SEGUIN, TEXAS

Welcome There’s an awful lot going on in Seguin right now, too much to stuff into only 48 pages. We have a brand new library and high school on the horizon. We have modern new city parks in the system and continue to improve existing ones. We boast a diverse and robust economy with more businesses looking to relocate here, including Siro Group USA. More rooftops are sprouting up everywhere you look as more people are calling Seguin home.

we can do is give you a little taste of life in Seguin, whether you’re just visiting or thinking of making Seguin your home. With that in mind, this magazine is intended to be useful whether you’re new here, or you’ve spent your entire life here. Consider this your handy guidebook to experiencing all this wonderful community has to offer.

We’re also home to a top-rated university, a state-ofthe-art hospital, and trendy new restaurant offerings. Heck, we even have our own amusement park complete with roller coaster.

We hope you come and stay awhile. Welcome to Seguin.

Yet while Seguin is growing and thriving, we still give off that classic small town vibe where the Guadalupe River provides the backdrop to quiet neighborhoods where folks still know each other.

What’s in a name that almost was Seguin was built on land granted by the Mexican Government to Sir Humphrey Branch, under the Emprassario Grant of Green DeWitt. This land grant, recorded in the State Land Office at Austin, bears the date of May 1830. Branch perfected his grant by settling on the present townsite in November 1831. About 1834, the area settlers moved to Gonzales for protection from the almost-constant attacks by Indians.

PREVAILING WINDS Southeast

Prior to 1838, Seguin was known as Walnut Springs. When it was found that another locality in Texas had previously recorded the name of Walnut Springs, Texas, the shareholders voted to adopt a new name. The choice was between Tuscumbia and Seguin, and Seguin won by 11 votes. The name of Seguin honors Juan N. Seguin, who was a colonel in the Texas Cavalry at San Jacinto. On March 24, 1846, an act by the First Legislature read as follow: “ … be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Texas that the town of Seguin be declared the Seat of Justice in the County of Guadalupe.” Then on March 30, 1846, Guadalupe County was created from parts of Bexar and Gonzales counties. By this Act, Guadalupe County became one of the first 10 counties created by the Legislature of Texas and Seguin actually became a county seat before there was a county to actually be the seat of. The city of Seguin was incorporated in 1853, with John R. King as its first mayor. A copy of the “Incorporation of Seguin” was printed in the Seguin Mercury, one of Seguin’s first newspapers. The Galveston and Harrisburg Railroad was built through Seguin in 1875. The first public school building was erected in 1889, but the first school was taught by Reverend David Thompson in 1842.

Did You Know? • I n the early days, there were many beautiful rock fences that marked the property lines of the early settlers. Remnants of these can be seen at the east end of Nolte Street and at the corner of East Ireland and North Travis Streets.

World’s Largest Pecan Billed as the “World’s Largest Pecan,” the gargantuan nut is a tourist stop that pays homage to Guadalupe County’s key crop. But the one in front of the courthouse isn’t really the “World’s Largest” — despite the sign. That honor was snatched away by Brunswick, Missouri, for a few years before a larger nut was crafted in Seguin to retake the title in 2011. That pecan, which travels to parades and special events throughout the area, makes its home at the Texas Agricultural Education and Heritage Center right outside town at what is known as The Big Red Barn.

• “ Texas,” the horse ridden by Theodore Roosevelt in the charge of San Juan Hill in the Spanish-American War, was given to Roosevelt by his cousin, Colonel Moore of Seguin. • S eguin is famous for its oak trees. The many beautiful oaks of Seguin have names of historical background. Many are estimated to be 500 years old or more — some even as much as 1,000 years old. • O ne of the most famous race horses of Seguin, in the days after the Civil War, was named Seguin, and it carried our colors to win in the State Races in Austin in those days.

The area celebrates the honored nut with Pecan Fest every fall, and H-E-B offers a seasonal ice cream in their Creamy Creations line at the start of each year called Texas Vanilla Seguin Pecan.

