New Seguin Crossing Shopping Center on its way up

(Seguin) -- Everything looks to be on schedule for the construction of the new Seguin Crossing shopping center.

Crews can be seen working daily at the location just east of the Starbucks store near IH-10 and State Highway 123.

Josh Schneuker, the executive director of the Seguin Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) says as soon as the announcement was made, developers did not hesitate in getting started.

“They are hoping to start going vertical with some of the buildings here before the end of the month. That’s kind of their next big target in terms of the construction schedule but the hope and the goal is to have these stores open in time for the holiday season. So, really working hard with them to try to get that accomplished so they can be open just in time for Black Friday,” said Schneuker.

News of the shopping center was shared last year in September.

Man killed, another injured in two vehicle crash

(Seguin)-- A La Vernia man was killed Monday morning following a two-vehicle accident on South State Highway 46.

Seguin Police officials say the accident was reported at 7:52 a.m. in the 1600 block of Highway 46.

Upon arrival, officers observed that a 2013 Ford F-150, traveling northbound, had collided head-on with a 2007 Freightliner traveling southbound.

The 18-wheeler was fully engulfed in flames upon impact. The driver and sole occupant of the Freightliner was pulled to safety and later transported to Guadalupe Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening

injuries.

Killed was the driver of the Ford F-150. The victim is identified as Joshua Green, 26.

The vehicle’s sole passenger, Matthew Payton, 25, of Seguin, sustained critical injuries and was transported to Brooke Army Medical Center for treatment.

Officers with the Seguin Police Department’s Traffic Unit are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. Currently, they say no further details are available as to what caused the crash.

The fatal accident caused the shutdown of that stretch of highway for several hours.

Schertz PD investigates alleged kidnapping attempt

(Schertz) -- The search is on for an individual suspected of being involved in an attempted kidnapping in Shertz.

Schertz Police Officers say on Thursday, March 6 at approximately 4:13 p.m., the Schertz Police Department responded to a report of an alleged attempted kidnapping which had just occurred in the 11-hundred block of Oak Street. The alleged female victim, a 16-year-old, says she was walking home from

school when she stopped at a convenience store and saw the male subject inside the store. The female stated the

suspect spoke to her and asked why she was walking alone. The suspect then started chasing her and she called 9-1-1.

The Schertz Police Department immediately deployed personnel and resources and diligently worked with the local community members and the Guadalupe County Constables Office (Precinct 3) to develop leads and locate a person of interest.

Officials say although there is conflicting evidence with the alleged victim’s story, this continues to be an active investigation.

The Schertz PD does, however, want to reassure the citizens of Schertz that there appears to be no danger to the community. Anyone with information on the alleged incident is asked to contact the Schertz Police Department at 210-619-1245.

Missing man safely located thanks to drone technology

(Cibolo) -- Cibolo Police officials say officers Sunday night responded to a report of a missing 92-year-old man with dementia.

His family reported that he had left home without their knowledge.

Officers searched the area but were unable to immediately locate him. A drone was then deployed, which quickly spotted him in a nearby greenbelt.

Officers say thanks to the swift response and the use of technology; the man was safely reunited with his family within 25 minutes of the initial call.

City leaders say this is yet another example of how the Cibolo Police Department leverages innovative tools to protect the community.

Use of Cibolo’s drone equipment was also recently used to locate a man who was suspected of a carjacking in Schertz earlier this month.

That same technology was also used in assisting the Schertz Police Department during an active shooter response -- enhancing officer safety and tactical operations.

The new development will include several stores including a new Academy Sports & Outdoors, Hobby Lobby, James Avery and Five Below.

Schneuker says news of this new shopping center in the 1300 block of IH 10 E has definitely sparked the interest of other developers and looks forward to even more announcements in 2025.

“The great thing about this retail development is right now, it’s trending to be 100 percent preleased before everything opens. But it’s really acting like a catalyst. We are working with other retailers and developers on other projects and it’s really the name recognition behind some of the tenants that are coming out as part of this Seguin Crossing Development. They are really starting to generate interest. So, I think this is just kind of the tip of the iceberg and we are going to see a lot more retail coming in as a result of not only our growing population but the national retailers that are deciding to invest right here in Seguin,” said Schneuker.

Several other retail establishments are also in the coming to other parts of Seguin, including Spec’s Liquors, Take 5 Oil Change, O’Reilly’s Auto Parts, Chick-fil-A and Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Shopping, continued.

Open Letter to the City Council and City Manager of Seguin, TX

Dear Friends,

I have now lived in Seguin for over 50 years. In the last few years, I have watched and supported many City projects to improve our community, such as the Public Library, several park improvements, the Walnut Branch trail and downtown improvements. However, we are about to make a gross mistake with one aspect of the remodeling of Starcke Park Golf Course. Let me explain:

When the plan was accepted, we were to continue to have a driving range in the same location we have had one for 70+ years — the only change being that we were to install artificial mats at the east end that we would hit from occasionally, probably when the range was too wet or the grass on it was healing.

However, recently city staff has change that. We are configuring the range so that golfers will ONLY hit from the mats, never from the grass. If you are not a golfer, you may not see the significance. Golf on the course is played from grass; hitting from mats (while supposedly similar) is very different. It is very difficult to get better on grass by practicing from mats.

In addition, city staff has said that there will only be about 12 spaces to hit from. We frequently had more people than that practicing on the old range. Also hitting from mats is painful sometimes to hands, arms and backs because the mats are hard and unforgiving.

