Wedding planners and vendors across the U.S. report record numbers of inquiries and bookings through 2024 thanks to COVID-19 wedding postponements. According to projections published in both the New York Times and The Knot, an estimated 2.6 million weddings will take place in the U.S. in 2022, a record high, leading to vendors and venues finding themselves overbooked and, in some cases, increasing prices. That’s for all kinds of reasons, many of which COVID has made worse. Global delays in supply chains for florists, caterers and other vendors, and service industry labor shortages. There’s not much you and your partner can do about any of it. Don’t twist yourself into knots over systems far outside of a single mortal’s control; approach the problem from a new angle. There’s no need to burn the midnight oil to book all of your vendors a year out — wedding boom or no wedding boom. Instead, plan a wedding that works considering the situation, and lets you happily join with your soon-to-be-spouse because in the end that’s all that matters.

Newly licensed officiant asks the important questions on a very special day

of friends and family and have a closeknit community of people working on the wedding,” he said. “So they asked me to officiate.” There were no classes to attend to become an officiant, said Forsberg, a Cibolo resident who grew up in the Canyon Lake area before moving to the Dallas/Fort Worth area after college and then returning with his wife to live in Guadalupe County, where she grew up. There was a lot of literature on the subject, which gave him some guidance on what was to expect leading a wedding. Forsberg paid close enough attention to get the job done. The wedding went off without a hitch in October. Forsberg said it was a delightful affair and, so far, the only wedding he has officiated. However, he is not against performing the duties if called upon again. “I definitely would,” he said. “I think it was a very cool experience. It was a very humbling experience for someone to ask you to be a part of one of the most important days of their GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING ~ SEGUIN 11

elieve it or not, it doesn’t take a lot to become a wedding officiant, and it’s a pretty good gig. So said a Guadalupe County man who took steps to become official and married his friends last year during the pandemic. While becoming an officiant might seem like a huge deal, Jason Forsberg said otherwise. “It’s not very glamorous,” he said. “We filled out an online form and became an officiant. The bride helped me do it. [She] had officiated a wedding before. So she just kind of directed me to the link.” Forsberg has been friends with a prospective groom for about a decade. They bowled together in a league, traveled together, camped together and hung out together. When his buddy popped the question, he and his blushing bride-to-be popped another question and requested Forsberg’s presence at the affair as the one to lead the ceremony. “When they decided to get married, I think they wanted to do a lot

lives. It was eye-opening for me as far as being a part of that.” He would definitely participate if the couple wanted him to lead a vow renewal ceremony or something like that in 10 or 20 years. And he probably wouldn’t have to change much to make it as successful a second time around. But as far as hiring out his services to the highest bidder, that’s another story. “I think I would do it again the same way for a close friend or family,” he said. “I don’t know that I’m an officiant for sale, if that makes sense.” Things have been so hectic for many over the past nearly two years. The coronavirus pandemic has changed the way of life for many and affected so much of everyday life. Forsberg said the way this couple planned their ceremony allowed a break from pandemic cares and made for a beautiful wedding for all who attended. “I don’t think I would have changed anything the way it was done, whether there was a pandemic or not a pandemic going on,” he said. “They didn’t have any bridal party, so it was me, the bride and the groom standing up there in front of all of their friends and families.” He doesn’t know if calling it a trend is proper, but he thinks people in his age group are going for smaller weddings, pushing aside the elaborate, bountiful affairs. Forsberg said he and his friends are in their late 30s and early 40s, so the ones who get married now do it in more subdued ways than a decade or so earlier. It’s a sign of changing times, he said. “We had humongous wedding parties, and all of our friends were in it that way,” Forsberg said. “Now, we don’t care about being in a bridal party and wearing a tuxedo. We’d rather be in a closer-knit thing with family, even though these people aren’t really my family.” Huge weddings aren’t for this crowd, he said. “It’s basically for the kids,” he said. “This was a grown-up deal.”

