Counseling services discontinued in Seguin
Guadalupe Valley Christian Counseling Center closes doors
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) – After almost 30 years of serving area residents, the Guadalupe Valley Christian Counseling Center (GVCCC) has closed its doors.
News of the Christian based non-profit’s decision to end affordable counseling services was recently announced to the community.
Explaining more behind the decision is Pastor Marcus Bigott of Emanuel’s Lutheran Church. Bigott, who serves as the board chairman for the organization, says the decision was not easy and agrees with the rest of the board members that it brings a level of grief to everyone.
“It was something that we had been watching for a while. COVID really took a toll on so many organizations as folks tried to figure out how to be who they needed to be to survive but also to continue the work that they are
doing. We fore started in 1996 by a wonderful group of folks who saw the need to form a partnership and program that was no longer being filled by what was then called Lutheran Social Services and so the Christian Counseling Center was born out of that need. But indeed, following COVID, we continued to struggle with how we continue to meet the mental health needs of our community in a sustainable way and that was just not something that we could figure out in our current model of doing ministry and of doing work. And so, as the board looked at it finances and looked at the ways in which we were trying to operate, we realized that we needed to step back and strategically rethink how we were doing this and what we were going to do going forward because what we were doing is not sustainable,” said Bigott.

Seguin man involved in New Braunfels school crosswalk accident
(New Braunfels) – The rear side door of a Seguin man’s vehicle was struck by a 10-year-old student riding her bike to school Wednesday morning in New Braunfels. New Braunfels Police say while no serious injuries occurred, they are reminding all drivers to slow down and watch for students crossing roadways.
The accident on Wednesday was reported just before 7 a.m. in the 2000 block of FM 1101 at Kowald Lane in front of Freiheit Elementary School.
Officers arrived on scene and found that a black sedan traveling on FM 1101 had come to a stop in the crosswalk on FM 1101 when the female student on a bicycle struck the rear driver’s side door of the vehicle.
The student suffered minor abrasions and was transported by the New Braunfels Fire Department to Resolute Hospital as a precaution. The 65-year-old driver of the sedan was also not injured. At this time, no charges have been filed, but the incident remains under investigation.
Seguin ISD students to wear SMART tags
Students across the district to participate in new program
(Seguin) – Books, backpacks and SMART tags. That’s the list of items that kids will want to have as they head off to school each morning.
Seguin ISD is expanding its use of the SMART tag™ program for the 2024-2025 school year. Middle school students were previously enrolled in the program during the spring 2024 semester. Schools this week have started distributing cards to students who did not previously participate in the program.
SMART tag™ student IDs serve a variety of purposes. One of the featured benefits is that parents can track their child on district
school buses. They can monitor their child’s transportation on district school buses via the Parent Portal on the SMART tag™ Parent App. Parents will receive notifications when their child gets on or off the bus, as well as an alert for when the bus is on its way to their child’s stop.
The district’s Transportation Department will also utilize this program to notify parents of potential delays. The SMART tag™ IDs used for tracking students on district transportation will serve as the student’s school ID, which can also be used in their school cafeteria and library.

Counseling, continued.
Although supported by area churches and committed to faith statements and understandings, the purpose according to the group’s mission statement was never to “preach to its clients.”
Instead, it was to ensure that “clinically trained and experienced professionals utilize the tools of the psychotherapeutic fields to help clients achieve optimal mental, emotional and spiritual health.”
In its announcement to the public, the group states, “what comes next for the counseling center is in the infancy phases of development. We want to maintain our legacy of care and our voice of advocacy regarding the ongoing mental health needs of our community.”
Bigott says although the physical doors to the center might be closed, the doors in the reshaping of the organization’s future remain wide open.
“The board has begun a process of strategic thinking. We first and foremost made sure that our priority, number one, was the clients and those folks who were seeking services from the Christian Counseling Center to make sure that they were cared for in the time of transition and nothing would hinder or cause any kind of a pause in their conversations with their clinicians and priority number two, was the clinicians themselves – the folks that were gifting us and our community with their skills so making sure that pattern of facilitated coverage for them was really priority number one and as we come to priority three and number four in our work is the now to begin that process of what did it look like going forward to be a Christian Counseling Center. What is it going to take for us to be the organization we want to be.
Smart, continued.
Schools will also use SMART tag™ IDs for the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) reward system, which was previously known as “Matador Bucks” or “Matador Cash” on some
Is it a change in structure? Is it a change in overhead? Is it a change in who we are? So, all those conversations are on the table and that’s what the board is committed to now -- that we have been able to successfully see the transition of clients and clinicians,” said Bigott.
While its mission of excellence will always remain at the heart of who GVCCC is, board members say the expression of that work, again, must change. That’s because Bigott says the needs of the community are greater than ever.
“We had some of the most high-profile voices especially during the Olympics of this year who have shared how important mental health counseling, conversation, partners, therapy – whatever it happens to be – how important that is to the vitality of life but also to the success of folks especially when they are going through really difficult times. It’s an incredible tool and a vital tool and it is extremely important for us to find a way and to find a voice to not only be an advocate for mental health services and mental health providers in Seguin and the greater Guadalupe County but to maybe find a way that we can be that partner again in whether a renewed sense of a counseling center or a brand new something that we haven’t even begun to dream up yet. But it is vital to us as an organization to make sure we keep that conversation front and center not only for our faith organizations like churches and other places but as the community as a whole for school districts and universities to see the resources that are there or to be able to find the resources for those that might need it,” said Bigott.
The group especially extends its thanks to the many volunteers and donors who have contributed to the center’s operation over the years. Services of the Christian Counseling Center were provided at 200 N. River St.
campuses. Students are reminded that they should wear their SMART tag™ ID at all times. Those who previously received a SMART tag™ ID in spring 2024 can use these cards during the current school year.
Students who need a replacement for lost or damaged SMART tag™
cards can purchase one for $5. The replacement cards for pre-K and elementary students can be ordered at school or picked up at the district’s Transportation Department. Middle and high school students can get new cards at their home campus.

