The wait is over, Seguin scores a future Chick-fil-A restaurant

(Seguin) -- A popular chicken restaurant is finally making its way into the Seguin area.

The Seguin City Council on Tuesday approved a pair of agreements with Chick-fil-A that will allow the fast-food eatery to break ground sometime next year. The restaurant will be built near the corner of the I-10 Access Road and CH Matthies Drive, next door to Bill Miller’s Bar-B-Q.

The city formally announced the agreement in a post that was shared on social media. The video featured Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen flanked by council members Jason Biesenbach and Bill Keller. Dodgen pretended to be starting a meeting, which was interrupted by someone dressed up like the famous cows from Chick-fil-A’s former ad campaigns. It, of course, was City Manager Steve Parker, who then served up a bunch of goodies from Chick-fil-A.

In that video, folks can hear Mayor Dodgen questioning an interruption at the start of a meeting.

“What’s going on? Sir! No! No! We cannot have livestock in the council chambers. Where is the police officers when you need somebody? Oh my gosh, what’s happening?”

Parker, while placing Chick-fil-A bags in front of council, follows by sharing, “We’ve got

good news!”

The video wraps up with Dodgen announcing the news -- “Oh wow! Seguin, it’s coming!”

The city has been working on this for years, and the community has been clamoring for this almost as long – if not longer. The deal apparently took not only the work of city staff, but also support from the Seguin Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) and the Seguin City Council.

The council approved two agreements. The first called for what is called a Chapter 380 agreement. According to the Texas Comptroller’s Office, a Chapter 380 agreement allows a taxing body, like the city of Seguin, to negotiate sales tax incentives from a developer in return for the project meeting certain benchmarks. The second item approved by the council spelled out those benchmarks, which were included in a performance agreement. The full details included in both agreements were not immediately made available.

Chick-fil-A is known for its quality food and high levels of customer service. The groundbreaking is expected to take place next year. Chick-fil-A, pg. 3

SHS welcomes the Mightiest Matador

Squirrel trail art project expands to Matador Stadium

(Seguin) -- There’s something new and “Mighty” at Seguin High School.

The first regular season football game hasn’t even been played yet and already, there’s a big win over at Matador Stadium.

With the help of the Matador Band and high school cheerleaders, crowds gathered and cheered Monday afternoon as “Mighty” the Squirrel was unveiled just outside the stadium gates at Seguin High School.

Mighty” marks the 14th threefoot-tall concrete statue to be unveiled as part of the City of Seguin’s Squirrel Trail Program.

Unveiling the new signature art project outside the stadium were donors Donny and Cathy Beicker.

The Beicker’s who unofficially might just be the biggest supporters of anything Matador say they didn’t hesitate in participating in the program. In fact, Beicker says she had already been leaning toward something like this even before learning about the city-wide art project in Seguin.

“My daughter-in-law in Fredericksburg had put Mockingbirds all around Fredericksburg and I said ‘well, then I need to come up with something.’ Then, I went to Kyle (Kramm, City of Seguin Main Street and CVB director) and he said, we’ve got the squirrel thing going on’ and I said perfect, you’ve done all the leg work! So just for Donny and I, it had to be at the high school somewhere because we both graduated from here and we go to everything here and we are still so connected here so it had to be here and to be bold enough to put it right in front of the stadium instead of on the street is making a statement of saying that’s who we are. We aren’t just driving by the school. We are involved

in the school. So, I’m just thrilled,” said Beicker.

Of course, as part of the project, donors not only have to purchase the squirrel, but they have to also find their own artist to come up with a creative idea. The one thing that the Beicker’s requested was that “Mighty” be created by students. That task was eventually put into the hands of the SHS Art Class members under the direction of Art Teacher Patricia Bernaden.

As for the final reveal, Cathy said she couldn’t have been more excited.

“The kids were just so creative, and I was just on the outside the whole time. Then, they had to turn in a drawing for their plan and that’s the first glimmer I got of what their idea was, and I was like ‘that is fabulous.’ And then you look at it and it is such a good idea. I hope it will be a nice attraction that kids will want to take pictures with it and for people walking into the stadium to know that the Squirrel Trail Program is 14 squirrels now and maybe others will jump on board, and we will have more to come,”

said Beicker.

While “Mighty” signifies all students, Cathy said there was one thing at the very end that she felt needed to be personalized.

“When I finally saw what it was, and it was a letter jacket, and I thought it ought to have a football number right? And so, I knew Donny’s number because we dated in high school and I knew his number and when I look at it, it takes me back to high school,” said Beicker.

While Donny isn’t surprised that his wife still remembers his football number all these 50 plus years later, he is still appreciative for the tribute as well as the recognition of all the other numerous adventures that exist for students at SHS.

“It is pretty cool. It was a good idea. I’ll know that there is still a part of me there. It’s nice. The patches that they put on there make it more personal to the school. The people who (painted) it did a very good job,” said Donny.

