Elizabeth Smart coming to TLU

Abduction survivor to share story of resilience, hope

(Seguin) -- The victim of one of the most famous child abduction cases of our time comes to TLU this week to share her personal story of despair, hope, triumph and empowerment.

Tracy Donley, TLU communications director, says residents are invited to mark Thursday, Feb. 27 on their calendars for a special evening presentation with Elizabeth Smart who was abducted as a teen in Salt Lake City.

Despite her unthinkable abuse, Donley says Smart is now able to share her story of despair.

“Back in 2002, she was 14 years old and she was abducted

from her home right out of her bed at knifepoint and the captors threatened to kill her family if she tried to escape so she basically for 9 months was missing but her family never gave up.

Teens taken into custody after allegedly stealing guns from vehicles

(Guadalupe County)

-- A pair of teen boys were arrested after allegedly stealing firearms from vehicles in northern Guadalupe County.

The Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office says on Saturday deputies responded to the 100 block of Laurel Grace Ln. for a report of two male subjects dressed in dark clothing looking inside vehicles.

Upon arriving, a 15-year-old and 17-yearold were taken into

custody. Assisting the sheriff’s office was the New Braunfels Police Department.

Officials say both teens were armed with firearms taken from vehicles they had burglarized. Investigators later determined multiple vehicles had been broken into.

Residents are encouraged to keep vehicles locked at all times. They also ask that they remove all valuables and firearms from vehicles.

They kept searching for her and finally, in March of 2003, they found her and she was rescued. What is so inspiring about her story is that she has turned that tragedy around and is now advocating for other victims and empowering other people and not just victims of abduction but people who faced adversity in general in life which is everyone,” said Donley.

Smart went on to establish the Elizabeth Smart Foundation, which exists to drive social change in the fight against sexual violence. Smart also helped promote the National AMBER Alert program, the Adam Walsh Child Protection & Safety Act, and other safety legislation to help prevent abductions.

She authored the bestselling book, My Story, in which she chronicles her experiences, as well as You’re Not Alone: The Journey from Abduction to Empowerment, a collaboration with other abduction survivors.

Most recently, Smart released Where There’s Hope, a powerful and inspiring book about what it takes to overcome trauma and to find strength to move forward and reclaim one’s life.

Elizabeth Smart’s free presentation to the community is made possible thanks to the Jessie S. and Jack Harold Upton Brown Cultural Enrichment Endowment Fund. The event gets underway on Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. in TLU’s Jackson Auditorium.

Following Smart’s presentation, there will be a meet and greet plus book signing.

Smart, continued.

“That event raises the most funds that we have to give back to our grant program. It’s part of our initiatives, mission and goals to give back to Seguin ISD and the way to do that is through our grant program. So, by raising funds through our Mardi Gras event, that helps us to be very successful,” said Nash.

Bryan Spahn, one of the event co-chairs, says one of the highlights of the fundraiser is the Golden Ticket trip raffle. He says one lucky person this year will again get to choose from four incredible destinations.

“For our Golden Ticket this year, we’ve got a trip to Cabo, Tuscany, Sedona and then a Kentucky Bourbon trip which that one is a pretty amazing trip. I think these trips are probably going to do phenomenal so we are excited for everyone to be able to buy this ticket. You can go online. You can buy a ticket ahead of time. You don’t have to be there to win. So, you can buy as many tickets as you want,” said Spahn.

Sharing the rest of the festivities for the annual fundraiser is Steve Parker. Parker like Spahn has chaired the event for the past several years. He says this year, the group decided to change things up a bit. And although they won’t have that Cajun-style menu, he says he believes they have added something better.

“Well, this year, I think we want to tell everybody it is a great value too because for $50, it’s actually a meal (from our caterer) Burnt Bean – James Beard nominee restaurant right here in Seguin – Michelin award winning restaurant and so if you have never had a chance, it’s a great opportunity to come out and try Burnt Bean on us and be a part of the event. We will have some music there as well so it will be a great time and then the games are always fun because people have the chance to win these things. I mean this trip, the Golden Ticket, -- there’s only 100 chances. We sell 100 tickets for a $100 (each) and so there’s a

great chance to win but we will also have other raffle prizes as well. We are going to auction off a purse as part of one of our games as well as a $700 gift card to Academy. So, lots of opportunities to win. We will have a booze wagon that will be up for a game as well. Everybody enjoys those and so, it will be a lot of fun,” said Parker.

In addition to food, live music and a chance to win a trip, Spahn says this year’s fundraiser provides folks with all sorts of ways to take home a top prize.

“We’ve got some great games this year as well as live and silent auction items. In addition to that, we will also have an added baking table that is going to have baked goods to be auctioned off by some of our local people who have made those and so, we are really hoping to break some records this year and really see more than we’ve done in the year’s past and I think we’ve had a really great start to that too,” said Spahn.

Those unable to make it this Thursday but who would still like to support the Seguin Education Foundation are encouraged to log online and bid on the many silent auction items up for grabs.

The link to the Mardi Gras 25 Silent Auction is now live and can be accessed via the SEF Facebook page. Items include a signed Taylor Swift guitar, Consuela bags, plus other premium items.

