SEDC celebrates 30th anniversary

Award recipients recognized during annual celebration

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) is celebrating its 30th year of negotiating business in the city of Seguin.

The SEDC recently extended its gratitude to the local business community during its 12th Annual Business Appreciation Luncheon and 30th Anniversary celebration held at the Seguin Coliseum.

In addition to thanking the community for its support, the SEDC also honored all outstanding achievements that have driven economic growth and that have fostered community partnerships.

SEDC Board President Carlos Moreno says the SEDC plays a pivotal role in progress and in maintaining the business climate that the city has come to enjoy.

“It’s an organized approach to making sure that the company, the retail centers, restaurants, housing developments -- that everything that is coming to Seguin is an organized approach with the actual executive director and the team from the actual city and then the constituents which is having a board – members like myself and having an organized approach to getting policy passed and approval of businesses, performance agreements, incentives and things like that, “said Moreno.

TLU’S 2024 KROST SYMPOSIUM

October 9th • 7PM

Jackson Auditorium

Keynote Speaker: Felicia Wu Song, author of Restless Devices, will be discussing how our devices are affecting our wellness. This event is free and open to all.

2024 TLU Krost Symposium to discuss Dimensions of Wellness

Seguin community invited to join in on the discussion

(Seguin) -- You’re happier when you feel well. And feeling well makes you happier. Everyone knows that. But what does true wellness encompass, and what are actual steps you can take toward being well, feeling great, and living your best life?

Exploring those questions are at the forefront of this year’s Krost Symposium at Texas Lutheran University.

This year’s theme is Dimensions of Wellness: Healthy Habits, Happy Life. The two-day event which begins Wednesday focuses on eight main

aspects of wellness. Those aspects include emotional, financial, social, spiritual, occupational, physical, intellectual, and environmental.

Leading the planning of this year’s Krost is Dr. Erika Short, associate professor in kinesiology. Dr. Short says this year’s program will cover everything from getting plenty of exercise and quality sleep, to developing an emotional support system, to expanding a sense of purpose and meaning in life and making wise financial decisions.

Kicking things off on Wednesday evening will be a keynote address

by cultural sociologist Dr. Felicia Wu (woo) Song, author of Restless Devices: Recovering Personhood, Presence, and Place in the Digital Age. Dr. Short says the author will explore how our digital habits shape how we relate to time and space, to ourselves and others, and even to God.

“In this book, she talks about how we are basically tied to that phone and how it becomes an addiction and when we step away from it, how we can become closer with each other and with God and Krost, pg. 3

(Seguin) – Here’s your chance to take home a ribbon at this year’s Guadalupe County Fair. Today, Wednesday Oct. 9, is the arrival day for all home arts division entries. All entries will be accepted today at the Guadalupe County Fairgrounds between 2 and 7 p.m.

According to the Guadalupe County Fair Association, the home arts division is one of the many traditional events for the fair and helps promote the many talented residents that live in Guadalupe County.

Several items are accepted and include things such as antiques, cross-stitch, knitting, sewing projects, canned items, handwork, photography etc. Divisions include Adult; High School; Middle School; Elementary 1-4; Kindergarten and Preschool and Exceptional.

All entries today should be entered at the Exhibition Hall at the Guadalupe County Fairgrounds. Cut flowers are also eligible to be entered. Cut flowers, however, should arrive between 9 and 10 a.m. Thursday.

After judging, all entries will remain on display through the end of the fair. Items must be picked up on Sunday from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

There is no cost to enter projects in the Home Arts exhibit. Each exhibitor in the home arts division will receive one free pass to the fair. Special prizes for most entries in the home arts division will also be awarded.

Krost, continued.

there are things that we are missing out on when we are attached to our phone so much. So, I want students and the community to open their eyes to the reality of how addicted we are and how it is controlling our life and how our quality of life can be so much better if we just put the phone away at times. I think we all know it, but it is a good reminder that we need to enjoy life. That it is precious and that we need to focus in on the moment rather than just trying to be distracted by our phone and that’s what Felicia Wu Song also talks about in regards to really living life to the fullest rather than being distracted all the time,” said Short.

Dr. Song’s presentation at 7 p.m.

Meanwhile, today is also the start of school tours at this year’s Baby Barnyard. Hundreds of area school children will spend part of their day at the fairgrounds learning more about the importance of agriculture.

