FROM THE Publisher
he February issue of Seguin Magazine is always a special one, as it is our Mary Lee Roberts Citizen of the Year and VISION Awards edition. We began accepting nominations this past fall for individuals from our community that go above and beyond to make Seguin and Guadalupe County a better place. The recipients of these awards don’t normally go looking for recognition, they do wonderful things from the goodness of their hearts and never think much of it because it’s just who they are. That’s where we step in and make sure that these hometown heroes are given the recognition they deserve. Inside this issue you will find stories about local residents, from all walks of life, doing amazing things in our community. This is just a small snapshot as we are truly blessed to have so many wonderful people who devote their time and energy towards causes bigger than themselves. You may or may not recognize some of these faces, but once you read their story and all that they give back to Seguin and Guadalupe County, it may trigger a connection. I encourage each of you to find a way to give back to your community. It doesn’t have to be something big, just a little bit of your time to help those around you. So, without further ado I present to you the 2024 Mary Lee Robert's Citizen of the Year and VISION Award winners. Congratulations to all of the recipients and thank you for making Seguin the best place to be!

Sheryl Sachtleben & Marcos Saenz A Remarkable Partnership Dedicated to Making a Positive Impact for our youth

heryl Sachtleben and Marcos Saenz’ work in juvenile probation guided them to help children avoid turning to crime. Together, the pair opened Seguin Youth Services with the goal of reducing delinquency in 1995 and created a program that gives children the ability to grow and thrive in their community. In that 29 years, the couple has worked with hundreds of children. And it’s their dedication that has earned them the Mary Lee Roberts Citizen of The Year Award. “I’m thankful the doors are still open and we’re able to continue helping kids,” Sachtleben said. “How can you go wrong when you see all of these kids every day. We love giving them rememberable 10 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING
moments they’re never going to forget.” Seguin Youth Services started with a one-year grant and a washateria on San Antonio Street. Sachtleben and Saenz met as they worked for Guadalupe County Juvenile Probation. They hit it off really well the first time they worked together, but their friendship and partnership didn’t start until later. When Sachtleben started working in Intensive Supervision Probation she saw a greater challenge. “I remember thinking you’re dragging the horse through the water,” she said. “You want so much for that kid, but they’re just not putting in the effort. You’re always going to have juvenile crime, kids are always going to commit
crimes, whether or not what we do would decrease.” Wanting to help stop that crime before it started, Sachtleben sought a grant to create a delinquency prevention program. “Once you start determining the things that really do get kids to commit crimes, you can help deter them,” she said. “You gotta have the kids, get the families, get the friends and have the school system and neighborhood involved. I think that just helped us develop a more cohesive program covering all of the areas. This is straight up juvenile delinquency prevention, with the whole goal being they don’t commit crimes and they graduate high school.” As Sachtleben wrote the grant, she
did it with Saenz in mind. When she asked him to join her in the venture, he was a little hesitant. It was a hard sell, Sachtleben said. “I had nothing to offer, not much of a paying opportunity,” she said. “I wrote the grant knowing what I had, knowing what we could do, me in his neighborhood.” Working in juvenile detention isn’t easy, Saenz said. “These kids would come in there and half of them didn’t even know what they were doing or why they were in there,” he said. “You get to know them, their stories and realize they don’t have a place to go. They needed a place to go so they wouldn’t get in trouble. That is what we do, give them a place to come.” The center opened May 1, 1995, and Saenz began the following month. Things started off small, but as word got around the neighborhood, more children showed up, and so did funding from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency. At one point the organization had three centers, each working with more than a hundred children, Sachtleben The pair said they would follow at least that first child through his school career, but it didn’t stop there, Saenz said. “But by the time one leaves, you’re already in love with another one,” he said. “So, I guess I’ll be here forever, because I can’t leave a couple of other ones that I like.” Sachtleben said it goes deeper than that. “The real agreement is ’til death do us part. If something were to happen to one of us, the other one would probably not be able to go on,” she said. “We offset each other. What he does, I can’t do and what I do, he can’t do. If we were in different relationships, it probably would have been a lot harder to go this long, but we share that passion.” Throughout the years, the center found support from unlikely allies in the neighborhood, who saw the good they were doing. They also got help from the school district as the then-Ball Elementary School Principal Sherwood Thompson handed them the keys to the 12 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING

school gym for use in the afternoons, Sachtleben said. Seguin Youth Service staff and volunteers help the children with homework and educational intervention, they hosts various activities that include games, parties and trips, even the opportunity to learn a new skill, trade or hobby. The center also instills respect to each other into the children, Saenz said. “When you’re coming from an area of detention, you’re not taking crap off nobody,” he said. “But here, it’s all about respect. It took us a while. That first year was our toughest. But after we established that we love you, we care about you, things really start to change.” The staff and volunteers keep the children engaged in various activities, and in the time of technology, that’s not always an easy thing to do. “One of my best enjoyments is how engaged our kids are,” Sachtleben said. “These kids of all ages play ring-aroundthe rosey and musical chairs and have a good ole time with it. Nobody worries about their phone, nobody’s on their phone, you don’t have to tell them that. They’re busy and it is structured and it’s goofy, but they just have a great time.” The ultimate goal is to see the children succeed, and Sachtleben and Saenz have seen it. Especially when those former students come back for a visit. The couple’s dynamic is complimentary in how they speak about each other and with the children. “He’s a good man, he’s a good teacher here,” she said. “He’s got a lot of patience. I’m not good with groups, I’m not good with ideas, I’m not good with anything that requires patience for focus. I’m just good for the love.” Saenz joked about Sachtleben’s popularity among their children. “When she gets out of the car, she’s like a movie star,” he said. “I’m trying to get the group and they’re surrounding her.” Sachtleben and Saenz said they were both humbled and honored for the nomination “I’m not here for an award,” Saenz said. “I’m here for the kids.” 14 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING

VISION AWARD
Jesus 'Jesse' Trinidad Jr. Empowering the Community through cultural support and Compassionate Giving

esus “Jesse” Trinidad Jr.’s service to his community started young and has continued well into adulthood. He’s helped form chapters of national organizations, purchased land for a community garden, stepped into service of his church, and so much more, earning him a Seguin Gazette’s VISION Award. VISION stands for Volunteers In Service of Our Neighborhoods, and Trinidad’s dedication embodies that. Trinidad is a Seguin native who didn’t really get involved in schoolbased organizations other than the National Honor Society. However, he was active in the Catholic Youth Organization at Our Lady of Guada16 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING
lupe Church. He and fellow members performed the “Passion” play at Joe F. Saegert as a fundraising endeavor for the church as it was constructing a new facility. “We were able to raise $1,000 to buy one of the pews for the church,” he said. He graduated from Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic School in 1963 and then attended Texas A&M, where he obtained his Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. Trinidad worked at SMI — now known as CMC — for a few months before his acceptance into the Vista program, where he earned additional training and then worked in Billings, Montana, for a year.
He eventually returned to Seguin, started working at the steel mill again and joined the Jaycees and later the Elks Lodge. Texas Lutheran College’s — now University — director of Mexican American Studies asked Trinidad and a few other area men to create an organization that would help Hispanic residents with any issues or challenges they faced, Trinidad said. “It was the Mexican American Information Service Center,” he said. “We came up with the idea of setting up an office and getting a phone line, and people could call in and tell us the issue people wanted us to try and solve.” Trinidad’s assistance in starting organizations extended to helping
found the Seguin chapter of League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Chapter 682 in May 1975. “I’ve been a member ever since. I’m a founding member and still active,” he said. “I’ve held just about every position there is in the organization. I’ve even held a state-wide position. I was elected deputy state director for youth.” Through the organization, he was able to help purchase land for Teatro de Artes’ Cultural Center and the LULAC community garden, located on Eighth Street. Trinidad has long served as Knight of Columbus, first at St. James Catholic Church and now at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, following the creation of its own chapter. He has helped with several activities through that organization, Mary Jo Filip wrote in her nomination letter. “He serves on the Cemetery Committee and helps with organization activities that provide wheelchairs for the disabled, coats for … the Child Welfare Board and food for the pantry at Our Lady of Guadalupe,” she wrote. “On his own, he collects and then delivers clothing and personal care items to the migrants being served through Catholic Charities, sometimes traveling weekly from Seguin to San Antonio to make the deliveries.” The Seguin native said he is honored to receive the nomination and award, but it doesn’t do the work for the recognition. Trinidad credits his servant’s heart to his upbringing in the Catholic church. “I went to catholic school, and the nuns would teach us that it was better to give than to receive,” he said. “I remember getting an award for being the first one to donate. I’ve always been that away.” Jesse Trinidad is married to his wife, Cecilia Trinidad, Ph.D., RN, who is the BSN Coordinator of Texas Lutheran University’s Nursing program. He has one son and a granddaughter. 18 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING

VISION AWARD
Diane Anderson-Glover Thinking of Others to Foster Community Transformation
Story by Alex Lowe, Special to the Seguin Gazette Photos By Felicia Frazar and Courtesy Diane Glover
D
iane Andersen-Glover’s lifelong commitment to service to the community has not gone unnoticed. She has an impressive list of community-based volunteer efforts and activities in service to others that Andersen-Glover performed throughout the years. It’s that dedication to the community that has earned her one of the Seguin Gazette’s VISION Awards. Andersen-Glover credits family for her lifelong commitment to serving her community. “I was raised by my parents and my grandmother to always try to be a giving, caring type of person,” she said. “I have tried to follow advice from my mother and grandmother (and others) to always pay it forward, and always try to do the right thing, even if no one is watching” Andersen-Glover worked as a 911 dispatcher for the Guadalupe County Sheriff ’s Office from 2004 until retiring in 2017. “First responders — people like police, EMTs and firefighters — were always the types of people I hung out with,” Andersen-Glover said. “So when the opportunity presented itself for me 20 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING
to work there I applied at the sheriff ’s office back in 2004.” She recalls the mindset that was necessary to perform such an important role. “You have to constantly play the what if game, you know, what if that bad call comes in tonight,” she said. “We had a saying where we never used the ‘Q-word,’ meaning quiet, because you never knew when things could go bad.” Prior to that Andersen Glover worked at the Texas Department of Corrections — Institutional Division for several years and drove a school bus for a couple of years. Since retiring in 2017, Andersen-Glover has become even more prolific in her service to the community. She currently volunteers at the Guadalupe Child Welfare Board where she has served as president since October of 2023. Prior to that she served as vice president and secretary. Andersen-Glover is actively involved with the yearly Guadalupe Child Welfare Board/Tyson Earth Day Event, where she teamed up with the local plant to create a trash clean up event in the rural county. The inspiration came after a fellow board member posted on social media that her and her
children would pick up trash for any small donation to the board. A resident who wished to remain anonymous volunteered to make a yearly contribution of $1,000 to the board if the member would pick up trash on Zion Hill Road. She holds annual birthday fundraisers and selects between the local Child Welfare Board, the Region 8 Council of Child Welfare Boards and the Texas Council of Child Welfare Board as the recipient of the donations each year. Andersen-Glover also is involved with Christmas shopping for children in Child Protective Services. Since 2019, Andersen-Glover began serving as the Region 8 Council of Child Welfare Board president after the Texas Council of Child Welfare Boards asked her to rebuild and restore the regional council board that disseminated several years earlier. Andersen-Glover played a role in the ASAP (A Serenity Activity Pack) Bag Project for Region 8, which covers 28 counties. “Guadalupe County was the third county in the state to launch and have all patrol vehicles equipped with an ASAP,” she said. “These are duffle bags filled with items to assist with bringing comfort to
children when officers encounter a child who needs comfort.” These events can include during a traffic stop, domestic violence situation, a fire or other devastating event, Anderson-Glover said. They include various items like stuffed animals, books, toys, baby wipes and more, she said. “If an officer encounters a child who is being removed from their home for some reason and they have their personal belongings in a garbage bag or Walmart bag, they are asked to give the bag to the child to carry their personal belongings with dignity,” Anderson-Glover said. “The bag will be replaced at no charge to the department. This project was started and introduced by Hunter Beaton with Day 1 Bags. Hunter’s Motto is, Dignity Not Trash.” In Guadalupe County, Anderson-Glover maintains the project and ensures the duffle bags and contents are re-supplied with donations the ASAP Bag Project received. Other projects include the Foster Quilt Project, which was started and introduced by Day 1 Bags, for its annual Foster Child Graduation Project; the ECHO (Educators and Children Helping Others) Bag Project. For all of her efforts, Anderson-Glover was selected as the Texas Council of Child Welfare Boards 2022 Volunteer of the Year. When not focused on volunteer efforts, Diane and her husband Brett raise their 6-year-old granddaughter, Brylee, one of 15 grandchildren. She also participates in various Guadalupe County Jeepers and the New Braunfels Trail Team 6 (NBTT6) clubs events. These two clubs collect donations of food and other items for the food pantries and other organizations, and are involved with the Wreaths Across America and several other community-oriented events. “Think of others, not yourself and you earn your own Jewels for your Crown,” Anderson-Glover sums up her philosophy on her lifetime of service to the community. 22 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING

VISION AWARD Master Sgt.
