The first round of ensembles was performed last night. Some of those schools and districts that performed included Port Isabel, El Paso, Fort Worth and Uvalde.

Today’s batch of schools

Curtains open for final run of ‘On Golden Pond’

(Seguin) – The final weekend has arrived for the live Texas Theatre production of ‘On Golden Pond’ by Ernest Thompson.

The show opened up last week on Valentine’s Day and continues this weekend, Feb. 21-23.

Director Pat Hoppe says the script made famous by the movie remains an all-time favorite for audiences.

“It should be familiar. ‘On Golden Pond’ was a movie in 1981 and the actors Henry Fonda and Katharine Hepburn both won Best Actor and Best Actress for that. Jane Fonda was also in it. So, most people know the play from the movie, but the play has been around even before that. It was in 1979,” said Hoppe.

Hoppe says every time they host a play, she is encouraged by those who experience the Texas Theatre for the very first time. She says not only do they walk away with great live entertainment, but they also leave, taking home a memorable experience at one of Seguin’s most historic buildings.

“When people walk into our theatre, they are amazed at how lovely it is. It really is a beautiful setting, and I think it would just expand their life if they would take advantage and come to the theatre and see a good play in a loving setting. We have a lot of new things that we have not done in the past,” said Hoppe.

Hoppe says securing seats at the theatre has also become more convenient, giving folks the opportunity to find the

right show for them.

“All of our tickets are now sold on our website. It’s thetexas. org Click on buy tickets. It’s very easy. It’s a very friendly site for buying tickets, especially for us older people who are not good at that sort of thing. We now have reserved seats so when you log on, you can see where the seats are available, and you can click on those seats. So, that’s another real good thing that we are doing. You can also just walk up and buy tickets,” said Hoppe.

Ticket prices are $20 online or $25 at the door. Friday and Saturday show times get underway at 7:30 p.m. A Sunday matinee is also scheduled for 2:30 p.m. The Texas Theatre is located at 425 N. Austin St.

City officials explain more behind water quality letter

(Seguin) -- Despite a letter you might have received recently, the drinking water in Seguin is safe.

City officials say you don't need to be worried about a water quality letter that recently went out to city of Seguin water customers.

The letter states the city exceeded the maximum contaminant levels of total trihalomethanes found in their drinking water. Despite the spike, the problem has already been corrected and the city's water supply is now in compliance.

Although those new numbers have not yet officially been reported by the Texas Commission on Environment

Quality (TCEQ) via its quarterly reports, Utilities Director Tim Howe says local testing has confirmed that they are meeting the state mandated standards. Howe says the letters being received this week simply allow the city to remain transparent about the quality of its water.

“The message I would like to emphasis is that the water is safe to drink, and our customers do not need to use an alternative water supply. That’s the biggest message. However, I understand that as a customer when you receive a notice like this that perhaps, it might be confusing to some so it can cause concerns,” said

Howe. To alleviate all other concerns, Howe further explains the process that led the city to these results.

“In this particular case, the state collects the samples for what is called disinfection biproducts and in this case it’s total trihalomethanes. These pollutants are formed when the city adds chlorine to its drinking water for disinfection and we do that. It’s a requirement by state law to maintain a certain chlorine residual. But this particular source water is out of the Guadalupe River. It’s our surface water and it contains naturally occurring Water, pg. 3

Community invited to Black Leadership Conference

TLU’s Black Student Union to host free event

(Seguin) – The Seguin community, especially area youth are invited to the TLU campus this weekend to help wrap up its celebration of Black History Month.

TLU’s Black Student Union (BSU) will be hosting its annual Black Leadership Conference on Saturday from 3 to 7 p.m. in the university’s Tschoepe Hall.

Among the community leaders lending a hand is Pastor Lee Martin. Martin, who started working with the BSU as part of his church duties, says he is pleased that a new partnership has evolved through the planning of the conference – a conference that he says helps to better showcase the students’ efforts.

“In talking with the BSU, this is how we kind of got our foot in the door, but they were do their planning for a Black History Month program that they do each

organic matter and when it reacts with chlorine, it can form what is known as a disinfect biproduct. The maximum containment level for total trihalomethanes is 0.080 milligrams per liter and it is based on a locational running annual average,” said Howe.

Howe says the water testing area that reported the "exceeded contaminants levels" only services a minimal amount of residential and commercial customers. He says although it was not across the city, officials felt it was important to notify all users. Those with questions on the quality of their drinking water in the city of Seguin are encouraged to contact Ricardo Jimenez at 830386-2218.

year there at the college and we just brainstormed ideas and thought of doing a leadership conference so this will be our third annual leadership conference there,” said Martin.

