Seguin ISD teachers being awarded with pay for performance system

School district surprises 17 teachers with the news

(Seguin) -- Some of Seguin ISD’s top performing teachers are being financially rewarded for a job well done. Seguin ISD administrators along with board members and the Mighty Matador Band spent the day Monday surprising 17 teachers approved for the Texas’ Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA) program.

Teachers selected represent eight campuses: Jefferson Elementary, Koennecke Elementary,

Patlan Elementary, Rodriguez Elementary, Vogel Elementary, Weinert Elementary, Barnes Middle School, and Seguin High School.

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) recently notified the district of these teachers’ approval for the program, which provides them with a pathway to increase their yearly salary. Depending on their TIA designation of Recognized, Exemplary and Master – qualifying teachers each year will

receive anywhere from between $3,000 to $32,000 annually for the next five years.

The additional compensation for those selected comes directly from the state. State officials say the program could potentially see top tier teachers earning a six-figure salary.

The first teacher to be recognized in this inaugural batch of Seguin ISD teachers was Laura Jones.

Take a trip to Golden Pond

Texas

(Seguin) -- Live theatre returns to the stage this February at the Texas Theater. Curtains open this weekend for the production of “On Golden Pond.”

Show Director Pat Hoppe says most folks might remember the movie class starring Katharine Hepburn, Henry Fonda and Jane Fonda.

“The play is about an aging couple who spend their summers on a lake in Maine, on Golden Pond and the man is a retired professor and he’s going to have his 80th birthday and he is beginning to have Dementia which his wife realizes. That’s basically the story. They are there for the summer. They have a daughter. There’s an issue

between the father and the daughter. We are never told what it is. It’s an uncomfortable situation but that’s all resolved by the end of the play,” said Hoppe.

Hoppe says opening night, fortunately, has already sold out. She says it didn’t take long for folks to see the deal of having a dinner included with the Valentine’s Day performance.

Nonetheless, she says there’s plenty of time to catch the show this Saturday and Sunday and again next weekend, Feb. 21-23.

She says the talented and small cast make the effort worth it.“We have a really good cast. Greg Dew, who is our manager and director now

of the theater is playing the lead role of Norman. Peggy Schott is his wife. We also have Johanna Bain who is playing their daughter and her son, Jack Johnson is playing the son and then we have Mark Schellard who is playing the mailman and Chance Martin who plays the boyfriend who does become the husband. It’s a great chance to come out and see some really good local talent,” said Hoppe. Saturday and Sunday show times get underway at 7:30 p.m. while Sunday matinees begin at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are only available at the door or online at thetexas.org. The cost online is $20 or $25 at the door. The Texas Theatre is located at 425 N. Austin St.

Navarro ISD students achieve Top Honors at Regional Visual Arts Scholastic event

(Geronimo) -- Navarro ISD is thrilled to announce the outstanding achievements of its student artists at the recent Regional Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE). Passion met the canvas, and creativity soared on February 9 at Canyon Lake High School where nine talented Navarro High School art students showcased their artistic skills, with eight receiving the highest possible rating (4) and advancing to the Area round of judging. Two of those students have now qualified for the State VASE competition.

Art Teacher Belinda Lara expressed immense pride in her students' dedication and hard work. "These students have poured their hearts into their artwork, spending countless hours perfecting their craft. I am incredibly proud of their accomplishments," Lara stated. "To have eight students receive the highest rating and advance, and then to have two students qualify for State, is truly remarkable."

The students brought home a total of eleven medals, a testament to their talent and commitment. Mr. Ramon Parker, Director of Fine Arts, lauded the students' success. “This is a fantastic accomplishment for our students and our art program. Their dedication and talent are truly inspiring.”

Superintendent Mandy Epley shared her enthusiasm for the students’ achievements. “This is excellent news! So proud of them and thankful for the guidance they had to continue to work on their craft and put in the work to perfect the techniques and details needed to not only create something that moved people through their visual art expression but also earn top recognition!”

