Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
Parker became city manager in January 2020, after spending several years as an assistant city manager with the city of San Marcos. During his tenure, the city has experienced rapid residential, retail and industrial growth. He also was at the helm for the development of the city’s new master plan.

(Seguin) – You are never too young to learn how to fight crime. Approximately 200 high school students from across Texas are in Seguin this week for this year’s 29th Annual Texas Crime Stoppers Campus Conference. The youth conference which got underway on Monday runs through Wednesday at the Seguin Coliseum.
The Guadalupe County Crime Stoppers organization has been working for over two
years to host this year’s conference celebrating the incredible work of youth volunteers who dedicate themselves to keeping middle and high school campuses safe. Although the local crime prevention program has hosted a pair of adult conferences in the past, this is the first time that the conference will be focused on the safety of youth.

Crime, continued.
GCCS President David Reiley, says this week attendees have been learning about running effective Crime Stoppers programs, navigating state regulations, and exploring criminal justice trends. He says this week is all about tackling key topics that are keen among youth such as mental health, human trafficking, and online predators.
“We have students that come from across the state for this conference. Some school districts have their own Crime Stoppers organizations within their school districts that the student board of directors run, and they make their own rules, they come up with their bylaws and all the information and they run the meetings themselves. Some of them are part of a larger, county Crime Stoppers group. But a lot of them are independent groups. So, most of those chapters have representatives here this week and they’ve come down for the student conference and it gives them a chance to see what other Crime Stoppers organizations are doing as well as listen to the speakers that we have set up. They’ll attend breakout sessions which will cover everything from Fentanyl to trafficking to drugs so there’s a wide variety of topics,” said Reiley.
Currently, there are no youth Crime Stoppers programs in Guadalupe County. But Reiley says hopefully, after this week, that will change.
“We are actually using this as motivation for that. We have the Criminal Justice Department has brought us some students this week from Seguin High School and so we want to try to introduce this to them so that they may go back into their school and their campus and get with the junior highs and see if they can get enough support to start a chapter here in Seguin. We’ve been trying to do this for years but haven’t really gained a lot of momentum but that’s one of our goals with this conference,” said Reiley.
Although fighting crime is serious business, the process of learning to make communities and schools safe can also be fun.
Reiley says this year’s attendees were treated to ZDT's
Amusement Park last night, plus they are being invited to explore downtown Seguin, learning more about its history, public art displays and various food scenes.
Tonight is also destined to be an epic time with a live DJ and food trucks over at the Big Red Barn.
Reiley says programs across the state apply to be chosen as a conference host site. He says in this case, it was two years ago that Guadalupe County was chosen and the planning began.
“We work really close the Crime Stoppers Division out of the Governor’s Office in Austin and they are the ones that sponsor the event and provide all the technical support and staff that we use to put this on. So, they are kind of in charge of a lot of it and we do a lot of the background work, get the facilities and make sure everything is ready to go when we get here,” said Reiley.
GCCS Treasurer Kenna Schievelbein says hosting the conference in Seguin also provides the organization an opportunity to, again, share the importance behind the crime-fighting tool with the rest of the community.
“Our program is 100 percent anonymous. There is no background. We don’t know who is calling and we don’t want to know. So, we just want to encourage everyone that we have a lot of money just sitting in our bank account that has to be used for rewards. So, we want to give it back out to the community, so we just really want to reiterate and get it out there that if you see something or you know something to call in a tip because you are 100 percent anonymous. We don’t want to know who you are and we want to reward you for getting us information that hopefully will get a criminal arrested or charges filed against them,” said Schievelbein.
This year’s event will wrap up on Thursday with the presentation of the annual awards.
The Texas Best Awards celebrate exceptional Crime Stoppers organizations across the state, recognizing excellence in a variety of categories. These awards are divided into three segments: productivity and community impact, individual excellence, and media achievements.

(Washington, DC) -- The U.S. is experiencing an especially intense flu season. Hospitalization rates are even topping the levels at some points of the Covid-19 pandemic. Doctors are reportedly seeing many patients with some of the worst complications, including children coming to the hospital with neurologic complications. In adults, doctors have seen unexpected levels of pneumonia from a flesh-eating super bug bacteria calling MRSA.
(Cheyenne, WY) -- A third U.S. bird flu hospitalization has been confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. On Friday, health officials said a Wyoming woman was admitted to a healthcare facility in nearby Colorado. The patient was said to be experiencing “flu-like symptoms” and had underlying health conditions. The women was likely exposed to the bird flu virus through contact with an infected poultry flock at home. The Wyoming health department said the woman is a resident of Platte County and the Wyoming Livestock Board confirmed three backyard flocks have been infected by bird flu including in Platte County.
(Washington, DC) -- The Trump administration is slashing funding for the ObamaCare outreach program. Navigators for the Affordable Care Act help people sign up for coverage. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced they’re cutting staffing by 90-percent. The agency said it would allow them to focus on other strategies to reduce premiums for those who don’t qualify for ObamaCare.
(Washington, DC) -- At least one in five American women over the age of 50 have osteoporosis, but many don’t know it. Updated guidelines from the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force recommend women 65 and older to have a bone density scan to screen for the bone disease. Osteoporosis is often described as a “silent disease” because there are few, if any, symptoms until someone fractures a bone -- usually in the hip, wrist or spine. Women who have gone through menopause are at highest risk of bone loss, although it can also affect men.