This year’s leadership conference features an all-female panel. Martin says this decision was based on the BSU’s efforts all month long to feature those females who played major roles in the civil rights movement.

Each of the panelists, however,

has a story to share about their journeys to success. Martin says he encourages not only college students but also middle and high schoolers to come out for the night of engagement and empowerment.

“There is a different theme each year. The theme this year is 'Rooted in Resilience' and the thought behind it was to have speakers –to engage and empower the youth there at TLU and specifically the black youth because it is such a small percentage of African American students there. We just wanted to have speakers that were closer to their age, not every speaker but the majority -- that have already achieved some success and for them to come and basically tell their story,” said Martin.

This year’s panel consists of Dr. Kaylan Thompson; Samayia Sneed; Alicia Jones; Rheisha Shol; Nikki Elaine Bittings and Ashley Harris.

Quiroz

Natalia Gonzales Quiroz, aged 94, of Stockdale, Texas, passed away Saturday afternoon, February 15, 2025 of natural causes at home.

Natalia was born October 5, 1930 to Adolfo and Maria Gonzales in Marfa,Texas. Her husband, Raul R. Quiroz Sr., and her eldest daughter, Estelita Quiroz Davila precede her.

Natalia is survived by her three daughters and son: Linda Quiroz Nunez and her husband, Ray; Mary Lou Quiroz; Patricia Quiroz Severino and her husband, Michael; her son, Raul R. Quiroz Jr. and his wife, Karen. She is also survived by her son-in-law, Gilbert Davila. Natalia has seven grandchildren: Aramis Nunez Miller, Gilbert Christopher Davila and his wife, Celina, Gabriel Davila, Raul R. Quiroz III, Petra Natali Quiroz, and Sarit Quiroz. Her grandson, Travis Nunez, precedes her in death. Her great-grandchildren are Madeline Gonzalez Pirnak and her husband, Nick; Elia Miller, Lillian Miller, and Camila Davila. Natalia’s brother, Ishmael Gonzales and his wife Mary, also survive her, as well as, many other extended family members and numerous friends.

Natalia and Raul were married after his service in WW II in both the U.S Army and Navy. They were married for 65 years and raised their family in Odessa, Texas. They had five children, but many friends & family considered them to be “mom and dad.”

Natalia was a full-time homemaker and mother. She epitomized the “Proverbs 31” woman. Together, Raul and Natalia opened their home to family and friends. Anyone could visit any day or time. Their home was warm, welcoming, filled with love and laughter. Natalia was the heart of the home. Their homestead was named “The Acres” where many Sunday barbecues and holidays were celebrated. They served “farm to table” to everyone. They raised vegetable gardens, fruit orchards, and livestock for the family and anyone in need. Natalia made every meal from scratch including bread. She was known

for her famous “pan de orno.” In addition to teaming with Raul to run the gardens, she was artistic too. She found time in the evening, or early morning to sew outfits for her children, quilts for the home, and beautiful embroidered dolls.

Natalia raised her children to honor their parents, love each other, and work as a team. Most importantly, she raised them to love God and how to pray. Natalia’s gift of faith was the greatest inheritance she gave to her children. She was a no-nonsense mother who raised five strong willed children. At the same time, her sense of humor brought so much joy to the family. By the time her children started school, they knew basic school curriculum. The children were also encouraged to develop some form of artistic talent. The fruits of her labor produced educators, community leaders, entrepreneurs and award winning artists.

Natalia and Raul had a beautiful love story. They shared the same faith, goals, passion and love for life. The legacy of their marriage is still an encouragement to family and friends. “’Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’” Matt. 25:21

Most importantly, they were born again believers in Christ Jesus, and now follow in His footsteps through the “Narrow Gate” to continue their ministry in eternal life. (Matt. 7:13)

A private family viewing will be Sunday, February 23, 2025 at 3pm. Friends may join them from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Goetz Funeral Home, 713 N. Austin Street, Seguin, Texas 78155. The funeral service will be Monday, February 24, 2025 at 12pm. noon, also at Goetz Funeral Home. Natalia will be placed in her final resting place at Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park, 2951 S. State Hwy. 46, New Braunfels, Texas.

The pallbearers are Raul R. Quiroz Jr., Gilbert Davila, Gilbert Christopher Davila, Gabriel Davila, JP Gonzales, and Ray Garcia. Michael Severino will serve as music minister. Rev. Ralph Govea will serve as officiant.
