Superintendent sends letters to families over the weekend
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) – The Seguin ISD is doing its part to make sure families understand how it hopes to respond should ICE execute a warrant at one of its campuses. Although it has been confirmed that no ICE agents have visited Seguin ISD campuses as of today, district officials say they felt it was important to offer clarity on protocols and procedures should a visit occur in the future.
Over the weekend, Seguin ISD Superintendent Veronica Vijil addressed Seguin ISD families of these protocols in a written statement.
The letter reads,
welcoming and inclusive learning environment for all students, staff, and community members. As a public school district in Texas, we are legally obligated to educate all students, regardless of their citizenship status, in a non-discriminatory manner.”
The letter also laid out relevant state and federal laws and local board policies – policies the district says outline clear procedures for interactions between campus personnel and law enforcement authorities.
“Recently, the Department of Homeland Security announced a reversal of a policy that restricted arrests by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in locations such as schools, hospitals, and places of worship. We understand that this announcement may have generated anxiety and uncertainty for some of our families.
Seguin ISD is dedicated to creating a
Dr. Vijil further stated that SISD will review and address all immigration-related requests from law enforcement on a case-bycase basis in compliance with applicable laws and collaboration with appropriate authorities.
She states, “this process includes communicating with parents or guardians. If ICE executes a warrant at one of our campuses, we will promptly alert parents to prevent misinformation.”

(Seguin) -- Two GRMC supervisors are being prestigiously recognized as citizen warriors within their departments.
Both Suzanne Fey, executive director of the business office, and Mark Porter, director of material management, were the recipients of the Patriot Award. The award was extended to them by the ESGR, Employer Support of the National Guard and Reserve.
ESGR, is the lead U.S. Defense Department program which promotes the cooperation and understanding between civilian employers and their National Guard and Reserve employees.
Nominating Porter for the honor was Carlos Zepeda, a Staff Sergeant with the Airforce Reserves.
Not only does he say his boss is a true professional, but Zepeda appreciates his support every time he steps away on assignment.
“It feels very good. I think it’s important to recognize the people that are doing good things and the people that help you do good things, and Mike Porter has done a lot to help me fulfill my role as a service member and perform my duties,” said Zepeda.
As for Porter, he says receiving recognition and the nomination came as a surprise.
“It was very unexpected. I didn’t realize there was a program like this to begin with, but Carlos is certainly a great employee and sets a good example for other staff and I’m glad to be able to support him,” said Porter.
Like Porter, Fey was also recognized for her ability to manage her department while folks like Paola Pacheco, a Specialist E4 with the US Army National Guard are away serving the country.
In fact, Pacheco, who was supposed to be on hand Thursday for the award recognition ceremony ended up missing it after being called out for an assignment at the border.
Those with the ESGR say it’s these types of instant and unexpected changes in the workforce that give rise to such incredible managers and superiors.
Although she was unable to be at the meeting, Pacheco was able to send a written statement. Sharing that statement with the Seguin Daily News was GRMC’s Elizabeth McCown.
“Paola says ‘please tell Suzanne, she deserves this award more than anyone for her kindness, respect and care that she brings to our patients. Please thank her for all her support that she continues to provide me. She’s an incredible boss and I respect her a lot. I miss her and I can’t wait to go back to work for her after I’m done with this mission,” read McCown.
Fey says although it’s been a while since Pacheco has been in the office, knowing that she remains a part of her team is the best gift.
“It’s a huge honor. I was very shocked but pleasantly surprised by it. I loved working with Paola. I miss her. She’s been deployed now for two years. So, I am ready any day she comes back but she’s really the one and all the people in our military are much more deserving than I am for everything they do for our country,” said Fey.
On hand to present the awards was Major James Cunningham, a volunteer with ESGR. Cunningham says these prestigious awards remain rare and credits entities like Guadalupe Regional Medical Center for being an employer who does its part to also help serve the country.

ICE, continued.
Meanwhile, the district is heavily advising families that they take a moment to double-check their contact information.
“If you need to update your email address, emergency contacts, or phone number, please log into your family portal or contact the campus registrar for assistance. SISD is committed to working with our families and staff members to maintain a safe environment for everyone in our schools,” stated Vijil.
Included in the letter sent out to all families was a host of available resources to help families navigate through these policy changes in immigration. The provided links and resources included:
A guide for schools by the National Education Association: https://www.nea.org/resource-library/ guidance-immigration-issues#safezone
Know your Rights: https://immigrationequality. org/legal/legal-help/resources/know-your-rights/ Legal Directory for Legal Help: https://www. immigrationadvocates.org/legaldirectory/

Schools have historically been off limits for immigration enforcement. This again all changed when,
ESGR, continued.
“It’s something that is a matter of pride both for the service member and hopefully their bosses as well as the whole organization. It just gives the general public, I think, a better knowledge of what their service

almost as soon as he took office, President Trump got rid of the decades-old policy that, again, prevented agents from arresting migrants without legal status in sensitive places such as schools, hospitals and churches. Such news has since raised fear among those families who currently have children enrolled in the local district.

Constitution and making the military better,” said Cunningham.
Receiving the same recognition just last year was former Guadalupe County Sheriff Arnold Zwicke and Guadalupe County Sgt. Trisha Thomas. Both were recognized before the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court.
Linda Rae (Lindsey) Morrison, age 82, went home to be with her Lord on February 3, after a wonderful weekend visit with family that was filled with laughter and love. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ray (married 48 years) and her brother, Jerry Lindsey.

Mike went on to Lamar College, before beginning his career in sales. Mike met his first wife Liz, and married in 1964. Mike was a devout Christian throughout his life, and spent most of that time serving the Episcopal Church. Mike dove headfirst into fellowship, participated in church committees, and even embarked on a mission trip to Honduras. Later in life, he continued his spiritual journey in the Baptist Church. His relationship with the Lord kept Mike strong through the toughest of times, and prepared him to face anything.
Mike was a devoted husband. Tragically widowed, more than once – he

She also leaves behind her church family and her beloved “Twisted Sisters” bible study group who always made sure she knew she was loved, by visiting when she could no longer attend church in person.

(Atlanta, GA) -- Maternal deaths are down in the U.S. with the exception of Black patients. That’s according to new CDC data. The report found that in 2023, 669 women died of maternal causes, compared to 817 who died in 2022. The maternal mortality rate across all races in the U.S. is now down to under 19 per 100-thousand live births, from over 22 in 2022. CDC officials said the rise in pregnancy-related deaths in Black patients wasn’t “statistically significant.” But data shows Black parents are still more likely to die from pregnancy-related issues.

Nearly 70 people in the U.S., mostly farm workers, have contracted bird flu as the virus spreads among poultry and dairy herds.
Lung Cancer Rising Among People Who Have Never Smoked (London) -- Lung cancer is being diagnosed in more people who have never smoked. A study published this week in the Lancet Respiratory Medicine journal looked at lung cancer cases from around the world from 2022 and found it was the fifth largest cause of cancer deaths among lifelong nonsmokers. The researchers said the biggest contributing factor for those cases was air pollution, which could account for up to 70-percent. As of 2019, most of the world population lived in areas with air quality levels below standards set by the World Health Organization.
