(Seguin) -- Seguin’s Park West is awaiting repairs after vandals targeted the local park not once, but twice in the past week. Stephanie Larrimore, Seguin PD community engagement officer, says the first damage was reported early Tuesday morning on Feb. 25. She says vandals reportedly destroyed the park’s restrooms and the bay door to the concession stand.
Following the repair of those
damages, Larrimore says vandals struck again two days later. This time, she says the suspects had every intention of causing destruction as they brought several tools. Not only did they rip out the hand dryers from the walls of the restroom, but they also pulled off the toilet grab bars. Six swings were also cut and destroyed in the playscape area.

(Guadalupe County) -- A Guadalupe County woman is behind bars and charged with injury to a disabled person, firstdegree felony. Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Officials say on Friday, Feb. 28, investigators were contacted by Ascension Seton Hospital in Luling about a disabled adult female who had arrived and was severely dehydrated and suffering from a severe caloric deficit for an extended period of time.
Investigators arrived at the hospital and collected evidence from medical professionals. Investigators also conducted interviews to determine that Felisa Ann Sepulveda, a Guadalupe County resident, was the sole caregiver for the adult disabled female.
Sheriff’s officials say based on evidence and statements investigators obtained and executed a search warrant at her residence in the 500 block of Weber Road. As a result of the search warrant, investigators located additional evidence that assisted in the
48-year-old’s arrest.
Investigators say they also contacted the Guadalupe County Animal Control to assist with removing 29 dogs from the residence. Due to a lack of kennel space at the Guadalupe County Animal Shelter, GCSO Animal Control coordinated with the Cibolo Police Department for temporary shelter of the animals. They say since many other area shelters were full and had the Cibolo Police Department not assisted, several animals would have likely been euthanized.
Sepulveda remains behind bars on a $300,000 bond.

(Seguin) – Tickets are still available for the Mariposa Masquerade Ball benefiting the Thriving Hearts Crisis Center. The fundraiser is set for this Friday night at the Seguin Coliseum.
Manijeh “MJ” Huereca, the CEO for the shelter, says the organization remains a cornerstone of support for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault since 1983. Formerly known as the Guadalupe Valley Family Violence Shelter, Huereca says the shelter remains the only shelter service of its kind in Seguin – providing compassion, healing, resilience and transformation to those in crisis.
Huereca says the fundraiser this year will not only raise money, but the night of fun will also help celebrate its future.
“It is going to be so much fun. We will have a live band. Dinner will be provided, and we will have a really exciting announcement about Thriving Hearts and the Crisis
Center and where we are going and what the future is going to look like for us. So, we are excited to share what that is. I can’t tell you what it is now but if you come, you will find out,” said Huereca.
Huereca says on top of your ticket, there will be plenty of other ways to show your support that evening.
She says in addition to live and silent auctions, there will also be a fun way to take home some jewelry.
“We are going to have a Kendra Scott pull as well. You pay $60 and you will get to pull a piece of Kendra Scott jewelry. We have multiple pieces available, but you don’t know which one you are going to get so that’s the fun part about that. You’ll get to hear more about us, hear about our heart and all the great work that we have done in the community over the last 41 years and where we are headed,” said Huereca.
Huereca says any type of community support is a contribution
toward continuing to serve as a lifeline. She says the shelter serves as a beacon of hope for individuals facing “unimaginable challenges.”
“I would just say come on out and take a look. Get to know us. See if our organization is the right fit for you. Is this a cause that you care about. Not everybody can solve the problem of domestic violence, but everybody can do something to help. The fundraiser, the gala is a great opportunity to do that,” said Huereca.
The Thriving Hearts Crisis Center not only serves Guadalupe but also Gonzales, Karnes, and Wilson Counties.
Table sponsorships are available starting at $500 for a table of 10. Individual tickets are $50. Tickets can be purchased online at A limited number of tickets will be sold at the door. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Friday. Links to tickets can be found here.

(Seguin) – TLU is inviting you over tonight for some music. The TLU Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Winds—who’ve just returned from their spring tour— will present their concert, “Wind Dances,” featuring vibrant, energetic music written for the concert band, under the direction of TLU Director of Bands Dr. Brett Richardson.
The Symphonic Winds program includes Jack Stamp’s Cenotaph (Fanfare for Band), Bloom by Steven Bryant, and the famous American Folk Rhapsody No. 2 by Clare Grundman featuring interesting treatments of tunes like “Billy Boy” and “Skip to my Lou.”
Vandals, continued.
Seguin Police Detectives say they have successfully identified four suspects for the crimes. Larrimore says the suspects are believed to have caused anywhere from $10,000 to $15,000 in damages – a state jail felony.
The concert’s second half will bring TLU’s premier band, the Wind Ensemble, to the stage with a program featuring TLU assistant professor of trombone, Dr. Lauren Casey-Clyde, and instructor of trumpet, Professor Dan Orban, on two selections: Leonard Bernstein’s beautiful “A Simple Song” from MASS and Joseph Turrin’s Latin inspired Fandango.
Other works include Bright Shadow Fanfare by Nicole Piunno and Omar Thomas’s Come Sunday in celebration of the Black church. The concert will take place on campus in Jackson Auditorium on Thursday, March 6, at 7 p.m.. The concert is free and open to the public.
City officials say they are currently awaiting contractor bids so they can begin the necessary repairs. In the meantime, the city has placed portable restrooms at the park for the community.
With Spring Break around the corner, officials say extra patrol
should be expected at all local parks. Larrimore also reminds the public to See Something, Say Something. She says citizens should never hesitate to report suspicious behavior and are encouraged to call the Seguin PD at 830-379-2123.

