(Seguin) – Have you secured those flowers yet? Today is Valentine’s Day for those who might need the reminder. Florists all over town are putting in that extra work so that no one goes unloved this holiday.
Jamie Lum, of Dietz Flower Shop, says customers will be taken care of whether they are looking for red roses for romance or lilies for mom. Valentine’s, pg. 3

(Seguin) – The Seguin ISD Board of Trustees this week approved the results of an evaluation for Superintendent Veronica Vijil but offered no details on how board members actually felt about her performance. That, however, was not the case for some residents who spoke to the board that night prior to trustees beginning their evaluation.
Among those was Krista Moreno, a local businessman woman and longtime supporter of the school district. Moreno, an avid volunteer who serves various district committees and who donates to local schools, called for a change in leadership.
“Seguin is growing quickly –one of the top 25 fastest growing cities in the U.S. right now. All eyes are on us from an economic development standpoint. We
cannot afford to have our flagship school district faltering under poor leadership. There are significant leadership challenges confronting our school district. We have seen excellent employees leave, residents choosing to move away or avoid enrolling their children in our schools and a growing sense of discontent among our staff. More
importantly, our children, the very heart of our mission are being underserved. For too long, things that demand immediate attention have become daily occurrences. The poor communication from our district has only compounded these issues, leaving us in a constant state of disarray. I want to emphasis that our commitment to Seguin and its future is unwavering. Long after the current administration has moved on, we will remain, and we must be ready to address these challenges head on. I urge you to consider making the difficult decision sooner rather than later. The longer we delay, the more our students and dedicated staff will continue to suffer. We owe it to our community to act decisively and restore the excellence, integrity and transparency that Seguin deserves,” said Moreno.

(New Braunfels) -- A highly contagious bird flu has been discovered in neighboring New Braunfels.
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department says that preliminary tests have confirmed Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in multiple black vultures found dead in Landa Park. Disease experts indicate HPAI is circulating among wild birds in Texas as waterbirds and waterfowl visit their wintering grounds. Widespread detections have occurred across Texas, with most recent findings in Amarillo, El Paso, Galveston, Harris, Lubbock, Potter, Travis and Wharton counties.
Detected in all states across the U.S., HPAI is a highly contagious zoonotic virus that transmits easily among wild and domestic birds. HPAI can also transmit to mammals including wild mammals and domestic cats. It can spread directly between animals and indirectly through environmental contamination. Texas Parks and Wildlife

Valentine’s continued.
“We do have plenty of selections available to still be chosen from. I would suggest that they come in as soon as possible or give us a call or to any of the local florists to get their order in so that they can be ccommodated and so that they can make sure their delivery gets there on time,” said Lum.
Lum says flower shops, however, are no longer just about flowers. She says folks are always surprised by the other gift ideas that are available.
“We have cute stuffies. There are plenty of selections to choose from. We had some chickens and roosters that were really hot this year, chocolates, ornaments – tons of gift items. You just really have to come in and look at the selection and choose from there but there is something for everyone,” said Lum.
Once upon a time, Valentine’s Day ran on the heels of Mother’s Day as the busiest holiday for florists. Today, Lum says success does not come without at least a year’s worth of planning.
“We start preparations in July the year before to get counts, flower needs, pictures – all of those things to make sure that the supplies that we need for this holiday are available and to ensure that we can get it in in a timely fashion and then just to ensure that everything is met

Megan Strickland, the president and co-founder of Safe in Seguin, a new local non-profit aimed at enhancing the progress and assisting the overall needs of the Seguin ISD, shared her support of Dr. Vijil. The tragic loss of three Seguin High School students this year, and alleged issues with bullying at all schools initially prompted the creation of the group. Since late fall, Strickland says the group has advocated for change – change that she feels is being heard and implemented under Dr. Vijil’s leadership.
“I want to take a moment to also thank Dr. Vijil and several of you. You know who you are for taking the time to meet with us, collaborate and listen to our ideas for our future. We

