Navarro ISD Superintendent Mandy Epley says the structure remains on target to welcome
kids this time next year.
“We are anticipating a substantial completion in November which would allow us to stay on our timeline to move the students in in January. So, we will start the school year next year in the current high school facility. That also makes things work with our current athletic facilities at Erwin Lee as
we execute the 2024 bond project for the new high school’s athletic facility and then as the students come back from the holiday break in December, we will be starting classes in the new year at the new high school so it’s exciting. We are on track and definitely looking forward to that move,” said Epley. Navarro, pg. 3
SHS students to join the workforce during Job Shadowing Program
(Seguin) – Beginning today and throughout various workdays in February, local high school juniors and seniors will be trading in their textbooks and classroom lectures to shadow local business professionals in a wide array of occupations.
This experience will mark the 6th annual Seguin Job Shadow Program.
The Seguin Job Shadow Program is a collaborative effort among the Seguin Economic Development Corporation, Seguin Chamber of Commerce, Seguin ISD, Navarro ISD, Marion ISD and Southwest Preparatory School.
Several companies will be participating in this legacy event, offering 270 job shadowing opportunities.
“Job shadowing is a career exploration activity that offers students a chance to spend time with a professional currently working in their career field of interest,” said Josh Schneuker, Executive Director of the Seguin Economic Development Corporation.
Participating companies include City of Seguin, Caterpillar, CMC Steel of Texas, Guadalupe Regional Medical Center, Guadalupe County, Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority, Gunn Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, Master’s Electrical Services, Northeast Lakeview College – New Braunfels, Paws to Perfection, Playhaus Therapy, Rapid Urgent Care, Rave Gears, River Valley Design Center, Schaeffler, Seguin Chamber of Commerce, Teijin Automotive, Tier One Dental, and United Alloy.
City officials say each job shadow pairing provides
high school students with an opportunity to go to work with the pros. There, they will explore a wide range of career opportunities, learn about various job skills, ask questions, pick up information, and learn first-hand the responsibilities and rewards of employment in a variety of careers.
“The Seguin Job Shadow Program is a great opportunity for Seguin High School students to learn more about the day-in-the-life of a career they are interested in pursuing. On this day, students are exposed to the daily responsibilities and challenges of the job. This Seguin Job Shadow Program gives students a chance to experience those challenges as they happen and reflect on them in real-time with a professional in that career field. In many cases, the individual being shadowed will become a mentor for the students as they continue their path toward a career. We appreciate our partnership with SEDC on this event and others. Without their hard work, our students wouldn’t have access to this experience,” said Sergio Juarrieta, CTE director with Seguin High School.
The Seguin Job Shadow Day was planned in conjunction with Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month, a public awareness campaign that takes place each February to celebrate the value of CTE, as well as the achievements and accomplishments of CTE programs across the country. CTE directly prepares students for high-wage, high-demand careers that cover many different fields, including advanced manufacturing, health care, information technology, hospitality, business management, and many more.