Chick-fil-A, continued.

City officials say they don’t have a store opening date at this time, but that should be determined over the coming months as they move forward with the real estate and development process.

Meanwhile, reaction to the news was swift on social media. Folks were saying things like “best news ever” and “happy to know we will be getting a business with first-class customer service and great food also.”

There’s been a steady call over the years for more retail and restaurant developments to occur in Seguin. Chick-fil-A

Squirrel, continued.

Donny’s #12 jersey number is only one of the many fine details that folks will find on the squirrel project.

Among those ensuring that every inch of “Mighty” was perfect with all of these details was Art student Janaya Williams. Even though she had eyes on the project all throughout, she says seeing all their work come together in the end was just amazing.

“I was like ‘wow’ okay, we got to this point. We started off with just a white canvas. There was nothing there and then we added shading and brought everything together into one. I would like for them to see the color contrast and how we used the gold and yellow and the grays to make everything pop out and stand out and match the school colors. It was like a big reveal because personally, I didn’t get to see the last thing because I wasn’t there but it’s nice seeing it all put together finally,” said Williams.

It might not have been, however, until this week’s public reveal that the high school students really began to understand the magnitude of their work – work that will forever remain “in sight” at their one-day alma mater. At least that’s according to Sophomore Art Student Sarah Elliott.

“It was very much a team effort – multiple people worked on this squirrel at the same time and at different times. It was really fun. I can speak for the Art Club because Art Club along with some other students (worked on the project). It was really fun and an exciting experience. I didn’t realize that it would be as big as this. So, I’m actually really happy and proud of this thing because art doesn’t get as much recognition and

would represent yet be another player being added to the growth that’s occurring near the intersection of Interstate 10 and Highway 46. Over the last couple of years, Burger King, Chicken Express, Taco Bell and Domino’s Pizza have all opened up in that area. They joined Whataburger, JackIn-The-Box, Subway, McDonald’s, Bill Miller’s and Garcia’s Mexican Restaurant that are already located in that area.

The SEDC’s Facebook page posted that “our community has long awaited this project, and we are ecstatic to finally announce its reality. We can’t wait to see the positive impact it will have on our local economy and the new opportunities it will create.”

so this was really fun,” said Elliott.

Luckily for the students, their Art Teacher, Mrs. Bernaden had a clear idea of this community driven request and says she is proud of her students and their ability to take on the assignment.

“Honestly, I was really grateful for the opportunity just because I knew how big of a project the Squirrel Trail was in the city of Seguin. I know I recognize the squirrels around town. I like looking at them. I like seeing them. So, the thought that our squirrel was going to bring that same kind of joy to people was kind of heartwarming and I was 110 percent about it,” said Bernaden.

Although the new baseball/ softball complex was her initial plan to host the squirrel, Cathy says she can’t help but thank Sean Hoffmann,

former public information officer, for suggesting that it be at Matador Stadium. She says after searching for the right location, outside the ticket booth provides plenty of exposure to the public.

“I’m hoping other schools in the district will get on board and say, we need something like that at our school. I just feel that it is something that people will take notice of, and this facility is so fabulous, and our high school is so fabulous so I’m proud to have come from here and I’m proud to at least have marked it with an art piece. And as much as I like sports, I like drama, and I like art. I like all that stuff too,” said Beicker.

Those interested in also jumping on the Squirrel Trail bandwagon are encouraged to contact the Seguin Main Street office at 830-401-2448.

Bulldogs Tabbed Second in SCAC Preseason Coaches Poll

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran women’s soccer was selected as the preseason No. 2 team in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) in a poll of the league’s coaches released Tuesday afternoon.

The Bulldogs selection as the preseason second-place team in the league comes after the arrival of three new programs to the conference. Trinity stands as the preseason favorite to take home the conference’s regular season crown, having done so eight of the last nine seasons. The league’s 2023 conference tournament runner-up in Southwestern and conference newcomer, McMurry, sit in third and fourth respectively. Another conference newcomer, Concordia (TX), and St. Thomas round out the top half of the conference’s preseason poll.

Texas Lutheran returns to the pitch

following a 9-5-4 season in 2023 that saw the Bulldogs claim second place in the conference in the regular season and match the program record set a season ago for conference winning percentage (.786).

The Bulldogs return 14 letterwinners from last year’s roster, welcoming a quartet of

transfers and seven freshmen to round out the 27-woman roster for the 2024 campaign.

The Bulldogs, under the direction of third-year head coach Kerwin Johnson, kick off the 2024 season with a top 25 matchup at Gustafson Field. Texas Lutheran squares off against the No. 18 Hardin-Simmons Cowgirls in a 6 PM kick on TLU+ on August 30. The contest will serve as the first home regular season contest for Texas Lutheran Athletics in 2024.

