Murdoch’s acquires D&D Texas Outfitters
Company president shares the excitement of serving
Seguin
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) – D&D Texas Outfitters here in Seguin is no longer. This week, the locally owned farm and ranch retailer has turned over its operation to Murdoch’s Ranch & Home Supply. After decades of running the popular store just north of Interstate 10, D&D Owners Chase and Corbett Ferrell have sold the operation to Murdoch’s. In town to oversee the acquisition is Chris Odegard, Murdoch’s president and chief merchandising officer. Odegard, who is one of the five owners of the company, says he is excited to be a part of the local store’s next chapter.
“We are a farm and ranch retail operation. We are privately held. There are five of us that own it. We’ve all grown up in the business.

Squirrel Trail program, CVB website now state recognized
(Seguin) – The city’s Seguin Squirrel Trail program is now officially an award-winning Squirrel Trail program.
Visit Seguin, the city’s official convention & visitors bureau, is proud to announce that it has been honored with three prestigious awards from the Texas Association of Convention and Visitor Bureaus (TACVB) Destination Excellence Awards.
Included in that list are two awards recognizing the ongoing success of the city’s Squirrel Trail Program, which promotes art in public places. The fiberglass squirrel statues, independently sponsored by local groups and individuals, are painted and then placed in public areas throughout the community.
The Seguin CVB also walked away with a third Destination Award,
earning the People’s Choice for Website Design and Effectiveness.
Blair Friar, Seguin Main Street & CVB assistant director, says the scope of these awards are based on outstanding achievements in destination marketing and management.
“There’s the Peer Recognition which is voted again on by our peers and the Convention & Visitors Bureau community across Texas and that is by budget categories and then the Judges’ Choice is among all entries so no matter what budget category your CVB falls under, the judge’s pick their favorite out of all those submissions. So, yes, when you get picked in that section, it definitely brings us the excitement because you are competing against very large destinations and it’s just exciting to say that our program
was selected,” said Friar. Friar says the city is especially excited that its Squirrel Trail program is getting the recognition it deserves by receiving both the People’s Choice for Community/Local Engagement and Judges Choice for Community/ Local Engagement Campaign awards. She says it validates the project’s impact and creativity in the Seguin community.
“Because it is a statewide award entry process, to be able to submit it and get the award, it was very exciting. We are excited and proud to submit it of course but then when you are able to get it as a peer recognition as well as Judge’s Choice for that Squirrel Trail Award that kind of suits us up a little bit and kind of amps the whole squirrel program.

