Squirrel repair in motion

(Seguin) -- Rest assured that the three squirrels damaged over the last several months along the city’s Squirrel Trail Program are on their way back as soon as possible.

However, when time and money are involved, things often take time. That’s according to Kyle Kramm, Seguin Main Street Program director.

“They are taking a little longer to get repaired than what they thought it was going to take. But they are still in progress of getting repaired,” said Kramm.

The first fiberglass squirrel to be damaged was Happy over at Park West. Happy’s tail reportedly broke off in September and has since been undergoing restoration.

The two most recent squirrels to be broken and destroyed were Sudy over at the Texas Women’s Federated Building located at 432 N. River St and the Wendy Parker Squirrel located outside of Seguin City Hall at 205 N. River St.

Officials say, in these two cases, both squirrels were reportedly

purposely targeted by vandals.

Despite the heartbreak of having to piece these art pieces back together, Kramm says the city, luckily, allowed for a contingency

budget for these types of situations.

“The repair of the squirrels is being overseen by the Seguin Commission on the Arts.

Tax filing now underway

(Washington) – Tis the season for taxes. The Internal Revenue Service has officially opened the 2025 tax filing season and is accepting and processing federal individual tax year 2024 returns.

IRS systems have already received millions of tax returns from across the nation for processing.

The IRS expects more than 140 million individual tax returns for tax year 2024 to be filed ahead of the Tuesday, April 15 federal deadline. More than half of all tax returns are expected to be filed this year with the help of a tax professional, and the IRS urges people to use a trusted tax pro to avoid potential scams and schemes.

Taxpayers can now visit IRS.gov to get answers to tax questions. Officials say IRS.gov is the quickest way for taxpayers to get help. The Interactive Tax Assistant

(ITA) is a tool that provides answers to several tax law (specific to individual circumstances. Based on input, it can determine a taxpayer’s filing status, if a person should file a tax return, if someone can be claimed as a dependent, if a type of income is taxable, if a filer is eligible to claim a credit or if an expense can be deducted.

The IRS encourages people to file their tax returns electronically and choose direct deposit for more secure and faster refunds. According to Treasury’s Bureau of the Fiscal Service, paper refund checks are 16 times more likely to have an issue, like the check being lost, misdirected, stolen or uncashed. Filing electronically reduces tax return errors as the tax software does the calculations, flags common errors and prompts taxpayers for missing information.

Light Bill Assistance Program underway

(Seguin) -- Community Council of South-Central Texas is announcing the availability of funding for the Comprehensive Energy Assistance Program (C.E.A.P.) provided by the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs. Funds are available to assist qualified families in the following counties: Atascosa, Bandera, Brewster, Comal, Dimmit, Edwards, Frio, Gillespie, Guadalupe, Hudspeth, Jeff Davis, Karnes, Kendall, Kerr, Kinney, LaSalle, Live Oak, Maverick, McMullen, Medina, Presidio, Real, Uvalde, Val Verde, Wilson, and Zavala.

The Comprehensive Energy Assistance Program (CEAP) combines education and financial assistance to help low-income consumers reduce their utility bills. Services include utility payment assistance for electric and natural gas. Applications are now available online by downloading a copy at https://www.ccsct.org/utilityassistance-apply-for-services/ and at your local CS office.

Due to a decrease in funding, we are only assisting priority 1 household with limited amounts of funds. Clients must schedule an appointment to turn in their

application at their local CS office. All other counties should contact their local CS office for an appointment. CCSCT assigns priority to households with the least amount of income and the greatest energy costs. Priority is also given to vulnerable individuals 60 years and over, persons with disabilities and families with children five years of age or under.

At this moment, application processing volume is high and turnaround is taking longer than normal.

Repair, continued.

They are using the funds they raise to maintain the squirrel project. So, every time someone sponsors a squirrel, there is a little extra money there to help cover future maintenance costs and other public art projects. So, we are relying on that funding to help pay for some of those repairs. Definitely, if other people would like to contribute toward those repairs, we would appreciate any financial support so that way, we can still develop more money towards public art and not on the maintenance of the art that we already have. But definitely we want to keep maintaining our squirrels and keep them in good shape and so, that’s why the sponsorship level was a little bit higher than the actual cost of the squirrel so that we have some funds there to keep maintaining the squirrels and if some got damaged, we were going to be able to repair some,” said Kramm.

A total of 20 squirrels have been officially unveiled in the city’s Squirrel Trail Program. Those wishing to donate to the future maintenance of all squirrels are invited to mail a check to the Seguin Commission on the Arts at P.O.

Soup, continued.

And we are like, oh, gosh, it’s so much work but it’s also such a great fun event for the community and it’s free for them. So, we said, ‘let’s do it! Let’s bring it back.’ You know, it’s time to get over this COVID where we are all staying apart from each other. We need to be back together as a community – giving each other encouragement and having a good time together,” said Dr. Weinman. Although held at her office, Dr. Weinman says the Soup Social is not just about her patients but about bringing the entire community

together.

“Over Facebook, we had a contest and five people won by this popularity vote by the number of likes they had on their Facebook posts. So, there’s five recipes that have been submitted by the public and then we are going to go ahead and prepare those five recipes and whoever got the most votes also won an award. They got a VISA gift card so at the actual event, we are going to also have a Taster’s Choice contest so the public will be able to come and sample these five different soups that we have prepared and so, it almost ends up

being where you can have dinner with us. We will have some nice little bread, lots of cookies and water. You go to each one of these different rooms and the different soups are there and they can sample them and see if they like them and then at the end, they are able to put in their vote. Whoever wins the Taster’s Choice also wins a gift card,” said Dr. Weinman.

In addition to sampling free soups, the dental office will be awarding attendance awards every 30 minutes. Folks must be present to win. Seguin Smiles is located at 1460 Eastwood Drive.

Program, continued.

Due to this high demand, we humbly request our client’s patience. Only complete applications with all necessary documents will be processed. Submitting an application is not a guarantee of assistance. We advise applicants to continue to pay their bills on time after submitting an application.

A list of County offices and contact numbers are available on our company website at www.ccsct.org. Please contact your specific county for questions, as each office has different processing schedules and procedures. In 2024, CCSCT helped over 12,064 individuals and families in 6,008 households with an investment of over $7.8 Million dollars. CCSCT is a non-profit community

action agency that empowers vulnerable families and individuals in the greater South Central Texas area to achieve self-sufficiency by eliminating barriers through innovative programs and strong community partnerships.