Living life on the

river

C

an you imagine what Seguin would be like without the Guadalupe River? Whether its wrapping around the golf course and playgrounds at Starcke Park or widening into one of the many lakes dotting the river, the river measures the pace of life along its banks. A wide variety of animals, including birds, reptiles, fish and insects, call the river home. This plethora of wildlife adds to the enjoyment of living and playing along the river. However, it also means that there must be rules and regulations that protect the wildlife. Efforts to keep the water in its natural state not only benefit the wildlife, but keeps the river and lakes as a welcome retreat for anglers, boaters and water skiers.

10-county district, which includes Guadalupe County, as the Guadalupe River winds 431 miles from its source near the town of Hunt in the Hill Country to where it dumps into the Gulf of Mexico at San Antonio Bay. GBRA employees manage the operation of drinking water and wastewater treatment plants, water quality testing, hydroelectric operations, water rights and the delivery of stored water from Canyon Reservoir. The river’s water sustains the area’s most essential needs and has been the root of the region’s most desperate moments. While the Guadalupe usually meanders through Seguin, several floods in the past two decades have heightened awareness that its peaceful nature can be deceptive.

While area anglers are lured to the river by largemouth bass, Guadalupe bass and channel catfish, many other visitors enjoy opportunities for boating and swimming. The Guadalupe’s natural beauty has made the river an attraction for residents and tourists.

“Water is an awesome power, and the floods of 1998 and 2002 were evidence of that power. People who live along the river have become much more conscious about the river and its potential to flood,” previously said LaMarriol Smith, GBRA’s manager of communication and education.

Headquartered in Seguin, the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority oversees the water resources of the GBRA

The river’s watershed covers an area of 6,616 square miles while collecting runoff from rainfall, streams,

tributaries and springs flowing from the Edwards Aquifer. Heavy rainfall can have a devastating effect as the water accumulates and rushes downstream. Four of the larger man-made lakes — Lake McQueeney, Lake Dunlap, Lake Nolte and Lake Placid — break the natural flow of the river by creating reservoirs of fresh water held behind the river’s hydroelectric dams but were unable to control the massive amounts of water in recent floods. GBRA has worked with emergency management and weather services to help develop flood contingency plans for the community.

Jobs are just the beginning. Improving Infrastructure

It also works with community work groups and Texas Parks and Wildlife personnel to develop rules and regulations to promote safe and respectful use of the river resources. “Residents and outfitters along the river are kept abreast of river news through informational meetings with GBRA’s director of project development, chief engineer and other staff,” Smith said, adding that “GBRA manages and disseminates the Hyrdo-Watch and Weather-Net information, advising emergency medical coordinators throughout the basin, the local radio station and public callers during flood events.” Additionally, GBRA maintains flood preparedness information, including flood tracking charts for lakes Dunlap, McQueeney, Meadow and Placid on its website at www.gbra.org/flood/default.aspx.

