Caterpillar, NB Food Bank to host weekend food distribution event

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera because the holidays are here, they wanted to do another one this (Seguin) -- Caterpillar and its coming December and they are able employees are stepping up to lend us their facility as well as to make sure local families support us with their volunteers. get the food they need this You know in this tough times where month. Caterpillar will be teaming up with the New Braunfels Food Bank by hosting a food distribution event this Saturday outside its Seguin facility at 1720 W. Kingsbury St. Sign-up for that distribution is now underway. Junaris Abueg, the program’s manager for the New Braunfels Food Bank, says they are grateful to Caterpillar for again stepping up to the plate and helping meet the needs of local families .

people are affected with COVID and at the same time, the holidays are coming, so we teamed up and we are determined to serve at least 1,000 families to 1,500 families in Guadalupe County,” said Abueg.

“Caterpillar is actually a good partner with the New Braunfels Food Bank. They have actually done one last May and

The food distribution event this weekend, however, is not just for residents of Guadalupe County. Abueg says they hope to serve families from throughout the area. “Although, we are trying to serve the Guadalupe County, we are also trying to serve the nearby counties. So, if people from Comal, for example, want to access it, they are more than welcome to come to this food distribution, people in Gonzales. We are here to serve and we have enough for those families,” said Abueg. Abueg says the group is optimistic in reaching even more families now that the food distribution event is on a Saturday. TLU Vespers to debut virtually this holiday season “Vespers is such a special tradition for TLU and this year, it’s even more special because it’s the 80th anniversary of this service and so in true 2020 format, our school of music is taking the Vespers service of word and music virtual and it will be featured on TLU’s YouTube channel this year, www.youtube. txlutheran and it will be the featured video starting on Dec. 4 probably in the evening and will be featured for several days,” said Ford.

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- TLU isn’t letting the pandemic stop it from providing its annual gift to the community. In fact, the pandemic this year will allow Texas Lutheran University to share the sounds of its Christmas Vespers with an even larger audience. Ashlie Ford, the director of marketing and communications for Texas Lutheran University, says beginning today, the Christmas tradition will be shared virtually so that anyone, anywhere can enjoy the holiday season.

Ford says this year’s 2020 Vesper’s theme is “Sing Darkness to Light.” She adds that the virtual Christmas Vespers will use some clips from 2019 in addition to performances recorded this semester during the coronavirus. Ford says organizers say, “you will see a stark difference between where our world was almost a year ago and today.” “I think that kind of in itself talks about everything that has been going on in 2020 and all of the different challenges and difficulties we all face as a university, as a community, as a nation and so I think our school of music has done an absolutely wonderful

job preparing this virtual service and they have been impacted greatly by COVID because performing, singing, playing instruments have been high risk so they have been following very strict precautions and rehearsing very safely to make sure that they can still offer this tradition that so many people look forward to this year,” said Ford. Traditionally, a Vespers performance is held each day during the first weekend in December. Another live performance is also held the following weekend in Austin. However, this year, Ford says TLU is grateful that the free, but ticket required event is now a performance for a larger audience to enjoy. “I think that’s one of the things that is good about everything going on this year. It’s a silver lining that instead of having to get tickets and come in person, it will be accessible virtually to a larger audience and hopefully, we gain some new people who are inspired and love Vespers and will continue to be people that will start coming to our campus for the service in the future years,” said Ford. Again, the performance will be made available late Friday on TLU’s YouTube channel. Again, the link is www.youtube.txlutheran.com.

Downtown businesses to host Cocoa Open Houses beginning this weekend A few commemorative mugs still available at local stores By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) — Local businesses will be keeping you warm as you shop downtown for all your holiday needs. Beginning this weekend, downtown businesses will each take turns hosting Cocoa Open Houses. Kyle Kramm, the director of the Seguin Main Street Program and CVB, says the series of open houses is an alternative to its “beloved” Cocoa Sip ‘n Stroll and North Pole Stroll events in downtown Seguin.

add a little something extra when you know you come downtown to do your Christmas shopping,” said Kramm. The first round of Cocoa Open Houses gets underway this Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. Featured stores include but not limited to Gift and Gourmet, Vogue Shoes and The Shop at Design Associates. A complete list of all the participating stores can be found at SeguinToday.com.

