We’re not only home to Juan Seguin, the world’s largest pecan and one of the oldest high school football rivalries in the state; we also boast a rich heritage and history that shapes our community character, a character founded in true Texas grit. Surrounded by all manner of shops, trendy restaurants, a boutique hotel, a beautiful library in a park-like setting and soon a craft brew taproom, downtown Seguin and Central Park are truly our city center, where celebrations are a big part of community life. We boast a diverse and robust economy that entices businesses, such as Niagara and Siro Group USA, to locate here. And with our new high school, top-rated university, and state-of-the-art hospital, more rooftops are sprouting up everywhere as more people are calling Seguin home.
Yet while Seguin is growing and thriving, we still give off that classic small town vibe where the Guadalupe River provides the backdrop to quiet neighborhoods where folks still know each other. What’s in a name that almost was Seguin was built on land granted by the Mexican Government to Sir Humphrey Branch, under the Emprassario Grant of Green DeWitt. This land grant, recorded in the State Land Office at Austin, bears the date of May 1830. Branch perfected his grant by settling on the present townsite in November 1831. About 1834, the area settlers moved to Gonzales for protection from the almost-constant attacks by Native Americans.

PREVAILING WINDS Southeast
Prior to 1838, Seguin was known as Walnut Springs. When it was found that another locality in Texas had previously recorded the name of Walnut Springs, Texas, the shareholders voted to adopt a new name. The choice was between Tuscumbia and Seguin, and Seguin won by 11 votes. The name of Seguin honors Juan N. Seguin, who was a colonel in the Texas Cavalry at San Jacinto. On March 24, 1846, an act by the First Legislature read as follow: “ … be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Texas that the town of Seguin be declared the Seat of Justice in the County of Guadalupe.” Then on March 30, 1846, Guadalupe County was created from parts of Bexar and Gonzales counties. By this Act, Guadalupe County became one of the first 10 counties created by the Legislature of Texas and Seguin actually became a county seat before there was a county to actually be the seat of. The city of Seguin was incorporated in 1853, with John R. King as its first mayor. A copy of the “Incorporation of Seguin” was printed in the Seguin Mercury, one of Seguin’s first newspapers. The Galveston and Harrisburg Railroad was built through Seguin in 1875. The first public school building was erected in 1889, but the first school was taught by Reverend David Thompson in 1842.
Did You Know? • In the early days, there were many beautiful rock fences that marked the property lines of the early settlers. Remnants of these can be seen at the east end of Nolte Street and at the corner of East Ireland and North Travis Streets. • “Texas,” the horse ridden by Theodore Roosevelt in the charge of San Juan Hill in the SpanishAmerican War, was given to Roosevelt by his cousin, Colonel Moore of Seguin. • Seguin is famous for its oak trees. The many beautiful oaks of Seguin have names of historical background. Many are estimated to be 500 years old or more — some even as much as 1,000 years old. • One of the most famous race horses of Seguin, in the days after the Civil War, was named Seguin, and it carried our colors to win in the State Races in Austin in those days.

World’s Largest Pecan Billed as the “World’s Largest Pecan,” the gargantuan nut is a tourist stop that pays homage to Guadalupe County’s key crop. But the one in front of the courthouse isn’t really the “World’s Largest” — despite the sign.

That honor was snatched away by Brunswick, Missouri, for a few years before a larger nut was crafted in Seguin to retake the title in 2011. That pecan, which travels to parades and special events throughout the area, makes its home at the Texas Agricultural Education and Heritage Center right outside town at what is known as The Big Red Barn. The area celebrates the honored nut with Pecan Fest every fall, and H-E-B offers a seasonal ice cream in their Creamy Creations line at the start of each year called Texas Vanilla Seguin Pecan.