County Living Q: Do I live in the county? A: If you live in Seguin you live in Guadalupe County, but if you live in the county you don’t necessarily live within the city limits of Seguin. It’s not really a philosophical question. Contact the Citizen Relations Coordinator at 401-2445 if you have a question. Q: When is garbage pickup? A: If you don’t live in the city of Seguin which has a garbage/recycling service, then you’re on your own. There are several firms who offer trash service in the Guadalupe County area. You’ll need to call one of those companies to start trash service. Q: What takes the place of other city services? A: In the county the primary law enforcement comes from the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Department instead of the Seguin Police Department. Fire protection is offered by a number of volunteer fire departments stationed around the area. The paid fire departments in Seguin and Schertz are sometimes called to assist in major fires and medical cases. Q: What about utilities? A: Utilities are offered by different groups depending on the service area. Electricity typically comes from the Guadalupe Valley Electric Cooperative which has the service area for much of the unincorporated area of the county. The city of Seguin provides electric, water, and wastewater, and garbage/recycle services to citizens within the city limits of Seguin. Water service is split across a number of different organizations. Q: What should I do if I see an animal running at large, an animal that has been run over or have questions? A: Call Guadalupe County Animal Control at 830303-8853. Animal Control is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to noon, on Saturday. It is located at the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office, 3021 N. Guadalupe St. in Seguin. For roadkills, broken or missing signs or potholes on county roads, call Guadalupe County Road and Bridge, 379-9721, between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The county judge presides over the group and sets the budget. Q: When and where are Commissioners Court meetings? A: Commissioners Court meetings are held at 10 a.m. Tuesdays at the Guadalupe County Justice Center located at 211 West Court Street. For agenda information, log on to: www.co.guadalupe.tx.us and click on the Agendas link on the right side of the Web page. In 2013, the city of Seguin launched curbside recycling efforts for the first time and in 2014 city officials were told that the community was participating at a much higher rate than anticipated. In the first three months the curbside recycling program collected more than 264 tons of recyclables — including 83.23 tons in October, 85.12 tons in November and 95.66 tons in December. The rules for recycling are found on the lids of the recycling cartons that city trash customers get. The city also holds clean up days where there are options for disposal of other items. Outside the city, Guadalupe County contracts with Bexar Waste to operate three citizen collection stations with free recycling of plastics and glass containers, tin and aluminum cans, newspapers and flattened cardboard. Fees apply to dispose of household trash, appliances, bulky items, construction debris, brush, roofing materials and tires. Distinction Designations under this rating system.

District Phone: 830-401-8600 District Website: www.seguinisd.net Interim Superintendent: Guadalupe C. Gorordo

Thanks to voters’ overwhelming approval of a bond election in November 2013, a new, state-of-the-art high school will be built at the current high school site by late 2017.

Covering 365 square miles of Guadalupe County, the Seguin Independent School District provides quality educational programs and experiences for more than 7,300 students.

Home of the Matadors

Seguin ISD is large enough to offer a wide variety of academic and extracurricular opportunities yet small enough to help each student develop their full potential in a caring, supportive learning environment. Here, teaching transcends simple acquisition of knowledge to instill critical thinking skills, problemsolving abilities and creative talents. As one of the major employers in the area, Matador Country consists of 13 campuses including one prekindergarten, seven K-5 elementary schools, two 6 through 8 grade middle schools, one 5A high school plus a non-traditional high school learning center and a discipline alternative campus. Seguin ISD and each of its campuses have received Met Standard ratings based upon the performance standards designated by the Texas Education Agency (TEA). Four campuses earned Academic Achievement

Seguin High School serves more than 1,900 9 to 12 grade students. The historic 5A campus, which includes a Freshman Center, offers more than 200 academic and Career & Technical (CTE) education classes, resulting in a wide variety of course choices to meet student preferences and needs. Students excel in an array of co-curricular and extra-curricular opportunities, from a Destination Imagination team that competed at the Global level to competitive athletics, plus award-winning academicbased, athletic, technical and fine arts programs. Key academic features of Seguin High School include a Health Science Academy designed to provide an enriched and focused curriculum for students who wish to pursue college and careers in the vast health and medical field. HSA is at the Mary B. Erskine School that offers designated classroom and lab space for the health sciences. In the fall of 2015, all ninth and tenth grade Seguin

Middle Schools A.J. Briesemeister and Jim Barnes Middle Schools serve the district’s sixth, seventh and eighth grade students. Technology is deeply rooted into the strong core course curriculum. Advanced math prepares students for high school credit, while hands-on lab work and computer-assisted simulations help students with their science assignments. Electives and extracurricular opportunities allow middle schoolers to find niches, develop talents and sharpen skills in athletics, vocal or instrumental music, art, theater arts and foreign language. Leadership is nurtured through student government, PALS peer tutoring and honor societies. Students earn academic recognition through the Duke University Talent Identification Program, UIL and Destination ImagiNation teams competing at the international level. Sixth grade students spend physical education class time at the Irma Lewis Seguin Outdoor Learning Center while enjoying outdoor recreation and developing lifelong interests and skills.

