(Seguin) -- You can go ahead and add tax preparer to the list of accomplishments for a group of Seguin High School students. Tonight, students will continue offering free tax preparation services to eligible taxpayers.
Approximately 15 students enrolled in the business pathway of the district’s Career and Technical Education program are now officially certified to provide services through the Internal Revenue Service’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
Sergio Jaurrieta, Seguin ISD’s director of career and technical education, says these students have completed the IRS-required training on tax law and available tax credits and are now lending their knowledge and services to the community.
“We have approximately 15 to 18 students that have received their certification. The teachers are working with some 45 to 50 students to go ahead and finish up their certification in the coming weeks. So, these certifications are specific to one of the classes
that the teacher is teaching. The certification is tied to what we call the TEA requirements of a Business Approved and Industry Certification. Once the students are finished with the training and are finished with their modules, they are ready to go ahead and do their tax preparation,” said Jaurrieta.
The CTE director says this is the first time a tax certification course has been offered to Seguin High School students.
“The students that are in the business program, the students actually go through training via Tax VITA and they actually do two returns and the returns help the students understand all of the requirements before they receive their certification. Those students actually walk with three certificates from the IRS where they understand the requirements or what it takes to be that tax preparer,” said Jaurrieta.
Jaurrieta says the district is thrilled over the success of the Seguin ISD’s Tax VITA program plus the career readiness it provides. Tax, pg. 3
(Seguin) – The grand opening of the nation’s first dualbrand Applebee’s|IHOP restaurant is officially being reported as a success. The long-awaited establishment opened its door to customers on Tuesday morning.
Patrons are said to have enjoyed selecting entrees from either one or both restaurant menus all day. Whether it was omelets and fries or a burger and pancakes, folks took advantage of the various menu items that are now being served all-day from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m.
Even those with small stomachs couldn’t wait to push through the doors with their big appetites.
At least that was the case for Tesia Lowe and her small daughter Makenna. Lowe says operating the two restaurants as one is no doubt a dream come true – a dream that Makenna couldn’t wait to experience.
“She’s ready for it. She’s been waiting. As soon as she saw these signs come up, she was ready for it. She has bugged every single time and as soon as there were cars working on it, she’s like ‘they are open already, let’s go’ and I’m like, they are not. They are construction workers like daddy. They are working (on it),” said Lowe.
Now while the food is Makenna’s favorite, it is the convenience of this new establishment in Seguin that makes Lowe one happy momma.
“We usually go to New Braunfels because she goes to dance. So, on Fridays, we will go back and forth between IHOP and Applebee’s but now, we have one here,” said Lowe.
Tuesday’s grand opening included influencers who came out and in some cases flew out to try this first-of-its-kind restaurant. Local leaders along with the Seguin High School Marching Band were also all part of the morning celebration.
KWED General Manager Darren Dunn and Sports Director Chris Austin speak to Applebee's|IHOP Franchise Owner Danny Hakim during Tuesday's live radio remote outside the newly converted restaurant. Hakim, who already owned the original IHOP restaurant, shared how excited he was to select Seguin for this first ever dual brand establishment. Hakim and his family who live in San Antonio own and operate most if not all IHOPs and Applebee's in the San Antonio area.
Seguin Radio KWED was also on hand marking the occasion with listeners giving them the details of this new dining experience during a live broadcast remote.
The fully converted restaurant sits at the original IHOP location at 2777 State Highway 123 Bypass.

(Seguin) -- Imagine discovering that one of your parents is a god— you’re sixteen years old, by the way.
And your dad, as it turns out, is Poseidon, God of sea and storm, bearer of the great trident forged by the Cyclopes. So that makes you half god, with powers you never knew you had. Sounds pretty amazing—but remember, with great power comes great responsibility. Not to mention one heck of an adventure. Set that adventure to music and you’ve got The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical.
Adapted from the beloved bestselling novel by Rick Riordan, written by Joe Tracz with music and lyrics by Rob Rokicki, The Lightning Thief blends mythology with a modern-day hero’s quest.
The cast features Terry Barnes as Grover, Aliyah Harris as Percy, Ella Mae McCarthy as Annabeth, and Ethan Soltero as Luke.
“The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical has become

an audience favorite, captivating those who love the book series while creating a new generation of fans along the way,” says Professor David Legore, chair of the Department of Dramatic Media at TLU. “The piece has a great poprock score, featuring memorable melodies, all while supporting a story that resonates with young and adult audiences alike.”
Legore says the musical does a good job of staying faithful to Riordan’s clever blending of Greek mythology and modern characters
“VITA stands for Volunteer Income Tax Assistant. It’s a grant program from the IRS and it’s a free tax preparation service. What is great about this is they use the programs that the IRS uses so the students are learning what it means to be a professional after high school. We call it Career Ready. The students can go ahead and work for H&R Block as a tax preparer. We try to promote them being in entrepreneurships,” said Jaurrieta.
The free program continues weekly through March. The certified students will be available to help eligible taxpayers at the Seguin High School Library on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m.
Assistance with basic tax preparation and electronic filing is available for individuals and families who generally make $67,000 or less annually; those with disabilities and those limited English-speaking taxpayers.
Jaurrieta says the course is more than just about basic tax preparation and electronic filing. He says it’s also about customer service.
“One of the things that the students learn in their modules is customer service. One of the certifications is being a greeter and they actually understand what it means
and contexts. “In addition, it includes some surprisingly powerful themes about the relationships between young people and their parents,” he adds. “Most of all, however, it’s a lot of fun! To maximize that fun, we are producing the show in the round, bringing the audience up close to the action. It will be an unique and exciting approach to this high-energy hit!”