This year’s official fair catalog is available online at www.gcfair.org. The Guadalupe County Fair and PRCA Rodeo officially gets underway Thursday and runs through Sunday.

Wednesday will be followed by a meet-and-greet.

Discussions will continue the next day at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in the TLU Wupperman Little Theatre.

Dr. Short says the community is invited to sit in for a panel discussion featuring what TLU officials are calling a “stellar lineup of guests.”

“I have some former students and another couple, and they are going to be talking about financial wellness, spiritual wellness and then physical wellness in regard to exercise and nutrition. A lot of times, people just think of it as physical --- oh, I’m not sick. I feel good but also there’s a lot more to it in regard to mental, spiritual, social and so we want to bring attention to that and make people realize that it’s a balance in regards to all of those wellness

components,” said Short.

Those to be featured on the panel include Finance experts Matt and Eliesha Cavanaugh who will discuss mortgages along with TLU alum Kelly Lively, the owner of Faith Inspired Training (F.I.T. Athletics). Lively is a certified personal trainer and nutrition coach known for leading her clients toward transformation from the inside out.

Also joining the panel will be TriRice Van Buren, another TLU alum and owner of Believe Your Strength Elite Fitness (BYS Elite Fitness) and Youth Pastor Raul Bustillos, a recent TLU graduate who was invited to offer insight in many areas including spiritual wellness.

Both events of the Krost Symposium are free and open to the public.

Anyone with questions is asked to contact Chairman Nichole McLean at 830-265-3147.

As part of the annual luncheon, the SEDC also proudly recognized groups, businesses and individuals who have contributed to the overall business success of the city.

In fact, the first award recipient is no doubt near and dear to Moreno’s heart. Not only has he given the last five years to the SEDC Board but over the last year, he has helped launch the Seguin High School Construction Trades Booster Club which this year was recognized by the SEDC with the Workforce Champion Award.

“Being the board president but then being recognized with the Seguin High School Trades Booster Club, the SEDC is not only charged with trying to bring in and attract great companies, retail, businesses but it’s also to retain and develop a workforce and so that was the award that we received was the Workforce Development. So, what we are trying to do on the booster side is developing and helping to create a pipeline of skilled trades and so that’s kind of what the award was for -- helping to develop skilled trades because a lot of these employers and companies that are coming, they want to know that when they do come that there is a pipeline of skilled trades and not just labor and we were recognized for that. I thought it was awesome,” said Moreno. Founded in 2023, the Seguin Construction Trades Booster Club, under the direction of Instructor Jason Rice, supports the construction trades program at SHS where 71 percent of students are economically disadvantaged.

Also recognized for their outstanding achievements was Maruichi Stainless Tube Texas Corporation. The company received this year’s Economic Impact Award. Maruichi broke ground on a 153,000-square-foot, state-of-theart manufacturing facility located on 8th Street in the Rio Nogales Industrial Park. Construction was completed in the spring of 2024, and the company has

since begun ramping up operations. Moreno says this project represents a $75 million capital investment and will create at least 106 high-wage jobs over the next few years.

“Maruichi, one of the biggest manufacturers in the stainless tube industry is kind of getting ready and poised to help with the pipeline and product support for like with Samsung, chip manufacturers, the I-30 corridor is beginning to fill up with advanced tech technology and Maruichi, coming to Seguin – a company that is based out of Japan – understanding and being able to support Samsung, I think that was a big win for Seguin over the last couple of years. We had Niagara, Caterpillar so it’s kind of on that level,” said Moreno.

The final award presented was the Community Impact Award. Moreno says this year’s recipient was Chris Larson of Blue Horizon Media. Moreno says he appreciates the SEDC’s understanding of Larson’s work which is described as highlighting the best of Seguin while personally committed to supporting his neighbors.

“But then to do the individual, Chris Larson, he’s got a lot of passion in what he does and the content that he creates. But his platform is media and being able to touch and draw on people, he just does great and I think his involvement with the media and being able to tell those stories is why he was awarded and he’s going to continue to do great things and it’s easy because that’s his passion. We were excited for him to get that award,” said Moreno.

This year’s anniversary celebration also featured various highlights, including the Small Business Pop Up Shop Segment, which showcased the vibrancy and diversity of local entrepreneurs. Serving as keynote speaker was Michael Bettersworth, Texas State Technical College, Senior Vice Chancellor and Chief Marketing Officer. Bettersworth inspired attendees with his insights into the state of the workforce in Texas with announcements of new campus openings across Texas.