D&D, continued.
We love retail and we sell all the same products that D&D does plus some more. We love firearms, ammo, optics, and sporting goods. We will be bringing those in hopefully before Christmas and do a big job in pet supplies, pet feed, large animal feed – all the categories that you have come to love at D&D and more as well. This is our 7th store in Texas. We began adding stores down here in the fall of 2022 and are very proud to add this one in Seguin and partner with D&D,” said Odegard.
Odegard says he recognizes the reputation that D&D has held onto for the last several decades and is honored to be a part of the Ferrell family’s decision – a decision that also includes each of its current team members.
“We’ve known the Ferrell brothers for years. We’ve had the upmost admiration and respect for their business, customer service, great products, fair prices and when they called and said they were wanting to sell, we were happy to engage in that process with them. So, we are happy to take care of their people, bring their folks on board. The entire store team was offered positions last night (Tuesday night) and they began orientation this morning. We are getting the business back on its feet and have hit the ground running. Excited for this transition,” said Odegard.
The Ferrell brothers also in a written statement shared their thoughts about this next chapter.
“From our perspective, Murdoch’s is an outstanding farm and ranch retailer, and our core values of serving the customer, supporting the livelihood of our communities and valuing our team members are completely aligned. Our customers and team members will be in good hands,” said Chase & Corbett Ferrell of the sale.
Like D&D, Odegard says Murdoch’s takes pride
Squirrel, continued.
We are really proud of all three awards but that one really has been a labor of love and a really fun project to see come to fruition,” said Friar.
Friar says the awards recognize not only the idea for the squirrel trail program but also its implementation in attracting visitors.
“It’s based on special events that we are really trying to get the community behind and get that backing. In our submission, we included the success of the project, the number of sponsors that we have received, the number of squirrels in production as well as results from – the maps that are getting picked up daily in the visitor’s center. We have an online stop by stop map that you can take to go on the squirrel trail that we
in not only its customer service but also the overall standards that set throughout its 45 other stores.
“We are all about taking care of our people, our own and our customers. Just because we have a number of stores, it doesn’t mean that we have lost that sight of what is important, so we are here to have a great store, great service, great products and just want to build on the success of D&D,” said Odegard.
Although the Ferrell’s have turned over the D&D operation, Odegard says it is important to note that their D&D Trailers business will continue to operate next door.
“D&D Trailers continues and will be owned and operated by Chase Ferrell and they will be fantastic neighbors to have and excited to be right next to them,” said Odegard.
Meanwhile, Odegard is excited about transforming the store for local customers. He says team members will remain busy these next few months making the shift throughout its store shelves.
“We sell very similar products and in order to make this transition work, we need to clear through the similar ones and bring in our version. So, there will be quite a few deals going on throughout the store as we get sales enacted and as we transform the store. So, we might have something on sale but we are just going to move through that and bring in our version of the same product,” said Odegard.
Murdoch’s first store began in 1994 in its home office location of Bozeman, MT. Today, Murdoch’s operates stores spanning six states. Those states include Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, Texas, and Wyoming. They are also available to customers via their website at murdochs.com.
Here in Seguin, customers will benefit from new expanded hours at the ranch and home retailer. The hours will be 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.
can track how many people have used. We were able to submit some real good numbers on the usage and the adoption of this program from the local community because that is what really shows that it was a great program,” said Friar.
Like the squirrel program, Friar says its third award also solidifies the city’s new award-winning website –a novelty for any community in the state tourism industry.
“We launched our new website last year and we have really been able to see a jump in web traffic and just the general usage and ease of use, honestly of the website. That is kind of what was judged of how user friendly it was as well as what our actual numbers look like as far as people who are visiting our site and using it. So, we were really excited to be able to
put that in for consideration this year because it was a very exciting project for us and then to be able to be selected. Again, this was in our budget category which kind of evens out the playing field. We are able to compete against people who are at our level because we can’t obviously afford the websites of some really large destinations but to be able to say we have an award-winning website is also very exciting because we worked really hard on it and it’s been nice to see it all come out,” said Friar.
The state organization’s Destination Excellence Awards are said to help celebrate the outstanding work of destination management organizations across Texas. The TACVB presented Seguin with its awards last month in Austin.
Seguin boys force play-in game; Marion
Following upset over Trinity, TLU Bulldogs to open SCAC schedule at home on Saturday
(Seguin) — The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs come home this Saturday after a 35-20 upset of NCAA Division III 13th-ranked Trinity last Saturday in San Antonio.
The Bulldogs were led by Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week Tristan Smith and SCAC Defensive Player of the Week Troy Tomaselli. Smith blocked a punt and would go on to scoop and score a 12-yard touchdown for his first career touchdown to give the Bulldogs an early lead. Tomaselli finished with eight tackles, a forced fumble, a pass break up and an interception.
The victory was the first for TLU over a ranked opponent in five years and Bulldog head coach Neal LaHue said his team was ready to play after a season of close losses last year.
“A lot was made of our losing record last year and I’m really proud of the way our kids responded. We never lost focus. If you came and watched us last year in week nine and 10, you wouldn’t have known what our record was,” LaHue said. “Our kids worked their tails off, had great attitudes and I felt like we were in a lot of games last year. We just let (those games) slip away, we didn’t finish.
“We played with a lot of young guys last year and they worked extremely hard in the offseason. And then when you go through your fall camp, you get tired of hitting each other. So, they were excited about hitting different colored jerseys and they were ready to play.”
TLU will return to Bulldog Stadium in their home and
conference opener on Saturday to take on the Centenary Gents. Centenary recently brought back their football program to campus. The Gents are competing in their first NCAA season since 1947. Centenary fell, 43-20 at home to Hendrix in their first game of the season last week.
This Saturday’s conference opener will kick off at 6 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium in Seguin. We’ll have the game for you on KWED. Our Bulldog pregame starts at 5:30 on Saturday afternoon where we’ll visit more with Coach LaHue on AM 1580. This weekend’s game will also be simulcast on the TLU+ YouTube Channel.

(Washington, DC) -- The Biden administration is announcing a new rule in an effort to bring mental health insurance benefits up to the same level as those related to physical health. President Biden said in a statement issued today that “mental health care is health care,” but added that critical care and treatments are out of reach for too many Americans. The new rule adds to the 2008 federal Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act. A White House Domestic Policy Advisor says around 175-million Americans with private insurance could benefit from the new rule.