Elementary Education The seven Seguin ISD elementary schools provide a foundation for the well-rounded curriculum and instructional programs found district-wide. Children benefit from a balanced approach to reading instruction, from literary skills reinforced in computer labs and the Accelerated Reader program. Math concepts are visualized through use of manipulatives and labs boost science lessons. Elementary students develop skills in iMac computer labs and use mobile labs in class. Keyboarding, word processing, spreadsheet, database, robotics, telecommunications and multimedia presentation instruction help build strong tech foundations. Students have access to peripherals such as iPods, digital cameras and scanners. Campus-based extras include special interest clubs such as Destination ImagiNation teams that have won Globals, student council and performing choir. Fifth graders participate in an overnight camping trip to HEB Camp in Leakey where they perform science experiments, sharpen outdoor recreation skills and team build.

First Steps Seguin ISD’s youngest students embark upon their public school journey in the halls of Ball Early Childhood Center. Qualifying 3- and 4-year-olds benefit from the rich, nurturing atmosphere where teachers focus on language and early literacy development. The Ball staff offers students the opportunity to interact in an exciting language and tactile environment.

N

ow entering his 20th Season, Maestro David Mairs likes to say our motto should be, “The Mid-Texas Symphony … Wow! Are you are going to be surprised!” And you, like thousands of others before you, are definitely going to find the performance quality, the musical magic and the professionalism of our orchestra an amazing symphonic experience. Following February’s concert featuring Symphony No. 1 in E Minor by Sibelius a longtime patron, when asked if she enjoyed the concert, clutched her chest and as tears sprang to her eyes, she whispered, “There are no words; there are just no words.” And that’s the kind of surprise of which the Maestro speaks. Surprise has been a recurring theme for the Mid-Texas Symphony in the past few seasons. Just last season a new concert-goer was so surprised by the quality of the orchestra and the musicality of the musicians and the passion of the Maestro that the following day he made a sizable contribution to the orchestra. He compared the quality of the Mid-Texas Symphony to the big orchestras he had experienced in the East. The surprise is that this not an isolated story. As more and more folks move into South Central Texas region from other parts of the country, upon attending a Mid-Texas Symphony concert they are pleasantly surprised by

32

|| WELCOME TO SEGUIN

the quality of the musical experience. A number of our current Board of Director members have joined the board after attending a concert — yes, SURPRISE, we’re that good. You may also find the quality of our guest artists surprising. Each season we feature seasoned performers who have performed all over the world. This past season our audiences were blown away by Cliburn winner, Sean Chen, our own Jennifer Berg principal horn of the San Antonio Symphony, and Nancy Zhou a 22-year old violinist who has been performing since she was 10. The upcoming 2015-16 Season features Revel, a musical trio who has been hailed as a chamber group that rocks everything from Beethoven to Led Zeppelin, and Michael Gast, principal horn with the Minnesota Symphony who will amaze during the Mid-Texas Symphony’s Children’s Concert in October by playing a garden hose!

Many folks are surprised to learn that our symphony only has three rehearsals prior to our Sunday night concert. The musicians arrive at 10 a.m. on the Saturday prior to Sunday’s concert. The Maestro conducts two rehearsals on Saturday, one rehearsal on Sunday and then the concert happens. “I was so surprised to learn that the orchestra only rehearses THREE times before the concert, “ says Board member, Maury Meyers. “They are good. It’s amazing. They are so good!”

