School bell rings for the Seguin ISD

(Seguin) -- Summer officially comes to a close for Seguin ISD students. Today marks the first day of school for the Seguin ISD.

Excited about the upcoming school year is Seguin ISD Superintendent Dr. Veronica Vijil. Dr. Vijil has spent the last couple of weeks welcoming teachers and staff back to school.

Included in that schedule have been teacher trainings, meet the teachers, student/parent orientations plus school ribbon cuttings.

Although her team in the Seguin ISD is ready to go, Dr. Vijil says it will again take the whole village to help ensure that all students are successful.

“My message for parents is that when that I say we stand united, it’s every part of the school community that needs to come together and we know that their children are the most important person in their life and so we want them to advocate for their child. We want them to show up to school functions and we want them to be present in their child’s life when they go home to talk about what happened during the day

and know that they are in good hands. All of the things that we deem important and as priorities such as safety, top education quality, they are still our priorities and I want them to know that we are giving every effort to find the high quality teachers that their children need for high performance. There is so much at stake,” said Dr. Vijil.

Part of the effort to recruit quality teachers is the district’s clear understanding of the many challenges that they are up against.

One example, according to Dr. Vijil is the lingering impact of COVID.

“We can say that COVID is in the rear view mirror but those of us who are in education, those who are parents of children who missed really important years such as kindergarten and first grade, we are going to see the results of that until they graduate from high school. They are catching up. People say ‘oh, COVID is over. We don’t need to worry about that.’ We absolutely in the education business acknowledge to parents, ‘we see it parents. We get it.’ The world has changed,” said Dr. Vijil.

School zones back in action

Seguin PD encouraging drivers to use caution

(Seguin) -- As children head back to school, the Seguin Police Department is calling on everyone to be extra careful in school zones and around school buses to help keep kids safe.

Lt. Mike McCann, of the Seguin PD, says school zones can be chaotic with children walking or biking to school.

“Please make sure that they slow when they are in school zones and be very aware and cognizant and paying attention. Kids don’t always walk where they are supposed to and sometimes they run. All phone usage in school zones is illegal,” said McCann.

McCann says all eyes are also needed on those large yellow school buses.

“Make sure when they see buses that they do not pass a school bus when a yellow or red light is flashing. Even if the school bus is another lane separated by a turn lane, it’s all traffic must still come to a stop. The only time you can pass a school bus when the red light is flashing and their loading or unloading is when there is a physical barrier or divider between the lanes like a patch of grass or a jersey barrier but if all the lanes are connected and somebody can just walk from one side of the road to the other and stay on concrete then all vehicles have to stop when they see the red flashing lights,” said McCann.

In 2023, there were 748 traffic crashes in Texas school zones, resulting in one death and 14 serious injuries. The most common crash causes were speeding, distracted driving and failure to yield the right of way.

McCann says being careful will especially be important these next few weeks as parents work to navigate their way around the various campuses.

“Anytime you are approaching a school zone, beware of your speed and make sure you leave early enough to plan for the congestion. There is going to be a lot of new drivers, new parents dropping off kids, picking up kids and it’s going to be a bit confusing for the first few weeks. Everybody is going to need to be a little bit more patient and know that things will quicken up as everybody gets used to their bus routes and school route,” said McCann.

There were also 11 people killed and 63 seriously injured last year in the 2,523 crashes involving Texas school buses. Driver inattention and speed were also the top contributing factors in those crashes.

McCann says the public should expect a strong presence of law enforcement around the various schools and throughout local streets. He adds that officers won’t hesitate to issue citations as the safety of students is paramount to the Seguin PD.

School, continued.

The first step toward student success, however, is just making sure that kids get to school. Dr. Vijil says there is nothing more important and asks that all families make attendance a priority this upcoming school year.

“I also need to say to the parents that we need your kids at school. We really really really need them at school and you know, COVID again was a time where we did things differently. We are back to school. We are ready. We have so many activities. We’ve got wonderful staff here ready to welcome them. It’s easy to get into a habit. Let’s break those habits and let’s make school a top priority. All together, we can do this,” said Vijil.

Seguin boys force play-in game; Marion

Marion volleyball falls in 2024 season opener

(Marion) -- A young Marion volleyball team battled hard, but ultimately fell to Canyon Lake to open the 2024 season on Tuesday night.

A packed gym at Marion High School saw the Class 4A Canyon Lake Lady Hawks take down the Class 3A Lady Bulldogs in straight sets, 25-11, 25-20, 25-19.

Marion graduated eight seniors from a team that made the playoffs last season. They have a very young team this season with two freshmen in Kelley Williams and Maddie Peavler. They also have four sophomores. Head coach Mellissa Mitchell Schuetz, who is in her third year as the Lady Bulldog head coach, talked about the youth on her squad following the match.

“They’re not afraid to take on a challenge,” Mitchell Schuetz said. “I’ve got two freshmen. I’m sure they were just wicked nervous (tonight), but they did great. Kelley (Williams) is just hammering away doing what she needs to do. (Sophomore) Cambry Dojahn is stepping up.

“All of people don’t expect them to do what they’re doing and the returners have really embraced their role teaching these younger girls, the newcomers on the team. They’re getting them involved and not just, ‘hey you gotta follow us.’”

Marion will next play in the Wimberley TEX-Fest Tournament which gets underway on Thursday. Tonight, the Lady Bulldogs along with student-athletes from the Bulldog football, tennis and cross country teams will be introduced to fans during Meet the Bulldogs at Marion High School. The event will take place on campus at Veterans’ Stadium. Gates open at 6 p.m.