and everyone’s deliveries are made, we do bring in extra seasonal help to accommodate those needs. So, we go from being a 10-person crew to almost a 30-person crew when it is all said and done,” said Lum.
Despite the craze of the day, folks don’t have to worry about going home empty-handed here in Seguin. If it’s not a dozen roses your cupid is looking for, then customers can always find some other great gift ideas throughout Seguin.
Perhaps, it’s showing your love with the help of Kendra Scott or Consuela over at Gift & Gourmet, or maybe, it’s showing them how sweet they are by returning that sweetness to them with some goodies from Sweet Treats. Now for those wanting to spark some romance, don’t forget about stopping by Becker’s Feed & Fertilizer for one or two of those scented Circle E Candles. All others on the hunt for that perfect Valentine’s Day gift may also want to stop by the Guadalupe Trading Company where folks will find handcrafted high-quality and locally made treasures crafted by artisans from all over South Texas.
To ensure those gifts, many of the flower shops and other businesses today have also elected to stay open a bit later. They also encourage customers to call or check out their websites to ensure something specific.
also want to recognize Dr. Vijil for the progress that we’ve seen under her leadership and her continued efforts to engage with us. Your dedication is truly welcomed and appreciated. We have seen progress, and we remain hopeful for continued transparency, communication and a mindset that we can always improve somewhere. Safe in Seguin is here to support, encourage, uplift and recognize those who aim to make a difference in our schools and community,” said Strickland.
The school board, Tuesday night, unanimously adopted her evaluation, but did not extend her contract or grant her a pay raise. Dr. Vijil still has two years left on her current contract. According to Board President Denise Crettenden, the board can always come back at any time during the
The public can assist in interrupting HPAI transmission by limiting all unnecessary contact with wild birds, including the discontinuation of feeding and other activities that cause waterfowl to congregate in parks. In addition, taking down all bird feeders and bird baths is recommended, as these allow birds to congregate, increasing the chance of disease exposure if present.
People who choose to leave bird feeders and bird baths out are asked to clean them several times each week with a ten percent bleach solution and watch for signs of disease. Do not handle any sick or dead wildlife or allow

Dr. Vijil previously served as superintendent of schools in the Fabens ISD near El Paso. She was initially named Seguin ISD’s deputy superintendent while the district was under the leadership of former Superintendent Matthew Gutierrez. Shortly after she arrived, Dr. Vijil was named the interim superintendent when Dr. Gutierrez resigned to take another position in the Austin area.
The board later removed the interim tag and then formally hired Dr. Vijil as superintendent a year ago. She’s currently been the district’s top administrator for just shy of a year and a half.
any pets to consume any wild carcasses. Currently, the transmission risk of avian influenza from infected birds to people remains low, but the public should take basic protective measures if contact with wild animals cannot be avoided.
The public and health care professionals can find more information about HPAI in humans from the Texas Department of State Health Services. If an individual had contact with an HPAI-positive or suspect animal and develops signs of illness, immediately contact your health care provider and let them know about the exposure. If you encounter a wild animal with signs consistent with HPAI, contact your local TPWD wildlife biologist.

