Seguin ISD superintendent contract up for discussion during special board meeting
(Seguin) -- The Seguin ISD Board of Trustees is slated to meet for a third time to discuss the contract of Superintendent Veronica Vijil. The board met twice over the last month to conduct Dr. Vijil’s annual evaluation and to consider any changes to her contract. Because it’s a personnel issue, all the discussions have been conducted in closed session.
The board has offered no details on how it feels about Vijil’s overall performance. It also hasn’t been publicly discussed why the board is meeting again on this issue.
The board’s agenda calls for the board to again meet behind closed doors for a “consultation with legal counsel regarding the superintendent’s contract.”
There is no action items listed after the executive session, which means it is unlikely that the board will
have any public discussion about the issue that night

Hazardous waste collection day deemed a success in Seguin
(Seguin) -- There reportedly was no lack of hazardous waste lingering around homes in the city of Seguin.
At least that’s the final report by city officials following the city’s first-ever hazardous waste collection day. In fact, on Saturday, March 8, the city was forced to end the collection effort early.
Jennifer Sourdellia, the public information officer for the city of Seguin, says it wasn’t even noon and
already the city had maxed out on the number of items it could collect.
“I would say it was a huge success, and it was very well attended. We collected quite a lot of materials over the time that we had that was open. In fact, we almost collected 31,000 pounds of hazardous waste so all that hazardous waste won’t go out into our landfill which is awesome,” said Sourdellia.

GRMC earns re-designation as Texas Ten Step Hospital
Recognition
applauds maternity care, breastfeeding support for new moms
(Seguin) -- Guadalupe Regional Medical Center (GRMC) is honored to announce its re-designation as a Texas Ten Step (TTS) Hospital Partner. This designation, provided by Texas Health and Human Services, recognizes birthing facilities that implement policies and practices that follow the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding. This re-designation is an important milestone in our commitment to continuing to improve maternity care and optimal breastfeeding support for new moms and their babies.
As part of the Texas Ten Step program, Guadalupe Regional Medical Center aligns with the World Health Organization and UNICEF’s Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, an initiative that supports moms and their babies with breastfeeding initiation, breastfeeding exclusivity for a minimum of six months, and the continuation of breastfeeding for a year and beyond.
As a designated partner, GRMC has improved overall patient breastfeeding rates by implementing evidence-based health care practices, including facilitating early skinto-skin, babies rooming-in with their mother, training staff on breastfeeding management, lactation support, and more.
All practices are designed to set new moms and their babies up for successful breastfeeding, improved infant health, and increased overall patient satisfaction. Studies show that when mothers experience Ten Step practices in the birthing facility, they are more likely to reach their goals of exclusive breastfeeding.
“Breastfeeding is a journey, and no mother should have to navigate it alone,” says GRMC’s International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, Analia Cano.
“At GRMC, we take a team-based approach to ensure every mom receives the education, support, and encouragement she needs to
feel empowered in feeding her baby. This re-designation reflects our deep commitment to both mom and baby’s well-being.”
In Texas, 86 percent of new moms choose to breastfeed in the hospital, but only 24 percent continue to exclusively breastfeed until their baby is six months of age. The TTS program works with birthing facilities to develop environments where policies and practices support mothers’ informed infant feeding decisions.
Improving maternity practices is also particularly important for families who are most vulnerable to poor health outcomes. While health disparities have an impact on racial and ethnic groups and those living in low-income and rural communities, breastfeeding can serve as an equalizer to ensure every baby gets a healthy start. Research indicates that when the Ten Steps are followed, racial disparities in breastfeeding initiation are reduced.

Comal County confirms rabies case with cat Guadalupe County residents encouraged to take precautions
(New Braunfels) -- The City of New Braunfels and Comal County are continuing to urge residents, especially those in northern Guadalupe County, to be cautious with unfamiliar animals on the heels of a recently confirmed case of rabies.
City of New Braunfels Animal Welfare employees say they picked up a cat late last week in the 200 block of Cross River Street after reports that the cat was attacking other cats in the area and behaving strangely. Subsequent testing confirmed that the cat does have rabies, a deadly viral disease that affects the nervous system of mammals, including humans, and is primarily transmitted through the saliva of an infected animal, often through bites. Local health officials remind everyone to be cautious with unfamiliar animals like foxes, raccoons, bats, skunks, and stray dogs or cats.
As a result of the positive rabies test, the City of New Braunfels is implementing a temporary 4-week suspension of the Trap, Neuter, Release (TNR) program for feral cats within a one-mile radius of the location where the cat was found. If there are no further positive rabies cases in that area during that time, then the TNR program will resume for that area.
New Braunfels officials say before calling to report a cat or other animal, take time to observe its behavior and look for the following signs:
• Partial paralysis or the inability to walk normal
• Circling or staggering as if disoriented
• Acting aggressively for no reason
• Acting unnaturally tame
They say if you observe these signs, do not approach the animal and contact your local Animal Welfare agency as soon as possible.

Sourdellia says despite having to cut things short, the city is pleased with the overall success of this event.
“We actually had a grant and because of this grant, we did have a limitation on how much we could collect so we were really surprised, I think, that we collected so much but we were happy that we were able to collect it,” said Sourdellia.
Sourdellia says the great response by the community only motivates the city to potentially host the event
again in the future.
“And the turnout that we had at our event, definitely shows that this is something that is needed again in the future and hopefully, we can get another grant and make this happen for Seguin,” said Sourdellia.
Items for the hazardous waste collection day were collected in the Seguin Coliseum parking lot. Items that were collected included such things as herbicides, pesticides, paints, gasoline, bleach, automotive filters and fluids and/ or drain cleaner.

Breastfeeding provides health benefits for babies, such as reduced risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), ear infections, stomach-related infections, asthma and childhood obesity. In addition to health impacts, breastfeeding a baby for one year could save a family between $900 and $2,000 in annual health care and formula expenses.
“Expectant mothers look to the Birthing Center at GRMC to help them grow their families and care for their new babies,” says Lauren Riggs, BSN, RNC-OB, Director of Women’s Services. “It is up to our team to provide maternity care that supports, protects and promotes breastfeeding to our newest Texans — and puts them at the forefront of our care.”

Marion’s Tesch wins 200th while Seguin baseball and softball stay unbeaten in district
(New Braunfels) -- Marion baseball coach Tim Tesch earned his 200th career win on Tuesday as the Bulldogs run-ruled New Braunfels Long Creek 15-2 at Long Creek High School.
“That’s not a coach Tesch thing, that’s a program thing,” Tesch said following his 200th win. “That’s kudos to these kids, they come to work every day. They put in the work. They do their job. The wins have to go to somebody, but to me that goes to those kids out there and every kid that’s played for me for the last nine years.
“It’s been fun, we’ve
coached in a lot of baseball games and kudos to my assistants, we couldn’t do that without them and the support of the admin. So, we’re just gonna keep trucking and try to keep winning ball games.”
As for the ball game, Marion 1st baseman Huck Schoenvogel went 4-for-5 with two three-run homers and a double off the top of the wall in left and right-hander Jack Wells tossed a complete game. The Bulldogs are off for the rest of Spring Break. Marion will get back to District 27-3A play next Tuesday when they play at Great Hearts Northern Oaks.

Kevin Lynn Mathis, age 59 of Seguin, passed away on March 18, 2025. Kevin was born on July 21, 1965 in Seguin, to Sylvia Eva Pesson Weldon and Roy Lynn Mathis.

He is preceded in death by his father, his stepfather, George “Guy” Weldon, his mother-in-law, Alice Smith, his sister-in-law, Jacquelyn Smith and nephew, Matthew Vincent.

BG James Langton Carroll (US Army, Ret.), 93, of Seguin, Texas, passed away on February 27, 2025. Born on October 22, 1931 to Colonel James Vincent and Mary Carroll. He earned degrees from West Point in 1954 and Washington University in 1963. In the Army, he protected the Little Rock 9. He retired from the Army reserves in 1984 and from Contel in 1990.

Leslie Helen Montague Carver, age 40 of Seguin, passed away on March 13, 2025. Leslie was born on October 23, 1984 in Seguin, Texas to Brenda Leigh (Kersey) and Rodney Mark Montague.
Leslie had many favorites during her lifetime: she loved jeeps, loved floral daisies, loved horses, loved Mexican food (even in Maryland) and reading and crocheting. Trips to the beach or anywhere surrounded by water was always and enjoyment. She lived in Maryland for twenty years and ran a daycare for twelve years as she loved children. Her most precious times were spent with her family and friends whom she loved fiercely.

Gladys, who everyone knows best as, “JoJo”, grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas, with a large family surrounded by many cousins and had many stories about them growing up and making many memories there. She was a gifted quilter and enjoyed quilting with her church group in Marion and received many awards for her talents. She enjoyed donating her quilts back to the church. Her strong Catholic faith and her service to her community did not go unnoticed.
Her children recall her love for country music and the sound of Ray Price on the radio. She enjoyed travelling and going to concerts whenever she could, and a popular running joke between family members was to “bow your heads when Ray Price was singing.” She enjoyed the Grand Ol’ Opry, and attended many shows and concerts, watching what she couldn’t attend on TV in later years.
Her grandchildren and great grandchildren remember her most for the weekly dinners of roast and “Jojo’s Spaghetti” after afternoon practices

and before late-night games. The grandchildren shared many memories of playing spades, Uno and board games, playing with the army men, and having meals around the dining room table together. Those were some of their most cherished memories. She was always sure to have whatever her grandkids liked on hand so that everyone felt special. Whether it was their favorite games, toys or their favorite meals, everyone who was with her knew that they were the center of attention. They enjoyed playing out at the farmhouse feeding Tubby, a pony on the farm, sugar cubes and apples. While the animals were never allowed in the house, she always found a way to sneak them a snack and give them a little pat. Alongside those memories, her granddaughters speak about all of the ways she impacted them through her poise and caring heart, whether she was teaching them how to be proper ladies at the dinner table or teaching them how to embroider cup towels.
Though gone, never forgotten. This gorgeous, sweet, sassy woman gave so much to the people and family around her and has touched many lives. For many of the people around her, she was the strongest woman they’ve ever known. She will be loved for eternity by her family and God above.