The major effect will be to our junior golfers. Each year dozens of kids practice at Starcke for high school teams, middle school teams, the First Tee Program and just for their own fun. It will be much more difficult for them to find practice space and to get better because of the restrictions city staff are putting on the driving range, which will be very sad because Seguin has a history of junior golf development of which we should be proud. In the future, not only will they compete with he adults for practice space but they

will NEVER hit from grass unless they happen to get a tee time and get on the course. Of course, one cannot easily practice on the course because other groups are playing.

Why are we doing this? City staff says the range is too short and some big hitters (very few) can hit their drivers so a ball rolls to the 8th fairway. I can say that in the thousands of rounds I have played there, I have never sen that as a problem, but if it is, there are many of possible solutions.

Many golf courses will small driving ranges such as The Quarry in San Antonio or Lions Municipal in Austin simply have a rule that you cannot hit a driver or a wood on the range. They put up a sign and people obey it. We could do that.

Golf ball manufacturers make restricted flight range balls that do not go as far. We could do that.

Some golf courses put a net up at the end of the range or wherever they do not want balls to go. We could do that. City staff says we cannot because we cannot build in a flood plain like the course, but we have had a net at the end of the range for decades, protecting the old cart barn, which has been moved now. Also minor exemptions can be obtained under the flood plain rules. Certainly a new which does not restrict water flow would qualify.

I understand we ought to hit from the mats sometimes, particularly to encourage the growth of grass on the driving range tee. But not solely.

Golfers love driving ranges because they help you get better; city staff does not like them because they are a lot of work. We need our leadership to motivate the staff and continue to support junior golf and our driving range. I hear so many compliments about our other city improvement projects, which have enhanced Seguin’s reputation. Why should we spend multiple millions of dollars on the golf course but end up with less than we have now?

Sincerely,

Sofge

George William Sofge was born in Eldorado, Texas, on September 25, 1938 to Cramer and Mary Pearl (Doyle) Sofge. He left this life on March 7, 2025 for a better, pain-free place.

George learned the value of hard work early in life, beginning his adult experiences as a partner with his father in a custom combining and livestock hauling business. It was from this career path that he learned how to operate heavy equipment and make on-the-fly mechanical repairs. He learned the skills needed to maneuver heavy trucks loaded with livestock, never failing to deliver the load safely.

Recognizing that there might be another career open to him, George decided to enroll in Southwest Texas State Teachers College. Those years also brought to his life a wife (Leslie Virginia Dilworth) and two muchloved children, Rebecca Genelle and William John. After earning a degree in education with a major in chemistry and a minor in biology, he began the second phase of his work life, teaching (and sometimes coaching) at Pleasanton, Prairie Lea, Boling, Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City and finally at East Central school districts. Along the way, he also managed to earn a master’s degree in school administration, a second master’s degree in school counseling,

Brieden

Floyd Lester Brieden, Jr., age 77 of Rocksprings, Texas, formerly of Kingsbury, passed away on March 9, 2025. Lester was born on May 16, 1947 in Corpus Christi, Texas, to Frances (Prather) and Floyd Lester Brieden, Sr.

Lester is preceded in death by his wife, Diane Margaret Brieden, his daughter, Lori Clark, his parents, brother Everett Brieden, and son-in-law, Johnny DeLeon.

Survivors include his son, Andrew “Andy” Lester Brieden and wife Whitney; daughter, Vicki Black; son-in-law, Lennie

and adding a certification for vocational counseling to his credentials.

A thirty-year career in education and retirement led to the life he had always longed for --- owning a piece of land, tending to his cattle, caring for pastures, and finding joy in simple, earth-bound pleasure. This last career revealed a facet to George’s personality that was as grounding and real as the soil under his boots.

In all of his careers, the most important thing to George was the time he spent with his family. A man who was usually quiet, he nevertheless found many ways to express his love for those he held dear to his heart.

George was predeceased by his parents and his older brother Roger Sofge. He leaves behind his wife of 58 years Leslie Virginia (Ginger), daughter Rebecca Lockwood, son Wm. John Sofge, grandsons Travis, Andrew and Grant Lockwood, and great-granddaughters Huxley and Josie Lockwood. George Sofge will be greatly missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Visitation is scheduled at Goetz Funeral Home in Seguin for March 12, 2025 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. and on March 13, 2025 from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. The funeral service will be conducted on March 13, 2025 at 10:00 a.m., also at Goetz Funeral Home. Alaska, England, and several bases throughout the United States. She enjoyed her visits to Hawaii and Germany in the 80’s while visiting her son and family. Germany was her favorite; she was fluent in German and had a wonderful time talking with the locals she had the pleasure of meeting. She thoroughly enjoyed life and was a great cook, but baking was always a “favorite passion” of hers. She had a keen sense of humor and was quick to joke with those around her. She was always surrounded by laughter and is now surrounded with her husband and all of those who preceded her in death.

When she was around 95, she heard on TV that some woman drank a shot of whiskey every day and that is why she had lived so long. So, she decided to try it. Mind you, this coming from a woman who never drank whiskey and never drank much alcohol in her life except an occasional beer or wine. So, her doctor gave the nursing home a prescription to have a daily shot. This became the joke of the nursing home about her and her whiskey. Mind you, it was a good thing, and she did not really like how whiskey tasted, but she always said it was good for her pain. What pain? She only talked about pain when she talked about whiskey!

DOGE Gains Access To Sensitive Child Support Database

Doctors Provide Facts On Shots Versus Supplements

(Houston, TX) -- Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Junior is speaking out about the measles outbreak in Texas, suggesting that Vitamin-A can “dramatically” reduce deaths. Doctors are afraid that some parents might take this as meaning the supplement is the same as the vaccine. Dr. Sapna Singh at Texas Children’s Hospital says there is not a single study that suggests vitamins can prevent infections. There are nearly 200-measles cases in Texas, including a death. The epicenter remains a section of West Texas with the lowest vaccination rates in the state.