(Seguin) -- The Texas Lutheran football team enters a new conference as they head into year three of the Neal LaHue era.
The Bulldogs are a part of the re-established Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) in football. TLU moves to the SCAC after seven seasons as an affiliate member of the American Southwest Conference.
The SCAC announced the reinstatement of football as a conference sponsored sport two years ago with play to begin this season. Football was an officially sponsored sport of the conference from 1962 (when the league was formed as the College Athletic Conference) through the 2016 season. Texas Lutheran previously competed in the SCAC in football from 2013 to 2016 before joining the ASC as an affiliate.
The conference will employ a double round-robin format. With only five conference schools participating in football, each team will play each other twice this season.
TLU head coach Neal LaHue says they are approaching the new conference format like the pros do.
“It’ll be like playing in a division with NFL guys. We’ve reached out to friends of mine that are in the NFL about how they approach that,” LaHue said. “We’ll have a plan for that. You know, we’ll see how we respond. We’ve got some long trips and hopefully (our opponents) have some long trips coming here.”
TLU is coming off a 2-8 season in 2023. Despite losing eight games, the Bulldogs were competitive. Half of their losses were by five points or less. On offense this season, quarterback Caden Bosanko returns for his junior year. Last year as a sophomore, the San Antonio East Central product appeared in all 10 games with six starts. He threw for 1,260 yards with 11 touchdowns and five interceptions to go along with five rushing touchdowns.
Defensively, LaHue says they have a good nucleus coming back.
“We have guys we’re counting on guys on the back end. (Troy) Tomaselli was Freshman of the Year, Mason Hardy is a senior who’s been an all-conference player. Our corners, I think, are gonna be pretty good. We have guys battling there.
“On the (defensive) line, Chris Monroe is coming back for a fifth year. Kaleb Hamilton played a lot of games last year as a freshman. And we like our linebackers. Tristan Smith was all-conference. He’s a guy to build around.”
TLU will start the 2024 season on the road in non-conference action against NCAA Division III 13th-ranked Trinity on Saturday night in San Antonio. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Trinity Stadium. We’ll have the game for you on KWED. Our Bulldog pregame starts at 6:30 p.m on Saturday evening on AM 1580 and you can watch a video feed of the game broadcast at the TLU+ YouTube channel.

COVID Vax Shots Will Cost You Big Time If You’re Not Uninsured (Washington, DC) -- The federal Bridge Access Program is running out of money so if you’re not on Medicare, Medicaid or have private insurance, you could end up paying two-hundred-dollars to get vaccinated. That’s a big concern among health experts who worry that low-income Americans won’t have the money to roll up their sleeves and get protected against the latest COVID variants. The CDC says only 22-percent of Americans are continuing to get immunized because COVID is no longer a public health emergency, even though it still kills tens of thousands of people annually.
Researchers Make History By Cracking Autism’s Genetic Code
(Charlottesville, VA) -- Autism researchers from multiple universities say they’ve cracked the code that identifies genetic markers of autism. The team, led by a biomedical engineering professor at the University of Virginia, say the system they’ve devised has an 89 to 95-percent accuracy rate. It relies on brain imagery and doesn’t have to wait for the classic symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder. They include avoiding eye contact, flapping hands, body rocking, sensory issues and communication problems. The researchers say taking a “genetics first” approach to autism could lead to earlier intervention and improved outcomes.
Warning That Carnivore Diets Could Lead To Heart Disease, Even Dementia
(Undated) -- There’s a warning that the trendy carnivore diet could be harmful to your health. It involves only eating meat, eggs and dairy while eliminating fruits, vegetables and carbohydrates. Dr. Rupy Aujila, a London physician and nutrition expert, says he’s concerned that the carnivore diet could lead to heart disease and even dementia. There are no long-term studies but Dr. Aujila points out that meat-heavy diets like this lack fiber, beneficial chemical compounds and vitamins. He says that can lead to high cholesterol and inflammation which are known risk factors for heart disease.
Study Shows Teens Addicted To Videos Have Poorer Sleep, More Social Anxiety
(Undated) -- A Chinese study finds that teens who are severely addicted to short-form videos have poorer sleep quality and higher levels of social anxiety. Platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels have popularized the short-term format. The videos typically last between 15 seconds and two to three minutes and feature quick edits, music and are designed for sharing on mobile devices. Their findings are published in the journal BMC Psychology.