Living life on the
river
S
eguin would be a very different place without the Guadalupe River. Whether wrapping around the golf course and playgrounds at Starcke Park or widening into one of the many lakes dotting the river like beads on a chain, the river measures the pace of life along its banks. A large variety of birds, reptiles, fish and insects call the river home, adding to the enjoyment of living and playing along the river, but also adding rules and regulations for use that protect the wildlife. Efforts to keep the water in its natural state benefit the wildlife and keep the river and lakes as a welcome retreat for anglers, boaters and water skiers. While local anglers are lured to the river by largemouth bass, Guadalupe bass and channel catfish, many other visitors enjoy opportunities for boating and swimming. The Guadalupe River winds 431 miles from its source near the town of Hunt in the Hill Country, meandering placidly through Seguin and South Central Texas to where it deposits into the Gulf of Mexico at San Antonio Bay. The Guadalupe’s natural beauty has made the river a draw to residents and weekend visitors alike. 6 || WELCOME TO SEGUIN
Headquartered in Seguin, the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority oversees the water resources of its 10-county statutory district, which includes Guadalupe County. GBRA employees manage water treatment plants for safe drinking water, operate wastewater treatment plants, perform water quality testing, run hydroelectric dams and plants, assist in watershed protection programs, deliver stored water from Canyon Reservoir, and operate several recreational parks. A series of hydroelectric darns along the river impound several small lakes — Lake Dunlap, Lake McQueeney, Lake Placid, Lake Nolte and Lake Gonzales and Lake Wood — where fishing, boating, tubing and other water recreation occur. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department personnel and local Sheriff’s departments provide enforcement on these lakes for rules enacted by the GBRA Board of Directors. The river’s water sustains the area’s most essential needs, but also has been the root of desperate moments in the region, including several floods that serve to remind us about the awesome power of water. “The floods of 1998 and 2002 were evidence of that power,” GBRA’s Executive Manager for Strategic
Communications and Public Affairs LaMarriol Smith said. “More recently, the Memorial Day flood of 2015 followed by the October 2015 flood raised the Blanco River, a tributary to the Guadalupe River, to record levels. People who live along these rivers have become much more aware of the dangers of flooding.” The river’s watershed covers an area of 6,616 square miles while collecting runoff from rainfall, streams, tributaries and springs flowing from the Edwards Aquifer. Heavy rainfall can have a devastating effect as the water accumulates and rushes downstream. GBRA’s staff works with county emergency management coordinators in its district, sheriff departments, the National Weather Service River Forecast Center, and other officials to help communities, outfitters and residents who live along the river stay safe during emergency flood conditions. GBRA engineers also conduct studies and work with the Federal Emergency Management Agency to help develop flood maps and contingency plans. Additionally, GBRA maintains flood preparedness information, including flood tracking charts for lakes Dunlap, McQueeney, Nolte and Placid on its website at www.gbra.org/flood/default.aspx.

