Changes to residential garbage collection begins next month

City shares more behind these new changes

Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) – The way that you take out the trash and make it ready for pick up is changing.

Four major changes are on the horizon for residential garbage collection in the City of Seguin. The changes are the results of renegotiated agreements made with the city’s service provider Waste Connections. All new changes are set to take effect Oct. 1.

Jennifer Sourdellia, the public information officer, says the series of changes, while maybe not popular, will in the end benefit all residents.

“These changes are being made to the service terms because it will allow us to keep the costs of things the same for our customers that way we don’t

have to do any cost increases,” said Sourdellia.

Sourdellia says perhaps the most substantial change involves the removal of bulky items. She says bulky items will now be picked up on a quarterly basis, instead of weekly.

“I really think that is going to be the biggest change for our residents and also residents are only going to be allowed to have two bulky items a quarter versus being able to put maybe more than two out every week. So, it’s really important to note that bulky items will only be picked up from the front curb of residences too. That’s going to be another big change for us,” said Sourdellia.

Seguin PD announces new community engagement officer

Promotion also includes role of public information officer

(Seguin) – Although she is not a stranger to the Seguin Police Department, Officer Stephanie Larrimore is stepping into a new role within the department.

The Seguin Police Department is proud to announce that Officer Larrimore has been appointed as the department’s new community engagement officer and public information officer. Larrimore replaces former Community Engagement Officer Sarah Chilutti who resigned earlier this year.

Seguin PD officials say in these dual roles, Larrimore will lead efforts to strengthen community relationships and serve as the primary point of contact for all media inquiries.

They say Larrimore, who has been working patrol for the last eight years and who has 12 years total in law enforcement, brings a deep commitment to public service and a wealth of experience to her new positions.

Larrimore says she looks forward to the opportunity to further engage with the community taking on all new responsibilities. She says building

strong relationships and fostering transparency are essential to effective policing, and she is committed to making a positive impact in Seguin.

“I have lived here 10 years in Seguin. I’d like to keep up the relationship that we have with the community. So right now, it’s with the Cinderella Ball and Blue Santa – National Night Out is one of our main things right now that we are doing – getting contact information and emailing people, calling people, making sure we can go out there and meet with the community, so I do enjoy this side of law enforcement. This is just my first time doing it full-

time,” said Larrimore.

As the community engagement officer, officials say she will focus on fostering open communication, building trust, and working closely with residents, businesses, and local organizations to address concerns and enhance public safety.

In her role as public information officer, she will be responsible for managing media relations, handling media inquiries, issuing press releases, providing timely and accurate information to the public, and ensuring transparency in the department’s communications.

Lieutenant Mike McCann says Officer Larrimore is exceptionally qualified for these roles and is confident in her ability to lead their community engagement and public information efforts.

He says, “her dedication to the community, along with her excellent communication skills, makes her the perfect fit to represent the department both within Seguin and to the broader public.”

Larrimore took over her new administrative role with Seguin PD in August.

Main Street announces next steps for Wells Fargo redevelopment

(Seguin) -- Following the public meetings held in the spring, the City of Seguin and consultants have been working on putting that vision down on paper. And that process has been the development of a General Land Use Plan (GLUP) for the site.

The GLUP is the document that dictates the details of how the site will be developed and includes information on preserving the historic structures, height restrictions, business uses, parking, setbacks, activation of the street level, signage, and much more.

Garbage, continued.

Residents can find their quarterly bulk item collection dates by typing in their address using the City Services App on the city website at https://bit. ly/yourcityservices.

Also included in that change of bulky items is additional assistance should residents find themselves having to discard bulk items during different parts of the year.

“Residents who need to dispose of additional bulky items can obtain up to four (4) vouchers to use at a community disposal site at the Post Oak Landfill Citizen Convenience Center, located at 7787 FM1150 in Luling. This gives customers a chance to dispose of extra bulk items at no cost. Vouchers can be picked up from the City Secretary’s Office at City Hall starting Oct. 1,” said Sourdellia. “I would say too if they also have additional bulky items to also consider our Clean Up Days. We have those twice a year. We have one of them in the fall. It’s coming up Sept. 28 and we also do one in the springtime around the end of March, early April.”

Now how residents throw out the trash is also among the new changes

Wells Fargo, continued.

The GLUP has been reviewed by the Historic Preservation & Design Commission, approved by the Planning & Zoning Commission, and will be going to City Council on Tuesday, September 3.

“The GLUP is the most important document for this project as it puts it in black and white of what developers will be allowed to construct,” said Kyle Kramm, Main Street & CVB Director/Historic Preservation Officer for the City of Seguin.

that residents will want to adhere to.

“All items are required to be placed inside carts. Garbage, recycling, and/ or other items placed outside of or next to carts will not be collected. To ensure garbage is picked up, residents are reminded not to place carts in front of cars, mailboxes, or any other obstructions,” said Sourdellia.

The last but perhaps the most notable change for customers will be the time in which all trash is expected to be placed outside.

