Reading hits the outdoors

Community celebrates unveiling of first StoryWalks®

(Seguin) – You’re invited to come out, take a walk and enjoy a great story. Thanks to a collaborative effort initiated by the Seguin ISD, the community this week celebrated the public installation of the new #SeguinReads StoryWalks® The Story Walk consists of 17 reading boards that have been placed along the walking trail outside of the Seguin Public Library.

The public installation was the idea of Seguin ISD’s Lead Librarian, Jackie Silvius. That idea was then made possible thanks to a grant awarded to her last year by the Seguin Education Foundation (SEF).

Helping to piece the project all together was the Seguin High School’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) program. Under the direction of their teacher Jason Rice, students built the wooden book stands that help safeguard the large book pages.

During the ribbon cutting ceremony at the public library, Silvius

couldn’t help but get emotional when talking about the team effort and countless hours that went behind making this project possible.

“It feels so amazing to have so much support from so many groups in town and as soon as I expressed the desire to have this in our community, everybody jumped on board. I didn’t have to convince anybody, and I don’t think you get that everywhere and it just feels real good,” said Silvius.

Silvius also couldn’t help but turn to the large number of Seguin High School Matador Band members who were on hand to provide music for the celebration. She says it’s because of them – the kids – that the community has come together.

“I first learned about it at a summer conference and as soon as I heard of the idea, I knew that it would be good for our community and I believe the librarian that started it there, she saw the effect it had on her community,” said Silvius.

Seguin ISD announces new director of communications

(Seguin) -- There is a new person who will be sharing the stories of the Seguin ISD. The school district is announcing Emily Allen to its staff. Allen is the new Seguin ISD director of communications. Allen replaces Sean Hoffmann who for years served in that role.

Having come on board just days before the start of school, Allen has had no time to get her feet wet and has already covered a record number of events this fall. As a former executive producer at KSAT 12 in San Antonio, Allen brings 13 years of experience to the local school district.

Although she has lived in San Antonio, Allen says she is no stranger to Seguin and looks forward to sharing the district’s stories while also keeping families and the community on top of district news.

“I’m not from Seguin directly. I’ve spent every summer here as a kid dating back to 1998, so I feel very invested in the Seguin community and with that comes the desire to tell the stories of our kids and of our staff and all the good things that they are doing. I think there are so many positive stories to be told across Seguin ISD at our campuses and

the things that are to come so I’m really excited to share those with the Seguin ISD community and even beyond. I think our students and our staff are deserving of certain recognitions, but you can’t get that recognition unless you are shouting that story to the world so that’s really the part I hope to play here,” said Allen.

Allen was introduced to the Seguin community during Tuesday’s night’s meeting of the Seguin ISD Board of Trustees.

Stories, continued.

The grant that was awarded will go towards funding three StoryWalks in Seguin. Of course, the Seguin Public Library is the first location to host the project.

Hannah Farmer, the assistant director at the Seguin Public Library, says the city is thrilled to be a partner with the Seguin ISD.

“Oh, I was thrilled. This has been something that I’ve wanted to bring to the trail especially when the new trail opened, the walk that goes all the way to Starcke Park. This is the perfect location for something like a Story Walk and when I heard about the Story Walk project, I knew that our library was the perfect setting. It’s just very difficult to do it on your own. So, when Jackie Silvius approached the library and the parks department, I knew that this was the time --things coming together and people coming together to help make it happen as a collaboration and so I was really excited,” said Farmer.

“This is a School” by John Schu

is the first featured book for the StoryWalk.

Farmer says although they are children’s books, they are great stories for any age.

“It’s really nice for a short little walk especially for little legs. When you are thinking about the ages 0-5 group, you really want to build early literacy and even up to second, third grade – these are picture books that can be enjoyed by everybody, and I love this selection for book #1,” said Silvius.

Farmer says the Seguin ISD has done an incredible job promoting its #Seguin Reads Program and looks forward to continuing that momentum along the trail.

“At first, every month (we will rotate out books) because that will go along with the Seguin Reads Program because the schools pick “One Book, One District” and all the schools read the same book for that month and do programs around that book. So, this would correspond to those books that the Seguin ISD (features). In the future, maybe quarterly (rotate out) but it’s

flexible. That’s the main thing,” said Farmer.

Seguin ISD Superintendent Dr. Veronica Vijil says the installation of this first #Seguin Reads Story Walk is yet another a reminder on the importance of reading.

“Jackie’s idea to bring the StoryWalks® program to Seguin will benefit children and families for years,” said Dr. Vijil. “Seguin ISD is proud to have a part in this project, and we are very excited there are two additional StoryWalks® in the works.”

The two remaining StoryWalks® are planned for installation along the walking trails at Bauer Park and Park West.

Also helping to bring the project to reality is Pecantown Books & Brews. The local bookstore has agreed to sponsor the books for this first year.

The #SeguinReads StoryWalk® is free and open to the public. The start of the reading begins outside of the Seguin Public Library right next door to Curiosity, one of the city’s Squirrels in its Squirrel Trail Program.