Epley says the current timeline also allows for the refresh, and remodel of the district’s current high school campus.
“We are going to have that second semester when the high schoolers move into the new facility in January of 2026 – they will be rebranding, cleaning and having some refresh projects with paint and some graphics going on in the exiting high school so that it is ready to go when we open in August of 2026 and then the junior high will move over there. Just the one campus moving in January and then the following school year, the junior high will be at what is now the high school,” said Epley.
Meanwhile, Epley says the new high school building is not the only bond facility in the works. Epley says plans are also in place to begin construction on the district’s new second elementary school later this year.
“We are also working very closely with the city to get the progress going on our Elementary South off East Martindale Road closer to the Seguin ISD border. We are seeing a lot of growth in that area and so, that second grade through fifth grade elementary is in the final design phases and we look forward to breaking ground in August. All of our bond projects are well on their way and this summer, families will see changes at our parking lot that face Link (road.) We are completely redesigning that so that we can get more traffic off of (Link) road and onto our property and then, we are also renovating our playgrounds at the
Although it has its eye on current projects, Epley says the district already has plans for even more facilities down the road.
“We are looking at coming back to taxpayers in approximately four years if the growth continues the way it is. So, the East Martindale property is ready to go and then we have properties for what I refer to as Navarro Elementary North which is off of FM 758 and Huber. Our community really wanted smaller schools and so this is what that long range master planning committee which ultimately became our bond planning committee really advocated for – a smaller size elementary, smaller classes and that does require with our growth spread not only to add that elementary in the south but ultimately that elementary in the north to accommodate anywhere from 250 to 400 projected student growth numbers that we will see over the next at least 10 years. It’s an exciting time for us and we are definitely moving forward in planning for that,” said Epley.
The Navarro Elementary South Campus is set to open in the fall of the 2027-2028 school year.
Again, the district, at this time, also has plans to go out to voters in 2027 for the construction of a third elementary school campus. If successful, the Navarro ISD anticipates the opening of Navarro Elementary North in 2030. That’s just shy of its 10 year – peak enrollment projection of 5,563 students.

He died December 30th at the age of 87. He is survived by one brother, Leander Jackson. He was the former Mayor of Marion,Texas. Albert Bruns Jr entered into rest on January 23, 2025, at the age of 71. He was an avid sportsman and was one of the greatest athletes to come out of Seguin, Texas.

Molly Pogor, 99, our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend to many has gone home to our Lord.
Molly was preceded in death by her husband Anton (Tony) Pogor, her parents William and Elsa Reeder, sisters Gladys Timmermann (Elton), Janie Baerwald (Hermon), Willis Harborth (Otto), Sophie Martin (Bill) and sonin-law Dennis W. Zuber.
She is survived by daughters Elizabeth Zuber, Patsy Galanffy and husband Dani along with her son Matthew Pogor and wife Linda. She leaves one sister Junie Wallace, as well as many nieces, nephews and other loving family and friends.
Molly leaves seven grandchildren: Diane Zuber Hrechko, Rita Medellin and husband Jerry, Bryan Pogor and wife Carrie, Sherry Pogor, David Galanffy, Paul Galanffy (Jennifer) and Stephen Galanffy (Natalie).

A lifetime resident of Guadalupe County, Molly spent her early years in Marion, Texas. After marrying Tony, they moved to Seguin and while raising their family she was very active in the community as a scout leader for the Cub Scouts, Brownies, and Girl Scout troops. She also served on the Guadalupe County Girl Scout Board for 10 years. She was employed at KWED radio for 37 years, retiring as the office manager in March 1990.

Abby, a beacon of warmth, kindness, and hospitality, could fill a room with laughter. He had a natural talent for connecting with people. He was a true people person, and his presence brought joy and comfort to everyone he met.
Visitation will be held at Heritage Oaks Mortuary on Friday, February 7th from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with a Prayer Service to be held at 7:00 p.m. A celebration of Abby’s life will be held on Saturday, February 8th at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 206 N. Travis Street, Seguin, Texas; visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m., with services at 11:00 a.m. Services will conclude at the church. Burial services at Fort Sam National Cemetery will be held at a later time and date.
Molly was an active member of Saint James Catholic Church, serving our Lord in every way she could. She was a member of the Choir, Lector Commentator, Eucharistic Minister, and Sacristan. She was also a member of Saint Ann’s Circle, serving as president for several years.
Molly joined the Ladies Auxiliary of the Seguin Fire Department in January 1942. She was awarded a life membership in 1959 and was named Auxiliary Member of the Year three times. She was a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Guadalupe District Fireman and Fire Marshal Association. Molly was elected to the State Board of the Texas Fireman’s Auxiliary in June 1975 and was President of the organization in 1986. As she presided at the 1986 State Convention in Austin she was recognized by the City of Seguin and the Mayor proclaimed June 17, 1986 as Molly Pogor Day. She continued serving on the board for many years.
After retiring, Molly spent her time volunteering as a member of the Guadalupe Regional Medical Center, St. James School Library and St. James Catholic Church.
The family would like to thank Dr. Antonio Flores and the Guadalupe Regional Hospice Services for their excellent care.
Services will be held at St. James Catholic Church on Saturday, February 8, 2025. The recitation of the Holy Rosary will begin at 10:00 a.m. and the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. with Msgr. Dennis Darilek, Fr. Greg Nevlud and Fr. Stanislaus Fiuk officiating. A private interment will follow at St. James Catholic Cemetery. A reception will be held at noon at the St James Church Parish Hall.