Haug

Mikel Lawrence Haug, 67, of Seguin, passed away peacefully in hospice care on Thursday, August 1, 2024. He was born on January 28, 1957, to Lawrence Ottmer and Eva Gordon Haug of Seguin. Mike was a 1975 graduate of Seguin High School and the Matador Marching Band and Jazz Band. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Mike was a member of Emanuel’s Lutheran Church where he was Baptized, Confirmed, and married in 1985 to Deborah “Deb” Floyd Haug. After nine years with the USPS, he earned a degree in Mathematics from Southwest Texas State (1993) and began his career in teaching. Mike earned his master’s degree in 2002 at Texas A&M University in College Station.

Mike was a loyal Aggie who “bled deep maroon” and let everyone know it. One of his favorite pastimes was following his stepson’s career in the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band and Corps of Cadets and enjoying his season tickets to the football games.

An avid outdoorsman, Mike said he “loved” to hunt, but he “lived” to fish and cherished his time with his family fishing at Big Shells on Padre Island and fished Costa Rica in 2022. His hunts took him around Texas and Colorado and he enjoyed many years hunting on a small family ranch in Sanderson, Texas. He was in the Explorers in his youth and enjoyed hiking, kayaking and working in the garden.

Mike grew up dancing. He square danced with the Happy Soles in Seguin and the Fire on the Mountain Cloggers of San Antonio where he travelled to Venezuela to teach folk dancing to school children. He danced in the movie, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, and on Hee Haw.

Teaching and reaching students was Mike’s passion for thirty-one years first at Saegert Middle School and then Randolph High School on RAFB in

San Antonio where he taught high school math for twenty-five years. Mike was a master at encouraging his students and instilling a love of mathematics in them. His students loved him and proudly took to his assigned moniker of “slackers” in his Algebra and AP Calculus classrooms. Mike developed his lessons to teach “real life” math and practical applications of the study of mathematics. He held high expectations for all of his students and was in the classroom routinely twelve hours each day to help them achieve those expectations. He was so proud of them. He was published in Mathematics Teacher, a professional journal for math educators and taught a precalculus course for the University of Texas at Austin at Randolph High School, though he hid his burnt orange faculty ID card in the back of his wallet!

Mike will be remembered for his incredibly positive attitude, kind nature, quick and sarcastic sense of humor, and his unfailing ability to endure any obstacles life threw at him without complaint. He is survived by his wife, Deb, stepson Onni Hynninen of Seguin, two sisters, Tammy Marshall (Kevin) of Floresville and Heidi Milgrim (Steve) of Dumphries, Va., his treasured grandchildren, Murphy and Sara, and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at 1 p.m. at Emanuel’s Lutheran Church, 206 N. Travis St. in Seguin.

The family invites everyone to a reception immediately following the service in the church Fellowship Hall to reminisce and honor the life of Mike.

Mpox Virus Mutates, Spreads Quickly

(Houston, TX) -- Mpox is spreading from Africa to Europe, triggering a global warning from the World Health Organization. Experts worry that the virus, which has killed more than five-hundred people and sickened nearly 15-thousand, will be coming here next. Infectious disease expert Dr. Peter Hotez of Baylor College of Medicine says Mpox is spread through close contact with open wounds but some doctors worry that it could become airborne. The good news, he says, is that there are vaccines that work, so Dr. Hotez is calling for a national vaccination campaign among those most at risk including immunocompromised patients, pregnant women and the LGBTQ+ community.

Doctor Explains Why Mosquitoes Bite Some People More Than Others

(Cleveland, OH) -- On this World Mosquito Day, it might be worth noting that these insects are definitely attracted to some of us more than others. Dr. Christopher Bazzolli of the Cleveland Clinic says it has to do with the body heat and carbon dioxide we give off, but that’s not all. He says the odor we emit is also a factor and since that’s based in genetics, there’s not much we can do about that. What we can control, he says, is our lifestyle and environment. Dr. Bazzoli recommends using mosquito repellent, wearing loose clothes, avoiding standing water, drinking less alcohol and applying anti-itch cream if you’re bitten to reduce the risk of infection.

Chicken, Cold Cuts Still Contain Fats And Sugars

(Columbus, OH) -- Food that people think of as healthy may contain hidden amounts of saturated fats and sugars. A study out of The Ohio State University found that foods like chicken breast and seafood still have some amounts and not knowing could make it difficult to limit fat and sugar to the recommended ten percent of daily calorie intake. Top sources of fats and sugar were from the obvious suspects like cheese and soft drinks. But less-obvious sources included cold cuts, no-dairy creamer, energy drinks and ketchup.

Study: Pesticides Remain On Fruit After Washing

(Undated) -- A new study finds that pesticides remain on fruit even after a thorough washing. Washing is not enough to remove residues from certain chemicals. Scientists suggest peeling fruit as the best way to ensure a chemical-free treat. Still, scientists say, in trace amounts, most, if not all, of the pesticides used by farmers are not harmful to humans. The study is published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.
