SEGUIN, TEXAS
G
Welcome
reetings! Welcome to Seguin! We hope you enjoy our beautiful town and your time with us. It truly is a special place. Seguin is one of the oldest towns in Texas, founded just 16 months after the Texas Revolution. The roads and buildings might look a little different than they did back then, but the hometown hospitality hasn’t changed a bit. Whether you are here to float the Guadalupe River, shop, dine or see the World’s Largest Pecan, Seguin offers a little bit of everything. The growth over the last few years has brought many wonderful additions to our community. There is a rich history here, and everyone has a story to tell. This magazine is a guide for both someone visiting and someone who was born and raised here. We hope that you fall in love with Seguin, just as we did many years ago.
Elizabeth Engelhardt General Manager Seguin Gazette
The city of Seguin’s famous “Biggest SmallTown 4th of July Parade” is held every year and attracts thousands of viewers as it winds its way through the city’s historic and downtown areas.
seguin – Home of the world largest pecan Weight: 3,320 lbs. | length: 16 ft. | diameter: 8.5 ft. | pie count: unknown Billed as the “World’s Largest Pecan,” the gargantuan nut is a tourist stop that pays homage to Guadalupe County’s key crop. But the one in front of the courthouse isn’t really the “World’s Largest” — despite the sign. That honor was snatched away by PAGE 4
Brunswick, Missouri, for a few years before a larger nut was crafted in Seguin to retake the title in 2011. That pecan, which once traveled to parades and special events throughout the area, makes its home at the Texas Agricultural Education and Heritage Center right outside
town at what is known as The Big Red Barn. The area celebrates the honored nut with Pecan Fest every fall, and H-E-B offers a seasonal ice cream in their Creamy Creations line at the start of each year called Texas Vanilla Seguin Pecan.

Seguin was built on land granted by the Mexican Government to Sir Humphrey Branch, under the emprassario grant of Green DeWitt. This land grant, recorded in the State Land Office at Austin, bears the date of May 1830. Branch perfected his grant by settling on the present townsite in November 1831. About 1834, the area settlers moved to Gonzales for protection from the almost constant attacks by Native Americans. Prior to 1838, Seguin was known as Walnut Springs. When it was found that another locality in Texas had previously recorded the name of Walnut Springs, Texas, the shareholders voted to adopt a new name. The choice was between Tuscumbia and Seguin, and Seguin won by 11 votes. The name of Seguin honors Juan N. Seguin, who was a colonel in the Texas Cavalry at San Jacinto. On March 24, 1846, an act by the First Legislature read as follow: “ … be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Texas that the town of Seguin be declared the Seat of Justice in the County of Guadalupe.” Then on March 30, 1846, Guadalupe County was created from parts of Bexar and Gonzales counties. By this Act, Guadalupe County became one of the first 10 counties created by the Legislature of Texas and Seguin became a county seat before there was a county to actually be the seat of. The city of Seguin was incorporated in 1853, with John R. King as its first mayor. A copy of the “Incorporation of Seguin” was printed in the Seguin Mercury, one of Seguin’s first newspapers. The Galveston and Harrisburg Railroad was built through Seguin in 1875. The first public school building was erected in 1889, but the first school was taught by Reverend David Thompson in 1842.

SAFFOLD DAM
Named for William Saffold, who owned land here in the mid1800s, Saffold Dam is typical of many mill dams built during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Originally a natural rock outcropping, the dam was first improved by Henry Troell in the late 1800s when he added rock to the dam to raise the water level to power a cotton gin. The city of Seguin bought Troell’s property in 1907 to further develop the river’s hydroelectricity, and subsequent improvements have led to the establishment of a hydroelectric plant on the dam’s south side.