Felisa Ramirez A veteran's Compassion for her Fellow Service Members and Community
Story by Nolan Alexander Photos By Felicia Frazar and Courtesy Felisa Ramirez
A
Seguin woman’s acts of service in the community through multiple organizations have impacted veterans, their families and the community as a whole. It’s her continued service that has earned retired Master Sgt. Felisa Ramirez, U.S. Air Force (1982-2004), one of the Seguin Gazette’s VISION Awards. Service to others is something Ramirez was taught early in life. After Ramirez served her country for 22 years and retired, she immediately rolled up her sleeves and got to work serving veterans in in the American Legion. “I joined the American Legion when I moved to San Antonio and I was active,” she said. “I came to Seguin in 2013 and transferred my membership to the post here. I served in different capacities and different positions, but I eventually became post commander.” During her tenure as commander of the American Legion Post 245, from 2020 to present, she’s had a singular
mindset of helping the veterans while simultaneously getting the organization more involved with the community, Ramirez said. “The goal is to promote veterans services, but we also do a lot of service in the community,” she said. “We are active with the Seguin Police Department and its Blue Santa, the Women’s Violence Shelter and help at the Child Advocacy Center.” Outside of the American Legion, Rameriz finds time to run or participate in other local organizations. She is the co-chair for the Field of Honor, a member of the Seguin Veterans Ministry, participates in Feed my Sheep, volunteers for Wreaths Across America and so much more all while holding a full time job. And that is why retired Chief Master Sgt. Donald Ingram, said it was a no-brainer who deserved the honor. “When I saw the Facebook post I immediately thought of Felisa,” he said. “I haven’t seen somebody as engaged
as Felisa is. It just was an automatic instinct to want to nominate her. I felt compelled to nominate her and wanted to recognize somebody who does outstanding things for the community.” Ingram and Ramirez have known each other for a more than four years, but grew their friendship when the two were the Legion commanders of their respective posts. “I met Felisa through American Legion 245 while I was the Legion commander in New Braunfels Post 179 and we became friends and exchanged goals for the two towns,” Ingram said. “I moved to Seguin post because I knew Felisa and what she was doing down here was great.” Her volunteer work helps a lot of people and families of Seguin, which is why she is a beacon of this community, Ingram said. “I know a lot of people who volunteer around here in Seguin and Guadalupe County and are doing great and wonderful things, but Felisa stands head GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING ~ SEGUIN 25
and shoulders above them,” Ingram said. “What is striking is she is so down to earth and does the little things behind the scenes. She doesn’t mind getting her hands dirty and will do whatever it takes to help and get things done.” Doing these charitable acts is something the retired veteran loves to do and sees it as an opportunity to help others in need, Ramirez said. Even if there is some award or recognition at the end of it, that is not the end goal, Ramirez said. “I think overall I never look for these awards,” she said. “I treat it as you do a job and hope good things happen because of your service.” A lot of people in Seguin and Guadalupe County do a lot of great things, but it’s going to be hard finding a better person to receive the award, Ingram said. “Felisa is the president of this and the commander of that, but her motivation at the end of the day is a pure servant’s heart,” Ingram said. “She will give you the shirt off her back. If you find someone better than her, God bless you.”