The district congratulates the following students on their accomplishments and wishes the two state-bound students the best of luck in the upcoming competition held on April 26 at San Marcos High School. These achievements underscore the strength and growing competitiveness of Navarro ISD's fine arts programs, which continue to shine and establish themselves as a force in the region. Navarro ISD remains committed to fostering creativity and artistic expression in its students, providing them with opportunities to excel.

Pay, continued.

Jones, a teacher at Koennecke Elementary, says not only does it reward her work, but it helps define the quality of teaching in the Seguin ISD.

“We as professional teachers are just proud to be recognized for our hard work and for our children’s hard work and it means a lot to us professionally and personally because we love our jobs. We love coming to school every day and I think Seguin ISD is a wonderful district to work for and it will bring recognition hopefully to our district. I hope it encourages other teachers or for prospective teachers to join the profession,” said Jones.

Also shocked and surprised by her own announcement down the hall was colleague Stephanie Kauitzsch. Kauitzsch today’s accolades is celebrated both personally and professionally.

“Professionally, this means that all the hard work and dedication that I have invested into becoming a better educator over the past 11 years in Seguin ISD, has been not only recognized, but also rewarded. It really is a reminder of why I love what I do, which is helping students grow in literacy and character. I strive to encourage students to become intrinsically motivated critical thinkers and problem solvers, which will ultimately lead them towards successful futures,” said Kauitzsch. “Personally, it is very rewarding to see my efforts through the years pay off in this way. My late mother was a Seguin ISD educator who always encouraged me to be a lifelong learner that continually strives to improve my instructional practices with the ever-evolving methodologies in education. I have no doubt that she is beaming with pride from Heaven with this personal accomplishment. Teaching has never been just a job for me; It has always been my calling and something I am incredibly passionate about. This recognition motivates me even more to continue learning, growing, and doing my best for my students every day.”

Kauitzsch says she appreciates that her work is being recognized and sees this as changing the culture both in the Seguin ISD and across the state.

“The Teacher Incentive Allotment is an excellent way to support and celebrate teachers who go above and beyond here in Seguin ISD and across the industry. It recognizes hard work and incentivizes high quality teachers to continue serving in our schools. It fosters a culture of growth and accountability, which encourages educators to keep improving their practices and making a bigger impact on their students. TIA makes teaching a more attractive career choice by offering better pay for top educators, which addresses the ongoing teacher shortage, and improves retention. When we support our teachers, we’re ultimately supporting our kids, and our whole community,” said Kauitzsch.

Teachers must meet rigorous standards under district criteria to qualify for a Recognized,

Exemplary, or Master designation. Teacher observation and performance data are reviewed by TEA and Texas Tech University for quality, validity, and reliability before final approval.

Seguin ISD Superintendent Dr. Vijil says teachers work tirelessly to provide all students with the best possible education and is thrilled to see that their efforts are being rewarded by TEA.”

“What this does, it validates what we already know. We have wonderful teachers here and the state of Texas has provided this incentive for teachers who can align their evaluation with the growth that they have for their kids for one year and they have shown immense growth and that’s what this means for them – that they are rewarded monetarily for a job well done,” said Vijil.

Dr. Vijil says they are dedicated to expanding this program across the district.

Plus, she says they are already working with teachers toward the goal of getting their designations next school year.

“Even today, it’s 17 of them and we just know that this is going to grow

and grow and grow and it’s what I’ve been telling the board members, just wait, if we get the first round validated, we are off and running. This is a wonderful, wonderful thing for Seguin, for teachers to know they are valued here and that we are doing everything that we can to make them eligible and work with them, so they too are rewarded,” said Vijil.

The Teacher Incentive Allotment was established by the Texas Legislature as part of House Bill 3 to provide funding for school districts to not only reward but help retain their top-performing teachers.