Sourdellia says due to the city’s population growth, Wast Connections is starting collection routes earlier to ensure all customers are serviced on their scheduled garbage day.

“Garbage and recycling carts must be placed at the curb by 6 a.m. on service day. Carts set out after 6 a.m. may not be picked up until the next scheduled service day,” said Sourdellia.

Those needing extra garbage carts for overflow may also contact the city and request one. The cost is $6.65 plus tax per month.

Those having additional questions about their specific collection route or bulk disposal quarter are asked to contact Citizens Relations at 830-401-2445.

At the same time as the GLUP was being developed, the Cityhas been working on advertising the opportunity to the development community. The Request for Qualifications was released on Wednesday, August 28 and a site tour was held on Thursday, September 5 for any interested developers to visit and see the property.

Developers have until Oct. 1 to submit their statements of qualifications. A committee will review and score the statements and make a recommendation to City Council on which developers should continue in the selection process. That short list of developers will then receive a Request for Proposals in early December in which they will tell us their vision for the site, potential tenants that they would have, and much more information. Once the proposals are received, the committee will then score and select the top firm to begin negotiations on the future of the site.

This is an exciting opportunity for downtown Seguin and the end result will be a project that benefits the entire community.

Seguin boys force play-in game; Marion

Bulldogs Stun No. 13 Trinity in San Antonio, 35-20

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Texas Lutheran earned its first victory over a top 25 opponent since 2019, taking a 35-20 win over #13 Trinity Saturday night in San Antonio.

The top 25 win is the first under head coach Neal LaHue and the first win over Trinity since 2016 - a team offensive line coach Johnny Garcia was a member of. The victory snapped a ten game losing streak against top 25 opponents, with the last win coming against No. 6 Hardin-Simmons on Oct. 5, 2019.

Quarterback Caden Bosanko (San Antonio/East Central) finished 21-of-31 for 240 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed ten times for a team-high 19 yards. Caleb Camarillo (San Antonio/Southside) hauled in three passes for 67 yards and a touchdown while Cayleb Klostermann (Lyford/Lyford) caught two passes for 51 yards.

After a pair of possessions that ended in punts, the Bulldogs got on the board via a blocked punt by linebacker Tristan Smith (New Braunfels/Canyon) who would scoop and score for a touchdown to give the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead.

After a forced fumble by Kaleb Hamilton (New Orleans, LA/ Round Rock (TX)), the Bulldogs offense would double their lead to 14-0 following a one-yard rushing touchdown from Nehemiah Murry (Luling/Luling).

Trinity would respond with a touchdown of their own to cut the Bulldogs lead in half with just over five minutes left in the half.

Texas Lutheran would drive 75 yards in just over two minutes of action capped off by a 13-yard receiving touchdown from Cole Andrus (Jourdanton/Jourdanton), carrying a 21-7 lead into the half.

The Bulldogs would be held scoreless in the third but the Bulldogs defense would bend but not break throughout the period - limiting the Tigers to two field goals as the Bulldogs lead was trimmed to 21-13 entering the fourth quarter.

A 28-yard passing touchdown to Caleb Camarillo made it a

two score game. Back-to-back Trinity possessions would come to an end thanks to TLU defensive back Troy Tomaselli (San Antonio/ Cornerstone Christian) forcing a fumble before corralling an interception with 4:57 remaining in the game.

TLU running back Weston Guzman (McAllen/McAllen) would score the final touchdown of the game for TLU to put the game away, a two-yard rush to give TLU a 35-13 lead with 2:32 remaining.

The Texas Lutheran defense was impressive as a whole Saturday night - limiting a Trinity offense that outscored its opponents 481170 last season to just 20 points while forcing three turnovers. The 20 points are the fewest points scored by the Tigers in a loss since 2022 against Mary Hardin-Baylor. The loss is just the fifth in the last four years for the Tigers and only the second in the regular season. Trinity, who averaged 461.3 yards per game in 2023 was held to 287 yards by the TLU defense on Saturday.

The TLU defense was led by linebacker Diego Avila (Allen/Allen) with ten tackles (two solo) and a pass break up. Troy Tomaselli finished with eight tackles, a forced fumble, an interception and a pass break up. Tyler Ward (Woodway/Bishop Louis Reicher) finished with a teamhigh two sacks to go along with six total tackles.

Texas Lutheran returns to Bulldog Stadium next Saturday, as the Bulldogs host Centenary College on Sept. 14 in the 2024 home opener. Kickoff against the Gents is set for 6 PM and the game will be streamed on TLU+ along with KWED 1580 AM. All streaming and stats links can be found on tlubulldogs.com. The Pensacola News Journal says 70-year-old William Bryan of Muscle Shoals and his wife were visiting their condo in the Florida Panhandle last month when Bryan began feeling a sharp pain in his left side. He was admitted to a local hospital to have his spleen removed. Instead, doctors removed his liver by mistake. His family’s lawyer says Bryan died of catastrophic blood loss, and called it “one of the most egregious cases of medical malpractice” that he’s ever been involved with. The hospital says it doesn’t comment on active litigation.