Four Candidates: Four Concerts: One Music Director
Mid-Texas Symphony brings candidates to the stage for auditions

ig changes are underway with Mid-Texas Symphony. Season Forty-One promises to be one of the most exciting and challenging seasons since its inception in 1978. The 40-year old organization is searching for its next artistic leader and candidates from across the country compete for the title. Beloved Maestro, David Mairs, retired his baton at the final concert of the MTS 40th Anniversary Season. Having spent
PAGE 14
more than half the life of the organization as its conductor and artistic leader, Mairs stepped away from the podium after 22 years. “There is no way I can adequately express my gratitude to our generous donors and supporters!” says Mairs of his distinguished career with MTS. “You have invested not only your financial resources, but also your hearts and your spirits in our orchestra. Your support and attendance
helped us build a musical and service organization in which all of us can take pride.” Mairs goes on to say that, it is time for a new artistic leader to take MTS on its journey into the Future. Beginning in October of 2017, a 10member committee of dedicated MidTexas Symphony musicians and board members formed a search committee who have dedicated almost the entire 20172018 season to a search for the new music
2018 | Welcome to Seguin
director by giving of their time, talent and resources. An advertised search netted almost 100 resumes from conductors all over the world. The search committee has narrowed its final selection to four candidates invited to audition. She or he takes the baton beginning Season No. 42 in 20192020. The final four candidates bring a wealth of experience, innovation and a unique perspective to the podium. Discover for yourself the history and educational background in symphonic music each brings to the concert experience. Each candidate conducts a concert of the 2018-2019 Season: four concerts, four candidates. It is an opportunity for the community to continue to participate in Mid-Texas Symphony’s musical journey. A survey completed by audience gives feedback on the candidate’s style, performance and fit. They conduct a symphony from the classical cannon and the remainder of the program builds upon their selections. They also conduct a children’s concert for fourth and fifth grade students. Their task will be to pull excerpts from the classical concert program for the kids and present the material in way that kids “get.” Their talents are many. At least one of them will win you over! ig changes are underway with Mid-Texas Symphony. Having spent more than half the life of the organization as its conductor and artistic leader, Mairs stepped away from the podium after 22 years. “There is no way I can adequately express my gratitude to our generous donors and supporters!” says Mairs of his distinguished career with MTS. “You have

Your support and attendance helped us build a musical and service organization in which all of us can take pride.” Mairs goes on to say that, it is time for a new artistic leader to take MTS on its journey into the Future. Beginning in October of 2017, a 10- member committee of dedicated Mid-Texas Symphony musicians and board members formed a Search Committee who have dedicated almost the entire 2017-2018 season to a search for the new music director by giving of their time, talent and resources. An advertised search netted almost 100 resumes from conductors all over the world. The Search Commit-

Each candidate conducts a concert of the 20182019 Season: four concerts, four candidates. It is an opportunity for the community to continue to participate in Mid-Texas Symphony’s musical journey. A survey completed by audience gives feedback on the candidate’s style, performance and fit. They conduct a symphony from the classical cannon and the remainder

education seguin isD District Phone: 830-401-8600 District Website: www.seguinisd.net Superintendent: Matthew Gutierrez Covering 365 square miles of Guadalupe County, Seguin ISD offers quality educational programs and experiences for more than 7,400 students. Seguin ISD is large enough to offer a wide variety of academic and extracurricular opportunities yet small enough to help each student develop full potential in a caring, supportive learning environment. Here, teaching transcends simple acquisition of knowledge to instill critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities and creative talents. As one of the area’s largest employers, Matador Country consists of 13 campuses including one prekindergarten, seven K-5 elementary schools, two middle schools, one 5A high school plus a non-traditional high school learning center and a discipline alternative campus. Seguin ISD and all of its campuses received the “Met Standard” designation by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) based upon the state’s most recent accountability rating. A total of 16 coveted Distinction Designations were earned by five schools.
ular and extra-curricular opportunities, from global award winning Destination Imagination teams to competitive athletics, plus award-winning academic-based technical, JROTC and fine arts programs.