Garrison

Henry “Hank” Worth Garrison, age 87 of Seguin, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2024. He was born November 14, 1936, in Boxelder, Texas to Onvie Leo (Coats) and Henry Otto (Ottie) Garrison.

His family had very hard times when Hank was a child after the depression, and they struggled as farmers. He picked cotton by his mother’s side as a very young child and learned patience, discipline, and tenacity. He learned these qualities from his beloved mother, kindness, fairness, humility and honesty.

After high school he received his license as an X-Ray Technician from Parkland Hospital School of Radiology. He joined the Army National Guard in 1958 and was called to active duty in 1961 to assist after the impact of Hurricane Carla along the Texas coast at Port Mansfield.

During high school he met his friend, Don Powell’s youngest sister, Helen Marie Powell. Many years later their paths crossed, and she was all grown up. Then the magic began. They married June 4, 1960, at First Baptist Church in Texarkana, TX. They had two children, Janyce Marie (Kester) and Sean Patrick Coats Garrison and resided in San Antonio, TX for 37 years. He adored his family and worked diligently to provide the very best for them.

Hank retired in 2002 after a 37-year career in medical sales. He enjoyed interacting with the staff in doctors’ offices and developed many friends from San Antonio to the Rio Grande Valley, Corpus Christi to El Paso. He also was a highly motivated businessman, flipping houses during the 70’s and 80’s. After that, he began investing in multiple rental properties. His tenants loved him as he was kind, compassionate and more than once would overlook a missed rental payment. He was quick to take care of repairs and always showed respect for them and for their needs.

In 1997, Hank and Helen moved from San Antonio to Seguin, TX to embark on their next adventure. Hank loved the outdoors and discovered his dream property along the Guadalupe River. He worked tirelessly to make it special for his family. He hunted and fished often, teaching his daughter,

son and four grandsons to love the same. He taught them to clean a deer or the fish they caught, then enjoy eating their bounty. He was an avid gardener growing a multitude of produce on his beloved land. He enjoyed playing in the lake with his family all day while he had something smoking on the grill for dinner in the evening. Kids, dogs, whoever, were always welcome. Of course, they fished.

He volunteered at his beloved church, First Methodist Church, Seguin, helping with grounds upkeep for many years until age 80. He worked in the Pumpkin Patch and served on the Trustees Committee along with other committees. He attended Sunday School, the 8:00 sanctuary service, the 10:30 Seasons Service and Wednesday Bible Study.

He is preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Cornelia Sipes and husband Johnnie, and Lenora White and husband, Tommy, and his niece Sheri Thompson.

Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years, Helen M. Garrison; daughter, Marie Kester and husband Kent; son, Sean Garrison and wife Tammy; grandchildren, Kyle Kester and wife Andrea, Grey Kester and wife Kaleigh, Logan Garrison and Jacob Garrison; great grandchildren, Valory Kester and Ryker Kester; other loving family members and many friends.

The family would like to thank the staff, Preston and Jenna at Mercy House in New Braunfels, TX. and especially the caregivers Monica, Julie, Ashley, BiBi, Linda, Veronica, Desiree, Rosalie, Charlene and many others for their loving care during his final weeks. We also are grateful for Tiffany, Gilbert, Brandi and chaplain, Alvie from Heart of Texas Hospice for their guidance during this difficult time. You all are so very appreciated.

A memorial service celebrating Hank’s life will be held on Sunday, September 1, 2024, at First Methodist Church in Seguin at 2:00 p.m. with the Reverend Ray Perales officiating. A reception will follow in Hierholzer Hall. Private interment will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Methodist Church, 710 N. Austin, Seguin, Texas, 78155.

You are invited to sign the guest book at www.tresehewell.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Tres Hewell Mortuary, 165 Tor Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155, 830-549-5912.

Providing DIRECT funding and resources to the LOCAL workforce

Many people think of Workforce Solutions Alamo (WSA) as the place to go when someone loses a job. While we do assist with unemployment needs, a large part of what we do is direct funding and resources toward workforce development services throughout our area, which includes Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar, Comal, Frio, Gillespie, Guadalupe, Karnes, Kendall, Kerr, McMullen, Medina and Wilson Counties.

One way we do that is through our Local Plan. The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) requires us to set priorities to oversee the workforce development system in this region. The Local Plan is a comprehensive 4-year guide that analyzes the local workforce development area and provides specific detail related to the WSA strategy to meet the economic and employment needs of the area’s job seekers and employers.

This plan is developed in cooperation with local community stakeholders including elected officials, area employers, education and

training partners, community-based organizations, and individuals who are the recipients of services provided by Workforce Solutions Alamo. Through October, we are hosting Local Plan meetings in your community to gather your thoughts and ideas. We’re also keeping our career centers open after hours on selected dates so you can visit with our staff and see firsthand how we can help with your career needs.

Our centers serve as a place where job seekers can find employment information, career development training opportunities, and other life essential support such as childcare services. Whether you need a computer to fill out an application, want to explore training opportunities or get resume advice, our team is ready to help connect employers and employees.

We’ve also worked to make sure these centers are located near you. Call (210) 224-HELP (4357) or go to workforcesolutionsalamo.org to find the closest location.
