Recent rash of vehicle burglaries reported in local community

Seguin PD stresses proactive tips to not fall

(Seguin) -- Residents are being reminded to lock or even triple lock their car doors. The warning comes after a handful of citizens over the weekend reported vehicle burglaries throughout town including at two local parks.

Stephanie Larrimore, the community engagement officer for the Seguin Police Department, says it looks as though the weather warmer prompted thieves to target the parking lots at both Max Starcke Park and Park West.

“It was within a short timeframe, so we don’t know if they are all related or not but it’s still under investigation. We do have surveillance cameras throughout the city and so that is something that we are definitely looking into,” said Larrimore.

Larrimore says at locations such as parks, it’s often difficult to spot a thief in action.

She says that’s because often, you’ve got families constantly going back and forth to their vehicles. She says it’s also a place where

you see individuals rummaging through their belongings for picnic supplies or perhaps for that missing baseball glove.

“With there being a lot of families going out and with kids, I mean even I have a young one that has a tablet, I try to remember to hide it somewhere where it is not visible or even take it with us inside in a bag or something,” said Larrimore.

Peaceful immigration rally set for this weekend in Seguin

(Seguin) -- A couple of best friends will be exercising the First Amendment of freedom of speech this Saturday in downtown Seguin.

Arianna Hernandez and Anahi Hernandez say they plan to host a peaceful rally in support of those impacted by President Trump’s immigration policy which looks to overhaul parts of the US immigration system including mass deportation.

Opposition to the changes made by the Trump administration will be met with what Arianna says is a peaceful message.

Church invites the public to prepare for next dip in temperatures Coats

plus other cold weather clothing to be distributed

(Seguin) – Although things are warm right now, it doesn’t mean that Seguin won’t experience another dip in the temperature.

With several more weeks of winter in store this season, a local church is making sure that folks stay warm.

Marvel Maddox. of Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church, says the congregation will host a second Cold Weather Clothing West End Neighborhood Distribution this Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“We have coats, jackets, sweaters. We even had people donate blankets so all manner of things to keep your toes warm on a cold night or during the day when you have to be out,” said Maddox.

Maddox says the church hosted a similar event last month but because it was cold, not many were able to make it out. Hopefully, he says this time, they can better prepare all families.

“There’s a pretty big need I believe. We have a number of people that have housing insecurities. I mean, it’s not that they are sleeping on the street but they are having to sleep in some relative’s maybe garage or something like that and so all those folks need some warm stuff to get through a cold night and things like that,” said Maddox. Spirit of Joy is located at 416 Dolle Ave.

Sunrise Rotary raising money for Scholarships at Pre-Super Bowl Bash

(Seguin) -- The big game is being played on Sunday night in New Orleans, but if you're looking for a little fun, excitement and friendly competition -- you don't even need to leave Seguin. The Seguin Sunrise Rotary Club is hosting what it's calling the Pre-Super Bowl Bash. The event runs from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday in the Big Red Barn.

Rotarian Heather Felty says the event was a big hit last year, and they are bringing out more games for you to try. She says there will also be great food on tap for the evening.

“We have rotated through fundraisers. Last year, I think we pretty much found a hit. We had such a great time, and around this pre-Super Bowl time, it kind of gave

a nice little buzz and fun time for gaming. We had laughs, raffles, gamegame-games, amazing food, and fun times. All to support scholarships in the Seguin and Navarro area,” said Felty.

The morning Rotary Club hopes that people will come for the food and fun.

Burglaries, continued.

Unfortunately, however, in many of these cases, Larrimore says doors to the vehicles were left unlocked.

“Vehicle burglaries are sometimes a crime of opportunity and so if you have a door unlocked, somebody is just walking along, and they are pulling the door handles. They are not breaking in because of the fact that it is going to set off an alarm and if your vehicle is parked in front of your house, the last thing they want to do is set off an alarm, so we do encourage people to definitely lock your vehicle,” said Larrimore.

As the Seguin Little League and Seguin Youth Soccer Club seasons get underway this spring, Larrimore advises using extra caution when attending games and practices.

“If you have multiple kids, you’ve got the younger ones who they don’t really care to watch their older sibling play sports -- I guarantee there is a tablet in there. There’s

Rally, continued.

“You know, the reason that we are doing this, and this is not a protest and this is what I want everybody to understand is that it’s not a protest. It is simply a rally for the people who are afraid to come forward to speak and have their voices be heard,” said Arianna.

Arianna says the overall hope is to give many of these individuals who have been living alongside one another in Seguin a chance to be heard.

“We know that there’s a lot of people that are afraid because of everything that is going on -- people who have families and they are scared. They’re hiding. We’ve read. We’ve seen ugly stuff, and this is for us to come forward and do this for everybody who is scared and afraid,” said Arianna.

Organizers say the idea is to give residents the chance to gather and be a part of the message.

Like Arianna, Anahi says they are also hoping that the rally will serve as a festive way to celebrate one another.

“I have a lot of family. My dad’s side of the family is from Mexico. I have aunts, uncles and cousins. I have no problems but just seeing how traumatic it is to people who are dealing with this or who are going through it – who are scared to come out of their house, to just be out in public. We see all over social media that they are all over town, at gas stations asking for your papers. Kids are losing their parents to the system,” said Anahi.

The event on Saturday will include DJ music from noon to 2 p.m. along with free water, shaved ice and a special dance performance by Danza Guadalupana at 12:30 p.m.

an extra phone and that is something that people can easily sell or pawn and get a quick buck for it especially if you leave it in your vehicle. Half of those vehicles were unlocked. Now, that’s not to say that somebody still couldn’t have broken into them. If they saw the items in plain sight, they’d be like ‘you know what, I already broke into one, let’s break another one.’ That’s going to be the mindset. Is it worth breaking that window?’ said Larrimore.

Things to always hide or remove from vehicles include such things as extra keys, wallets, important paper documents and game systems.

Officials say backpacks should also be carefully hidden as thieves often associate those with laptops or other technology devices.

Most importantly, officials ask that all citizens stay vigilant and immediately report any suspicious behavior to the local authorities.

They also hope they come to be motivated in supporting their highly successful scholarship program.

Rotarian Dennis Clarkson says their club does things a little bit differently by seeking out students when they first arrive in high school.

“We started years ago. We started with a project called the Dream Scholars, and what that is, is a scholarship that we end up giving initially to a freshman. I know that sounds crazy, but it's true because what we're doing is incentivizing them to stay in school and to graduate. So, once they do that, then, they get the money, or whatever the money has grown into –(because) we've invested it. We now actually call it a Career Advancement Scholarship, not necessarily a scholarship that you go to a four-year college on,” said Clarkson.

Felty says they also give more traditional scholarships, but they have found making investments in ninth grade students has proven to be a success. She says other clubs are often interested in hearing more about their scholarship program.

“They cannot believe this, because this is such an unbelievably special program. We have merit scholars as well. But (our Career Advancement Scholars are) just a really select team, that you know, school counselors and folks get involved in it to also select very special kids to be a part of this program. (It’s great) to watch them, you know, go through the four years...it’s just great to see that they're proud of being part of that program,” said Felty.

Tickets and table sponsorships are still available via the Sunrise Rotary Club’s Facebook page, or you can call Clarkson at 210-834-1240.

No. 14 Bulldogs Sweep Opening Day, Blank Texas A&M - San Antonio

SEGUIN, Texas -- The No. 14 Texas Lutheran softball team opened the 2025 season with a pair of run-rule shutouts (8-0, 9-0) of Texas A&M - San Antonio on Opening Day at Ed Kruse Stadium.

