TLU plays role in addressing healthcare shortages in Texas
(Seguin) – TLU’s director of nursing is contributing to the discussions and prevention efforts regarding the state’s shortage in nursing.
Texas Lutheran University’s Dr. Ruth Eby, Director of Nursing, recently participated on the Governor’s Task Force on Healthcare Workforce Shortages.
Under the direction of Governor Abbott, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) created the task force to help address shortages in the healthcare workforce and to expand opportunities and remove barriers that exist for healthcare programs at colleges and universities.
“No one denies that there is a national nursing shortage,” says Eby. “Nurses make up the largest section of the health professions and are involved in every area of care. While the shortage is not new, we learned that Texas is expected to have a greater need than other states.

Deadline nears for entry into Downtown Scarecrow & Skeleton contest
(Seguin) -- You've got only a couple more days to decide whether it's going to be scarecrows, skeletons or both. Monday is the deadline to enter this year's Downtown Scarecrow & Skeleton Display Contest.
For years, the Seguin Main Street Program has hosted a contest to officially welcome the start of the fall season.
Blair Friar, the assistant director for the Seguin Main Street and CVB, says the competition began in 2000 as a way for the city and the Guadalupe County Fair Association to help welcome the guests that travel in for the annual fair and PRCA rodeo. She says the window displays go up the week of the fair parade and are displayed until Pecan Fest held at the end of the month.
"Our goal of the whole program is to really get downtown decorated for fall and just really kind of start that excitement. It's a change of season and an exciting time. So, that's kind of the goal of the project is to really get people to decorate their storefronts and really make downtown look really wonderful for the season. We do love it when our businesses decide to participate and we've had some really unique scarecrows and skeletons over the years so we love seeing them come out every year," said Friar.
Friar says adding skeletons into the mix of fall décor is a recent trend for the city and encourages folks to use their creativity and imaginations to enter the best
decorations possible.
"We added the skeletons I think two years ago, and it was very exciting. People were excited to get to do that option too, so it has been a really great program for us," said Friar.
Friar says the city is hoping to welcome several new entries and reminds folks that they don't have to be in downtown Seguin to participate.
"You don't necessarily have to have a storefront downtown to participate. We can find a storefront for you. We have some businesses that every year, they are like 'we would be happy to host one. We don't do one ourselves.' But they will host you so don't let that stop you if you are still interested in participating, we can certainly find a storefront window for your scarecrow or skeleton. We want everybody to join in on the fun," said Friar.
Both businesses and organizations are eligible to participate in the friendly competition.
All entries will be judged by local celebrity judges on Wednesday, October 2. All entries must be up by October 1. Entries will be judged on creativity and uniqueness. Entries should remain up until October 28. A free entry form that can be found at the Main Street Program office located at 200 South Austin Street. They may also sign up online at www.seguintexas.gov.

a conversation between David McCampbell and County Judge Kyle Kutscher. Their idea was to create an event that raises money for our local first responders. As the event coordinator, I am excited to bring this great festival to Seguin, featuring a car show, live entertainment, craft and food vendors, and activities for kids. We invite everyone to join us on October 19th to support our local heroes who are always there when you need them," said Patrick Pinder,
The concern is that the shortage of nurses in America is putting patient lives in danger.”
Three workgroups were established within the task force. The first was charged with identifying roles within the healthcare workforce, examining education processes for those roles, and looking for opportunities to streamline administrative barriers and identify best practices in preparation for those about to enter the field. The second workgroup reviewed nursing education programs, considering both curriculum and clinical training, to determine whether those competencies best prepare Texas students for the new and future realities of the healthcare workplace.
And finally, the third group—of which Eby was a part—was tasked with bolstering faculty and preceptors and studying barriers as well as opportunities to increase the faculty pipeline, looking into innovative models that might widen that pipeline to better serve the needs of the healthcare system and ensure that the workforce is
event coordinator.
They've worked hard to create a fun-filled event for the whole family, with all proceeds from the Seguin Fall Festival is going directly to the fire departments in attendance.
"This festival is not just about entertainment—it's about giving back to the local heroes who serve our community. We hope you'll come out on October 19th to enjoy the festivities and show your support for our first responders. However, we still need your help to make this event a success." said Mr. Pinder.
Anyone interested in becoming a sponsor, vendor or participating in the festival can reach out to Patrick Pinder at seguinfallfestival@gmail.com.