Performance dates and times are February 21, 22 and 28, and March 1 at 7:30 p.m., and February 23 and 28 at 2:30 p.m. Performances will be in the Studio Theatre in the Weston Center for the Performing Arts on the TLU campus. Tickets, which are $12 for adults, $5 for students and seniors, and free to TLU students with a valid ID card, can be purchased at the door or reserved in advance: TLU Dramatic Media - Texas Lutheran University event tickets from TicketSource. Special thanks to production sponsors Ann (Glenewinkel) Hartmann and Byrone.
to be able to greet someone as a customer – welcoming them into their office, tell them about the process, tell them about the legal requirements that the IRS requires so they really are trained first of all in customer service before they start the income tax preparation,” said Jaurrieta. Tax, pg. 4
Tax, continued.
To complete taxes promptly, those seeking assistance are asked to bring the following items with them each Tuesday and Thursday afternoon.
Those items include original photo identification, such as driver’s license, school, employer, military, or state ID for you and your spouse (if married)
- Social Security cards or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number documents
- Birth dates for you, spouse, and dependents
- A copy of last year’s tax return
- All Forms W-2 and 1099
- Form 1095-A, if applicable
- Information for other income, deductions, and credits
AND the total paid to daycare providers and their tax ID number
Emily Allen, Seguin ISD director of communications, says although they are confident in the students’ tax preparation skills, the tax clinic is designed to ensure accuracy.
“The students’ teacher is certified to complete tax returns as well, so she is going to help with reviews and there is a second certified tax preparer also who is ensuring accuracy, so we want to make sure that the public has peace of mind if they decide to use our student services. Again, this is a free program, and we think it’s a really great opportunity for our students to develop some very valuable life skills while also providing a wonderful service to our community,” said Allen.
For direct deposit of a refund, proof of account and bank’s routing number
should also be provided. Both spouses will also need to be present for those married and filing jointly.
Again, tax preparation is just one of the newly added programs for the CTE program.
(Seguin) -- The Seguin Matadors opened the new Matador Legends Ballpark on Monday, falling to the 3rd-ranked team in Class 6A.
The San Antonio Johnson Jaguars, led by the state’s top prospect and Texas Tech commit Kayson Cunningham, took the first ever game at the new Seguin baseball field 10-0. The game was played in front of several Major League Baseball scouts.
Johnson scored eight runs in the first two innings and held the Matador lineup to two hits. Matthew Marek had one of those hits and came on in relief in the third inning, holding the Jaguars to just two runs in three innings pitched.
Seguin head coach Mike Gonzales said Johnson, a team that made it to the state championship last season, provided a good learning experience for his team at the new ballpark.
“It’s a great experience, a home opener, brand new ballpark. Not the way we wanted to start but that’s a good ball club over there,” Gonzales said. “They’re fresh out of going to the very end, the state championship game. They fell a little short, but if you want to make historic runs you gotta play teams like that to get your feet wet.”
Johnson’s senior shortstop Cunningham was robbed of a hit by Matador right fielder Elliot Weaver in the 5th inning. Weaver tracked down a screamer off the bat of Cunningham for the final out of the inning to end a Jaguar threat.
The Mats will next host the Seguin baseball tournament starting on Thursday morning. If you plan on going, bundle up because temperatures are expected to be in the 20s early on Thursday warming up only into the 30s later in the day.
(Marion) -- Over in Marion on Monday, Marion Bulldog pitcher Huck
Schoenvogel tossed a no-hitter on opening day as the Bulldogs took down Natalia 10-0.
The District 26-3A MVP last season, Schoenvogel struck out 12 in a dominant performance. Schoenvogel matched his older brother, Owen, who threw a no-no two years ago for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs will next host the Marion baseball tournament starting on Thursday.
(Jourdanton) -- And the Navarro Panthers opened their season on the road with a 5-0 shutout at Jourdanton on Monday.
The Panthers will return to Jourdanton for the Jourdanton tournament starting on Thursday.
(Atlanta, GA) -- Hundreds of CDC “disease detectors” are fired in another DOGE downsizing move. They got their walking papers by email Saturday night. Those emails cited “poor performance,” even though most of the CDC researchers who were purged had excellent performance records. DOGE had told the CDC it planned to eliminate ten-percent of its staff and that more terminations are coming up. The CDC is responsible for protecting our nation against dangerous disease threats and responding quickly when they do arise.
(Gaines County, TX) -- A measles outbreak in West Texas has infected about four dozen people in Gaines County and health officials fear the true number of cases may be as high as two to three-hundred. Many of those who’ve contracted measles are unvaccinated children from a rural Mennonite community. Most people with measles, which causes a rash and a high fever, recover within a few weeks. But the highly contagious disease can lead to pneumonia, brain inflammation, eye infections or even death.
(Washington, DC) -- A bird flu vaccine for chickens now has the green light. The Department of Agriculture gave conditional approval Friday to Zoetis [[ zo-EH-tis ]], a company which started updating its vaccine in 2022. Millions of chickens have been killed to stop the spread, causing a massive spike in egg prices.
(New York, NY) -- Two patients seeking treatment at an East Harlem urgent care triggered a health scare over the weekend. The incident happened Sunday at a CityMD center. Reports from the center initially were that the two were seeking treatment after having been exposed to the Ebola virus through contact with someone from Uganda who was sick. The two were rushed to to a hospitall by EMS workers wearing Hazmat suits, where it was later determined that neither patient had or was exposed to Ebola.