Kathryn Louise Wenske Schmoekel, age 91 of Marion, passed away on January 30, 2025.
Kathryn was born on May 7, 1933 in Gonzales, Texas to Hedwig F. (Frankenhauser) and Albert T. Wenske.
Kathryn worked beside her husband, Leroy, at Friedrich Air Conditioning, both retiring after many years of service in 1998. She always had a passion for gardening. Her most cherished times were spent with her grandchildren who knew and loved her as “Granny”. Spending time with all her pets was also a favorite.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her great-great granddaughters, Grace and Vivian Castro, and her siblings, Evelyn Forshage and husband Alex, Ruby Elley and husband Raymond, Ida Mae Mergle and husband James, and Billy Ray Lubbock.
Survivors include her son Rodney Schmoekel and wife Dora; daughter,

Gesick
Edward “John” Gesick, Jr., a decorated U.S. Army veteran, teacher, historian, and passionate advocate for the preservation of local history, died on January 13, 2025, at the age of 81.
Surrounded by his family, he passed peacefully. John was born on March 16, 1943, in Washington, D.C., while his father was stationed at the Pentagon during World War II.
After the war, his family lived in Chicago before settling in San Antonio, Texas. He graduated from Alamo Heights High School in 1961, then went on to Texas A&I (now Texas A&M Kingsville), where he earned a degree in History with a minor in Spanish in 1965. Later, he earned a Master of Education from Boston University in 1979.
Immediately after college, John was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army, where he would serve for 14 years, earning numerous accolades for his service. As a member of the U.S. Army Special Forces, also known as the Green Berets, he deployed to Vietnam, where he was seriously injured in combat. After being sent back to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio for surgery and rehabilitation, John spent part of his recovery working on his father’s farm in Seguin. It was during this time that he made a vow to one day settle in Seguin, a promise he would fulfill in his later years.
John’s military career also took him to several other postings, including Panama; Seoul,South Korea; Grafenwoehr, Germany, and Fort Huachuca in Arizona, where he taught at the Army Intelligence School. He earned numerous military honors, including the Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars (one with valor), two Army Commendation Medals with valor, and a Meritorious Service Medal. He was a proud Green Beret, and his dedication to service remained central to his life.
Following his service in the Army, John returned to Texas in 1979, settling on his family farm in Seguin, building a house, raising cattle, and

John Huckabee, III, age 71 of Seguin, passed away on January 22, 2025. John was born in Tyler, Texas on July 17, 1953 to Bettye June (Bradford) and John Huckabee, Jr.
Johnny graduated from Seguin High School in 1971. He was in the Matador Honors Band all four years and loved music. He attended Howard Payne University from 1971-1975.
Even more than music he loved sports, especially football. He was an avid sports fan and could readily quote player statistics.
After marrying Leigh Olejer in 2012, he became a farmer regularly wearing cowboy boots and a hat. He loved working with the animals, riding the tractor, and tending to the farm.
He loved his church, First Baptist Church Seguin, serving in their security detail, singing in the choir, and attending Bible Study. More than anything however, he loved his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
He was a hard-working tender-hearted man. He was a gentle soul, never in a hurry, always having time to listen to and talk with anyone.