Laing
David A. Laing, age 78 of Seguin, passed away on March 10, 2025. Dave was born in Franklin Park, Illinois on December 31, 1946 to Helen (Plaza) and Edwin Laing.
Dave enjoyed working and was the owner and operator of Gage Tool and Manufacturing since 1995.
No one loved high school football more than Dave. He always supported Navarro High School Football. Other interests included driving on his Kubota mowing the grass. If you found him at McDonalds his regular order always included a triple cheese burger. While in the kitchen he loved to cook, bread making one of his favorites. He also enjoyed fishing off of his pier at home and people watching at the beach.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brother, Don Laing and his brothers-in-law, Jack Fanella, and Jim Templin, and his best friend and business partner, Sam Conlin.
Mattke
Milton Herman Louis Mattke, 95, of Seguin, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and greatgrandfather, passed away peacefully Saturday, March 15, 2025.
Milton was born on October 12, 1929, to Ernst and Ella (Schraub) Mattke. A devoted man of faith, he was a lifelong member of Christ Lutheran Church of Elm Creek where he was baptized, confirmed, and faithfully attended services every Sunday.
Milton attended Concrete School through the eleventh grade before beginning his career as a lineman with Southwestern Bell, later retiring from AT&T. On November 6, 1949, he married the love of his life, Mary Bode, with whom he built a life filled with love and family. After moving to Corpus Christi, he and Mary welcomed their son Michael. Later, they moved back to Seguin, where they were blessed with a daughter, Michele.
After retiring from AT&T, Milton worked at the Guadalupe Regional Medical Center alongside Mary, where they shared lunch together every day. He eventually retired from the hospital as well, enjoying his well-earned time with family. He and Mary loved to travel and held a special place in their hearts for the beach, where they would take their entire family every summer. No matter how busy life got, Milton always made time for his family. He especially enjoyed coaching little league and spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Emma Jean McKenzie, age 92 of Seguin, passed away on March 13, 2025. Emma Jean was born on September 15, 1932 in Seguin, Texas, to Emma Ida (Hilbrich) and Earl Raymond Martin.
Emma Jean attended Seguin Schools 1st through 12th grade graduating from Seguin High School in June of 1951. She attended Southwest Texas State University from 1951 to 1953. In February of 1954 she married Stan McKenzie.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, her parents and her sister, Earline Rabe and her husband Roland, brothers-in-law, Dr. Charles Eldon McKenzie and Kenneth McKenzie, and sister-in-law, Dorothy Day.

Virus Spreads Like Wildfire
(Austin, TX) -- An outbreak of measles in West Texas is now up to 279 cases. That’s roughly the same number of cases that was seen nationally, all of last year. Statistics released today by the Texas Department of Health and Human Services show the fastest growth continues to be in a rural community that has the lowest immunization rates in the state. They’re urging everyone to get the shot.
UN Food Agency Warns Bird Flu Spread Threatens Food Security
(New York, NY) -- A United Nations food agency is warning that the continued spread of avian flu is threatening food security around the world. The Food and Agriculture Organization is citing the loss of hundreds of millions of poultry worldwide, as well as cow milk. The F-A-O says the situation requires a coordinated global response. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the U.S. has recorded 70 bird flu outbreaks in 41 cattle herds and 24 poultry farms. There’ve been no reported cases of human-to-human transmission with the CDC saying the risk to the public remains low.
VA Secretary Says More Job Cuts Are Coming During Visit In Nashville (Nashville, TN) -- Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins says more job cuts are on the way for the health system that treats former military members. Collins confirmed that about 15 percent of the workforce for the VA could ultimately be let go while speaking with WSMV-TV during a visit to Nashville yesterday. He added that at least 40 employees across the state have been laid off so far. Collins claims the cutbacks will not interfere with patient care.

(Boston, MA) -- Children’s Hospital in Boston is worried about losing up to 230-million-dollars in funding from the National Institutes of Health. Governor Maura Healey warned at least half of that total is at risk as the Trump administration continues to limit federal grant programs. She said it’s important to educate members of the administration about the impact of cuts in medical research. Hospital officials say federal contracts to monitor flu vaccines have also been eliminated.

Salvation Army Office
The Seguin Unit Salvation Army office is located at 205 North King Street. The office is open to receive requests for assistance weekly from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
Volunteers Needed
The Guadalupe Valley Young Marines need volunteers. They promote a healthy, drug-free program and need males, 19 years and up who would like to see the program grow by contributing time to help future citizens, boys and girls 8 to 18.