Parks & Rec MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the City of Seguin Parks & Recreation Department is to foster community participation and improve the quality of life for residents of all ages, by providing safe recreational facilities and programs, leisure time opportunities, aquatics, and park development that will enhance the health, happiness and morale of the residents. Tables are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis and payment is due when reservations are made. Alcohol consumption is allowed in designated areas by permit only ($15 fee). Amusements, such as bounce house, petting zoo, climbing wall, trackless trains, etc., are allowed by permit only ($15) and shall only be through an approved company with general liability insurance of at least $1,000,000 naming the City of Seguin as an additional insured. Central Park and Walnut Springs Park reservations are made through the Main Street Program located at the City Hall Annex. Call 830-401-2475 for information. MAX STARCKE PARK A 227-acre park located along the scenic Guadalupe River. The park property was a pecan orchard prior to the park’s dedication in 1938. The park offers a variety of recreational activities that include a regulation 18-hole golf course, Wave Pool, natural fishing area, paddling trail, walking trail (0.8 miles), tennis, basketball and volleyball courts. For children, there is a Kids Kingdom Playscape, Little League Baseballsoftball complex. Pavilion and picnic areas are available throughout the park. SAFFOLD DAM Named for William Saffold, who owned land here in the mid 1800s, Saffold Dam is typical of many 10 || WELCOME TO SEGUIN
mill dams built during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Originally a natural rock outcropping, the dam was first improved by Henry Troell in the late 1800s when he added rock to the dam to raise the water level to power a cotton gin. The City of Seguin bought Troell’s property in 1907 to further develop the river’s hydroelectricity, and subsequent improvements have led to the establishment of a hydroelectric plant on the dam’s south side. TEXAS PADDLING TRAIL Access from Max Starcke Park West near Bowl Pavilion • Seguin Paddling Trail (Lake Seguin): This is a 4-mile paddling trail designed for beginning or novice paddlers, with no shuttle or portage necessary. Float time is 1-3 hours (depending on time spent on river, water level, flow rate and wind speed). • Seguin Paddling Trail (Lake Nolte/Meadow Lake): Access at Max Starcke Park East. With two different access points, this paddling trail on the Guadalupe River offers paddlers a variety of opportunities to create their own trip from 2.6 miles up to 8.4 miles in length. This trail is perfect for beginners since no shuttle is needed. WAVE POOL 1 Wave Pool Drive The Seguin Aquatic Center is located in Max Starcke Park East. The center features a 15,000-square-foot wave pool with a zero-depth beach type entry, a splash pool, raindrop mushroom. It is also available to rent for private parties. The center is open from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. For information, call 830-379- POOL (7665). BARKY PARK 1400 River Drive W. Separate fenced areas for small and large dogs. Waste bags, water for dogs and benches. Lots of shade from the giant pecan trees and lots of space to run, fetch and play.
PECAN BOTTOM FITNESS TRAIL 1412 River Drive E. Walk or jog this 0.8 mile trail through a shaded pecan grove with a multi-use fitness station. Dogs on leash allowed. MAX STARCKE PARK GOLF COURSE 650 River Drive W. The Golf Course is owned and operated by the City of Seguin. It is a regulation 18-hole par 71 course located on the north bank of the Guadalupe River and is dispersed with mature pecan trees. In the summer of 2013, the greens were sprigged with Mini Verde Bermuda grass. Senior tees also were added. Facilities include a golf shop, with snacks, soft drinks and beer, a driving range, with grass and mat hitting areas and two practice greens for chipping and putting practice. Golf cars are available for golfers to rent. Tee times are required every day of the week and can be made up to seven days in advance. Call the Golf Shop at 830-401-2490 for tee time availability. PARK WEST 601 N. Vaughan Ave. The Park West project is part of the overall $5 million voter-approved 2013 bond. The latest addition to the City of Seguin Community Park System, Park West offers everything from a skate park to a splash pad. The 47-acre community park includes athletic fields, a skatepark, playscape, basketball court, splashpad, group pavilion, picnic shelters, nature trails. MTR SKATEPARK 919 San Antonio Ave. City Council named the skatepark in memory of Michael Thomas Raetzsch, an avid local skater who passed away in 2009 at the age of 22. The skatepark is funded through the 2013 bond election that provided $4.2 million for a new community park and skate park on the city’s west side. It’s about 12,000 square feet and features a plaza-style design with stairs, rails and ramps. The concept was inspired by the plaza area in front of the Seguin Coliseum. (Jammin After-School Adventures for Me) is an after-school program sponsored by the City of Seguin, Parks and Recreation Department and the Seguin Independent School District. JAAM is offered at all SISD elementary schools, grades kindergarten through fifth grade. JAAM activities include: daily snack, homework time, group activities, arts and crafts, movies, parties and fun. JUAN SEGUIN BURIAL SITE 789 S. Saunders St. Juan Nepomuceno Seguin (Oct. 27, 1806 to Aug. 28, 1890) is the Texas patriot and statesman for whom the city of Seguin was named. The son of Erasmo and Maria Seguin, Spanish descendants from the Canary Islands who helped settle Texas, young Juan assembled Mexican-Texan troops and fought in the 1835 “Siege of Bexar.” He provided horses and aid for troops of Col. William B. Travis, further aiding as a courier during siege of the Alamo. He defended fleeing settlers in the “Runaway Scrape” after the fall of the Alamo. He directed the burial of the remains of all combatants of the Alamo, May 1836. Juan commanded the Company “A” (Cavalry) 2nd Regiment during the San Jacinto victory and commanded pursuit of Mexican army remnants flowing the San Jacinto battle. Walnut Springs residents voted to rename this community “Seguin” in his honor on Feb. 25, 1838. He served as mayor of San Antonio, 1841-48 and was a three-term senator for the Republic of Texas, 1837-40. He supported the bi-lingual publishing of textbooks and helped select a site for the state capitol. Juan died in 1890 in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. His remains were returned to Seguin in September 1974. He was reinterred with special honors on July 4, 1976 by the City of Seguin and Seguin Bicentennial Commission. SEBASTOPOL HOUSE 704 Zorn Seguin was once known as “The Concrete City” for constructing many buildings out of one of the first forms of concrete using limestone. This 1856 Greek Revival mansion is one of the country’s best preserved examples of 19th-century experimentation with concrete construction. Green in Seguin Since 2013, the curbside recycling program has been provided by Progressive Waste. The program has proven to have real results since commencing at a 37 percent participation rate after the first month. In FY 2015, Seguin’s 59 percent participation rate recycled 1,250.9 tons of material. Seguin residents are provided a blue 65-gallon container for their recyclable items and receive scheduled services weekly. Clean items should be placed in the blue bin, examples of items accepted are paper, plastic bottles #1-#7, glass bottles, flattened cardboard boxes and paper bags. No plastic bags or wet/soiled items. Yearly, residents can pick up a “Guide to a Greener Seguin” booklet during the city’s Earth Day event. The guide is a resource on how to reduce, reuse and recycle items in your home as well as a list of organizations and businesses that may accept other items.

Mental Health Services – The Teddy Buerger Center provides a broad range of family counseling services and is the only licensed treatment center in Guadalupe County. GRMC Mental Health Services has a partnership with Bluebonnet Trails to provide an Extended Observation Unit (EOU) on GRMC’s campus. Cardiology – The state-of-the-art Cardiac Cath Lab provides diagnostic, interventional and peripheral catheterizations by several cardiology groups. In addition, GRMC provides an array of cardiopulmonary diagnostic studies and cardiac rehab.

Emergency Services – Around the clock care is available to treat minor and major illnesses and injuries, with 25 private rooms and board-certified emergency physicians. GRMC’s emergency medicine physicians are supported by the broad range of other medical specialists who are available to provide prompt and continuum care for most levels of emergencies.
• Lab (830-401-7654) – Staffed with experienced and licensed professionals who provide a full spectrum of laboratory services. The lab also serves businesses with employment-related examinations including drug screening and breath alcohol testing.

• Rehabilitation (830-401-7665) – Therapists provide physical, occupational and speech therapy, including aquatic therapy in a heated pool or hot tub. To accommodate client needs, extended therapy hours are available.
• Wound Care (830-401-7777) – Provides evaluation, treatment and management of problem wounds resistant to healing. Wound Care physicians and staff have extensive backgrounds in wound care management, including the use of two hyperbaric chambers. Surgery – A variety of surgeries are performed daily on the main campus and in the nearby Outpatient Center, including general surgery, orthopedics, ENT, urology, gynecology, ophthalmology, spine, pain clinic, pediatric dentistry, and podiatry; all supported by an outstanding team of anesthesiologists. GRMC’s surgery technology, the da Vinci robot, is available for general and gynecological procedures. Wellness Center (830-401-7676) – A world-class gym, the Wellness Center is open to the public and provides individual and group fitness training. Aquatics, racquetball, cardio and strength training are all available. Group fitness includes yoga, Zumba, spin, strength training, water aerobics, cardio dance and seated classes. Off-site exercise options are available through monthly fun runs and the performance training center. Adult Medical Care – Specialty care includes pulmonology, critical care, nephrology and oncology.
Guadalupe Clinic for Chronic Disease Care (830303-9400) – The Guadalupe Clinic provides health care access to adult patients who are unfunded or unable to afford primary care that have one or more chronic illnesses. Specific illnesses that are managed at the clinic include: asthma, congestive heart failure, COPD, diabetes, hypertension and seizures. The clinic works closely with the prescription assistance program and GRMC diabetes educator to link patients to pertinent treatment resources in the community. While the clinic focuses on Guadalupe County patients it also accepts adult Medicaid and other insurances. Prescription Assistance Program (830-401-7603) – The Prescription Assistance Program (PAP) at GRMC helps patients receive needed prescription medications to treat chronic medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and depression. Qualification guidelines for PAP are: U.S. Citizen, have a low/fixed income, are on long-term medications, a physician in Guadalupe County and can pay $15/month. Community Education – Skilled staff teach community education on: Breastfeeding, Childbirth, Diabetes, Ostomy Care, Mental Health, Stroke Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, CPR, and First Aid. In November 2013, voters approved, by a 2 to 1 margin, a $83.3 million bond package to include $78.3 million to construct a new high school and $5 million for technology upgrades across the district. The new high school facility is currently under construction and scheduled to open in August 2017.
Additionally, the Health Science Academy helps meet the academic goals of Seguin High School students interested in pursuing post-graduate education and employment in health careers. Located at the Mary B. Erskine School, the program takes advantage of a facility that meets the infrastructure demands for health science course and lab instruction in a collegelike atmosphere. Middle Schools
A.J. Briesemeister and Jim Barnes middle schools serve the district’s sixth, seventh and eighth grade students. Technology is deeply rooted into the strong core course curriculum. Advanced math prepares students for high school credit, while hands-on lab work and computer-assisted simulations help students with their science assignments. Electives and extracurricular opportunities allow middle schoolers to find niches, develop talents and sharpen skills in athletics, vocal or instrumental music, art, theater arts and foreign language. Leadership is nurtured through student government, PALS peer tutoring and honor societies. Students earn academic recognition through the Duke University Talent Identification Program, UIL and Destination Imagination.