Texas Symphony has contributed to the cultural vibrancy of our area for over 38 years. Founded in 1978 by visionary, Anita Windecker, the Mid-Texas Symphony performs three concerts in Seguin and three concerts in New Braunfels each season. Annually more than 4,000 children from our local schools attend free MTS Children’s Concerts. Our roster consists of over 120 professional musicians many of whom perform with the San Antonio, Houston, and Austin, Victoria and Corpus Christi symphonies. The symphony draws audience members from all 50 States, Canada and many countries from around the world. The Mid-Texas Symphony is our area’s only professional orchestra and provides the unique opportunity to experience worldclass symphonic music in our home towns.

We perform two free Children’s Concerts in New Braunfels and two concerts in Seguin each year. The surprise — two thousand children can be moved in and out of the venues in less than 20 minutes! Each concert is presented twice in one day. We begin at 9 a.m. and the last child is ushered from the venue before noon. The Mid-Texas Symphony Children’s Concerts are attended by more than 4,000 children each year; which means since the inception of the Children’s Concerts more than 100,000 children have attended a symphonic concert presented by the MidTexas Symphony right in their own area. Many of the folks who attended as children now have children of their own attending the concerts!

It’s your turn to be surprised. Our tickets, ranging from $15 to $30, are well priced and both venues are beautiful and acoustically superior. In Seguin come see us at Jackson Auditorium on the Texas Lutheran University campus and in New Braunfels you will find us at the state-of-the-arts Performing Arts Center at Canyon High School. The 2015-16 Season is on sale now. Buy tickets online at www.mtsymphony.org or by calling the MTS office at 830-372-8089. For more information contact: C.J. Washington, 830-372-8089 or mts@tlu.edu.

It’s no surprise that as the only professional symphony orchestra in the South Central Texas region the Mid-

SEGUIN, TEXAS

Football Having met a grand total of 102 times on the gridiron, the annual battle between the Matadors and Unicorns is among the state’s oldest and most revered rivalry games. New Braunfels holds a sizable edge in the overall series, but Seguin broke through for its first win in seven years in 2013 after outlasting the Unicorns in a wild 38-31 overtime thriller at Matador Stadium. Both schools welcomed new head coaches into the mix in 2014 and began a brand new chapter in the growing history of the Guadalupe River Bowl, which renews its series this season in Seguin. It’s a game so big that even the towns’ mayors get into the act, annually wagering homegrown Seguin pecans against New Braunfels’ signature smoked sausage. The county’s smallest rivalry — as far as enrollment is concerned — has also become the most decorated contest annually. Both Lifegate and Fredericksburg Heritage have captured state titles in recent history, and each has multiple district championships under its belt. The Eagles began as the dominant force in the series, but the Falcons’ constant improvement has seem them rise all the way to their first state championship on the gridiron, which came in 2012. Heritage, however, has earned the most recent bragging rights, winning regular season and playoff head-to-head matchups in 2014 en route to claiming another state championship. But Lifegate has plans on evening the score in 2015.

SEGUIN, TEXAS

Tons of fun

W

e’ve got parades and a Christmas lighting ceremony downtown that will take your breath away. We’ve got a march to remember Martin Luther King Jr. and a day to protect and preserve the earth. We’ve got museums, tours, parties and pageants. We’ve got floating ducks, soaring birds, paddling trails and downtown sales. We’ve got concerts galore, moonlight and roses, fair royalty and not so scary scarecrows. As we wrap up this journey, we’ll give you plenty to do.

January Martin Luther King Jr. Day falls on the third Monday in January and Seguin marks the civil rights icon’s life with a full slate of events the weekend before which have included, a talent show, a “Taste of Soul” lunch. It all culminates in the Monday march from Seguin’s Central Park to Texas Lutheran University for a special program at the university’s Jackson Auditorium. The march draws people of all races and ages together. The first month of the year also sees the county recognize local youth with the annual Youth Livestock and Homemaker’s Show. Children from all across the county come together to show off their animals, baking prowess, photography and other skills. The event usually falls in mid January and ends with a Saturday afternoon auction of the grand champions. See gcys.org for more information.