Middle Schools
Seguin High School serves nearly 2,000 9-12 grade students. The historic 5A campus is home to the Seguin Early College High School thanks to a partnership with St. Philip’s College of the Alamo Colleges. This College for All program, initiated in 2014, allows each student to earn college credits up to an associate degree while simultaneously working toward a high school diploma—free of charge to students and families. Seguin High School offers more than 200 academic and Career & Technical Education (CTE) classes, resulting in a wide variety of course choices to meet student preferences and needs. Students and staff proudly opened the newly constructed Seguin High School in August 2017. Approved by voters in 2013 by a 2 to 1 margin, the $83.3 million bond package included $78.3 million to construct a new high school and $5 million for technology upgrades across the district. Naturally, the new high school is a tremendous boost to the secondary academic environment. Modern facilities have boosted Matador pride to new levels as students are afforded the most current technology, lab space and facility features to meet increasing state educational standards. Overall, Matadors excel in an array of co-curric-

A.J. Briesemeister and Jim Barnes middle schools serve the district’s sixth, seventh and eighth grade students. Technology is deeply rooted into the strong core course curriculum. Advanced math prepares students for high school credit, while hands-on lab work and computer-assisted simulations help students with their science assignments. Electives and extracurricular opportunities allow middle schoolers to find niches, develop talents and sharpen skills in athletics, vocal or instrumental music, art, theater arts and foreign language. Leadership is nurtured through student government, PALS peer tutoring and honor societies. Students earn academic recognition through the Duke University Talent Identification Program, UIL and Destination Imagination.
Elementary Education
The seven Seguin ISD elementary schools provide a foundation for the well-rounded curriculum and instructional programs found district-wide. Children benefit from a balanced approach to reading instruction, from literary skills reinforced in computer labs and the Accelerated Reader program. Math concepts are visualized through use of manipulatives and labs boost science lessons. Elementary students develop skills in iMac computer labs and use mobile labs in class. foundations. Students have access to peripherals such as iPods, digital cameras and scanners. Campus-based extras include special interest clubs such as Destination Imagination teams that have won Globals, student council and performing choir. Fifth graders participate in an overnight camping trip to H-E-B Camp in Leakey where they perform science experiments, sharpen outdoor recreation skills and team build.
First Steps
Seguin ISD’s youngest students embark upon their public school journey in the halls of Ball Early Childhood Center. Three and 4-year-olds benefit from the rich, nurturing atmosphere where teachers focus on language and early literacy development. The Ball staff offers students the opportunity to interact in an exciting language and tactile environment.

We continue to believe that evangelism begins in our own communities, and a mission-minded ministry lies at the forefront of Seguin Christian Academy’s approach to education. SCA believes if we don’t reach the children for Christ, there will be no one left in future generations to be His witness, “For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth” (Acts 13:47). Students are educated in a loving Christian environment by highly qualified teachers and are led by example to worship God, love their country and respect those who are in authority over them. Students receive an exemplary education in a warm, country setting with small class sizes at a 7:1 student/teacher ratio. The mission of Seguin Christian Academy is to care for God’s children, share the love of Jesus, and prepare today’s students for tomorrow’s world. We are a non-denominational Christian school; therefore, the focus is on the Bible - not doctrine. All instruction aligns with the belief that the Bible is the inspired, infallible, authoritative, inerrant Word of God. We make no distinction concerning an individual’s race or ethnic background because we acknowledge that there can be no preferential treatment with God (Romans 2:11). Come and bear witness to the peace that falls over our campus and our families. Seguin Christian Academy, 1456 E. Kingsbury St., Seguin, TX 78155.

lamo Colleges - CTTC is a regional campus of the Alamo Colleges providing both credit and non-credit courses for tomorrow’s workforce. CTTC’s student populace has expanded rapidly since 2010 to a campus that delivers coursework to more than 1,200 students per semester.
The rapid growth of the CTTC student populace necessitated the expansion of the existing campus facility. A new facility expansion was completed in September 2015, which added an additional 30,000 square feet to accommodate the student growth. The expanded facility includes new biology and chemistry labs, a virtual library, and more student-centered space to accommodate the increased student population. The expansion also accommodates additional courses offered in areas such as credit and continuing education to fit into many of the diverse schedules that many students encounter today. The CTTC provides opportunities for creative development, service for the public good and exemplary teaching – with most of the faculty members residing in the local area. The CTTC is dedicated to community workforce development and is a prime ingredient in the acceleration, creation and expansion of high-skill, highwage jobs in the regional area. Alamo Colleges - CTTC is also home to the Advanced Technology and Manufacturing Academy (ATMA) and Information Technology and Security Academy (ITSA) with