Elementary Education The seven Seguin ISD elementary schools provide a foundation for the well-rounded curriculum and instructional programs found district-wide. Children benefit from a balanced approach to reading instruction, from literary skills reinforced in computer labs and the Accelerated Reader program. Math concepts are visualized through use of manipulatives and labs boost science lessons.
Elementary students develop skills in iMac computer labs and use mobile labs in class. Keyboarding, word processing, spreadsheet, database, robotics, telecommunications and multimedia presentation instruction help build strong tech foundations. Students have access to peripherals such as iPods, digital cameras and scanners. Campus-based extras include special interest clubs such as Destination Imagination teams that have won Globals, student council and performing choir. Fifth graders participate in an overnight camping trip to HEB Camp in Leakey where they perform science experiments, sharpen outdoor recreation skills and team build.
First Steps Seguin ISD’s youngest students embark upon their public school journey in the halls of Ball Early Childhood Center. Qualifying 3- and 4-year-olds benefit from the rich, nurturing atmosphere where teachers focus on language and early literacy development. Texas Lutheran University is dedicated to promoting a traditional, residential, liberal arts and sciences education through small class sizes with 28 majors, 37 minors, 13 pre-professional programs and 60 concentrations. usic is language – expressing, exposing, and communicating our emotions. It is gathered, shared, written, spoken, performed and shaped into an aural encounter that is both an idea and a physical experience. Mid-Texas Symphony’s 2016-17 season is a seven-concert aural excursion into the exploration of the music in our lives. When asked what music “is “Mid-Texas Symphony’s Maestro, David Mairs, said: “Music is food for the human soul. And even though they don’t know it, everyone loves symphonic music. They really do. Honestly, I believe this to be true. They just haven’t met the piece of music that does it for them. It’s out here. You know, the music that makes you go, ‘Ah, I do like this.’”

Originally composed by Mairs in the days following the tragic events of 9/11, the piece is making a second appearance on the MTS stage. About the Mid-Texas Symphony Founded in 1978 by visionary Anita Windecker with the support from the communities of Seguin and New Braunfels, the Mid-Texas Symphony has provided the Central Texas region with professional symphonic music for more than 39 years.
Concert No. 6 is a fusion of brass, percussion, Americana music and the symphonic sounds of MidTexas Symphony’s professional orchestra. Singer/ songwriter and New Braunfels native Stewart Mann, of the Americana group Statesboro Revue, performs his songs with the orchestra. Football You can’t talk about Seguin football without bringing up its rivalry matchup with neighboring New Braunfels. Having met a grand total of 103 times on the gridiron, the annual battle between the Class SA Matadors and Class 6A Unicorns is among the state’s oldest and most revered rivalry games. “Beat New Braunfels” has become something of a rallying cry around town.
was the second district title that Marion has claimed in Salmon’s four years at the helm. The last one prior to his tenure? 1977. The Lifegate Falcons hold the distinction as being the lone prep program in the Seguin area to have captured a state championship. Head coach John Rabon and the Falcons reached the pinnacle of TAPPS Six-Man Division II back in 2012 by recording a perfect 14-0 season. Lifegate has twice lost to the eventual state champs in the past two seasons and appears poised to again challenge for the top prize in 2016. If you’ve never had an opportunity to see a six-man football game in person, be sure to make it a point to drive out to Lifegate and witness the high-scoring action.
New Braunfels holds a sizable edge in the overall series, but Seguin broke through for its first win in seven years in 2013 after outlasting the Unicorns in a wild 38-31 overtime thriller at Matador Stadium. Seguin welcomes a new head coach into the fold this year in Travis Bush, who will begin his own chapter in the growing history of the Guadalupe River Bowl. It’s a game so big that even the towns’ mayors get into the act, annually wagering homegrown Seguin pecans against New Braunfels’ signature smoked sausage. The town’s most successful UIL program in recent years is the Class 4A Navarro Panthers. Guided by Slot-T guru Les Goad, the Panthers have become known as a smashmouth, in-your-face football program. Navarro has claimed two straight district crowns and will look to add a third this year following the first undefeated regular season in school history. A deep playoff run is basically the only box left to check off for the boys from Geronimo. Meanwhile, the Marion Bulldogs’ legacy of athletic success has surged under the leadership of athletic director and head coach Bruce Salmon – a Seguin High School alum. The Class 3A Bulldogs shared a district championship a season ago and are back looking to do more damage this year with a fully loaded roster. It