“Early on, we decided that we wouldn’t be able to do our traditional Sip ‘n Stroll. We just didn’t’ feel it was safe to have about 2,000 people out walking the sidewalks in downtown and then drinking all the hot cocoa. If there was a way to safely drink hot cocoa through a mask, I think we’d try to figure out something but because people would be having to take off their mask on and off to keep tasting cocoa, we decided that there was not a safe way to do. That’s when we came up with the Cocoa Open Houses so we could do it kind of on a smaller scale since people are already going to be out doing their Christmas shopping and it’s just adding a little bit of cocoa while you are out doing your Christmas shopping on the weekend,” said Kramm Kramm says one important piece of the annual tradition, however, will be the same. He says that is the purchase and use of this year’s commemorative cocoa mug that depicts the former Guadalupe County Courthouse “We are getting low so we’ve got a couple of stores that still have some but there will be some stores that will be selling them this weekend but a lot of them have already run out so we do encourage you to get out and get your mug now if you are still interested. They are $15 each and it’s cash or check. You don’t need that mug with you on Saturday or Sunday when you come to the open houses but it is encouraged to bring their own mug,” said Kramm. Kramm says the stores will be taking extra precautions and enforcing their occupancy limits while hosting their open house. He says several will even be serving their cocoa outside in front of their stores so that you can keep your mask on while you are inside the store. “We’ve got five businesses on Saturday, Dec. 5, another five on Sunday, Dec. 6 and then on Saturday, Dec. 12, we are going to have six businesses participating and so they will be serving some homemade hot cocoa, some are going to have specials, some are going to be having some vendors and so each business is doing a little something different during their open house and so it’s just to

“This is actually the very first Saturday distribution that we will be conducting. Most of our distributions are done through the week and for the past, I would say, eight months, we’ve been doing it on a Thursday. However, this time around, it is going to be a Saturday. That’s one of the scheduled (days) that Caterpillar can accommodate us and also, we want to try out

Saturday. I know that a lot of folks are back to their normal routine. They are back to work.

Some of the kids are going back to school. We want to try Saturday just to accommodate for those that could not make it through the weekday,” said Abueg. The food distribution event will be held on Saturday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. outside

Caterpillar. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged. Registration is available online at nbfoodbank.org or by calling 830-327-6000 between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. The deadline to ensure food is noon Friday. Food bank volunteers say folks who stop by without registering will still be helped but are advised that the process may take a little while longer.

Matadors visit Tigers with title share, No. 2 playoff seed at stake, Friday’s game to air on KWED (Dripping Springs) - Seguin plays for a share of the District 12-5A-Division I championship and hosting rights in the first round of the UIL football playoffs Friday when the Matadors conclude the regular season with a visit to district co-leader Dripping Springs.

6-0) and New Braunfels-Canyon (8-1, 5-1), assuming the Cougars defeat Buda-Johnson. The point system that takes forfeits vs. onfield wins into account would give Canyon the top seed, Seguin No. 2, and the Tigers No. 3 in that scenario.

teammates like Tristan Moreno (47 rec., 811 yds., 9 TD) and Marques Washington (867 rushing yds., 302 rec. yds., 13 total TD) into Friday’s matchup.

Rodriguez threw six touchdown passes in last Friday’s 49-7 win over Kyle-Lehman to lift his season total to 26, the most my any Seguin A Seguin win would move the Matadors (6- The Matadors ride the hot hand of senior quarterback this century. The mark is believed 2, 5-1) into a three-way tie for first place in quarterback Micah Rodriguez (.770 comp., to be a single-season school record, but complete the standings with Dripping Springs (8-2, 1,854 passing yds., 26 TD) and explosive individual stats from all seasons have not been archived. “He’s so efficient and smart with the football, it makes play-calling a lot easier, because you’re not afraid of him making mistakes,” Seguin head coach Travis Bush said of Rodriguez. “You can take some chances, and take some risks, and try to create some explosive plays knowing if they’re not there he’s going to check it down, or he’s going to run it - he’s going to be smart with the football. So it’s allowed us overall to be a lot more explosive offensively, I believe, because we are able to take those chances.” Dripping Springs has only played in seven onfield games, with forfeit wins over McCollum, San Antonio-Veterans Memorial, and Harlandale. The Tigers, led by sixth-year head coach Galen Zimmerman, cruised to a 44-24 win over BudaJohnson last Friday. The Dripping Springs offense features the 2019 District MVP in running-back/ receiver Preston Seguin head coach Travis Bush and linebackers John Michael Mata (10) and Alford (836 rushing yds., 401 rec. yds., 16 total TD) Allen Martinez (11) hope to have plenty to cheer about after Friday’s regular and the reigning District Offensive MVP in receiver Cameron O’Bannon (51 rec., 976 yds., 14 TD). season finale in Dripping Springs. Photo by Andie Rangel.

The Tigers’ least experienced offensive leader is sophomore quarterback Austin Novosad, who has completed 63.6 percent of his passes for 1,878 yards, 26 touchdowns, and only one interception in six appearances. Bush says Novosad is an underclassman in name only. “He’s very similar to Micah, you know, he’s going to protect the football, he’s going to do some things with his feet, but he’s very efficient,” Bush said. “He does a great job in the pocket getting the ball to those receivers. They’re very versatile, and they’ve got weapons at all angles, so it’s going to boil down to not giving up the big play, and trying to force some turnovers as well.” The Seguin defense has become a takeaway machine, forcing at least three turnovers in each of the past three games for a total of 18 on the season and a turnover margin of plus-12. Statistical leaders on that side of the ball include linebacker Allen Martinez (74 tackles), defensive end Ian Box (12 TFL, 7.5 sacks), and safety Michael Cornelius (2 Int.). The Dripping Springs defense lost six All-District seniors to graduation from the 2019 team. The unit’s 2020 leaders include linebacker Spencer Dance (65 tackles) and defensive back Shel Hudson (5 Int.). Friday’s game in Dripping Springs will air live on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Pre-game coverage starts at 6:50 with the Navarro Coach’s Show.