February The second month of the year sees the Seguin Education Foundation pull out all the stops for its annual diamond fundraiser. The event raises money that goes into the classrooms of Seguin ISD schools in special grants to help teachers launch programs and initiatives that the regular budget can’t fund. The highlight of the event is a set of diamonds that participants can win in a raffle. February also marks the month where the Seguin Commission on the Arts gets together to shine a spotlight on local artists and the arts community. The event, which includes the Color Me Nutty Fun Run (pictured) also includes a variety of events from photography to sculpture to theater. Check out seguinarts.com as the event approaches. The Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce also uses the month for its annual Showcase Seguin that lets local businesses strut their stuff. 38

March As the first quarter of the year wraps up we have a busy March, which starts on Texas Independence Day at Sebastopol House in Seguin with the annual Toast to Texas event. Locals and visitors gather for readings, songs and a toast to the Lone Star State. There are a couple of food-based events on the month for those who find their tummies rumbling for a little taste of seafood. The first is Irma Lewis Seguin Outdoor Learning Center hosts its big fundraiser of the year with a Cajun Jamboree for those who like their mudbugs. Keep up at seguinolc.org The second is when the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce readies its annual Hotshot’s Reunion Fish Fry, which brings back the taste of a Seguinarea institution long after the floodwaters of 1998 shut the door of the famous Hotshot’s Restaurant in McQueeney. With the help of the restaurant’s staple recipes and family members pitching in, the event in Starcke Park always draws an enormous crowd. Keep up at seguinchamber.com. The month also includes a showcase for Teatro de Artes in the Noche De Gala Mariachi Vocalist Competition. The event, hosted at Texas Lutheran University’s Jackson Auditorium offers the community a cultural as well as a social evening of mariachi music

and folklórico dancing and draws competitors from around the area. The event also acts as a fundraiser for the organization with tickets in the past selling for $7 at local businesses and the both the Seguin Area and Seguin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

June

April

The summer marks the start of the Central Park Concert Series. Come to the park during the early evening with lawn chairs in hand to relax and enjoy a selection of entertaining musical pieces and to sample hot dogs, hamburgers, cold drinks and sno-cones being sold by local Boy Scouts.

April brings Moonlight & Roses as residents gather downtown at the beautiful Walnut Springs Park for a night of music, food and awards.

The Seguin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s annual Fiestas Juan Seguin event features music, food and games around the Central Park square.

The month also marks one of the city’s newest celebrations as the community gathers for Earth Day, in conjunction with Trade Days. The American Cancer Society also holds its annual Relay For Life at the Fairgrounds in the covered arena.

June also sees a local culinary competition as local restaurants and cooks square off at the Silver Center’s Taste of Seguin. Celebrity judges will rate everything from salads to desserts while residents get a chance to sample some of the best stuff to come out of kitchens.

May

July

The Agricultural and Heritage Center, better known locally as the Big Red Barn, gets into the act with its annual Ag Festival. Intended as fun for families, the Ag Festival features food booths, educational booths and agriculturally related commercial booths. You can keep up with the Ag Center’s events at www.texagedu.org.

The month of July adds a patriotic flare to downtown with the Freedom Fiesta, a patriotic concert and the Biggest Small Town Fourth of July Parade, where crowds swallow downtown to watch the Red, White and Blue floats motor down Austin Street past Central Park. People start putting out chairs along the route the day before! The celebration ends with a fireworks display over Starcke Park that lights up the night sky — if the weather and fire danger allows. July also sees the men and women who keep power flowing showing off their skills at Nolte Island. Power crews from all over the state show up for the Texas Lineman’s Rodeo.

