Class officially underway at area technical college
Two new certificate programs now available
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Guadalupe County) –The opportunity to learn a pair of new career opportunities is currently underway at the Texas State Technical College located in northern Guadalupe County.
Classes began last week in two certificate of completion programs new to the Texas State Technical College’s New Braunfels campus. Those programs include Structural Welding and Industrial Systems Mechanic - Electrical.
Mike Anderson, the campus’ provost, says he’s happy with the additions. He says the growth of the program is due to the newly created Texas State Technical College.
The location for years has operated as the Central Texas Technology Center at 2193 FM 758. Anderson says TSTC is one of 11 technical colleges across Texas.
“We started with the FAME Program which was advanced manufacturing and associates degree. We started that in Fall of 2023 and then, we were able to get our own campus designation through the state because it has to be written into legislation for us to operate as a campus. We got written new legislation to operate anywhere in Guadalupe and Comal County and then once that happened, College, pg. 3
Free online suicide prevention workshop being offered
Workshop designed to help others, save lives
(Seguin) – A local organization is not only observing one of the many National Prevention Weeks that are noted throughout the year, it is doing something about the problem.
Laraine Turner, of Precious Life Services, says in honor of National Suicide Prevention Week (Sept. 8-Sept. 14), the non-profit organization this Wednesday afternoon will be hosting a free online workshop to further discuss the issue of suicide prevention with anyone in the Seguin community.
Turner says the objective for the workshop is to no longer hide behind the stigma of suicide but to bring to life the real problem that exists among the lives of friends, family, neighbors, co-workers and or clients.
“Because of the families, it’s a stigma. They are embarrassed that we have someone in our family that has killed themselves. Nobody wants to talk about that. Nobody wants them to look at them going ‘you know, their husband killed themselves, their daughter killed herself. They don’t want that. They’d rather label it as an accident –they accidentally overdosed. They accidentally did this and we need to really grasp it. We need to dive right into it and say, okay somebody
in my family, they took their lives. They killed themselves so what can we do as a community. As long as we continue keeping it under the rug, keeping it behind closed doors and nobody wants to talk about –guess what, people that are needing help, that are thinking about killing themselves, they are going to feel isolated. They are going to feel ostracized like nobody is going to understand because nobody wants to talk about it. Nobody wants to deal with it and that’s the wrong approach. We need to get the word out there that there is help. If you are feeling this way, guess what, you are not alone,” said Turner.
Turner says Wednesday’s workshop will cover the identification and recognition of risk factors and warning signs of suicide, as well as debunking myths and facts behind the issue.
“With our Suicide Prevention Real Talk Workshop, we will explore the dynamics surrounding suicide such as the warning signs, the behaviors to look for, discuss what to do, what to say, where to get help including role playing with real life situations. We want the audience to be engaged if they choose but they can also dial in to just listen, but information is the key to helping
yourself, a family, a friend or a colleague,” said Turner.
Turner says the problem is real and deserves serious attention.
“In Texas, suicide is the 11th leading cause of death. It’s the second leading cause of death for ages 10-24. Third leading cause of death for ages 25 to 34. Even our elderly, our seasoned individuals in our community, it’s the 18th leading cause of death for ages 65 and up and Texas ranks No. 35 nationally,” said Turner.
For years, Precious Life, also known as Precious Life Suicide Prevention, has served the Seguin and surrounding areas providing total mental health services for youth, teens and adults.
The complimentary online workshop will be held via Zoom from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday. To register, visit Eventbrite at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/ identifying-and-recognizingrisk-factors-and-warning-signstickets-971413823897

Businesses, organizations,
College, continued.
schools, and individuals are all invited to join the parade with their own creative floats. Applications can be found on the fair's website, gcfair. org, under "Parade" within the main menu. The fee to enter is $40, except for qualified non-profit organizations with 501(c)(3) status. Don't miss out – the deadline to submit applications is September 30th.
The Seguin Fair Association encourages all participants to review the parade guidelines before entering. Judging begins at 8:30 AM, so floats need to be lined up and ready before then. Winners will be announced from the review stand in
we were able to add to programs. So, the obvious ones for us were going to be the welding program and the IST which is the Industrial Systems Technician Program within the electrical specialization and a lot of that has to do with just the amount of the employers in the area that could serve those needs and fill those workforce gaps. That was part of the reason for that decision,” said Anderson.
Structural Welding Instructor, Manuel Guerrero, is currently teaching a total of 45 new students divided into two classes.
Guerrero says the first week of classes went very well.
“The students are engaging with myself and their classmates, and they seem to be very excited about the semester ahead,” said Guerrero.
Joel McCracken, one of the instructors for the Industrial Systems Mechanic - Electrical program, says their program is also beginning with 24 students.
“The students will begin hands-on work with materials after only a couple of weeks,” said McCracken. “We don’t waste time.”
Anderson says he’s been looking forward to this for a
Central Park. Safety is paramount: adult supervision is required for all children participating, and entries with live animals must have a pooper-scooper on hand.
"We're thrilled to see the Fair Association continue bringing events to downtown Seguin," says Kyle Kramm, Main Street & CVB Director for the City of Seguin. "The parade is a fantastic opportunity to join the festivities. Head to downtown Seguin for the parade, explore the charming shops and restaurants, and then head to the fairgrounds for a full day of fall fun."
So, come experience the magic of fall in Seguin!
long time. He says this growth is a result of hard work from the faculty and staff.
“We call ourselves The Get a Job College” because we are really passionate about getting people great paying jobs and literally our mission is to put more Texans in great paying jobs. That is literally what it says to the word, so we get paid by the state based on those outcomes too, so we aren’t getting paid until they get placed in great paying jobs. So for a student to come through here and with the cost of higher education just going crazy right now and what we can do for them and then also get them into a great paying job, they are going to save a lot of money on the frontend, get put into a great paying job and if we don’t put them in a great paying job within six months of graduation in that field of study, then we refund them all their tuition money. That’s our money back guarantee program and so it’s a win, win, win across the board. The employers win. The student wins and the institution, the college wins as well,” said Anderson. “We are going to share in the responsibility of helping you.”
Anderson says they are already working to welcome the newest batch of students. Anyone who is interested in the available programs are asked to visit to tstc.edu.

Nighttime Light Pollution Could Cause Increased Risk Of Alzheimer’s Disease
(Chicago, IL) -- A new study suggests a link between nighttime light pollution and an increased risk of early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Scientists at Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center analyzed light pollution maps for the 48 continental states. What they found is that high nighttime light intensity is the top risk factor for Alzheimer’s in people under 65. They also recommend installing dimmers in your home and reducing exposure to blue light which can affect sleep.
