Operation Green Light for veterans in Guadalupe County Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- You’re encouraged to shine your own light on the dedication and sacrifices of our veterans. Taking the lead in this new national collaborative initiative to support military veterans is Guadalupe County. Guadalupe County has proclaimed this week (Nov.6-12) as Operation Green Light. Sharing the county’s support of its veterans and encouraging folks to illuminate the color green in their honor is County Judge Kyle Kutscher. “Operation Green Light is a way to recognize the service of those men and women who gave back to our country, who fought for our freedom just as a symbol of really showing that appreciation, that recognition lighting up buildings in a green light. We encourage residents to do so at their home also. Maybe just changing one bulb on your front porch anywhere to have that green illumination just to go ahead and show veterans that there is a tremendous amount of love and support for what they’ve done for our country, what they had to sacrifice being away from families and other issues that they’ve had to go through,” said Kutscher. Three fill vacant spots on Seguin ISD leadership team Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- Seguin ISD welcomes three recent hires to its leadership team. The first is Dr. Sam Hogue who comes from Fabens ISD in El Paso. Dr. Hogue is serving as the interim deputy superintendent. Dr. Hogue is filling the position of Dr. Veronica Vijil, who is currently serving as the Seguin ISD interim superintendent. She says Dr. Hogue has many strengths and brings a wealth of knowledge to this role. “He has previously served as a principal on multiple high school campuses. I am grateful for his willingness to join us on an interim basis,” said Vijil. Second is Joel Treviño who has accepted the position of chief of Human Resources. TTrevino replaces former HR Director Cindy Moreno who resigned in late September. Vijil says Trevino also brings a wealth of experience from the North East ISD in San Antonio.

“We are truly fortunate to have him on board permanently. He is creating systems, connecting with other departments, and visiting with campus administrators,” said Vijil. Rounding out the list of three is Jill Nash. Nash in October was appointed as the district’s new director of community engagement. She will also serve as the executive director of the Seguin Education Foundation. Vijil says as a longtime employee of First Commercial Bank and as a school volunteer, she has been very active in the Seguin community. “Mrs. Nash already has a large network of contacts throughout the community. Her skills will prove beneficial to help nurture relationships with the business community and also continue the momentum of SEF,” said Vijil. Nash replaces former SEF Executive Director Kelly Follis.

Sidewalk grant received for Joe Carrillo Blvd (Seguin) -- The City of Seguin has been awarded a $2.0 million federal grant that will be used to develop safer pedestrian and bicycle access to the Koennecke Elementary School and Jim Barnes Middle School campuses, playgrounds and ball fields. The grant monies will fund sidewalk improvements, including crosswalks, crosswalk markings and pedestrian signage at the two school campuses to improve safe crossings at Joe Carrillo Boulevard. Currently, sidewalks in this area are limited for transporting students

and their bicycles. During school arrival and dismissal times, Seguin ISD currently closes the road to ensure the safety of students crossing the street. Specifically, the project will include the construction of a 10-foot shared-use path along the east side of Countryside Boulevard from FM 466 to Joe Carrillo Boulevard, and along the south side of Joe Carrillo Boulevard from SH 123 to east of Lantana Gate. “It’s so rewarding to be able to provide improved walkability and

increased safety for students at these schools,” said Melissa Reynolds, Director of Engineering at the City of Seguin. “In the future, these shared use paths will connect to the planned TxDOT improvements at Eastwood and FM 466, further increasing our goal of transportation for all modes of traffic.” On October 26, 2023, the Texas Transportation Commission (the Commission) approved funding for 83 Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside (TA) Program projects from across the state, including the project in Seguin.