he saying “Always a bridesmaid, never a bride” is often thought of when my family and friends talk about me and weddings. Of course, the movie “27 Dresses” also comes to mind. There was a time in my 20s and early 30s when my family and friends were getting married. Guess who was selected to stand up with them on those big days? You got it, and I was truly honored every time. I was a bridesmaid in seven weddings in those years, serving as the maid of honor in four. I was dubbed an unofficial bridesmaid in an eighth wedding, but the purchase of a dress was not necessary. As most know, brides traditionally select the bridesmaids’ dresses in a style and color of their liking. However, in more recent years, brides began to allow the individual members of their wedding parties to choose styles that match their body types, as long as they fell within the color parameters. Two of the seven brides gave us that option, as it is a newer trend.

The dresses came in different styles — strapless, thick straps, thin straps, loose-fitting, form-fitting, free flowing, needing a petticoat. I had them in three shades of blue, purple, black, orange and red. The price tags also varied from as little as $32 to as much as $400. The question arises: What do you do with all of these one-time-use dresses? So many thoughts come to mind. Some may be like me and keep most of those dresses as mementos of a time we all gathered to witness the love the bride and groom shared. Others may opt to take a different route.

Alterations There is the classic suggestion of shortening the dress to give it a slightly different look for a more formal occasion. The dress can be refashioned into something a little bit smaller for a child. Those looking to really change it up can use dye to alter the dress’s color from a lighter hue to something a little bit darker. Some might consider deconstructing the dress and using the fabric to make something new and different. For example, they can piecemeal the skirt with a new top and pair the dress top with a different skirt. Or rip the fabric apart at the seams and use the materials for another look. The material can also be used for something other than clothing, like creating a purse, shawl or pillows.

Reuse for a different occasion Sometimes those dresses come in handy for Halloween costumes, themed parties or formal wear. They can be donated to women’s shelters, re-sale shops or thrift stores for others to enjoy. Some might hand them down to a teen for an upcoming prom or a school collecting dresses for students who may not have the funds for an elaborate gown to grab a quality piece for the formal occasion. The truly creative can get together with their friends and have a lot of fun with a trash-the-dress photo shoot. t the end of a wedding, the newlywed couple makes a quick escape to their next destination. Sometimes it is from the chapel to the reception, or it’s from the reception to the start of their honeymoon. The couple chooses from various options — their own vehicle or the more widely-known choice, a limousine. However, some will opt for a more unique experience; that’s where C&C Classics drive in. Chalmers and Cindy Gable, owners of the classic car business, offer their services for a fee. “We buy, sell, trade, sell on consignment classic cars, trucks, motorcycles,” Chalmers said. “Part of it is driving the cars that we have for special occasions, most notably, weddings, even though we’ve done birthdays, anniversaries, quinceanera and commercials. We’ve driven for the Marion schools for free for the kids.” When contacted, the Gables send the bride and groom photo options, and the couple can decide whether to use the C&C Classics and which vehicle to make their great escape. “People just normally contact us through the car club or through wedding planners,” Cindy said. “We have a couple of wedding planners that know about us. their custom-built garage for couples to choose from, including a teal and white ’57 Chevy, which starred in a movie and local theater production, Chalmers said. “I’ve got a picture of when one of the high school’s borrowed our ’57 Chevy for a stage production of ‘Grease,’” he said. “They actually drove the car on stage during the live production. It was also in the movie, ‘Knight Rider 2000.’” While the Bel Air is a movie star, the couple’s 1964 Chevy Impala Super Sport convertible has its own story. Chalmers initially bought the car in 1966 from its original owner, but in 1970 sold it for a more fuel-efficient vehicle. “He traded it in for a Toyota because of gas mileage,” Cindy said. “He got $500 for it on trade-in.” “Now, that car is worth somewhere over $100,000,” Chalmers said. After several years, Chalmers relocated his car and asked the owner if he would mind parting with it. But he had no luck. Over time, the couple became friends with the owner and his wife, and one day Chalmers got his break. “It took me a long time to find it; then it took me another 20 years to convince the current owner he needed to sell it back to me,” Chalmers said. “I worked on him for 20 years. I finally got it back after 40 years.” They work closely with local mechanic Mike Carroll, who has helped restore and modify the Impala’s engine. The couple has worked in the classic car business for about 30 years. It wasn’t until they retired, they began doing it full time. But still, they limit how much they do, so they can fully enjoy their retirement. Driving for a friend’s wedding gave the couple their jump-start in the driving business. “It turns out, we drove to the wedding, and they had a wedding planner,” Chalmers said. “The wedding planner asked if we would be interested in doing this, and we said, ‘sure.’ The word spread. C&C Classics has led us down some really interesting pathways.”