with a full slate of events the weekend before which have included, a talent show, a “Taste of Soul” lunch. It all culminates in the Monday march from Seguin’s Central Park to Texas Lutheran University for a special program at the university’s Jackson Auditorium. The march draws people of all races and ages together. The first month of the year also sees the county recognize local youth with the annual Youth Livestock and Homemaker’s Show. Children from all across the county come together to show off their animals, baking prowess, photography and other skills. February The second month of the year sees the Seguin Education Foundation pull out all the stops for its annual diamond fundraiser. The event raises money that goes into the classrooms of Seguin ISD schools in special grants to help teachers launch programs and initiatives that the regular budget can’t fund. The highlight of the event is a set of diamonds that participants can win in a raffle. February also marks the month where the Seguin

March As the first quarter of the year wraps up, we have a busy march, which starts on Texas Independence Day at Sebastopol House in Seguin with the annual Toast to Texas event. Locals and visitors gather for readings, songs and a toast to the Lone Star State. There are a couple of food-based events on the month for those who find their tummies rumbling for a little taste of seafood. The first is Irma Lewis Seguin Outdoor Learning Center hosts its big fundraiser of the year with a Cajun Jamboree for those who like their mudbugs. Keep up at scguinolc.org.
April: Earth Day
The second is when the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce readies its annual Hotshot’s Reunion Fish Fry, which brings back the taste of a Seguinarea institution long after the floodwaters of 1998 shut the door of the famous Hotshot’s Restaurant in McQueeney. With the help of the restaurant’s staple recipes and family members pitching in, the event in Starcke Park always draws an enormous crowd. Keep up at seguinchamber.com. The month also includes a showcase for Teatro de Artes in the Noche De Gala Mariachi Vocalist Competition. The event, hosted at Texas Lutheran University’s Jackson Auditorium offers the community a cultural as well as a social evening of mariachi music and folklorico dancing and draws competitors from around the area. The event also acts as a fundraiser for the organization with tickets in the past selling for $7 at local businesses and the both the Seguin Area and Seguin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
April April brings Moonlight & Roses as residents gather downtown at the beautiful Walnut Springs Park for a night of music, food and awards. Main Street holds the first of its Trade Days during the month with vendors and groups descending on the Central Park square. The month also marks one of the city’s newest celebrations as the community gathers for Earth Day, in conjunction with Trade Days. May The month of May sees a pair of cultural events in Seguin with the annual Cinco de Mayo celebration as well as an annual recital for Teatro de Artes.
June: Central Park Concert Series
The Agricultural and Heritage Center, better known locally as the Big Red Barn gets into the act with its annual Ag Festival. Intended as fun for families, the Ag Festival features food booths, educational booths and agriculturally related commercial booths. You can keep up with the Ag Center’s events at www.tcxagcdu.org.
June The summer marks the start of the Central Park Concert Series. Come to the park during the early evening with lawn chairs in hand to relax and enjoy a selection of entertaining musical pieces and to sample hot dogs, hamburgers, cold drinks and snow cones being sold by local Boy Scouts. The fastest Chihuahuas on four feet take to the racetrack for the Seguin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s annual Fiestas Juan Seguin event, but the racing dogs aren’t the only thing on offer. There’s also music and food and games around the Central Park square. June also sees a local culinary competition as local restaurants and cooks square off at the Silver Center’s Taste of Seguin. Celebrity judges will rate everything from salads to desserts while residents get a chance to

sample some of the best stuff to come out of kitchens. Not to be left out, Blue Lotus Winery is holding its Blue Lotus Winery Chili Cook off/CASI Cook off at the winery. Visitors can enjoy free throw down chili from the chili competitors and wine.