Light, continued. Kutscher says over the years, the county’s veteran population has grown. Not only that, but he also says the veterans themselves have become key players in the community. “In Guadalupe County, we have a veteran population estimated at 17,877 veterans. The vast majority living in the west end of the county in Schertz and Cibolo because of Randolph and other military operations that are in close proximity but also at the auxiliary field and retired veterans are a growing population in Guadalupe County. They really are all spread out all over. That’s really high compared to a lot of counties that don’t have huge military operations that reside within their county. So, it is a big part of who we are. It’s a big part of our community, our identity,” said Kutscher. Kutscher says showing veterans they are supported and appreciated has been a priority for the county. He says ensuring they have what they need has played a major factor in the direction of the county’s operation. “I’m proud by the way that our county supports veterans. We have a number of programs that give back to them, but we should always strive to do better.

We should always strive to do more and again, this Operation Greenlight is just a small token and symbol of that appreciation but it’s only for a week. There’s 52 weeks in a year. We need to be doing something all the time to try to give back to those individuals that afforded us the opportunity to be able to live the way we live. Our Veterans Service Office in Seguin and the Schertz office just to give some background to assist veterans, families, and dependents with accessing VA benefits and also have outreach and provide guidance on education opportunities, referrals for employment and healthcare with a number of other services. We do have a Veterans Treatment Court. Basically, it’s an opportunity for veterans that may have found themselves in a tough position to go through and up to a two-year treatment program then to successfully complete and have their charge either reduced or dismissed. It’s not an easy process. I don’t want people to think ‘oh veterans can do whatever they want, and they get off.’ It doesn’t work that way. It is an intense program that they have to comply with,” said Kutscher. According to officials “greenlight” is a term commonly used to activate forward movement. In this case, to “greenlight” veterans is to forward them as a valued member of the community.

Doerfler

Pastor John David Doerfler, a man who truly never seemed to tire, claimed the promise of his baptism on Saturday, November 4th, in his home surrounded by his loving family at the age of 74. A memorial service honoring God and celebrating David’s life will be held on Thursday, November 9, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at the Chapel of the Abiding Presence on the campus of Texas Lutheran University in Seguin. A reception will follow in the Timmermann Room at Hein Dining Hall at Texas Lutheran University. The service will be live-streamed at https:// tinyurl.com/ycxzua44. David always wanted to be with his children: Ashley, Meredith, Andi, and Lizzy, and grandchildren: Simon, Pierce, Chloe, Grayson, Georgia, Yuri, and Crosby. He loved projects like building ziplines and forts and giving them all sorts of things they could hurt themselves with.

Oates

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mr. James Louis Oates, who unexpectedly left us on October 24, 2023. Known to many as “Goat”, he was born on July 3, 1957. James was an individual of authenticity, generosity, trustworthiness, and an affinity for fun. He was a simple soul but was a rich man because everybody he touched with love, loved him in return. His radiant personality shone through in his devotion to his family and friends, a legacy that will live on. James most recently had a respectable career at the Guadalupe County Road and Bridge Department, proudly retiring in 2022. In his younger years, he worked as a mechanic and semi-truck driver. He spent countless hours rebuilding motors, fixing cars, and building things. He enjoyed the time spent in Wilburn Brown’s garage during the 1980’s building the awardwinning tractor pull truck “Fantasy”. His many years as a truck driver were recognized as accident free, quite an accomplishment for all the miles he traveled across the country. His tireless work ethic was an example to all who knew him. Emphasizing the importance of a job done right, he passed this valuable lesson on to his children, teaching them about the gratification and rewards of hard work. It was during his career at Structural Metals Inc. that he was introduced to his lifelong friends and brothers including Henry “Tequila” Mertz, Ernest “Cowboy” Neumann, Reyes “Chainsaw”