VISION AWARD
Michelle de Leon Celebrating Entrepreneurs and Enriching Youth in Our Community
Story by Stan Leland, Special to the Seguin Gazette Photos By Felicia Frazar and Courtesy Michelle De Leon
S
eguin resident Michelle de Leon is not the first in her family with a heart for serving and she won’t be the last. She has an extensive resume of volunteer service to the city, local schools and other community organizations. Her work has not gone unnoticed as she was nominated and selected as a Seguin Gazette VISION Award winner. Vision stands for Volunteers In Service In Our Neighborhoods and much like those winners before her, de Leon embodies that. Her involvement started at a young age as she emulated the kindness of her paternal grandmother Clara Vega, who was the head of the Jefferson Elementary School’s cafeteria for more than a decade. She had the reputation of helping students who didn’t have money for lunch. She would ensure they received something to eat, de Leon said. “She encouraged me to always speak up for those who didn’t have a voice,” de Leon said adding her grandmother worked hard at bringing family together as well as the neighborhood. “Today she would be called a great facilitator but to her, she would say she was just being family with people.“ 28 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING
De Leon’s dad, Ruben Zuniga continued the tradition of community service as he lead the Jaycees back in the 1980’s. When de Leon was about 10 years old, Zuniga decided that Seguin ought to have a lighted Christmas tree in the city square. “I can remember driving to the Christmas tree farm, in Fentress on an 18-wheeler to pick out a big tree,” de Leon said as she smiled. “I have a picture of me standing on the bed of the truck with this huge tree, for Seguin.” As far as de Leon knows it was the first lighted tree in Central Park and the city has had one every Christmas since. De Leon started her involvement within the Seguin community when she was 5 years old. She was a Brownie in Girls Scouts and participated in baked sales, and fundraisers and was often the top cookie salesperson for the troupe. She later competed in soccer, twirling, and pageants. De Leon loved to perform at family reunions and lead pep rallies. She also led the student council in both middle and high school. “I joined just about every club the Seguin High School had from being in color guard in the Mighty Matador band to being an officer in Youth
Culture Awareness,” she chuckled. In high school, she met Chris de Leon and 10 years later they got married after they both graduated from Texas State University, as first-generation grads. When their daughter Serenity was in kindergarten, Michelle attended a meeting and learned about the Destination Imagination program. “I recall Mrs. Pam Krippner, the director of D.I. and facilitator of the gifted and talented program said the only way we could guarantee Serenity to be on a team, was if I would be willing to coach,” she said. “So I leaped and agreed to try it for my kids.” For 17 years she coached not only Serenity through the program, but also her son Leo. Michelle’s husband Chris became the assistant coach, opened his garage and tools to the teams and built the crates to transport the props needed for the productions. It was truly a family affair, Michelle said. “I have loved seeing the progression of how shy kids become confident and able to express their ideas,” she said. Our teams took on many community service projects. It was amazing to see how our DI teams became our DI family and we developed a passion for the program.”
Michelle’s daughter, who is in graduate school at Texas State University has taken the Destination Imagination baton from her mom and is serving in a leadership role, as a Challenge Master with facilitating judges and appraisers, for the past five years. Her son Leo has started his own successful business and they enjoy traveling with him around the world. Throughout her life, Michelle contributed to various booster clubs, including Cheer Moms, the Mighty Matador Football & Sports Boosters, Project Graduation, PTC officer, Soccer coach, Varsity Choir, Z-club and many years as a Drama Mama officer. She developed programs and fundraisers such as the VIP cards, for different organizations to give students in the theater department an opportunity to go to New York and helped the Choir students travel to Colorado. This past year, she decided to “adopt” Jefferson Elementary School, through the Seguin Education Foundation and delivered gifts and food for all the staff. Michelle was also a judge for the “Best Dressed” at the Guadalupe County Fair. Additionally, for many years she has volunteered for Blue Santa by wrapping presents and raising money by ringing the bells and singing in front of Wal-Mart, for the Salvation Army. Michelle is currently an officer of the Zonta Club and for the past 15 years, she has also served as an Ambassador for the Chamber of Commerce. One of Michelle’s favorite duties as an ambassador is attending the grand opening of businesses and welcoming them in Seguin. “It’s amazing to see their vision, taking an idea from a sketch on a piece of paper to an actual brick-and-mortar business,” she said. “I love encouraging and supporting that kind of courage”. Michelle has lived her whole life in Seguin and she and Chris have no intention of leaving. “We love Seguin, the community, it’s our home,” Michelle said, “It’s our pleasure to give back to the city we love.” 30 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING
