Changing lives one ramp at a time

(Seguin) –- A statewide program that has a very active chapter in Guadalupe County is turning to you for some help in continuing its mission to “build freedom for the homebound.” The Texas Ramp Project is in dire need of more financial support as the request for ramps continues to grow in the area.

Kay Geurin, the TRP coordinator for Comal and Guadalupe Counties -San Antonio/Northeast Region, says for years, groups of volunteers have set out to “provide free wheelchair ramps to low-income older adults and people with disabilities, so they can safely exit and enter their homes.”

“It has grown all over the state of Texas and what their mission statement is – is that we build wheelchair ramps for people in need and that means a physical need. Either they can’t stand up, walk, they are wheelchair bound, on a walker and in addition to the physical need, they have to have what we call financial need and what that means is they couldn’t afford to have a ramp built,” said Geurin.

SEDC lands 2024 international award

(Seguin) – The Seguin Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) is getting some much-deserved international attention.

That’s according to Nathan Ohle, the president and CEO of the International Economic Development Council (IEDC).

Ohle says the SEDC is being awarded the 2024 Excellence in Economic Development Bronze Level Award for its implementation of Quarterly Regional Job Fairs with regional partners.

Ohle states, “these exceptional projects showcase remarkable

dedication and ingenuity within the field.”

This award recognizes the organization’s successful regional job fairs, held in partnership with the Cibolo Economic Development Corporation, the Schertz Economic Development Corporation, and the New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce.

Proud of the work that is being done in the city of Seguin is Alora Wachholz, SEDC deputy director.

“I think that the greatest thing about being recognized by IEDC and on an international scale is just that we know what we do is

world class and we like to promote that but being recognized by an international organization that says in fact what we are doing with our regional partners is world class is sort of validating and it helps us to kind of showcase one of the many things that makes Seguin unique,” said Wachholz.

Every year, IEDC looks specifically to recognize economic development organizations, government entities, and programs that have demonstrated consistent, exemplary performance in the economic development profession. SEDC, pg. 3

There are currently five build teams operating regularly in Guadalupe County. Geurin says while the county’s Texas Ramp Project is not short on volunteers, it could use a few more dollars in making sure that whoever needs a ramp, gets one.

“We look at any kind of donation as a gift. The problem has been the last five years or so, the cost of lumber has just skyrocketed so we weren’t in this situation but the last maybe five or six years. Fifty dollars will buy enough screws to build two ramps so anything like that would be good. Maybe a couple thousand dollars from a foundation, that’s a good thing. That builds two ramps and as time goes on and if we get steeper and steeper in debt, there has to be a consideration of the length of the ramp. I mean if we’ve only got $2,000 to build with, we can’t’ build a 50-foot ramp. It’s just not going to work. Really and truly, I try to make sure we help as many people as we can,” said Geurin.

TRP takes pride in building each ramp without government funds. As a volunteer-based organization, it relies on donations and charitable grants. Geurin says most dollars given go directly into the actual ramp.

“We do all of our work with volunteers so any donations that are made goes to buying materials or any other costs like if we have a warehouse, we do make a payment toward the utilities on that but that is the only expense that we have,” said Geurin.

Despite the growing struggles with funding the project, Geurin says the group works very hard to address the need here locally.

“For Guadalupe County since the first of the year, we have had 46 referrals. Now, of those 46 referrals, we’ve built 24 ramps as of today and we have six cases pending and those have just come in at the beginning of August. It usually takes a few weeks before we can get a team put together, go out and do the survey and go out and build a ramp,” said Geurin.

Geurin says unfortunately, the number of referrals continues to grow. She says to be considered,

A healthcare or service agency representative must be

SEDC, continued.

They say these groups are those that are leading the execution of projects that have a significant impact on revitalizing communities and play a major role in shaping and improving the practice of economic development.

Wachholz says for the SEDC and its regional partners, offering the job fairs is a win not only for the manufacturing companies they represent but also for the community that they serve.

“The job fairs have grown

directly involved in the referral process for an application to be accepted. TRP volunteers says this is to ensure the medical prognosis and the financial needs are valid.

“Referrals come in statewide and then the home office, they divide it up by counties usually, so I get the referrals, and I look into them and what we do is we look and see what the condition is. Are they in hospice? If they are in hospice, well, we certainly do make that a priority. Are they having to leave to go for any kind of regular treatment like a lot of people on dialysis have to go like every day for some type of treatment. Well, they are a priority and of course, we look at other things involved to see if they need to move to the top of the list but most of the time, we build the ramp according to the date that the referral is made. So, we try to get out as quick as we can, “said Geurin.

Geurin has been an active part of the organization for the last 15 years. After retiring from the state of Texas, she had the desire to do something where the hours she donates really made a difference. Despite not having any carpentry skills, Geurin says she knew quite quickly that this program is where she needed to donate her time.

“A quick story about what sold me -- we went up there to build a ramp and it was for a child and this child could not even stand up. He just pulled himself with his legs and hands around on the floor. So, we were building the ramp, and I was learning how to put the uprights on the handrails, and he was sitting at the door. It was a mobile home. So, I looked at him and said, ‘wow, what do you think about all this going on?” And he looked me in the eye, and he said,” ma’am you don’t know how much this means to me. I’m going to be able to go out with my brothers and sisters now.” Oh, my goodness! Whoa! Now, that sold me right there. I thought, nope, this is what I’m going to do. This is what I’m going to do,” said Geurin.