course programming available to high school juniors and seniors at the CTTC. The courses are coordinated associated degree programs through Alamo Colleges – St. Philip’s College (ATMA) and Alamo Colleges – San Antonio College (ITSA) and provides these high school students with workforce skills development and certifications within the programs. The Alamo Colleges - Central Texas Technology Center works closely with local and state government to provide course programming which promotes economic development for both business and industry. Customized training can be tailored to offer upward job mobility and development of basic workplace and advanced technical job skills. Corporate customized training is also accomplished at the CTTC, or maybe also accomplished within the company site. Partnerships with business and industry enhance the quality of instruction by providing potential employees with real world experience and exposure to state of the art equipment. Court St., Seguin, TX 78155 Website: www.tlu.edu Phone: 830-372-8000 Facebook/Twitter/YouTube: @txlutheran Texas Lutheran University is dedicated to promoting a traditional, residential, liberal arts and sciences education through small class sizes with 27 majors, 3 graduate programs, 37 minors, and 13 pre-professional programs. Students experience a challenging academic environment that sets a path for lifelong learning. Founded in 1891, TLU resides on 184 scenic acres just 35 miles from San Antonio and 50 miles from Austin. A diverse student body of approximately 1,300 with classes averaging fewer than 20 students provides a sense of community and an environment where individuality and personal growth are as integral to success as rigorous academics. This fall, the university added a new master’s program in data Analytics, as well as an integrated science major. TLU also prides itself on developing the whole student. The co-curriculum and extra-curriculum is developed and implemented by students, faculty, and staff to provide a variety
PAGE 26
of academic, social, and cultural activities and organizations. Special emphasis is also placed on civic engagement and service learning. From 2016 through 2017, students, faculty and staff logged more than 16,000 hours of community service. Approximately one-third of students participate in one of 18 intercollegiate athletic teams. Men’s teams include baseball, basketball, football, golf, soccer, indoor and outdoor track & field, cross country and tennis. Women participate in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, indoor and outdoor track & field, and volleyball. The Bulldogs are members of the NCAA Division III and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. A significant number of TLU students also showcase their talent and creativity through the fine arts. Nearly a quarter of the university’s full-time students participate in TLU’s music, dramatic media, and visual arts programs. 2017-2018 was also an exciting year for TLU’s music choir and theatre programs. The Caroline M. Weston Center for the Performing Arts had its grand opening this January and was the most ambitious construction project in university history. The new space includes a black box studio theatre, video production space, additional dressing room and green room, a 32,000-squarefoot School of Music Building featuring band, choir, orchestra, and ensemble rehearsal halls, studio and classroom space, student practice rooms, faculty offices and renovations to the Jackson Auditorium bathrooms and lobby. TLU also encourages students to study abroad, participate in seminars, internships, and facultystudent research, and become involved in various organizations and activities.

S
eguin would be a very different place without the Guadalupe River. Whether wrapping around the golf course and playgrounds at Starcke Park or widening into one of the many lakes dotting the river like beads on a chain, the river measures the pace of life along its banks. A large variety of birds, reptiles, fish and insects call the river home, adding to the enjoyment of living and playing along the river, but also adding rules and regulations for use that protect the wildlife. Efforts to keep the water in its natural state benefit the wildlife and keep the river and lakes as a welcome retreat for anglers, boaters and water skiers. While local anglers are lured to the river by largemouth bass, Guadalupe bass and channel catfish, many other visitors enjoy opportunities for boating and swimming. The Guadalupe River winds 431 miles from its source near the town of Hunt in the Hill Country, meandering placidly through Seguin and South Central Texas to where it deposits into the Gulf of Mexico at San Antonio Bay. The Guadalupe’s natural beauty has made the river a draw to residents and weekend visitors alike. Headquartered in Seguin, the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority oversees the water resources of its 10-county statutory district, which includes Guadalupe County. GBRA employees manage water treatment plants for safe drinking water, operate wastewater treatment plants, perform water quality testing, run hydroelectric dams and plants, assist
in watershed protection programs, deliver stored water from Canyon Reservoir, and operate several recreational parks. A series of hydroelectric darns along the river impound several small lakes — Lake Dunlap, Lake McQueeney, Lake Placid, Lake Nolte and Lake Gonzales and Lake Wood — where fishing, boating, tubing and other water recreation occur. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department personnel and local Sheriff ’s departments provide enforcement on these lakes for rules enacted by the GBRA Board of Directors. The river’s water sustains the area’s most essential needs, but also has been the root of desperate moments in the region,

