f you’re feeling bummed about the cost of gas ruining your summer travel plans, then it is time for you to sit back and relax with a glass of your favorite wine or local brew, delectable food, a good book, and sultry tunes. Each article in this issue will make you eager to visit every destination, don’t worry though, they’re all close enough that you won’t have to empty your gas tank while doing so. That means the cash you save can be put to better use; for example, by being spent on your favorite bottled libation. While I am more of a beer and spirit drinker, something that I considered while on a team-bonding winery and brewery tour in Seguin is that women account for the majority of wine sales, and upon doing some statistical research online, it seems that the rise of women imbibing correlates to the rising numbers of young female professionals. It makes sense that women are drawn to wine because it is “emotional,” meant for sharing, and a drink that elevates and broadens their experiences of the world. As someone who grew up in a home that suffered under the awfulness of alcohol addiction, I know the emotional and health consequences of drinking too much. But for me, and for so many of my friends, wine provides not only a means for relaxation and connection over great conversation, but also education and exploration. So take a look inside this month’s issue where you’ll find information and great stories about Seguin’s local breweries, wineries and a hidden gem vodka distillery. Since they’re all close to home, you won’t have to pull out all the stops just to get your foot into the door. Stay thirsty, Seguin.

tepping through the door of Tess Coody-Anders’ bookstore and bar is eerily reminiscent of cracking open a good book, with every step feeling like the turning of a page and each exquisitely-eclectic room suggesting the sensation of starting an exciting new chapter. This home to intellect, intrigue, and inspiration has spared no detail or desire, as it offers a refuge for Seguin’s bookworms. The quaint yet breathtaking store immediately instills a sense of peace and comfort, paired with an impressive selection of written works, scrumptious treats, and carefullyselected beverages.

The bar boasts an exquisite and extensive selection of wines and craft beers from Seguin and surrounding areas. The lounge area is perfect for lighthearted conversations, philosophical debates, a game of scrabble with friends, or just a quiet corner to enjoy a locally published-magazine. After only a few minutes in the company of Coody-Anders, her love and passion for the written word are abundantly clear as she thoughtfully showcases all the features and amenities of her bewitching bookstore and serene saloon. Coody-Anders and her husband Heath Anders have certainly let their local love shine brightly as Tess is a Seguin high school alumna and Heath is a Seguin native. Their local pride have roots spreading all over downtown and beyond. As their dream of starting a local haven for the movers and shakers, deep thinkers, and readers of Seguin has finally come to fruition, they have turned their “one day we would love to” into a “today we finally have.” “I love my Seguin and I really love my downtown,” Tess said. “I’m committed to it, and this is going to be a great way to meet new people and get to know people you may not have even known have a shared love of books.” Their affection for the area shows in the bookstore clearly. Except for the books themselves, every inch of the building has been stitched together using other local small businesses and resources, using the community itself to raise this testament to tranquility. As Tess said, “We are doing everything we can to create these concentric circles of connections with small businesses.” Their commitment is evident in every nook and cranny of this wonderland of written work, from the locally-sourced brews and unique décor to the locals themselves. After delaying their initial plans during the pandemic, they used that time to better prepare for a running start to join the ranks of other small businesses in the area. This establishment of literature and libations not only offers an impressive collection of books and brews, but also 12 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING

an equally remarkable staff, including a very knowledgeable chef, a skilled and seasoned bar manager, and astute and attentive proprietors. The only thing more exciting than this new addition to downtown Seguin is the plans it has for the future in the form of events and functions, including but not limited to book signings, book club meetings, and local thespians reading to children every other week. The shop also has future plans to be a venue for local musicians, aspiring authors, and poets to express themselves in a safe and nurturing environment. Tess and her husband hope to cultivate a melting pot of likeminded people to converge together and converse about their shared love of books or to exchange their personal philosophies and ideas. Whether it’s Oscar Wilde and wine, Ray Bradbury and a beer, or just Doctor Suess and a sandwich, this splendid sanctuary for the senses can be enjoyed by all ages. As this new release is added to the shelves of Seguin’s downtown, there is no doubt it will be a beloved classic – the kind that can be revisited time and again with old and new friends while enjoying a refreshing beverage and a good book as the worries of the world fade away.

events but especially noted the unique opportunities during family-friendly, monthly goat events. “It is a huge surprise at how many people enjoy the goats...they are unbelievably soft,” said Michael Poole. The goats bring out a good mix of people, from the big cities and from Seguin, and allow them to relax and try something different, Melissa said. The goats take that relaxation to another level by melting away the expectations and stress of modern life in mere seconds, Events Coordinator Susan Wooten said. “The goat cuddle sessions are almost like animal therapy in the way they get people to open up,” she said. The Pooles created Blue Lotus as a passion project, and it was clear to see their bubbling excitement for the sanctuary of relaxation they have created. With an abundance of flavors of mead and wine, from slushies to infusions, the options for drinks are endless. Whether guests buy a bottle or opt for a tasting before committing to a whole bottle, it is the experience and atmosphere that will relax them more than anything. In the near future, they plan to open a few wine barrel-shaped vacation rentals on property that looks ridiculously relaxing. Complete with pool and goat cuddle access, these rentals are sure to feel like a vacation a world away from the hubbub of the cities that are just a hop, jump and skip away. Blue Lotus gets its name from a special plant that was used in ancient Egypt to promote relaxation and euphoria. And while the owners cannot legally put the plant into their wine, they strive to create a euphoric experience in all they do. “People come here to have a good time and enjoy the finer things in life,” Wooten said. Blue Lotus Winery is not only the perfect place to create the perfect combination of wine, cheese and conversation but also probably the surest way to guarantee some smiles and genuine connections with some sweet baby goats. 28 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING

eguin Brewing Co. has hosted guests in its downtown brewpub for several years and owners and staff continue to expand the business’s offerings. In recent months, the company opened up its libations to go further than the craft beers for which it is famous, said Ethan Black, taproom 30 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING
manager. Seguin Brewing Co. also kicked up a notch its entertainment offerings around March by beginning to have live bands play regularly, he said. “It seems like people like music in Texas in general,” Black said. “It seemed like everywhere you go, there’s live music everywhere you go.” In the beginning, Seguin Brewing Co. had a band called Mike Garcia do a set. The band plays some Country, some Rhythm & Blues, some Bluegrass, Black said. He learned about the band through social media. The site helped him explore other avenues and increase the number of acts showing up to rock the brewpub. “I put some ads out on Facebook and in different groups on Facebook,” Black said. “Then I got pretty much bombarded with requests for people wanting to play. We never have a shortage of people wanting to play.” The long list of acts wishing to perform at Seguin Brewing Co. is for good reason, said members of The Mike Day Band with Robby V & Clint Lipsey. As the trio geared up for a gig on a recent Friday night at the brewpub, they shared high praise for the venue. It was their second performance and they hoped for more, bandleader Mike Day said. “We love it,” he said. “That’s why we asked to come back. We love the Seguin Brewing Co.” While going through a sound check and preparing for the show, Day talked a bit about how the band formed. They met at an open mic event and other gatherings in the Spring Branch/Bulverde area about a year ago. They tossed around the idea of playing together and did a set or two around the region, Day said. Their sounds meshed and they formed the band. So they planned to continue playing gigs and returning to Seguin Brewing Co., Lipsey said. 32 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING

“If they’ll have us back, if we don’t screw up this week” he said. There will be plenty of chances to hit the stage at the brewpub, Black said. He has bands every weekend. The venue is large, holding upwards of about 200 people. Plus, they have the ability to host parties inside and out, Black said. “We’ve done parties where we close the road and we have a party outside in the street,” he said. “That’s something we’re looking to do again, close the road and have parties in the street with different and and stuff.” Seguin Brewing Co. in recent months went from just offering beer to having a full bar with various liquor options, Black said. The sky is the limit and Black said he hopes to help take the brewpub as far as it can go, all the way up.

BS Brewing is dishing up a fresh, delicious selection of locally sourced foods at the Family Table, the business’ built-in kitchen. “It is a chef-driven menu,” BS Brewing owner Brian Schmoekel said. “We take great care in selecting the food we use. We try to source as locally as possible.” The brewery gets its meat from Next Gin Meats and Granzin’s, the buns from a bakery in New Braunfels and the sauces, well, those are all hand crafted by chef Carson Cummings. “I have a passion for figuring out how to make things, especially things that I enjoy,” Cummings said. “You can taste the difference between a bottle of ranch versus a fresh, homemade ranch, poblano sauce or barbecue sauce.” The menu offers up a selection of brewpub basics including burgers, fish and chips with Cummings’ special touches. “Everything on our menu is something that I enjoy thoroughly,” he said. “When I go to a restaurant, these are the things that I would order. Fried chicken, fish and chips, burgers, those are all things I kind of judge a restaurant based on those things. That is how we conceptualized the menu and we just want to take things that a lot of places do and do them really well. I put a lot of love and care into each and every one of those items and let the food speak for itself.” Along with the locally-sourced and handcrafted feasts, the Family Table boasts all gluten-free fares. “We took great care in trying to keep things as healthy as possible,” Schmoekel said. “All of our nuggets are hand-cut and battered, our cod fillets are hand battered as well, nothing is processed. Everything that goes into the fryers is gluten free. It is an important selling factor for people looking for that.” 38 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING

The idea to expand the brewery’s options came from the pandemic, when businesses like BS were trying to survive restrictions. The brewery saw a rotation of food trucks visiting the business, bringing about various fares. Schmoekel noticed how much the adult guests enjoyed the offerings, but they rarely served up something for children. This, along with wanting to give patrons something more permanent, was the push Schmoekel needed to add a kitchen. Schmoekel’s drive and Cummings’ passions have created the perfect pairing at BS Brewing. “Brian and I both love what we do out here,” Cummings said. “We love serving the people that come out here. We just want everyone that comes out here to be part of our family. That is why it is the Family Table.”