reflective of all Texans.
Eby says the causes of shortages within the healthcare field are multifaceted—and that strategies to bolster those numbers must be just as diverse. “The workgroup I participated in shared and discussed many ideas to help schools and healthcare facilities meet the need for nursing faculty and preceptors.”
Eby goes on to explain that many of the strategies shared during the meetings have proved to be successful in local areas. “One of the most important things that came out of the conversation was that we need to work together. Local providers and schools must cooperate to implement some strategies, while other strategies will require a statewide effort.”
Over the last few years, TLU’s nursing program has grown to be a prestigious program in the area for those looking to enter the healthcare field. Both a baccalaureate degree program in nursing and master’s degree program in nursing at Texas Lutheran University have been offered and accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
Seguin boys force play-in game; Marion
Area teams ready for week four of high school football season
Chris Austin
(Marion) -- The Marion Bulldogs will face off with a Class 4A opponent for the second straight week on Friday.
The 3A Bulldogs will take on perennial 4A playoff contender Lago Vista in a non district match-up at Veterans Stadium this week. Last week, Marion fell to 4A Gonzales. The Bulldogs kept close with the Apaches, only trailing 13-6 late in the 3rd quarter but Gonzales would pull away late for a 23-6 win.
Marion running back Christian Sanchez ran for over 100 yards in his second straight game last Friday. The senior has 320 rushing yards through three games this season.
Marion head coach Ryne Miller says Sanchez put in a lot of work in the off-season to get ready for his senior year.
“He had a great summer. He probably put on 10 to 15 pounds of muscle,” Miller said. “He went to a bunch of different camps and obviously was here with our off-season program and summer program and our weight room. This is his senior year and you can tell he’s leaving it all out on the field.
“He’s a workhorse. I think he carried the ball 30 times against Gonzales, which is probably a few more than we would like, but he had no complaints. He rushed for over 100 yards and he’s having the senior season we thought he would have. We’re excited to watch him compete again this week, but also once we get into district.”
Friday night’s game will be the second-last non-district game for Marion this season. Kickoff between the Vikings and Bulldogs takes place at 7 p.m. at Veterans Stadium on the Marion High School campus.
(La Vernia) -- The Navarro Panthers will wrap up their tough nondistrict schedule on Friday when they head on the road to take on the La Vernia Bears.
The Panthers are looking to snap a two-game losing streak after falling 21-7 to Canyon Lake last Friday at Erwin-Lee Field in Geronimo.
The Hawks were able to keep the Panther Slot-T offense in check early, but Navarro was able to move the ball late in the game.
Panther head coach Rod Blount saw positives from his sophomore
quarterback Payton Helford, who battled against a stout Canyon Lake defense.
“Helford took some shots, he’s a tough, tough kid. He just kept on playing his tail off and throwing good balls and some guys made some plays,” Blount said. “So, that’s something we can build on to loosen up defenses and get people out of the box.”
The Navarro Panthers and La Vernia Bears will kickoff at 7:30 p.m. on Friday evening in La Vernia.
(Seguin) -- And it’s homecoming at Seguin High School on Friday as the Seguin Matadors host the Victoria East Titans to open play in District 13-5A.
Both teams earned their first wins of the season last week. The Titans took down Gregory-Portland 42-31 last Friday at home while the Matadors erased a 30-7 halftime deficit against Brazoswood to rally for a 41-37 victory in Katy last Thursday.
Friday night’s homecoming game between Seguin and Victoria East kicks off at 7 p.m. at Matador Stadium.
We’ll have week four of High School Football Friday Night on KWED. We’ll kick off our coverage with the Navarro Panther report with coach Rod Blount at 6:15 on Friday evening. The Panther report will be followed by the Marion Bulldog report with coach Ryne Miller.
And then we’ll head over to Matador Stadium for our Seguin football pregame where we’ll have the Matador report with Seguin head coach Craig Dailey inside our pregame. It all leads up to kickoff between Victoria East and Seguin at 7 O’clock on a Friday homecoming night at Seguin High School on AM 1580 KWED and streaming at SeguinToday. com.
(Converse) -- And week four of the high school football season kicks off Thursday night in District 13-5A as Comal Pieper plays at Wagner. That game will kick off at 7 p.m. at Judson ISD Rutledge Stadium in Converse.