including several floods that serve to remind us about the awesome power of water. “The floods of 1998 and 2002 were evidence of that power,” GBRA’s Executive Manager for Strategic Communications and Public Affairs LaMarriol Smith said. “More recently, the Memorial Day flood of 2015 followed by the October 2015 flood raised the Blanco River, a tributary to the Guadalupe River, to record levels. People who live along these rivers have become much more aware of the dangers of flooding.” The river’s watershed covers an area
K
of 6,616 square miles while collecting runoff from rainfall, streams, tributaries and springs flowing from the Edwards Aquifer. Heavy rainfall can have a devastating effect as the water accumulates and rushes downstream. GBRA’s staff works with county emergency management coordinators in its district, sheriff departments, the National Weather Service River Forecast Center, and other officials to help communities, outfitters and residents who live along the river stay safe during emergency flood conditions. GBRA engineers also conduct studies and work with the
Federal Emergency Management Agency to help develop flood maps and contingency plans. Additionally, GBRA maintains flood preparedness information, including flood tracking charts for lakes Dunlap, McQueeney, Nolte and Placid on its website at www.gbra.org/flood/ default.aspx. GBRA officials coordinate with local radio station KWED to broadcast area flood advisories. GBRA also posts information during flood events on its social media sites. Football T his football season, the Guadalupe Country will experience the usual excitement of the Friday Night Lights, only this year things might be slightly different. From new head football coaches to new districts, a new era has begun for football programs and the community. The Seguin Matadors will head into its third year under the direction of head coach Travis Bush. For the past two seasons, Bush has been changing the culture in the Class 5A football program. Although the overall record doesn’t show it, the Matadors have shown growth in every game. But that might change. From the UIL realignment, Seguin football will compete in District 12-5A-Division I in Region III. The Matadors will face the usual Dripping Springs, but also will compete against Austin ISD programs — Crockett, Johnson, Lanier, McCallum, Reagan and Travis. Despite the new faces the Matadors will play, the classic rivalry matchup with the neighboring New Braunfels Unicorns is still on the schedule. The huge preseason game is still on so the wages and bets will continue.
PAGE 36
2018 | Welcome to Seguin
The town’s most successful UIL program in recent years is the Class 4A Navarro Panthers, but many changes have occurred at Navarro High School. The Slot-T guru Les Goad has left Navarro and has joined Hays CISD to head up the football program at Buda Hays High School. Rod Blount, who has spent the past four seasons at Mathis, replaced Goad but plans to keep the same Slot-T atmosphere in Navarro. Along with a new football head coach and athletic director, the Panthers have stayed in District-13-4A-Division II, but, with the UIL realignments, its division has welcomed longtime playoff rival Cuero and Austin Eastside Memorial. With the new changes, the Navarro Panthers will have a few obstacles to overcome and that should be exciting to see. Meanwhile, the Marion Bulldogs entered a new district and have received a new football head coach as well. Marion’s former coach Bruce Salmon left to head up the Kyle Lehman Lobos. Marion hired new head coach and athletic director Ryne Miller to take over the Bulldog program.
– a product of the Seguin Gazette
In addition to a new coach, the Bulldogs find themselves in the in the new-look District 15-3A-Division I in Region IV for football. Marion will compete against holdovers San Antonio-Cole and Universal City-Randolph along with Cotulla, Jourdanton, Karnes City and Lyle. The football program claimed a district title last season, but with a new coach and new district, things will be different this coming season. The Lifegate Christian Falcons recently earned their second state title after defeating the Granbury North-Central Academy Pioneers 90-40 in the TAPPS Six-Man Division III state championship game. The state title capped their successful career as the team went 9-3 overall under the direction of head coach John Rabon. Although after the state championship game, Rabon retired from Falcon football and the program has yet to hire a new football head coach. Although things may seem uncertain, all football programs are on the right track to dominate this season.

