Man identified in Friday night standoff with sheriff's deputies By Darren Dunn (Guadalupe County) -- Guadalupe County Sheriff Arnold Zwicke says a standoff, that lasted for more than three and half hours, ended peacefully on Friday night in the Las Brisas subdivision off State Highway 46 in the Seguin area. The suspect, identified as 41-year-old Ryan Dow Stephens, surrendered to authorities around 9:30 p.m. Friday after barricading himself inside a home located in the 300 block of Las Brisas Boulevard. Sheriff Zwicke says they were called out to the area just before 6 p.m. Friday on a call of a domestic dispute between a man and a woman in the area. Deputies encountered Stephens in route to the call and tried to pull him over. Zwicke says the man struck a patrol vehicle in an attempt to flee to his home in Las Brisas. Deputies opened fire at the suspect and the charging vehicle, but he managed to get home without injury. Ryan Dow Stephens
Sheriff Zwicke says the SWAT team responded, as well as negotiators, who spent the next few hours trying to diffuse the situation, and trying to coax Stephens to come out peacefully. Stephens was alone inside the home during the ordeal. He eventually came out, and he was arrested without further incident.

Mike, a two-year-old Belgian Shepherd, was the perfect match for his handler, Officer Justin Mendoza. Mike was born in the Czech Republic in July of 2017 and received his training at Worldwide K-9 in Boerne, Texas. Mike is a single purpose narcotics dog trained to detect Marijuana, Heroin, Cocaine, Methamphetamine and derivatives of these drugs. Currently the Seguin Police Department has two K9s with the anticipation of eventually adding a third one. K-9s are a valuable tool in law enforcement. That's according to Seguin Police Chief Terry Nichols. "These dedicated K-9s are part of our police family. We are proud to have K-9 Mike join the Seguin Police Department team and serve our community by helping remove illegal narcotics from the street," said Nichols.
The search is still on for burglar trio Seguin PD hoping community can identify burglary suspects (Seguin) -- The Seguin PD is hoping that the release of a surveillance video taken from a pair of local pharmacies will help in identifying a trio of suspects who made their way into both businesses and made their debut in front of their cameras.
The Seguin Police Department recently hosted a swearing in ceremony welcoming Mike and thanking the nonprofit groups for their generous contribution to the department.
Seguin Police officials say on Saturday, July 27, officers responded to the Ten-Minute Pharmacy located at 254 S. State Highway 123 Bypass and Cedar View Medical Supply located at 519 N. King St. in reference to a burglary.
These organizations included the Seguin Police Department's Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association (CPAAA), Guadalupe County Crime Stoppers, Seguin Sunrise Lions Club, Cattlemen's Association, Seguin Noon Lions Club and Walmart # 901.
Surveillance cameras captured three subjects, at both locations, wearing hoodies. The suspects are seen shattering the glass to make entry into the buildings.

