Five minutes in November: TLU athletic trainer, students save a life

(Seguin) – In this season of giving back and sharing kindness and favor, here’s a heartwarming and uplifting story out of Texas Lutheran University.

It was just another Saturday in November. The TLU women’s basketball team was playing Howard Payne on the home court at Memorial Gymnasium. The first half of the game had gone smoothly—in fact, the Bulldogs would end up rebounding from the loss of their previous game and win the day 78-62.

But shortly before the start of the second half, one of the game officials collapsed.

“I first remember hearing yelling and panic amongst the players warming up, as well as the crowd at the game,” said TLU Athletic Trainer Nicole Curtis. When she noticed the man on the ground on the other side of the court, she and Efrain Huerta, the senior kinesiology-athletic training major who was working the game with her, rushed over.

Within moments, the two conducted a primary assessment, determined that

CPR was necessary, and activated EMS.

As it happened, a healthcare provider was among the spectators, and also came down to assist with CPR.

“Efrain was prepared with the AED on hand as I delivered five rounds of compressions and two shocks using the AED,” said Curtis.

“The silence that filled the gym during what seemed like a really long time ended in a gasp of relief as the patient regained responsiveness.”

Cameron Salas, another athletic training student in TLU’s master’s program who was scheduled to work the men’s basketball game that evening, heard about what was going on.

Guadalupe County extends burn ban order

(Seguin) – Residents will have to wait a little while longer before they can resume outdooring burning in the unincorporated areas of Guadalupe County. County commissioners on Tuesday voted to extend the existing order prohibiting outdoor burning. The 90-day extension will officially continue the order that was originally set to expire on Tuesday, Dec. 31.

Guadalupe County Judge Kyle Kutscher says while surrounding areas are reporting various degrees of drought conditions, it’s important to manage what most of the residents in Guadalupe County are experiencing.

“We’ve had it sprinkle and be foggy and have high humidity for a number of days, so it makes people think ‘hey, it’s a lot different than it was. The concern is always telling people that they can’t do something with their property that they want to do. The dangerous thing is if everything is dormant, everything has either frozen or

burnt or turned already from a little frost – we have had limited rain. It creates a challenge,” said Kutscher.

Not only are conditions unsafe but the sale of fireworks over the holiday season also played a factor in the court’s overall decision. Although the court extended the burn ban, Commissioner Pct. 1 Greg Seidenberger reminded the public that things could still change should there be an improvement.

“I think we should approve the extension and then leave it up to the discretion. If we do get some rain, then between the judge and the fire marshal and a couple of phone calls, I think we can lift it if it bears lifting. But I really think the prudent thing to do is extend it,” said Seidenberger.

Those with additional questions are encouraged to call the Guadalupe County Emergency Management Office at 830-303-8856.

Food drive set for this weekend, registration deadline this Thursday

(Seguin) -- Families needing some assistance with food are reminded to sign up as soon as possible for the final food distribution of the year.

Guadalupe County this Saturday will be teaming up with the Seguin ISD and the San Antonio Food Bank for its holiday distribution event in the Seguin ISD Administrative Building parking lot located next door to Arlan’s Grocery.

Patrick Pinder, the Guadalupe County Emergency Management Coordinator, says they purposely planned for this date just before the holiday.

“The San Antonio Food Bank and the Seguin ISD and the county partnered for another food distribution at the Seguin Administration Office this year. We planned on this site and this location in Seguin right before Christmas. I know going into Christmas break for a lot of people, food is a struggle and so we planned it for this weekend. So, people that are seeking some assistance with food can go online and register to sign up to get some food,” said Pinder.

Pinder says registration is free and simple. He says the purpose is to ensure enough food for those who need it.

“You sign up online and it asks you a few questions through the food bank and it’s more than a survey. But it doesn’t matter what your status is employed, unemployed, the food is being passed out to those who need the food service. I don’t know what the food will be this weekend. I don’t know until later this week but typically, we try to get some fresh produce. We try to get some sort of bread, some sort of milk product – and just try to get those kinds of things. But the things that are distributed out in these types of food distributions are things that folks are going to enjoy, and you can make a good descent meal out of it. That’s one of the things that is most important. You are not going to get products that you aren’t going to get

TLU, continued.

“He took the initiative to flag down and meet EMS outside of the gym,” said Curtis.

In the end, the collective quick actions of the group saved the day: the patient was stabilized, had regained consciousness, and was verbally responsive by the time EMS arrived. It all happened in the space of about five minutes. “As EMS personnel escorted the patient to the hospital for further evaluation and treatment, I could not help but feel relieved, yet mentally

a good meal for the family and the stuff that you are going to get is going to feed a good family – a family of five, six people – for a couple of days,” said Pinder.

Pinder says food distributions are held every day and encourages families to check with the San Antonio Food Bank when they need assistance.

“If you go to the San Antonio Food Bank’s website, you can find food distributions throughout the area not only in Guadalupe County but also in San Antonio. Everyday they have a food distribution somewhere so ours just happens to be that day. There will be others going on. If you are from Guadalupe County, Comal County or any surrounding area, anybody can come in and receive food,” said Pinder.

The food distribution event will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 21 at the Seguin ISD Central Office located at 1221 E. Kingsbury St.

QR codes and links to register or volunteer can be found on various Facebook pages including KWED Radio, the Guadalupe County Emergency Management Office, the Seguin ISD and the San Antonio Food Bank.

exhausted,” said Curtis. “I believe that my training and continued practice in first aid and CPR gave me the mental strength to provide the proper care in this emergency situation without faulting under its pressure and intensity.”