Kolb
Helen Marie Tiemann Kolb was born in November of 1931 to her loving parents William Edward Tiemann and Helen Marie Willmann Tiemann on their family farm three miles east of downtown Seguin, Texas. She passed away on September 13, 2024 in New Braunfels, Texas at the age of 92. She will be truly missed by those she loved but left behind a lifetime of happy memories.
As a child, Helen attended Tiemann School, a small one-room school that Theodore Tiemann, her grandfather, started and donated the land for. She would walk to the school from their family farmhouse. Her father farmed the family land around the farmhouse and school. As a young girl, Helen witnessed the beginning of World War II as the skies above their farm filled with trainer aircraft circling the Tiemann farm after the Army Air Corps built a runway less than a mile from their farmhouse – now Randolph Auxiliary Field. She had two older brothers, Rev. Dr. William Harold Tiemann who became a Presbyterian Minister and Dr. Kenneth Edward Tiemann, an accomplished pharmacist. By example, her parents instilled traditional hard-working principles and taught them love of God and love of neighbor.
A talented soprano, Helen grew up singing at every opportunity, serving God with her voice for decades at St. James Catholic Church in Seguin. While attending Texas Lutheran College, and singing professionally part-time, Helen sang at an event on Randolph Air Force Base, where she met and soon thereafter married her husband of forty-nine years, Maj. Maynard Kolb. They had three children and served a full Air Force career living in Kansas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and California before returning to Seguin. During that career, Helen and her children were blessed to spend quality time with her family at the Tiemann farm in Seguin while her husband was deployed in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. After her husband’s retirement from the Air Force, the family returned home and Helen became actively involved in the Guadalupe County community.
Over the years, Helen proudly wore many hats – she had many hobbies and constantly volunteered her time to local organizations. To name a few, she was a realtor, law office assistant to her son - Judge Kevin Kolb, a Guadalupe County Master Gardner, a Seguin Chamber of Commerce Ambassador, member of the Guadalupe County Republican Women, member of the Conservation Society, member of the Delphians Study Club, Daughter of the Republic of Texas, vocalist, and active volunteer in many roles at St. James Catholic Church. She will be most fondly remembered though for the things that brought her the most joy in life – being a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
As an amateur genealogist, she proudly kept great records of her family tree and Texas-German heritage. She loved to share stories passed down through
generations about the struggles and the early years of German settlers to our area. Her direct ancestors included some of the first settlers of both Seguin and New Braunfels, as well as important community leaders such as her greatgreat grandfather, Tobias Meiniger – an early Texan-German architect and entrepreneur who designed various Seguin landmark buildings, including the historic landmark Sebastapool, and co-owned a stagecoach company that transported settlers from the port of Indianolia to Seguin, New Braunfels, and Fredericksburg.
Helen was a devout Roman Catholic and served St. James Church in any way she could – she was the first person to deliver Holy Communion away from Mass to patients at Guadalupe Valley Hospital and loved doing so weekly for many years. She also was a vocalist and song leader and is remembered by many for her beautiful solos of songs like her rendition of Ave Maria, which she sang for many years at Christmas Midnight Mass.
Her family will most fondly remember her for the joy, love, care, and support she gave them throughout the years. Known as “Mimi” to her grandchildren, a day never went by without her showing them love in some way. She attended every major event in their lives with, as she loved to say, “bells on.” She made Christmases magical and tough times bearable for everyone she loved.
Survived by:
Daughter – and primary caregiver for the last twelve years, Margaret “Margie” H. Traeger and husband John A. “Drew” Traeger Jr., their two sons: John “Andrew” A. Traeger III, spouse Megan M. Traeger, and daughters Ryan Grace Traeger and Reagan Margaret Traeger; and Steven M. Traeger, spouse Kaitlyn V. Traeger, and daughter Adeline Marie Traeger, all of New Braunfels, TX.

Study:
Black Women
More Likely To Die From Breast Cancer
(Boston, MA) -- A new study out of Boston shows that Black women are much more likely than white women to die of breast cancer. Researchers at Mass General Hospital found that Black women are 40-percent more likely than Caucasian women to succumb to breast cancer, including the most treatable types. After analyzing 18 studies involving 230-thousand patients, black and white, they’ve concluded that it’s not biology that’s driving that statistic. It’s racial disparities such as the cost of hormonal therapy that must be taken for five years or more. They say many more Black women than white women are uninsured and can’t afford to pay out-of-pocket.
Sanders
Calls
For Cheap Generic Ozempic
(Washington, DC) -- Senator Bernie Sanders says generic drugmakers could sell Ozempic for less than 100 dollars a month. The Vermont Independent made the comment Tuesday, and claimed he received confirmation from major generic pharmaceutical companies that they could sell cheap copycat versions of the diabetes drug. The head of the company that makes Ozempic, Novo Nordisk, will testify next week before a Senate committee chaired by Sanders focusing on U.S. prices for the popular drug, which is also used for weight loss. A month supply of Ozempic costs over 900 dollars in the U.S. if not covered by insurance.
Study: Thousands Of Chemicals In Foods Enter People’s Bodies
(Undated) -- A new study says that more than 36-hundred food contact chemicals end up in the human body. The chemicals enter the food during the manufacturing, processing, packaging and storage of foods.