And for fathers and daughters, the Seguin D.A.R.E. program is hosting a Cinderella Ball. The Cinderella Ball celebrates the night with Kings and Princesses as they dance the night away with the most important man in their life.
July The month of July has a patriotic flare to it downtown with the Freedom Fiesta event, a patriotic concert and the Mayor’s Luncheon, where people have an opportunity to break bread with the mayor at the coliseum. But the highlight of the month comes with the Biggest Small Town Fourth of July Parade, where crowds swallow downtown to watch the Red, White and Blue floats motor down Austin Street past Central Park. People start putting out chairs along the route the day before! The celebration ends with a fireworks display over Starcke Park that lights up the night sky – if the weather and fire danger allows. July also sees the men and women who keep power flowing showing off their skills at Nolte Island. Power crews from all over the state show up for the Texas Lineman’s Rodeo.
October: Pumpkin Patch
August The city celebrates its own birthday in August with the help of the Seguin Conservation Society. The event includes a proclamation delivered by posse, cake and ice cream for the participants. September As the Texas summer finally starts to sing its swan song – maybe – Fiesta Patrias Diez y Seis gives locals another opportunity for a cultural experience with food, music and fun. Seguin’s finest canines jockey for votes to become the city’s newest dog ambassador. The event is a fundraiser for the Guadalupe County Humane Society.
October This is the most jam-packed month on the Seguin calendar and it’s utterly dominated by the biggest event of the year – and second place isn’t even close. There is the Guadalupe County Fair and PRCA Rodeo and then everything else. This mammoth event has everything – a barbecue cook off, a parade, competition in just about every type of contest you can imagine and a carnival that draws people to the fairgrounds and event center for miles around. Main Street holds the second of its Trade Days during the month with vendors and groups descending on the Central Park square. what’s on offer this next year by checking in online at www.seguingonuts.com. Things get a little spooky as we approach Halloween as the Seguin Police Department makes a safe place for all the little ghouls and goblins to celebrate the season and get tasty treats to boot.
November Seguin has a strong military presence and that shows on Veterans Day in the community. All of the area organizations come together for a special session at Veterans Park at the corner of Jefferson and Erkel. Local school children also participate as Seguin ISD campuses recognize the day and the local veterans who work for the district.
December October: Pecan Fest event devoted to it. Buck Fever provides a program for adults and youth to exhibit their previous rears of deer harvest, exotic displays, and includes educational/commercial booths. The event consists of two nights of family atmosphere, good food, fellowship, contests, education and fun. Follow along at www.buckfever.org. October just keeps on grinding with Pecan Fest and Heritage Days, where the pecan finally gets a chance to take center stage. This three-day event starts on a Friday and runs the entire weekend across multiple locations, including downtown Seguin and the Big Red Barn. The fun-filled family event celebrates area pecan growers and the community’s rural heritage. The event has picked up a lot of steam in recent years, drawing in tourists from around the state who have sung its praises. And for those who want to see it all, have no fear; there’s a trolley to ferry people around without having to drive yourself. You can keep up with
November: Veterans Day
Seguin is a city that does Christmas right with several events. There’s also a cocoa contest with Sip ‘n Stroll, where local businesses host people as they stroll around with commemorative cocoa mugs sampling different types.
December: Holiday Stroll
The Seguin Conservation Society gets into the holiday act as well with its annual Heritage Tour of Homes, where residents get a chance to take a look at some of the area’s historic or interesting” homes – all decked out in their holiday finery. Texas Lutheran University also marks the season with one of the honest tickets in town for its Christmas Vespers. While the event is free, tickets are required. The Big Red Barn celebrates its Christmas with its own unique touch, setting up for a Country Christmas. The event gives people a chance to wander the historic little village on site and see what Christmas Past was like, without having to deal with a pesky ghost. Downtown also plays host to Las Posadas during the holiday season as a procession wanders from place to place with Mary and Joseph as they are turned away with no room at the inn as the Christmas tale unfolds.