Athletic trainers—and those studying to become athletic trainers—are equipped for exactly these kinds of situations. And though no one wants to be put to the test in a real-life emergency, it would be impossible to quantify the value of putting into practice lessons learned in the classroom

and having the chance to save a life.

“As athletic trainers, we strive to always be prepared for any situation that may come our way, and I am proud to say that our preparedness and training paid off and contributed significantly to the positive outcome of this medical emergency,” said Curtis.

Head Women’s Basketball Coach Troy Patterson has followed up with the official since the incident and reports that after being cared for at the hospital, he was released and is now at home recovering with his family.

Landvatter

Roderick “Ric” Jon Landvatter, age 73, was born January 31, 1951, to William (Bill) and Doris Wigren Landvatter in Redmond, Washington. He passed to his eternal home on December 10, 2024. Ric was the third of four children. Faith Lutheran in Redmond was the family’s church where he began his journey to having a relationship with Jesus Christ. Surrounded by grandparents, parents, siblings, aunts, uncles and cousins, he was raised in a loving and close-knit family. Ric graduated from Redmond High School in 1969, and attended Pacific Lutheran University. Ric was blessed with the birth of his two sons, Roderick and Matthew. Experiencing such great love for his sons is but a drop in the bucket when it came to the love God has for us. Ric proudly served his country for six years in the United States Air Force.

Ric’s life could be divided into two phases—the one before the cancer diagnosis and the one after. In 2006, Ric was diagnosed with a very fastgrowing prostate cancer. Ric drove to his church and wrestled with God over the news of the diagnosis. What came out of that battle changed the rest of Ric’s life. He gave it over to God and decided to trust the outcome to the One who gave him life and now held his life in HIS hands. The peace that came over him stayed with him through all the trials yet to come. The first oncology doctor Ric met with gave him a prognosis of 6 months. That was 18 years ago. God had other plans for Ric.

The most amazing gift in the life after cancer diagnosis was finding the love of his life, Diana, who loved the Lord as much as Ric did. As their relationship grew, they made many wonderful memories together. Many centered around their love of travel. They enjoyed attending the 2009 Tour de France as well as following it on tv. They took many cruises

and loved camping with their San Antonio Road Runners RV club. Last Christmas found them in Guadalupe in the Southern Caribbean.

Two gifts God gave Ric were the ability to sing and a love for people. Ric got the most joy when using those gifts. He often sang at church or in musicals and thoroughly enjoyed directing a choir. For several years he was a part of Kairos Prison Ministry that helped many in prison find freedom through a relationship with Jesus. Ric also became a volunteer hospital chaplain where he could encourage others with the love of Jesus. Ric often spoke of feeling the closest to God when he was serving him. Ric never missed an opportunity to share his love of Jesus or Jesus’ love for the one he was talking with. Ric’s mission was to pray for the concerns of others.

Ric is survived by his wife Diana, children Rick and wife Erin Landvatter, Matthew and wife Wendy Landvatter, Adam and wife Nicole Strom, Sara and wife Vanessa Strom, his grandchildren Moira, James and Isaiah, and his siblings, Cathy, Gary and Jeff along with many nephews and nieces.

Obesity Rate Among US Adults Fell In 2023

(Atlanta, GA) -- For the first time in over a decade U.S adults had lower rates of obesity in 2023. A study published on Friday revealed that nationally, obesity dropped from 46 percent in 2022 to 45.6 percent in 2023. The study also found a significant decrease of obesity in the South, including older adult women, ages 66 to 75. More than 16-million adults were included in the study from the years of 2013 to 2023. In September the CDC reported that obesity in the U.S. was not rising.

Mitch McConnell Criticizes RFK Jr.’s “Effort To Undermine” Polio Vaccine

(Washington, DC) -- Mitch McConnell is speaking out after it was reported a lawyer linked to RFK Jr. petitioned the government to revoke approval of the polio vaccine. McConnell criticized “specious disinformation that threatens the advance of lifesaving medical progress.” The Senate Republican leader is also a polio survivor, and added that “efforts to undermine public confidence in proven cures are not just uninformed - they’re dangerous.” McConnell then warned that anyone who needs Senate approval to be in Donald Trump’s administration “would do well to steer clear of even the appearance of association with such efforts.” His comments were clearly directed towards Kennedy, Trump’s choice to head the Department of Health.

Smoke From Canadian Wildfires Lead Surge In Heart/ Lung Problems

(North Bethesda, MD) -- Poor air quality and wildfire smoke exposure have been linked to health problems but a new study reveals that distance is not always helpful. The University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing found that visits for heart and lung issues were almost 20-percent higher for six days in June 2023. The cause for the spike was smoke from Western Canadian wildfires in the summer of 2023 that swept two-thousand miles into the U.S. creating extremely poor air quality in Baltimore and the surrounding areas. Those six days exceeded the EPA’s standards for safe air quality in all of Maryland’s counties..

2 Cats Die From Possible H5 Bird Flu

(Los Angeles, CA) -- Two cats are dead after possibly coming down with H5 bird flu in Los Angeles County. On Thursday, public health officials announced the cats died after drinking recalled raw milk. The milk was produced by Raw Farm LLC, which voluntarily recalled all of its milk and cream products earlier this month due to a risk of bird flu contamination. The L.A. County Department of Public Health is waiting for confirmation of the cause of the cats’ death. Officials say the risk of H5 bird flu in L.A. County is still low.