Those wishing to make a donation are asked to visit https://texasramps.org/donate/ . Information on requesting a ramp can also be found at https://texasramps. org/request-a-ramp/ .

Since 2006, over 27,800 ramps have been built in the Lone Star State. The Texas Ramp Project serves residents in 132 counties.

every quarter that we do one. We’ve seen more in attendance from not only job seekers but from our companies and I think that right there is a testament that not only are they working but they continue to be needed so for those reasons, we absolutely make it a priority to continue to connect our local workforce with the employers here locally and I think by taking that sort of localized yet regional approach by having the four communities together on these job fairs is another reason of why it is so successful because we are able to

not just look within the limits of one city but really to look at this labor shed here where we operate and pull for our companies from this labor pool,” said Wachholz.

The honor was awarded specifically for the organization’s work in the Regional or CrossBorder Partnership category that impacted 200,000 - 500,000 residents.

The SEDC and its regional partners will be acknowledged and honored at the IEDC 2024 Annual Conference in Denver, CO slated for Sept. 15-18.

Seguin boys force play-in game; Marion

Mules pull away from Matadors to take week one victory

(Seguin) -- After a back-and-forth first half, the Alamo Heights Mules put the clamps on the Seguin offense in the second half to take down the Matadors 47-19 on Friday night in the 2024 season opener for both teams at Matador Stadium.

The teams combined for four touchdowns in the first quarter and three in the second quarter with big plays from both sides. Alamo Heights took the opening kickoff and drove into Seguin territory, but Matador defensive lineman Hunter Mica forced a fumble and the Mats recovered to turn away the Mules. On the ensuing drive, Seguin quarterback Corey Dailey found tight end Lane Seidenberger in the flat on the left side for a 17-yard TD score to put the Mats on top, 7-0.

Alamo Heights would respond on the next kickoff when Trip Johnson took a hand off on the return and outran Seguin defenders for an 80-yard return for a touchdown. Seguin was forced to go three-andout on their next possession and a special teams miscue would lead to another score. Seidenberger dropped to a knee to field a low snap for a punt and was ruled down at the six yard line. Alamo Heights athlete Michael Terry III then ran the ball into the endzone from the six to give the Mules a 14-7 lead.

Seguin would score on a dazzling 31-yard catch and run by receiver Nik Henry on their next possession. The UTEP commit darted in and around Mule defenders to take a pass from Dailey to paydirt and pull the Matadors to within one at 14-13 just before the end of the first

quarter.

In the second quarter, Alamo Heights scored on their next possession when quarterback Watson Lasswell found Landon Balldin for a 21-yard score. The Mules would go for two and Terry would fumble at the goal line. Seguin linebacker Reggie Richardson scooped up the ball and nearly scored two for the Matadors, but was tripped up at the Alamo Heights eight-yard line to keep the Mules in front by seven.

Seguin receiver Ayden Avila caught Dailey’s third touchdown of the half on a 24-yard pass later in the quarter to cut the lead down to one at 20-19. Alamo Heights would get a 50-yard touchdown run by running back DK Garza to give the Mules a 27-19 lead at the half.

In the second half, the Mules would take advantage of short fields after a forcing a pair of Seguin turnovers on downs and an interception to score three touchdowns, pushing the final margin of victory to 28 points. Garza and Terry would each score their second TD’s of the night on the ground in the trio of scores.

Seguin will look to rebound when they head to the road in week two of the 2024 season. The Matadors will play at Corpus Christi Miller next week. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Buccaneer Stadium in Corpus next Friday night.

In other area week one games, the Navarro Panthers beat Florence, 35-14 in Geronimo and the Marion Bulldogs fell 34-28 at Stockdale.

Large-scale polio vaccinations begin in war-ravaged Gaza after first case in 25 years

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Palestinian health authorities and United Nations agencies on Sunday began a large-scale campaign of vaccinations against polio in the Gaza Strip, hoping to prevent an outbreak in the territory that has been ravaged by the Israel-Hamas war.

Authorities plan to vaccinate children in central Gaza until Wednesday before moving on to the more devastated northern and southern parts of the strip. The campaign began with a small number of vaccinations on Saturday and aims to reach about 640,000 children. Gaza’s Health Ministry said more than 72,600 children received vaccines Sunday.

The World Health Organization has said Israel agreed to limited pauses in the fighting to facilitate the campaign. There were initial reports of Israeli strikes in central Gaza early Sunday, but it was not immediately known if anyone was killed or wounded. The pause ended Sunday afternoon, according to a schedule released by Israel.

Israel has said the vaccination program will continue through Sept. 9 and last eight hours a day. Gaza recently reported its first polio case in 25 years — a 10-month-old boy, now paralyzed in a leg. The World Health Organization says the presence of a paralysis case indicates there could be hundreds more who have been infected but aren’t showing symptoms.

The polio virus that triggered this latest outbreak is a mutated virus from an oral polio vaccine. The oral polio vaccine contains weakened live virus and in very rare cases, that virus is shed by those who are vaccinated and can evolve into a new form capable of starting new epidemics.