Folks also have the chance to be the winner of a Louis Vuitton giveaway valued at $1,500. Tickets are $75 for one in 50 chances to win the Felicie Pochette. A link for tickets can also be found on the SEF social media pages.

Thursday night fundraiser tickets are $50 each or $40 for Seguin ISD employees. Those wishing to sponsor the event or donate an auction item are encouraged to call the SEF office at 830-379-0325.

Tickets can be purchased on SEF social media pages or by visiting the group’s website at seguineducationfoundation.org .

Quiroz

Natalia Gonzales Quiroz, aged 94, of Stockdale, Texas, passed away Saturday afternoon, February 15, 2025 of natural causes at home.

Natalia was born October 5, 1930 to Adolfo and Maria Gonzales in Marfa,Texas. Her husband, Raul R. Quiroz Sr., and her eldest daughter, Estelita Quiroz Davila precede her.

Natalia is survived by her three daughters and son: Linda Quiroz Nunez and her husband, Ray; Mary Lou Quiroz; Patricia Quiroz Severino and her husband, Michael; her son, Raul R. Quiroz Jr. and his wife, Karen. She is also survived by her son-in-law, Gilbert Davila. Natalia has seven grandchildren: Aramis Nunez Miller, Gilbert Christopher Davila and his wife, Celina, Gabriel Davila, Raul R. Quiroz III, Petra Natali Quiroz, and Sarit Quiroz. Her grandson, Travis Nunez, precedes her in death. Her great-grandchildren are Madeline Gonzalez Pirnak and her husband, Nick; Elia Miller, Lillian Miller, and Camila Davila. Natalia’s brother, Ishmael Gonzales and his wife Mary, also survive her, as well as, many other extended family members and numerous friends.

Natalia and Raul were married after his service in WW II in both the U.S Army and Navy. They were married for 65 years and raised their family in Odessa, Texas. They had five children, but many friends & family considered them to be “mom and dad.”

Natalia was a full-time homemaker and mother. She epitomized the “Proverbs 31” woman. Together, Raul and Natalia opened their home to family and friends. Anyone could visit any day or time. Their home was warm, welcoming, filled with love and laughter. Natalia was the heart of the home. Their homestead was named “The Acres” where many Sunday barbecues and holidays were celebrated. They served “farm to table” to everyone. They raised vegetable gardens, fruit orchards, and livestock for the family and anyone in need. Natalia made every meal from scratch including bread. She was known

for her famous “pan de orno.” In addition to teaming with Raul to run the gardens, she was artistic too. She found time in the evening, or early morning to sew outfits for her children, quilts for the home, and beautiful embroidered dolls.

Natalia raised her children to honor their parents, love each other, and work as a team. Most importantly, she raised them to love God and how to pray. Natalia’s gift of faith was the greatest inheritance she gave to her children. She was a no-nonsense mother who raised five strong willed children. At the same time, her sense of humor brought so much joy to the family. By the time her children started school, they knew basic school curriculum. The children were also encouraged to develop some form of artistic talent. The fruits of her labor produced educators, community leaders, entrepreneurs and award winning artists.

Natalia and Raul had a beautiful love story. They shared the same faith, goals, passion and love for life. The legacy of their marriage is still an encouragement to family and friends. “’Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’” Matt. 25:21

Most importantly, they were born again believers in Christ Jesus, and now follow in His footsteps through the “Narrow Gate” to continue their ministry in eternal life. (Matt. 7:13)

A private family viewing will be Sunday, February 23, 2025 at 3pm. Friends may join them from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Goetz Funeral Home, 713 N. Austin Street, Seguin, Texas 78155. The funeral service will be Monday, February 24, 2025 at 12pm. noon, also at Goetz Funeral Home. Natalia will be placed in her final resting place at Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park, 2951 S. State Hwy. 46, New Braunfels, Texas.

The pallbearers are Raul R. Quiroz Jr., Gilbert Davila, Gilbert Christopher Davila, Gabriel Davila, JP Gonzales, and Ray Garcia. Michael Severino will serve as music minister. Rev. Ralph Govea will serve as officiant.

Please visit Natalia’s online guest book at www.goetzfuneral.com to leave a memory, or condolence for her family. Funeral arrangements are under the directions of Goetz Funeral Home, 713 N. Austin Street, Seguin, TX 78155

The Vatican added that Pope Francis continues to be “vigilant and well oriented.” Francis took part in the Holy Mass from the apartment on the 10th floor of Gemelli Hospital Sunday morning. Staten Island Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis says she and other New York lawmakers got word from the White House that there will be no cuts to staffing at the World Trade Center Healthcare Program and research grants related to 9/11 illnesses. The plan was originally to cut 20 percent of staff as part of The Trump Administration’s efforts to cut government waste. That caused backlash from New York first responders and lawmakers in New York and on Capitol Hill. The program provides medical treatment for 137-thousand first responders and survivors of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

(Atlanta, GA) -- Drug overdose deaths are down for the first time since the pandemic began. New CDC data shows that the rate of overdose deaths fell four-percent from 2022 to 2023.