They each were also wearing what appears to be sweat pants with hoodies and dark colored shoes. If you have information about this crime, contact detectives at 830-379-2123. GRMC hosting food drive this weekend, vouchers required GRMC continued from page 1 "We are trying to collaborate to try to address the food insecurity that we have in our community. We know that it is there and it's just a matter of trying to collaborate together and figure out a solution where maybe we could provide food not just at these distributions but maybe we can get to a point where it would be available more often whether it be like a permanent place that kind of thing. Some people would say do you want a food bank? Well, I'd like a food bank but then also to address the mental and also the diabetic clinic kind of thing because when people have chronic conditions, food is part of it and if they know how to eat or what to eat. That will only benefit them in becoming a healthier person," said Bennett.
be recognized is Tyson. They gave a large distribution to the San Antonio Food Bank and in return, that was like one distribution a month. Now, we did not host all of those because it was for Guadalupe County and they chose where they needed the distributions to be and they reached out to other distribution spots. We had many of those distributions and the other distributions were held in Redwood," said Bennett.
GRMC's commitment to feeding families began with a backpack program in which students at local schools were provided food to take home every Friday or as scheduled. Bennett says GRMC not only raises money for the San Antonio Food Bank through its annual employee Bowl-A-Thon but it often partners up with various organizations to help distribute thousands of pounds of food that is then delivered by the food bank to the community. Funds from the bowl-a-thon, again, go to support the annual distributions -- two of which are held at GRMC and two that are hosted at Faith Lutheran Church who also donates to the SA Food Bank.
"All you have to do is fill out the voucher itself and that information is really just for the food bank and when you have that completed, you are just ready to come and pick up food and we want anybody that needs the help (to come). It does not matter if you can pick up for a person that can't drive. That would be fantastic. So, we just want to reach out and help relieve people that are in that situation," said Bennett.
Bennett says the hospital is always committed to rolling up its sleeves and teaming up with other community partners. The hospital recently paired up with the New Braunfels Elks Lodge and the New Braunfels Food Bank a couple of weeks ago. "I just think that they are a very generous organization. They reached out to us and said 'hey, we would really like to do a food drive, can you coordinate it? Of course, we said 'yes' and we take it from there. The hospital, as I said, we have done this for many years and it's just one of the things that we do," said Bennett.
As for this weekend, Bennett says getting assistance with food is easy. She says vouchers will be handed out beginning today at the cashier's window located in the hospital's Central Entrance. She says vouchers are always available starting on the Tuesday before a Saturday drive.
This Saturday's food drive will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. behind the GRMC building. Again, vouchers must be picked up in advance. Bennett says food is an important aspect to healthy living and is combated with a pair of opportunities at the hospital. When it comes to food distribution drives, many have described GRMC as being the "hub" for such efforts. Bennett says it's GRMC's mission to just ensure that residents don't go hungry. "The Elks Lodge, actually, they've done this now two times and they've said it was successful and they want to do it again. So, when people reach out and want to do that, we definitely have the space to do it and we welcome it. Another company that needs to
Bennett notes the important connection between healthy food and healthy living, and encourages anyone who wants to make a difference in the health of our community to consider giving in one of two ways. One is by supporting the Guadalupe Clinic through a donation to Guadalupe Regional Medical Foundation (grmedfoundation.org), and another is by sponsoring a food distribution in Seguin through Monica Borrego at the San Antonio Food Bank at (830) 327-6011.

Medical Bills Blamed For Murder-Suicide
FDA Investigates Dozens Of Seizures Possibly Linked To E-Cigarettes
(Ferndale, WA) -- Medical bills are believed to be the cause of a murder-suicide in Washington state.
(Silver Spring, MD) -- The FDA is investigating dozens of seizures possibly linked to e-cigarettes. FDA officials say they're looking into 127 reports of seizures, fainting, tremors or other neurological issues dating back to 2010.
The Whatcom County Sheriff's Office says an elderly couple found dead earlier this week left behind notes expressing concerns about how to pay for medical care. Police say 77 year old Brian Jones called 911 to relay his plan and to let authorities know where to find the bodies.
Bayer Prepared To Pay $8 Billion To Settle Roundup Lawsuits (Whippany, NJ) -- Bayer is willing to pay as much as eight-billion-dollars to settle more than 18thousand lawsuits that allege its Roundup herbicide causes cancer. The Los Angeles Times is reporting talks are ongoing between the German drug and chemical giant and attorneys for the plaintiffs and that they could take months to complete. The big sticking point seems to be how to compensate people who come down with cancer in the future. Lawyers for the plaintiffs are seeking more than ten billion dollars in compensation.
Three dozen calls to Poison Control Centers specifically mentioned vaping. Several cases involved e-cigarette products used with amphetamine and marijuana.
NY Health Official Calls Deadly Mosquito Virus An "Imminent Threat" (Manorville, NY) -- A Suffolk County Health official is calling a deadly mosquito virus an "imminent threat" to public health. Health Commissioner James Tomarken says a Manorville mosquito sample has tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis, a virus that can cause fatal brain swelling in humans. He's asking New York State to confirm a declaration of an imminent threat so it can bolster mosquito control measures. Only about seven cases a year are reported in the U.S. and there's never been a human case in Suffolk County.