Health Care
Healthgrades Recognizes Guadalupe Regional Medical Center for Achievements in Patient Safety and Patient Experience
Guadalupe Regional Medical Center (GRMC) announced that it has been recognized for two distinctions in quality excellence from Healthgrades: the Healthgrades 2018 Patient Safety Excellence Award™ for the second year in a row and the Healthgrades 2018 Outstanding Patient Experience Award™. Healthgrades is the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals. Only 65 out of just over 4,500 hospitals evaluated for patient safety and patient experience excellence achieved both distinctions. This places GRMC within the top 2 percent of eligible hospitals in the nation to receive both awards. This distinction recognizes Guadalupe Regional Medical Center for excellent performance in safeguarding patients from serious, potentially preventable complications, as well as providing a positive experience for patients during their hospital stays.
Patient Safety During the study period (2014 to 2016), Healthgrades 2018 Patient Safety Excellence Award recipient hospitals demonstrated excellent performance in safety provided to patients in the Medicare population, as measured by objective outcomes for 13 patient safety indicators defined by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). This distinction places GRMC among the top 10 percent of all short-term acute care hospitals in the nation to receive this recognition. “This national recognition from Healthgrades, for the second consecutive year, confirms our testament to the high standard of care provided to patients every day by the staff at GRMC and to our dedication in providing high-quality,

Guadalupe Regional Medical Center is among the top 10 percent of hospitals nationwide for patient experience and has received the 2018 Outstanding Patient Experience Award. “At GRMC, we approach each patient interaction with the goal of meeting and exceeding their expectations”, said Elizabeth Pastrano, Patient Experience Coordinator at Guadalupe Regional Medical Center. “Every positive encounter that a patient has during their stay is a direct result of our team’s commitment to providing quality healthcare to each patient we are have the privilege to care for”. Healthgrades evaluated performance by applying a scoring methodology to 10 patient experience measures, using data collected from a 32-question patient experience survey of the hospital’s own patients. The survey questions focus on patients’ perspectives of their care in the hospital. The topics of these questions ranged from cleanliness and noise levels in patient rooms to factors such as pain management and responsiveness to patients’ needs. The measures also include whether a patient would recommend the hospital to friends or family. “Patient experience surveys offer important insights about hospitals and their commitment to providing patients with outstanding experience, and furthermore, consumers value that information when making care decisions,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Healthgrades. “Hospitals that have received the Healthgrades 2018 Outstanding Patient Experience Award have received high marks from their most important stakeholders—the patients themselves.” Statistics are based on Healthgrades Patient Safety Ratings and Excellence Award methodology, which is primarily constructed using AHRQ Technical Specifications version 5E applied to MedPAR data for years 2014 through 2016 and represent three-year estimates for Medicare patients only.

All of the area organizations come together for a special session at Veterans Park at the corner of Jefferson and Erkel. Local school children also participate as Seguin ISD campuses recognize the day and the local veterans who work for the district. Toward the end of the month, bells begin ringing marking the official start of the Christmas season, as the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign kicks off. Community members spend their time ringing the bell, helping to collect funds for the Seguin Unit.
December
Seguin is a city that does Christmas right with several events. There’s also a cocoa contest with Sip ‘n Stroll, where local businesses host people as they stroll around with commemorative cocoa mugs sampling different types.

Texas Lutheran University also marks the season with one of the hottest tickets in town for its Christmas Vespers service – a celebration of music and word. While the event is free, tickets are required.
Downtown also plays host to Las Posadas during the holiday season as a procession wanders from place to place with Mary and Joseph as they are turned away with no room at the inn as the Christmas tale unfolds.