August August sees the city celebrate its own birthday with the help of the Seguin Conservation Society. The event includes a proclamation delivered by posse, cake and ice cream for the participants. The event happens at the Heritage Village. You can keep up with the society at www.seguinconservation.org

September As the Texas summer finally starts to give way to cooler weather — maybe — Fiesta Patrias Diez y Seis gives local another opportunity for a cultural experience with food, music and fun. Main Street holds the second of its Trade Days during the month with vendors and groups descending on the Central Park square. Seguin’s finest canines jockey for votes to become the city’s newest dog ambassador. The event is a fundraiser for the Guadalupe County Humane Society where every dollar counts as a vote and since its start in 2008 the event has raised more than $30,000 for the humane society. 40

October This is the most jam-packed month on the Seguin calendar and it’s utterly dominated by the biggest event of the year — and second place isn’t even close. There is the Guadalupe County Fair and PRCA Rodeo and then everything else. This mammoth event has everything — a barbecue cook off, a parade, competition in just about every type of contest you can imagine and a carnival that draws people to the fairgrounds and event center for miles around. If you can only attend one event, this is the one to put on your bucket list. Keep up at www. gcfair.org.

and the Big Red Barn. The fun-filled family event celebrates area pecan growers and the community’s rural heritage. The event has picked up a lot of steam in recent years, drawing in tourists from around the state who have sung its praises. And for those who want to see it all, have no fear, there’s a trolley to ferry people around without having to drive yourself. You can keep up with what’s on offer this next year by checking in online at www.seguingonuts.com. Things get a little spooky as we approach Halloween as the Seguin Police Department makes a safe place for all the little ghouls and goblins to celebrate the season and get tasty treats to boot.

The month also sees the arrival of an explosion of orange at the First United Methodist Church on Austin Street in Seguin as the Pumpkin Patch opens for business with great photo opportunities. You can know when they arrive by checking www.fumcseguin. com.

The spooktacular events don’t end there though as the unseen spirits and spectres that wander some of Seguin’s old homes like the Mosheim and businesses are spotlighted as part of the “There’s A Ghost Story Here” tour from the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce.

Seguin and Guadalupe County residents love their hunting and fishing — so much so that they have an event devoted to it. Buck Fever provides a program for adults and youth to exhibit their previous years of deer harvest, exotic displays, and includes educational/commercial booths. The event consists of two nights of family atmosphere, good food, fellowship, contests, education and fun. Follow along at www.buckfever.org.

Another tour conjours up the spirits of Seguin’s past with a tour of the city’s Riverside Cemetery. The tour has included re-enactments of some of Seguin’s most famous residents who have shuffled off this mortal coil.

October just keeps on grinding with Pecan Fest and Heritage Days — where the pecan finally gets a chance to take center stage. This three-day event starts on a Friday and runs the entire weekend across multiple locations — including downtown Seguin

November Seguin has a strong military presence and that shows on Veterans Day in the community. All of the area organizations come together for a special session at Veterans Park at the corner of Jefferson and Erkel. Local school children also participate as Seguin ISD campuses recognize the day and the local veterans who work for the district.

December Seguin is a city that does Christmas right with several different events with the biggest being Holiday Stroll which kicks off with the Lighted Christmas Parade down Austin Street past Central Park and the lighting of the downtown square which ends with the mayor flipping a switch to light thousands of strands of lights that cover the downtown area and lighting up the night. There’s also a cocoa contest with Sip ’n Stroll where local businesses host people as they stroll around with commemorative cocoa mugs sampling different types. The Seguin Conservation Society gets into the holiday act as well with its annual Heritage Tour of Homes where residents get a chance to take a look at some of the area’s historic or interesting homes — all decked out in their holiday finery. Texas Lutheran University also marks the season with one of the hottest tickets in town for its Christmas Vespers. While the event is free, tickets are required. The Big Red Barn celebrates its Christmas with its own unique touch, setting up for a Country Christmas. The 44

event gives people a chance to wander the historic little village on site and see what Christmas Past was like, without having to deal with a pesky ghost. Downtown also plays host to Las Posadas during the holiday season as a procession wanders from place to place with Mary and Joseph as they are turned away with no room at the inn as the Christmas tale unfolds.