WED. November 8, 2023

We will miss him greatly. David is preceded in death by his parents, mother-in-law Georgia Laughlin, father-in-law John Laughlin, Gene Brown, Jerry & Jeffrey Boemer, and Byron Hanna. He is survived by his loving wife Cindy Doerfler and his children, Ashley de Jong and her husband Frank, children Simon, Chloe & Pierce; Meredith Leigh Theroux and her husband Chris; Andi Gaspard, her husband Justin, children Grayson & Georgia, Lizzy Seedhom and husband Yousif, children Yuri & Crosby, faithful dogs Beau and Piper, as well as his sisters Kathy Pancoast, Ruthie Hanna, Christine Brown, Valerie Doerfler, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members and many friends. In lieu of flowers, gifts made in Pastor David’s honor to the TLU Athletics Department or the Verne Lundquist Athletic Center at TLU would be greatly appreciated c/o Texas Lutheran University, Development Office, 1000 West Court St., Seguin, Texas, 78155-9989. Castenalloz, Timothy “Dancing Bear” Sczech, and Larry “Gear Jammer” Jahns. Ultimately these men and their families meshed together creating an unbelievably strong, lifelong example of brotherly love and what it truly means to be a family. James met the love of his life, Patty McFarland in 2007. The couple shared a vivacious love for one another that was like no other. They were most happy just being together and shared a love for animals, dancing, country music, good food, their family, and friends. Anyone that knew of James and Patty knew that they were each other’s soul mates. June 15, 2013, Patty unexpectedly suffered a major stroke and passed away leaving a void in James’ heart that many could agree would never be filled. James is survived by his mother, Nellie Oates, his devoted sister, Linda and husband Allan Trial and nephew Scott Trial. His two cherished children; his daughter, Jennifer Horne and husband Glen Horne and his son, Christopher Oates and fiancé April Ferrell. His beloved granddaughter, Presley Hirsch was undoubtedly the apple of his eye. James leaves behind a brother, JJ Edwards. James also loved another brother, David McFarland and his wife Linda. Their children Cheyenne and Hunter were very dear to him and he looked after them as any good uncle should. James was predeceased by his father, Samuel Louis Oates. The loss of James leaves a void that can never be filled. His authenticity and generosity made every interaction with him feel genuine and warm. He will be dearly missed, but his lessons, his love and his legacy will persist in the hearts of those he left behind. A Celebration of Life is being planned for a later date.

Study: Daily Marijuana Use Leads To Higher Risk Of Heart Disease (Philadelphia, PA) -- Daily marijuana use raises the risk of heart failure, say two new studies. Presented at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions in Philadelphia, the study says older adults who don’t smoke tobacco but use marijuana are at a higher risk of heart attack and stroke when hospitalized. Those who use the drug every day are 34-percent more likely to see heart failure, according to the non-published studies. The AHA advises people not to smoke or vape any substance, including cannabis, because of potential heart and lung issues. Gillibrand Pushes For Menthol Cigarettes Ban (New York, NY) -- New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is pushing for a ban on the manufacturing and sale of menthol cigarettes. She joined other elected officials and health officials in Harlem on Monday to talk about the dangers of menthol cigarettes. Studies show they are highly addictive and more difficult to quit than non-menthol cigarettes. The Food and Drug Administration last month sent rules to the White House Office of Management and Budget for review on the matter. More than half of adult smokers in New York City use menthol cigarettes. Nearly 30-Thousand Pounds Of Chicken Nuggets Are Being Recalled (Undated) -- Nearly 30-thousand pounds of dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets are being recalled. Over the weekend, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced that Tyson Foods issued a recall for its Fun Nuggets. The recall is specifically for the 29-ounce plastic bags. Officials say the contaminated nuggets were made on September 5th. Sterile Fruit Flies Released in Los Angeles (Los Angeles, CA) -- Millions of sterile fruit flies have been released in the Los Angeles area in an attempt to end an infestation that is destroying local citrus crops. The Mediterranean fruit fly has been called the most dangerous pest in the world because of how much damage it can do. The hope is that the sterile flies will mate with fertile flies and will die without bearing offspring. Fruit, meantime, is being removed from farms and grocers and the California Department of Food and Agriculture has imposed a quarantine on moving fruit out of the Los Angeles area. The 30-day quarantine applies to farms, stores, distributors, as well as residents with fruit trees on their properties.
