the normal sugar drink. Experts point out the study size was small and more research needs to be done.

Study

Shows Daily Marijuana

Use Boosts Risk Of Head, Neck Cancers

(Los Angeles, CA) -- A new study shows that daily marijuana use greatly increases the risk of head and neck cancers. Researchers at Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California analyzed millions of medical records. They specifically focused on patients with cannabis use disorder who continue to smoke pot daily even when it triggers serious health issues. They include a three to five times greater likelihood of head and neck cancer. Dr. Barry Boyd of Yale Medical School’s Greenwich Hospital says there are high levels of carcinogens in marijuana that can lead to those cancers.

Pennsylvania Sending Out Xylazine Care Kits (Harrisburg, PA) -- Here’s another sign of just how bad Pennsylvania’s drug problem is: The state is sending thousands of xylazine wound care kits to groups across the state. Xylazine care kits are designed to better treat the infections that people get when they use xylazine to get high. The drug is usually an animal sedative, but it has become popular among drug users. The Pennsylvania Department of Health says it is sending 50 thousand care kits to non-profits and community health departments. The hope is to make the kits available to addicts, who can then prevent infections from becoming deadly.

51-Foot Whale Carcass Washes Ashore in Torrance (Torrance, CA) -- Marine biologists are working to determine the cause of death for a 51-foot fin whale that washed ashore in Torrance. A partial necropsy was performed on the whale carcass, which washed ashore on Saturday night. It was cleared from the beach by lifeguards and wildlife officials on Sunday. The Marine Mammal Center says the whale was in poor health due to bumps on its skin and its thin build. The whale was likely young, as it was not fully grown. Fin whales can grow up to 70 feet long.