He taught Texas History, World History, and Psychology at Seguin High School and later at Texas Lutheran College, where he was respected by students for his passion and deep knowledge of the subject matter. He was also an active member of the local community, serving as Chairman of the Guadalupe Historical Commission and Rotary Club president. His commitment to preserving the history of Seguin, Guadalupe County, and Texas led him to write several books, including Under the Live Oak Tree; Seguin and Guadalupe County; Historic Guadalupe County; and The Kickapoo: Keepers of Tradition. He was instrumental in the founding of the Heritage Museum of Seguin, a project that was close to his heart, and he remained a dedicated advocate for local history throughout his retirement.
John was preceded in death by his mother, Polly Pinneo Gesick; his father, Edward John Gesick; and his brother, William Henry Gesick. He is survived by his four children, Kimberly (Jeff) Canfield, Laura (Theron) Gesick, Christine (Allen) Long, and Patrick Gesick; nine grandchildren: Cole Canfield; Cameron and Griffin Carlin; Sophie, Graham, Claire, and Amelia Long; Abigael and Blaise Gesick, as well as his niece and many friends.
A funeral service will be held at 10am on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church in Seguin, Texas. John’s family invites you to a public reception to celebrate his life following the funeral service, which will be held at the Heritage Museum in Seguin. All are welcome to gather and share memories of John.

Social Activities Can Delay Dementia Risk By 5 Years
(Chicago) -- A new study from Rush University Medical Center in Chicago has discovered that seniors who are socially active develop dementia up to five years later than those who aren’t. The seven year study followed nearly two-thousand dementia-free older adults while checking in annually to track their cognitive heath. Researchers found regular social activity led to a 38-percent lower chance of developing dementia. The role social activity plays in cognitive health is unclear, but activities like bingo, board games, and conversations activate areas in the brain responsible for thinking and memory.
Hochul Signs Legislation Allowing Doctors to Shield Name On Abortion Prescriptions
(New York, NY) -- There’s a new law in New York State to help further protect doctors from legal trouble for prescribing abortion medication out of state. Governor Hochul signed legislation on Monday that allows doctors to request pharmacies to put their health practice on the prescription label rather than the doctor’s name when prescribing FDA-approved abortion medication. This builds upon previous passed legislation that helps protect New York doctors from states with strict abortion laws that may attempt to impose criminal penalties on New York physicians. Just last week, a jury in Louisiana indicted a doctor from New Paltz in Ulster County for approving an abortion medication for a minor in Louisiana.
NYU-Langone Hospital Cancels Appointments For Transgender Affirmation Care
(New York, NY) - NYU-Langone Health in Manhattan is reportedly cancelling appointments for transgender children seeking treatment. The New York Times reports, the appointments were for two 12-year-olds who had been scheduled to receive implants containing medication that would block puberty. A father of one of the children told the New York Times, his child’s doctor had informed him that because of “the new administration” the hospital will not do the procedure. Earlier in the week, President Trump signed an executive order threatening to withhold federal funding to hospitals that provide gender-affirming treatments.
RI Couple Becomes Parents To Identical Quadruplets
(Cranston, RI) -- A Rhode Island couple is celebrating the successful birth of spontaneous identical quadruplets. Rachel Vargas gave birth to the four identical girls at Banner Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona last week. Sofia, Philomena, Veronica, and Isabel are currently in neonatal intensive care. Vargas’s doctor says the babies, weighing about three pounds each, came out healthier and more developed than they expected. Vargas and her husband came to Phoenix specifically for the specialized care. Giving birth to spontaneous identical quadruplets is very rare, and happens just once in about 40-million births.

The Winter 2025 Regional Job Fair will be held on Thursday, February 6, 2025, from 10 AM to 2 PM at the Seguin Coliseum, 950 S. Austin St., Seguin, TX. The Seguin Job Shadow Program offers high school students real-world experience through hands-on learning with professionals.
