(Seguin) -- The political races have been set in the city of Seguin. City Secretary Kristin Mueller Monday night released a list of the candidates that have filed for mayor and available city council seats.
The deadline to file for a place on the November 5 ballot was 5 p.m. Monday.
Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen has filed for reelection, and she will be challenged by newcomer Francisco Luciano Herrera.
The District 2 city council race will feature David Eveld and Mario Hernandez.
The District 2 seat is currently vacant following the death of Councilwoman Sonia Mendez earlier this year.
Two candidates will also face off in the District 4 council race.
The candidates include John Carlsson and Ileen Rangel.
Rangel is the wife of current
District 4 Councilman Chris Rangel, who is no longer eligible to run for re-election due to term limits.
A trio of candidates will appear on the ballot for District 6 seat on the Seguin City Council.
Incumbent Monica Carter faces challengers Felix Moreno and Suzanne Wynn.
The only uncontested race will be the District 1 council seat.
Councilman Joe Rea will run unopposed during the November 5 general election.
(Seguin) -- Two races are set, and one remains unresolved in the Seguin ISD.
The school district’s candidate filing deadline ended Monday for individuals interested in serving on the Seguin ISD Board of Trustees.
There are no contested races for the Seguin School Board.
Incumbent Grace Mueller was the only candidate to file for her District 3 seat.
Lisa Burns is the lone candidate
to file for the District 6, which is currently held by Benito “Ben” Amador, who decided not to seek
(Geronimo) -- Several names have been tossed into the hat for available seats on the Navarro ISD Board of Trustees.
Three at-large seats are available on the Navarro School Board. Each seat would have a four-year term.
There's one unexpired term also available for a seat previously held by Trustee Hank Dietert, who resigned earlier this year. This seat would be for the two years remaining on Dietert's term.
Candidates running for the three fullterm positions include Kimberly Jones, Kristen Green, Becki Stephenson, Kyle Hunter, Melissa Sartain, Megan Ossinger, Clint Scheib and Jared Gallini.
Candidates seeking to fill the twoyear unexpired term include Russell Trotti, Jacob Coppedge, Matthew Reed and Joel Frederick.
Navarro ISD voters will choose their top candidates during the November 5 general election.
reelection.
In District 1, the future of that seat remains unclear. Incumbent Carl Jenkins, who serves as the board’s vice-president, did not file for reelection.
District officials say due to no one filing for the seat, the school board will now have the responsibility of appointing a trustee to the seat within the next 180 days. Jenkins’ term runs through the November election period.
(Marion) -- Those looking to secure a spot on the city council ballot for the city of Marion have a couple of more days in which to do so.
The extra time is being provided due to the time and date in which the election was ordered by the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court.
That's according to Guadalupe County Elections Administrator Lisa Hayes.
As reported last month, the county was obligated by law to order the election after the city missed its opportunity to call its own election in May and it received a petition from voters in Marion.
According to the elections office, Guadalupe County is required by the local government code section to hold an Election under Special Circumstances to fill the five vacant Alderman positions for the City of Marion.
The city for months has operated bare bones following resignations and reported turmoil among city leaders and employees.
Due to the special circumstances, the county's elections office is not only handling the election, but handling the filing which ends at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
The applications are available on the elections office website, or they can be picked up in their office, located at 215 S. Milam in Seguin.
Those who meet this Thursday's deadline will secure a spot on Marion's Nov. 5 special election ballot.

(Seguin) -- Powder X-ray diffractometer. To the untrained ear, it sounds like something a super villain would wield in a comic book showdown. But in reality, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) is one of the most utilized tools in materials science and engineering. And thanks to a grant from the National Science Foundation, Texas Lutheran University will soon have the technology.
“An X-ray diffractometer shines X-rays on a powdersolid sample,” explains Associate Professor and Chemistry Department Chair Alison Bray. “The pattern of how the X-rays are diffracted (bent) by interacting with the powder sample can give us insight into the atomic structure of the material. This is key for exciting and growing fields like materials science. It’s widely used in all fields related to chemistry including geology, environmental science, materials science, engineering, and biology.”
The grant to secure funding for the diffractometer was led by Assistant Chemistry Professor Dr. Corey Thompson, acting as Principal Investigator (PI), with Bray as co-PI. The two collaborated with Dr. Toni Sauncy, Physics Department Chair. “I am especially thrilled that
we did this as a joint effort between the two departments,” says Bray. “Stronger together.”
Why is the acquisition of the X-ray diffractometer so important? Because next-generation materials are crucial for advancing science and solving economic concerns. And because adding a tool of this caliber to TLU’s chemistry and physics lab experiences for freshmen through seniors will allow for next-level learning. “Materials science and working with solid samples are key to growing industries including energy production,” says Bray. “So, acquiring this tool for our students to get hands-on experience will give them an extra edge as they look ahead into the job market.”
As a primarily undergraduate, Hispanic-serving institution, TLU is dedicated to providing high-quality education and training to its students. This instrument will bring an exciting new and critically relevant topic to intermediate and advanced physics and chemistry lab offerings that will better prepare graduates for a wide range of opportunities that meet the needs of an expanded technological workforce.