ne might think being in the thralls of a deadly pandemic sweeping the world would make planning a wedding a nightmare. But a Guadalupe County couple said that wasn’t the case for them. Kinsey and Tyler Morrison said their “I dos” just before Halloween 2021 and, because they put in some forethought, the wedding went as smoothly as one could expect, maybe even smoother. “You’re always expecting something to come up,” Tyler said. “It never really did. We talked about it before; we were just kind of rolling throughout the day, just going with it, with whatever happened. But there was never a time we had to do that. “Everything just followed how it was supposed to go.” The Morrisons live in Cibolo after leaving San Antonio a couple of years ago. Kinsey said they met online and started a romance about three years prior. Tyler knew after their first date that he would ask her to be his bride. A year later, he popped the question. “It was Christmas Eve,” Kinsey fondly recalled. “He proposed at home in front of the Christmas tree. It was ... a quiet thing, and then we went and celebrated with family and friends.” Tyler asked Kinsey’s mother and father for her hand in marriage. The couple’s friends and family knew before Kinsey what Tyler had planned. They kept his secret and helped him pull off the holiday proposal. Barely allowing her time to bask in her engagement, Kinsey and several of her family members were diagnosed with the coronavirus. “We got engaged on Christmas Eve, and then myself and my whole family ended up getting COVID over 28 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING

New Year’s,” Kinsey said, adding that she and her fiancé initially wondered what the diagnoses would mean for the wedding. “We were very hesitant at first. After a couple of months and it kind of simmered down a little bit, we were more excited to start planning.” Of course, the pandemic plays as a backdrop to most everything these days. The couple had to consider its ramifications and how COVID-19 could affect their wedding. Being a healthcare professional, Kinsey is as in tune as most regarding the situation. Deciding to move forward with the wedding was fairly easy; they would have to take some precautions, the couple said. They chose to consider their guests’ health and comfortability, Tyler said. “I would say we wanted everyone to feel comfortable with their own decisions that they’d made, and if someone wasn’t going to come because of that, we weren’t going to hold that against them,” he said. “Everyone has to make their own decisions.” Kinsey and Tyler opted for an open-air setting for the festivities. After some searching, they found the perfect venue, Hideaway Creek in New Braunfels. A friend’s family owns the business, and the couple was lucky to find it. “It was all outdoors, so everything was perfect,” Kinsey said. “I was afraid of it being indoors. I was just nervous about that.” Owners of Hideaway Creek had preferred vendors they suggested Kinsey and Tyler work with, which made things easier, she said. They had difficulty finding a florist and a photographer because so many already were booked. Costs were another consideration, Kinsey said. “Prices were a lot more increased,” she said. “The flower cost was twice as much as normal. I don’t know if that’s the demand for it or what, but that was crazy. … As far as the planning process, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be.” She thinks they found the perfect venue and date, Oct. 30. Everything was beautiful and enjoyed by all, Kinsey said. Planning a pandemic wedding doesn’t have to be difficult, Kinsey said. “I think if you plan it right, then I don’t think it matters,” she said. “I really liked the fact we did the outdoor wedding. I feel it made all of our friends and family a lot more comfortable as well. And, as far as I know, nobody got sick.” Fears of having a super spreader event crossed her mind. But she tried to avoid that with some of her decisions. While pandemic concerns were there, nothing would stop her from her big day, Kinsey said. “I personally would not let the pandemic slow down or stop any sort of plans as far as marrying Tyler,” she said. 30 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING
