(Seguin) -- Thanks to the Seguin Public Library, 125 families now have a home computer.
The library, thanks to its partnership with Compudopt, awarded the computers to families via a lottery system.
Assistant Library Director Hannah Farmer says it was exciting to work with the non-profit organization that refurbishes computers with the hope of getting them into the hands of those families who need
them. She was especially amazed by the number of people who applied for the chance to be drawn.
“We were really happy and amazed by how many people registered and were able to get a free computer on the Compudopt computer giveaway. It was a great turnout,” said Farmer.
Farmer says the best part was, of course, seeing the reactions of those winning a computer.

(Seguin ) -- The good times sure did roll into the most successful year yet for the Seguin Education Foundation Mardi Gras fundraiser.
SEF Executive Director Jill Nash says she was thrilled to learn that this year’s fundraiser was a recordbreaking year– bringing in a total of $163,500.
“Each year, we always try to increase our goal and last year, the funds raised was $119,000 and some change. We were definitely hoping to meet or beat that total this year, and we absolutely surpassed it,” said Nash.
This record-breaking total also fueled another exciting fact that Nash believes should be celebrated.
“One thing that we are especially proud to share this year is that since we started in 2004, we have officially hit $1 million in grants given to the Seguin ISD,” said Nash.
This year’s Mardi Gras event was held in late February at the Seguin Coliseum. It included a host of games, plus vacation raffle, live and silent auction, and a catered meal from Burnt Bean.
Nash says Seguin’s generosity is what makes a real difference for Seguin ISD students and teachers. She says leading the charge this year was Co-chairs Steve Parker and Bryan Sphan plus an incredible board of directors.
“Our Seguin Education Foundation Board of
Directors are comprised of many wonderful business owners throughout Seguin from small businesses to large businesses and their shared partnership with wanting Seguin to be the place for people to live, learn, grow and play -- they work very hard at helping us bridge the gap between the businesses and the school district so we can show and build that support for our students and staff at Seguin ISD,” said Nash.
In addition to raising money for innovative classroom tools and programs that otherwise could not be afforded through the regular school budget, Nash says the SEF this year, has elected to earmark a portion of the funds for its Fund-A Need campaign.
“One thing that we were able to do is our Fund a Need which was selected this year for our district counselors and what that is, is funds raised during our Mardi Gras to give out to our counselors at each campus to help support the resources that they need for student materials for health and wellbeing. This year, we were able to raise $10,800 to give directly to those counselors,” said Nash.
The community is encouraged to give to the SEF year-round. They are encouraged to call the SEF office at 830-379-0325. They may also visit seguineducationfoundation.org.
Computers, continued.
“It was a really fun time too, being able to be there to see all the happy and smiling faces when they got their new computer. I know I heard from people talking about how it will be easier to watch some videos and stream some things at home for education and entertainment. We were also able to showcase some of the library resources and encourage people that were here to get their computers to get into the library and get a free library card. So, we saw some faces that we don’t normally see at the library which was really cool and I know having a laptop computer will definitely help them use some of the library’s resources over the mobile devices -- just a bigger screen that works a little bit better with some websites,” said Farmer.
Hannah says library officials worked hard to get the word out so that Compudopt would know that there is a real need in this community. She says the hope is that the library will again be selected to host the program in the future.
“It will all depend on Compudopt’s funding. They get a lot of corporate donations and they do anticipate getting
more donations. The idea is that corporations donate money, but also the computers that are gently used and Compudopt refurbishes them and gets them back to the communities and they do want to come back to Seguin based on the success of this event. We are just now sure yet when that will be,” said Farmer.
And while folks should always be wary of a potential scam, Farmer applauds the public for trusting in the library and its many programs designed to benefit all citizens.
“One other funny thing is a lot of people were like, ‘I wasn’t sure at first if this was a scam but then I saw the library’s name on it and so I trusted it.’ and I said absolutely, we would never partner with anybody without doing the research and Compudopt is a legitimate 501c3 non-profit organization,” said Farmer.
According to Compudopt, more than 41 percent of families still lack access to a computer at home.
To have been eligible, families could not have a working computer at home. Tablets and cell phones don’t count. In addition to taking home a laptop, winners also received a twoyear warranty on the computer along with free tech support.

Mary Louise Still Donegan, age 87 of Seguin, passed peacefully to glory, joining her beloved husband, Benton Donegan. She left this world on March 8, 2025, the 14th anniversary of his death. Mary Louise was born on August 14, 1937, in Ft. Worth, Texas, to James Oscar Still and Mabel Florence Perry Still. She was the oldest of four girls, including Patricia Ann Still Lowe, Ina Elizabeth “Betty” Still Brown, and Carol Lee Still Powell. Her family moved to Houston in the summer of 1943 when her father entered WWII. Mary Louise attended public schools in Houston and graduated from Milby High School in 1955 and then Rice Institute, now Rice University, in Houston in 1959.
Mary Louise worked part time throughout high school and college. She participated in several clubs and on the swim team in high school.
Upon graduation from Rice, Mary Louise went to work for the Social Security Administration as a Claims Representative in Houston, was promoted to Field Representative, and transferred to San Antonio in 1961. She met her future husband, Benton Donegan, at a Social Security presentation she made for the Kiwanis Club in Seguin. She was again promoted but soon resigned to marry Benton on September 21, 1963, after which she moved to Seguin. She was a devoted wife and mother, always volunteering at the children’s schools as room mother, classroom helper, PTA member, and volunteer with various booster clubs. She was a committed volunteer at her church, St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. She taught Sunday school, served on the vestry several times, including as the first female Senior Warden, and spent many hours working on the Altar Guild and in many other roles and on numerous committees. In
Alaska, England, and several bases throughout the United States. She enjoyed her visits to Hawaii and Germany in the 80’s while visiting her son and family. Germany was her favorite; she was fluent in German and had a wonderful time talking with the locals she had the pleasure of meeting. She thoroughly enjoyed life and was a great cook, but baking was always a “favorite passion” of hers. She had a keen sense of humor and was quick to joke with those around her. She was always surrounded by laughter and is now surrounded with her husband and all of those who preceded her in death.
When she was around 95, she heard on TV that some woman drank a shot of whiskey every day and that is why she had lived so long. So, she decided to try it. Mind you, this coming from a woman who never drank whiskey and never drank much alcohol in her life except an occasional beer or wine. So, her doctor gave the nursing home a prescription to have a daily shot. This became the joke of the nursing home about her and her whiskey. Mind you, it was a good thing, and she did not really like how whiskey tasted, but she always said it was good for her pain. What pain? She only talked about pain when she talked about whiskey!

(Washington, DC) -- The White House is withdrawing the nomination for President Trump’s pick for CDC Director. According to a senior administration official, former Florida Congressman Dave Weldon will no longer attempt to be confirmed as the next head of the CDC. It came just hours before Weldon was set to testify before a Senate committee at his confirmation hearing. It’s unclear why the nomination was withdrawn.
(Washington, DC) -- Wildfires and other weather extremes are making cancer care more complicated. A new study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute showed that patients recovering from lung cancer surgeries within an active wildfire zone needed longer hospital stays than those in areas with no fires. The longer stays could be attributed to the reluctance of health care providers to discharge patients because of the environment, including housing or safety issues. The study’s authors emphasized that the results show that wildfires pose broad threats to health, beyond smoke exposure.
(Austin, TX) -- The number of measles cases is still on the rise after an outbreak in West Texas. Health officials have confirmed at least 258 cases across multiple states. Most of the cases are in unvaccinated children in Texas, but cases have been popping up in nearly a dozen other states too. At least two deaths have been connected to the outbreak, one in Texas and the other in New Mexico.