Mikel Lawrence Haug, 67, of Seguin, passed away peacefully in hospice care on Thursday, August 1, 2024. He was born on January 28, 1957, to Lawrence Ottmer and Eva Gordon Haug of Seguin. Mike was a 1975 graduate of Seguin High School and the Matador Marching Band and Jazz Band. He is preceded in death by his parents.
Mike was a member of Emanuel’s Lutheran Church where he was Baptized, Confirmed, and married in 1985 to Deborah “Deb” Floyd Haug. After nine years with the USPS, he earned a degree in Mathematics from Southwest Texas State (1993) and began his career in teaching. Mike earned his master’s degree in 2002 at Texas A&M University in College Station.
Mike was a loyal Aggie who “bled deep maroon” and let everyone know it. One of his favorite pastimes was following his stepson’s career in the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band and Corps of Cadets and enjoying his season tickets to the football games.
An avid outdoorsman, Mike said he “loved” to hunt, but he “lived” to fish and cherished his time with his family fishing at Big Shells on Padre Island and fished Costa Rica in 2022. His hunts took him around Texas and Colorado and he enjoyed many years hunting on a small family ranch in Sanderson, Texas. He was in the Explorers in his youth and enjoyed hiking, kayaking and working in the garden.
Mike grew up dancing. He square danced with the Happy Soles in Seguin and the Fire on the Mountain Cloggers of San Antonio where he travelled to Venezuela to teach folk dancing to school children. He danced in the movie, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, and on Hee Haw.
Teaching and reaching students was Mike’s passion for thirty-one years first at Saegert Middle School and then Randolph High School on RAFB in
San Antonio where he taught high school math for twenty-five years. Mike was a master at encouraging his students and instilling a love of mathematics in them. His students loved him and proudly took to his assigned moniker of “slackers” in his Algebra and AP Calculus classrooms. Mike developed his lessons to teach “real life” math and practical applications of the study of mathematics. He held high expectations for all of his students and was in the classroom routinely twelve hours each day to help them achieve those expectations. He was so proud of them. He was published in Mathematics Teacher, a professional journal for math educators and taught a precalculus course for the University of Texas at Austin at Randolph High School, though he hid his burnt orange faculty ID card in the back of his wallet!
Mike will be remembered for his incredibly positive attitude, kind nature, quick and sarcastic sense of humor, and his unfailing ability to endure any obstacles life threw at him without complaint. He is survived by his wife, Deb, stepson Onni Hynninen of Seguin, two sisters, Tammy Marshall (Kevin) of Floresville and Heidi Milgrim (Steve) of Dumphries, Va., his treasured grandchildren, Murphy and Sara, and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at 1 p.m. at Emanuel’s Lutheran Church, 206 N. Travis St. in Seguin.

UN Secretary General Calls For Ceasefire In Gaza To Fight Polio (Gaza City) -- The United Nations Secretary-General is calling for a weeklong ceasefire in Gaza to prevent a polio outbreak. The UN said it’s poised to launch a polio vaccination effort in Gaza for children under the age of ten. The polio virus has been found in wastewater samples in the central part of the Gaza Strip and in southern Gaza. Guterres said it’s “impossible to conduct a polio vaccination campaign with war raging all over.” Palestinian health officials announced the first case of polio in a ten-month-old child on Friday. In a statement, Hamas said it supported the request for a seven-day truce for vaccinations.

(Cleveland, OH) -- If your child is anxious about going back to school, he or she is not alone and there are ways to ease those jitters. Dr. Vanessa Jensen, a child psychologist at theCleveland Clinic, says back-to school anxiety is common among young kids and the best way to help is to not feed into it by asking, “are you worried about this year?” She says a parentshould never downplay a child’s worries but instead say, “we’ll get through it together.” However, if your child regularly makes excuses for not going to school, it’s important to speak to a teacher, guidance counselor or mental health professional.