The Bulldogs (2-0) 8-0 win over the Jaguars (1-5) marked their seventh season-opening win over the last eight seasons as the program improved to 16-9 in season openers since becoming an NCAA institution.

TLU’s pitching staff spun 11.0 scoreless innings over the course of opening day with four different pitchers making appearances. Katelyn Howard (Waller/ Hempstead) threw 5.0 shutout frames to earn the win in game one, allowing just one hit and one walk. Freshman Jordyn Joy (Kerrville/Tivy) won her TLU debut in the nightcap, tossing 4.0 scoreless innings and limiting the Jaguars to three hits with five strikeouts. The staff held the Jaguars to a .118 batting average, scattering four hits - all singles - and two walks while striking out five.

The Texas Lutheran lineup struck early in their first run-rule victory of the season, including four runs on a grand slam off the bat of junior Serena Gonzalez (Corpus Christi/Foy H. Moody). With the home run, Gonzalez moves into a tie with Laura Hernandez (12, 2021-23) for a tie for fifth all-time in program history with 12 career home runs.

TLU added three more runs in the fourth inning, starting with an infield RBI single from Linzee Leal (Corpus Christi/Mary Carroll) that following a Jaguars error led to two runs scoring. Caelee Clark (Montgomery/Lake Creek) followed with an RBI single to score Leal, pushing the Bulldog lead to 7-0.

Howard didn’t need much help as she stymied the Jaguars over her 5.0 innings of work. In just her second career start, the right-hander allowed just two base runners on a single and a walk.

Ainsley Davis (Rockwall/Jesuit (OR)) posted a scoreless sixth inning, navigating around a one-out walk. Caelee Clark would walk it off with a sacrifice

fly to score Hanna Homra (Troy, TN/Obion County).

Serena Gonzalez finished 1-for-3 with a grand slam while Clark finished 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. TLU, fresh off rewriting the record book for stolen bases a season ago, stole eight bases in game one led by two each from Clark and Leal.

Jordyn Joy made her Bulldog debut in game two and tossed a three-hit gem, going 4.0 scoreless innings. The southpaw struck out five with no walks.

Texas Lutheran’s patented stellar defense shined behind Joy, providing a handful of highlight plays to squash A&M - San Antonio threats. In the first inning, Bella Rodriguez (Pearland/Pearland) caught a runner stealing at second. Caelee Clark made a stellar grab of her own on a line drive up the middle.

Faith Hernandez (Dinuba, CA/Dinuba), who made her return to the lineup after a two-year absence, opened the scoring in the first inning with a two-RBI single to left field. A pair of fielder’s choices in the second allowed two more Bulldogs runs to score to double the TLU lead to 4-0. TLU would truly break the game open in the third inning with five runs on four hits. An RBI single from freshman Chesley Swisher (Cypress/Bridgeland) got the inning started before Joy helped herself with a two-RBI single to left field. Annie Kay (Sinton/Sinton) reached on an RBI fielder’s choice that scored Kayla Ramirez (Kingsville/Santa Gertrudis Academy) before an RBI single from Serena Gonzalez would score Kay to bring the game to its final score of 9-0.

Freshman Kezia Alvear (Kyle/Hays) took the ball in the fifth inning and closed things out with a scoreless inning of her own.

TLU returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 8 with a doubleheader against Howard Payne at Ed Kruse Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 2 & 4 PM with all games broadcast on TLU+. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.

A majority across party lines also felt that the federal government is better suited than state governments to address top healthcare issues.

Concerns About Immigrants Seeking Health Care

(San Diego, CA) -- UC-San Diego says President Trump’s deportation plans may scare migrants away from accessing healthcare. Last month the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced two major changes: one allows immigration enforcement in sensitive areas like hospitals. The other limits include who qualifies for the Humanitarian Parole Program and evaluating migrants on a case-by-case basis. UCSD Health sent a memo to staff with company protocols to follow if agents show up. It says security and risk management will handle all interactions.