The amount allotted could increase if their data moves them to a higher tier with Master being the highest of the three.

It could also change for the following years should the teacher change schools. District officials say campus student socioeconomic data is a factor that goes into the designation. District officials also say that one of the main purposes of the TIA is to recruit and retain highly qualified teachers to work at the campuses with the highest needs.

Should a teacher leave the classroom, then, they will no longer be eligible for their amount.

Skoog

Carl “Herb” Herbert Skoog, Jr., respected community leader and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on February 3rd after a lengthy illness. Herb, as he was affectionately known to all, was born in Arlington Heights Illinois, on September 24, 1931 to Carl and Laura Skoog nee Chandler. Being the eldest of four children began Herb’s lifelong qualities of leadership, empathy and service to others culminating in his unwavering dedication and service to the New Braunfels community.

Raised in Illinois, Herb, along with a close friend, wanted to see the world by joining the US Navy together but as the line at the Navy recruiting station was too long for the ambitious yet impatient friends, they made their way next door and became Air Force enlistees; a move that would prove more life changing than he could have ever envisioned. To his good fortune, the Air Force kept Herb in San Antonio as an information specialist, instructor and recruiter. It was at this time he began working part-time as a DJ at radio station KONO and upon his discharge from the Air Force took on full time employment there as the stations program director and morning DJ where as “Herb Carl” was promoted as “San Antonio’s Morning Mayor”. It was at this time that Herb hosted “record hops” (dances) in Landa Park drawing fans from all over the area. It was during this time that Herb’s move to Texas truly paid off for it was then he met his future wife, Claudia Mittendorf whom he wed March 16, 1957. It was Claudia’s roots in Texas that anchored Herb to the community that adopted him as one of their own. Initially managing radio Station KGNB, he became managing partner of the organization as he led a group of local businessmen to acquire the station and growing it to add KNBT FM in New Braunfels as well as KBIC in Alice, Texas.

From his work in radio to his devoted family life, Herb’s influence reached far and wide. After taking on the management of KGNB, Herb continued to pour his heart into the New Braunfels community, becoming a trusted voice and beloved figure in the area. Over the years, Herb and Claudia raised their family, instilling the values of kindness, service, and community spirit in their children and grandchildren; his legacy includes not only many professional achievements but also his deep love for his family and his unwavering commitment to helping others. He was a dedicated member of several local organizations, always ready to lend a helping hand or offer sage advice. Whether through his work on the radio or his personal interactions, Herb touched the lives of many and will be remembered as a pillar of the New Braunfels community.

In 2006, Herb was named a New Braunfels Living Legend, a testament to his unwavering dedication and service. One contributing legacy to this award was the development of the radio program “Reflections”, an oral history of New Braunfels’ heritage as shared by local residents. Through Reflections, Herb ensured that the stories and experiences of the community would be preserved for future generations, further solidifying his legacy as a cherished and influential figure in New Braunfels. For more than 13 years Herb hosted this community favorite which is now forever archived in the oral history of our state at the archives of Texas Tech University.

Herb was one of the founding members of the Wurstfest Association. His involvement with Wurstfest is a testament to his dedication to celebrating and preserving local culture. He served in many roles, ultimately becoming President then honored with the titles of Grosse Opa and later Opa Emeritus, before taking on the role of Director of “Wurst Relations”, where he focused on advertising and promotion for the association for many years. His contributions to Wurstfest helped make it the beloved and vibrant event it is today.

Herb’s passion for adventure and community extended beyond his professional and civic achievements. Along with Claudia, he led the “NB Travelers,” a group of local travel enthusiasts who embarked on treks around the globe. Herb and Claudia’s enthusiasm and dedication made them exceptional hosts, and their warmth and camaraderie fostered lasting friendships among their fellow travelers. Over 30 excursions with the NB Travelers brought joy and unforgettable memories to many, who still fondly recall the great hosts and the cherished friendships formed during those journeys.