Navarro - Wimberley rivalry logs latest chapter in regional final clash includes a 27-6 win over Smithville, a 54-14 dismantling of Hondo, and a 35-14 thumping of Sinton. Senior quarterback Matthew Tippie leads the Texans’ balanced offensive attack with 3,312 passing yards and 32 touchdowns. Junior tailback Moses Wray enters Friday with 896 rushing yards and 10 scores, while Ty Pruett (45 rec., 873 yds., 11 TD) and Jaxon Watts (42 rec., 794 yds., 8 TD) lead the receiving corps.

Andrew Guerra (26), Mark Wozniak (6), and the rest of the Navarro defense look to corral Wimberley’s offense for the second time this season in Friday’s regional title game. Photo by Jacqueline Springs. (Boerne) - Navarro looks to avoid a repeat of its 2019 season series with Wimberley when the two district rivals square off Friday night for the 2020 4A Division II Region IV championship at Boerne ISD Stadium. The Panthers, 11-2 in Rod Blount’s third season as head coach after a 28-7 regional semifinal win over Navasota, held off the Texans 24-22 in the Week 9 meeting that decided the District 14-4A-Division II

championship at Erwin-Lee Field. Navarro dominated last year’s district game 42-14, only to see Wimberley turn the tables and eliminate the Panthers by the same score in the regional final rematch at the Alamodome. The 2020 Texans are 11-3 in Doug Warren’s eighth season as head coach. Wimberley is peaking at the right time, with a three-game playoff run that

As was the case in the October win, Navarro looks to keep that arsenal sidelined by controlling the clock with its bruising Slot-T rushing attack. The Panthers churned out 326 rushing yards and 7.1 per carry in Week 9, with Sam Muniga exploding for 152 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries, and Brody Whitson contributing 110 yards on 14 carries. Those two have been the most prolific among Navarro’s deep stable of backs this season. Muniga enters Friday with 1,180 rushing yards, 320 receiving yards, and 16 total touchdowns. Whitson follows with 946 yards and 15 scores. Fullback Zeke Campos (8 TDs) ran for team-high 121 yards in the regional semis against Navasota. Blount knows that duplicating or surpassing October’s production will be a challenge in the rematch against Wimberley’s defense. “You’ve got to be patient with them,” Blount

said. “They’re extremely athletic. Fast defense. They don’t give up very many big plays. They want to try to make you drive it and make the mistakes. We’ve got to make sure that we protect the football, and are doing things right, and not putting ourselves in bad positions. We’ve got to be able to run the ball, and we’ve also got to be able to hit some of our play-action passes.” Navarro’s play-action passing game has become a weapon opposing defenses have to account for. Junior quarterback Nick Billings has completed 56 percent of his throws for 789 yards and 10 touchdowns. The Navarro defense intercepted Tippie twice (both by Sam Muniga) in the October meeting and forced some key turnovers in last week’s win over Navasota, with All-State safety Mark Wozniak returning a fumble for a touchdown and fellow DB Sebastian Sneed nabbing an interception to end a Rattlers’ scoring threat early in the fourth quarter. Friday marks Navarro’s third straight appearance in the fourth round of the 4A Division II playoffs and the fourth in the last five seasons. The opening kickoff at Boerne ISD Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m. The Panther Report with Coach Blount will air at 6:50 on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com before the Seguin Dripping Springs broadcast.

Stoll Our loving mother, Mary Ann Rea Stoll, gave her whole heart passing away Wednesday November 25, 2020 in New Braunfels, Texas. She was born on December 24, 1954 to Larry and Doris Rea at Pepperrell AFB, St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada and proudly received her naturalization certificate of citizenship on November 22, 1963 while the family was stationed in Glasgow AFB in Montana. Growing up in a United States Air Force military family alongside her brothers and sister, she had the opportunity to experience many places including Japan where she graduated Chofu High School in 1973. Her high achieving approach led to many awards and accolades on her path to five college degrees mainly centered around the field of education as a lifetime certified reading specialist. She also obtained a Juris Doctor degree from UMKC Law while raising her two young children, Aaron and Alicia, in St. Joseph, Missouri. Her choice to devote herself to teaching followed a passion to help children become successful. She had a special heart for students facing tough home life challenges, and uniquely was able to reach many who had been written off by others. This world will never know the collective impact of her humble generosity, but thankfully each individual will in their own heart. She is preceded in death by her grandparents George and Marie (Morgan) Borkowski of St. Joseph, Missouri and Neal and Mary (Hollowell) Rea of Arkansas as well as her past husband and children’s father Fred H.