Carl “Herb” Herbert Skoog, Jr., respected community leader and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on February 3rd after a lengthy illness. Herb, as he was affectionately known to all, was born in Arlington Heights Illinois, on September 24, 1931 to Carl and Laura Skoog nee Chandler. Being the eldest of four children began Herb’s lifelong qualities of leadership, empathy and service to others culminating in his unwavering dedication and service to the New Braunfels community.
Raised in Illinois, Herb, along with a close friend, wanted to see the world by joining the US Navy together but as the line at the Navy recruiting station was too long for the ambitious yet impatient friends, they made their way next door and became Air Force enlistees; a move that would prove more life changing than he could have ever envisioned. To his good fortune, the Air Force kept Herb in San Antonio as an information specialist, instructor and recruiter. It was at this time he began working part-time as a DJ at radio station KONO and upon his discharge from the Air Force took on full time employment there as the stations program director and morning DJ where as “Herb Carl” was promoted as “San Antonio’s Morning Mayor”. It was at this time that Herb hosted “record hops” (dances) in Landa Park drawing fans from all over the area. It was during this time that Herb’s move to Texas truly paid off for it was then he met his future wife, Claudia Mittendorf whom he wed March 16, 1957. It was Claudia’s roots in Texas that anchored Herb to the community that adopted him as one of their own. Initially managing radio Station KGNB, he became managing partner of the organization as he led a group of local businessmen to acquire the station and growing it to add KNBT FM in New Braunfels as well as KBIC in Alice, Texas.
From his work in radio to his devoted family life, Herb’s influence reached far and wide. After taking on the management of KGNB, Herb continued to pour his heart into the New Braunfels community, becoming a trusted voice and beloved figure in the area. Over the years, Herb and Claudia raised their family, instilling the values of kindness, service, and community spirit in their children and grandchildren; his legacy includes not only many professional achievements but also his deep love for his family and his unwavering commitment to helping others. He was a dedicated member of several local organizations, always ready to lend a helping hand or offer sage advice. Whether through his work on the radio or his personal interactions, Herb touched the lives of many and will be remembered as a pillar of the New Braunfels community.
Herb’s past contributions to New Braunfels are almost too numerous to list but include
• New Braunfels Independent School District Board President
• Comal County Fair Association Director
• Chairman of the Braunfels / New Braunfels Partnership Committee
• Past Board Member and President of the New Braunfels Chamber
• Chairman of the New Braunfels Sesquicentennial Commission
• Recipient of the Chamber of Commerce Besserung (Community Betterment) Award, the Silver Unicorn Award, and the HeraldZeitung Unsung Hero award and he took great pride in being a supporter of the Eden Hill Community and in 2023 received the Leading Age Inspirational Senior Texan Award .
In 2006, Herb was named a New Braunfels Living Legend, a testament to his unwavering dedication and service. One contributing legacy to this award was the development of the radio program “Reflections”, an oral history of New Braunfels’ heritage as shared by local residents. Through Reflections, Herb ensured that the stories and experiences of the community would be preserved for future generations, further solidifying his legacy as a cherished and influential figure in New Braunfels. For more than 13 years Herb hosted this community favorite which is now forever archived in the oral history of our state at the archives of Texas Tech University.
Herb was one of the founding members of the Wurstfest Association. His involvement with Wurstfest is a testament to his dedication to celebrating and preserving local culture. He served in many roles, ultimately becoming President then honored with the titles of Grosse Opa and later Opa Emeritus, before taking on the role of Director of “Wurst Relations”, where he focused on advertising and promotion for the association for many years. His contributions to Wurstfest helped make it the beloved and vibrant event it is today.
Herb’s passion for adventure and community extended beyond his professional and civic achievements. Along with Claudia, he led the “NB Travelers,” a group of local travel enthusiasts who embarked on treks around the globe. Herb and Claudia’s enthusiasm and dedication made them exceptional hosts, and their warmth and camaraderie fostered lasting friendships among their fellow travelers. Over 30 excursions with the NB Travelers brought joy and unforgettable memories to many, who still fondly recall the great hosts and the cherished friendships formed during those journeys.

(Lubbock, TX) -- A measles outbreak in a tiny West Texas town is getting worse. There are now two-dozen cases near Lubbock, many involving unvaccinated children. Dr. Jason Bowling of the University of Texas Health System says there are likely to be more cases because measles is a highly transmissible pathogen. He blames the measles outbreak on declining vaccination rates in Gaines County which has one of the highest vaccination exemption rates in Texas. Nearly one-in-five kindergarteners have not received their shots and now health officials there have opened a drive-through clinic.
(Atlanta, GA) -- The CDC is reporting that preliminary data shows that flu deaths are outpacing COVID-19 deaths in 22 states for the first time since the start of the pandemic. That’s through the first five weeks of 2025 with one-point-seven-percent of all U.S. deaths attributed to influenza, with one-and-a-half-percent of all deaths attributed to COVID. The gap between flu and COVID deaths is widest in Washington, Oregon, California, Wyoming and Hawaii where there’s been a doubling of the numbers. The CDC also says that more than three times as many people are being hospitalized for influenza as compared to COVID.
(Los Angeles, CA) -- Ozempic, the popular diabetes and weight loss drug, reduces alcohol cravings and liquor consumption. That’s what the first clinical trial involving GLP-1 drugs is showing according to research published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry. The study, involving 48 people with moderate alcohol-use disorder, demonstrated that people on low doses of Ozempic for just nine weeks drank significantly less than those on a placebo. Researchers at the University of Southern California Institute for Addiction Science conducted the study and believe Ozempic and similar drugs, like Mounjaro, could be the future in treating many of the 30-million Americans with alcohol-use disorder.
(Atlanta, GA) -- The CDC is reporting there are now confirmed measles outbreaks in at least five states. They include New York, Texas, Georgia, Rhode Island and Alaska. The CDC says the cases are mainly among those who are unvaccinated. At least nine children in Texas alone have been hospitalized.