Joyce McFarren Bowerman, a vibrant and loving soul, passed away peacefully in San Antonio, Texas, on February 15, 2025. Born in Marion, Indiana, Joyce’s life was one of adventure, dedication, and boundless generosity. She spent five years of her childhood in central Mexico before returning to Indiana, where she graduated from Rock Creek High School. The first in her family to earn a college degree, she received her teaching credentials from Ball State University. Joyce’s career spanned from Indiana to California and eventually to Germany, where she taught for the Department of Defense.
At just 5’2”, Joyce was living proof that “great things come in small packages.” She radiated energy and enthusiasm. A natural extrovert, Joyce was a community builder, a social organizer, and a friend to all. From Seattle to Canton, Ohio she built strong villages in which to raise her two daughters. In 1977, she found her final and most beloved home in Seguin, Texas, where she became a self-proclaimed “born-again Texan.” There, she led “The Renegades,” a group of spirited elementary educators, leaving an indelible mark on the
Sylvia “Toby” Young, of Seguin, passed from death unto eternal life on February 25, 2025.
Toby was born in McQueeney, Texas on February 9, 1949, to Gomecinda (Cortez) and Jose Young, Sr.
She is survived by her two sisters, Maria “Chita” Young Teneyuque and Ofelia “Faye” Young Gloria (husband Joe Gloria), a host of nephews and nieces and many other family and friends.
Toby is preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Anita Young, Lydia Young, Minerva “Minnie” Garcia, Lucia “Lucy” Aleman, and her brothers, Reinaldo Young, Rudolfo “Rudy” Young, and Joe Young, Jr.
Toby always brought a unique perspective to every connection she formed, whether it was professional or personal. She honed her professional skills for over 30 years at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, where she had an eye for detail and a commitment to excellence. Toby’s career was not limited to just Southwestern Bell, but she also used her artistic flair playing musical instruments at church and as a professional photographer. Her photos could always capture the beauty and joy of weddings, quinceaneras, parties, and a myriad of other festivities. Toby always had a passion for capturing life’s most precious moments; as in her life, she always wanted the beauty of each musical note and/or photograph to be presented in the best light possible.
Toby offered her strength beyond measure to those she loved. Known for her candid honesty and tireless work ethic, she was a loyal friend and a steadfast ally, always willing to lend a helping hand. Her unique personality set her apart. She valued authenticity and remained true to herself without concern for other’s opinions.
Toby was an avid fan of solitaire on the computer and football on her television, two of her favorite leisure pursuits that mirrored her independent
community.
Joyce’s passion for teaching extended far beyond retirement. As a resource teacher for Seguin ISD, she was patient, creative, and deeply invested in helping students unlock their potential. After retiring in 1996 with a personal goal of teaching until 90, she continued substitute teaching in San Antonio’s NEISD until 2018 when her aspiration was cut short by dementia.
Joyce’s boundless love for life, infectious smile, and unwavering devotion to her family and community leave a lasting legacy. She is survived by her daughters, Julie Bowerman Walker of San Antonio, and Jill Bowerman Jameson of Ramona, California; grandson, Jett Walker of Macomb, Illinois; and granddaughter, Laken Walker of Katy, Texas.

spirit and the confidence she held in herself.
A proud alumnus of Seguin High School’s Class of 1968, Toby has left a lasting impact in her beloved hometown. Her life’s journey has been marked by a rich blend of professional, personal achievements and endeavors.
Most of all, she was renowned for her unwavering faith in God. Her dedication to her faith and community was exemplified by her long-standing membership at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Seguin, Texas, where she served as a Guadalupana for many years.
Above all, she believed that Christ Jesus is The Way, The Truth, and The Life. She loves Jesus. Her hope is in Jesus. 2 Timothy 4:7-8 states, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.”

(Houston, TX) -- The deadly measles outbreak in Texas is affecting many children, with nearly one-in-three patients being under the age of four. Doctors say those who survive may face a lifetime of health problems. Dr. Sapna Singh, who is the Chief Medical officer at Texas Children’s Hospital, says her worst fear is a rare brain disorder that develops years after a measles infection. She says she agrees with Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Junior who writes in an op-ed that vaccines can protect kids and contribute to herd immunity.
(New York, NY) -- Health officials are reporting two measles cases in New York City - the only confirmed cases so far this year. There were 14 cases in the city last year and just one in 2023. Officials say the two new cases are not related. This, as a measles outbreak in Texas has sickened roughly 150 people and claimed the life of an unvaccinated child in West Texas. Officials urge anyone who’s not vaccinated against the measles to do so. They note that 90-percent of unvaccinated people are likely to get the disease if they’re around someone who has it.
(New York, NY) -- As measles outbreaks are reported in some states, pediatricians are reviewing guidelines with parents when it comes to measles vaccinations. Doctors advise that the first dose is given at 12 to 15 months of age and a second dose at four-to-six years of age. In certain situations-such as a local outbreak-vaccination may be advised for infants ages six to 12 months. During outbreaks, pediatricians note that the MMR vaccine typically given at four to six years, is often offered earlier and is considered the final dose in the series. Meantime doctors stress that the MMR vaccine is already recommended for international travel, but in light of current measles activity, it may be worth considering for certain domestic travel as well.
(Undated) -- More than half of adults around the world will be obese or overweight by 2050, according to a new report. The analysis, published in the Lancet, also predicts a third of children will be overweight. Currently, more than half of adults who are overweight live in eight countries: China, India, the U.S., Brazil, Russia, Mexico, Indonesia and Egypt. Experts warn that if the trends don’t change, the impact on health and economies will be massive.
